The Solution to Life, the Universe, and Everything: Rosebud Salve

By Isabella Muse on November 21, 2007 24 Comments

in Beauty Babblings, Recommendations, Smith's

I guess my heading is a bit dramatic and if you’re not a Douglas Adams fan you have no idea what the reference is about however it is slightly true!

Behold my solution to Life, the Universe and Everything lays within a tiny tin of lip balm!

Ok, ok enough drama but I will say I can’t recommend this balm enough and if you don’t have at least five of these tins in your draw already you better hurry to the store and grab some immediately! Rosebud Salve is my cure all, multitasking beauty demon that works in any number of ways to save the day! This works on everything! When I say everything I really mean EVERYTHING! If you visit the website they’ll recommend it for any number of things that will amaze you but I personally use it for the following reasons:

Chapped Lips: I get severe chapped lips come winter and this is wonderfully soothing and healing on my cracked, dry lips!
Eyebrows: A small amount keeps my brows in proper shape all day long!
Zits: Yes I said zits! This works great on small pimples and dries them up almost instantly!
Elbows, Knees, and Feet: I use this on all my rough patchy skin areas like my knees, elbows, and on the heals of my feet! It makes my skin smooth and soft!
Cuts, Cuticles, Hangnails, and Burns: I’m not exactly Betty Crocker in the kitchen but when I do get small burns from removing something from the oven I can dab a little of this on to soothe it! It also works great on small cuts! Smooths out my cuticle area and for hangnails it works amazingly well to sooth the dry skin and makes me less likely to rip it off!

I can probably go on and on with this list! I’ve been using this stuff for ages and it’s amazing! I’ve seen imitation brands but nothing works as good as the original Rosebud Perfume Co. Smith’s Rosebud Salve!

I love the fact that over the course of the last few years they have done different flavors! I really can’t pick a favorite as I adore them all! Mint Rose is a delightful Victorian rose and mint flavor! It may sound weird but the taste is yum! The strawberry is yummie too! And the regular rose flavor is delightfully fragrant and tasty! The mentholated one I don’t use on my lips but I do use on my chest when I’m feeling a bit congested!

Mostly this post was inspired by the fact that a new flavor has been introduced that the Muse is dying to try!

Brambleberry Rose Lip Balm

This new flavor promises the taste of freshly baked berry pie! Mmm my lips are singing already!

Here are a few in my collection (I keep these everywhere! My desk draw, washroom, nightstand, etc…):

Minted Rose

Strawberry

Original Rosebud Salve (This is my body tin which accounts for the amount used hehe! Hands, Feet, Toes, Legs, Etc…)

These tins run $6-$7 each and are an incredible value as the tin is HUGE! The Muse highly recommends Rosebud Salve which makes these Muse approved!

I bought the Rose Salve in 2004 winter and I am only half way through with it. It was $5 at Sephora and the best lip balm I’ve ever used. As far as for cuticles, I like my Burt’s Bee Curticle Cream better. But for minor burns, cuts or hang nails, this is the one for me.

I am all over the LUSH sale. don’t worry. =) I will not let an offer like that slip through my fingers.

    Happy Turkey Day!~!!

    hey steph!

Happy Turkey to you and yours 🙂 Enjoy! Eat and be Merry hehe!

I believe I brought my first one around 03 or 04 as well!

It seems far longer! I love Burts 🙂 But this stuff is just great for multitasking!

It is indeed a nice deal! It’s a great way to introduce friends to lush!

Hmmm… Acne treatment? I’d tried SRS on my brows, cuticles and frizz before, but never on my pimples. That’s one to try out in the future. Though, I suppose I’d have to get a separate tin for that as cross contamination might be an issue…

I actually smelled Brambleberry Rose a while back at Sephora and am immediately reminded of a remark my Bartending instructor made about sloe gin: “everyone says it tastes like cherries, but I think it tastes like ass.” Replace ‘cherries’ wit ‘berries’ and ‘tastes’ with ‘smells’, and that pretty much sums up how I feel about Brambleberry. I do, however, L.O.V.E. Strawberry and am greatly intrigued by Minted Rose. I don’t recall ever seeing that one at Sephora. I’ll probably head back there next week and ‘investigate’… 😉

PS: Your use for Minted Rose is PURE GENIUS! I’ve always hated that nasty Vick’s Vaporub smell, and Minted Rose might just be the solution! 😀

    Hey Mandy!!!!!
Yup! I use it on small pimples! I actually have several tins that I label for indivdual items as I’m such a germ freak! So I have 4 tins of the regular rose that I use for face, body, hands, and lips! I’m a bit anal to say the least.

I normally use a fresh q tip when I apply on my face. I dip apply, toss the q tip and use another one for re-application because I don’t want the entire tin to spoil with god knows what 😉

My god are you saying the new smells and tastes like ass? LOL! That stinks 🙁 sigh! Oh well! I still am curious how it is!

I like Strawberry too! It as that retro taste. Like when I was a kid with those cheapie glosses my mum used to buy me 🙂 when I was little!

I’ve never actually seen minted rose at sephora only sephora.com! C.O. Bigelow carries a minted rose but it’s not nearly as good!

Oh gosh no. Minted Rose isn’t strong enough for a rub! You have to use the Mentholated Salve for a rub 😉 it’s the Smith’s Mentholated Salve! That one is strong enough to make you feel good when congested 😉

I hate Vick’s too! Way too strong and yuk! But this one is somewhat mild and does just the trick. Normally when I’m sick I rub it on my throat and under my nose and breath the fumes!

    Works a treat!

    Thanks for the comment!
    Hugs!

    Hey Muse,

I just got the Brambleberry Rose and you know what it reminds me of? Those Strawberry Shortcake dolls, with the faint scent of plastic and strawberry. It actually smells good to me, even though that probably sounds not very inviting. I definitely don’t think it smells of berry pie, but it has a unique scent. I like it better than the other scents Rosebud has. 😀

    Hi!
How could it be used for dry pimples if RoseBud works well to sooth the dry skin?

Hello lovely! How are you today? I have been feeling a bit tired lately actually, not good! Well I hope that will sort out soon… Yesterday we had the most fun project in school in design and I feel so creative! Oh by the way, you just HAVE to check out my FOTD on the blog!

As for the Rosebuds… big no no! I have had the original and the strawberry, but they just don’t work for me! Too bad as I love the packaging…

Loads of hugs to you, my dear! 🙂

    Hello Polly said…

I dunno the miracle but it does indeed work for me 🙂

I use it on smaller break outs on my chin and it dries that up and clears it away! It also works well as a spot treatment!

I guess it all depends on your skin type! It’s worth a try for sure!

I checked the CO Bigelow website, and sure enough, there was a mentholated salve available. I’m desperate to try that and Minted Rose! Grrrr… Why won’t Sephora sell them to me! They carry Brambleberry rose, after all! I’ll be on the lookout for them next time I’m at CO Bigelow.

On a related note, have you by any chance heard of Yube Cream? It also has that menthol-camphor smell, and moisturizes my skin and lips like a dream!

Actually, I find mentholatum to clear up acne like no other. I was once told my an esthetician that the camphor in mentholatum will clear acne and the emollients will not let the skin get dried out….it’ amazing! I wonder if Rose’s has some camphor in it..might be why it works so well on acne 🙂

The tins are .08oz size so they are about three times the size of a mac eyeshadow pot!

    hope that helps!

Do you know anything about the animal testing policy of the company? I can’t find any information or contact info and animal testing is an important part of the decision to buy or not for me. Any help would be appreciated! (Great review!)
