Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner Review

I don’t know how but I’ve somehow became a Bobbi Brown groupie (you must be exhausted hearing about Bobbi Brown cosmetics so much this week!). Bobbi Brown is alot like the little boy in kindergarten who hits a little girl because he likes her. I’ve slapped Bobbi Brown around a few times in some old posts as you might recall but it’s probably just me hiding a deeper love for her product then I realized thus I’m the little boy!

I was on a Bobbi Brown kick last week so I purchased her gel eyeliner and I’m hear to rave about it! I’m normally a big fan of KATE gel liner or Smashbox cream liner. I rarely venture outside of using those two brands. Fact of the matter is I do indeed collect many MAC Fluidlines but rarely reach for them! My hand normally goes for either KATE or Smashbox.

Another fact is I rarely line my eyes. A girl on Specktra once told me that in order to wrap up my look it’s best to line my upper lashline and lower waterline and believe me it was the best advice ever because liner really makes an eye look pop! However, I tend to create very bold looks and using liner on top of that makes me look quite like a “painted lady” (read between the lines). You’ll catch me using eyeliner for an evening out or when I’m using a lighter shade of shadow and that’s about it.

Anyway, the story is getting long and you’re getting bored! On with the review!

I don’t normally like gel based liners because I find they apply streaky and I have to fill in the area after I apply. Which means I have to have a steady hand to apply and a steadier hand to reapply because the first time I didn’t get the coverage I wanted to begin with! This happens to me with MAC FL much of the time I use it which puts me into a battle of loving and hating it.

The good news is Bobbi Brown Gel Liner goes on smoothly, seamlessly and once. I don’t have to re-line the area. One line is dark enough and perfect enough to last me all evening (or day) long!

The texture is “melty” and soft but it doesn’t make application difficult. Normally my sole reason I don’t use MAC FL as much as I should is due to the weird melting, soft formula that streaks for me. However, this gel liner applies very dark the first time, no streaks, and gives me a perfect, smooth line! I realize MAC FL has a cult following but I’m not really all that big a fan, sorry guys! However, I’m loving the Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner at the moment!

Three Cheers for this one! It’s Muse Approved!

Before Liner. Aw no pop!

After Liner. POP!

Sorry lots of similar pics! You can tell I was messing with makeup that night big time right?!

No one looks more like a Painted Lady than girls at my local MAC booth; they look like Painted Raccoon Ladies.

Thank you for pointed out the disparity between Bobbi Brown and MAC gel liners! The drag queens at MAC are always trying to convince me that that MAC’s and Bobbi Brown’s gel liners are exactly the same, but I’ve owned an used several liners from both brands, and MAC’s always flaked like crazy and had to be reapplied, while Bobbi’s stayed in place all day (and came in prettier colors, at the time). There’s a noticeable difference in texture and performance to those who have used both eyeliners.

Mandy our bed is still warm but how long it lasts remains to be seen as Row refuses to get in it with me 😉

I find this is creamier and darker. The MAC FL just streaks on me when I apply and I have to sit and go over the line again which is a total bitch for me. I mean it took me a sec just to get the damn line straight and now I have to spend extra time relining it!?
AHHH! GRRRRRR! MAC FL dries really fast too which again makes relining a pain in my bloody arse! Because the first coat is dry and now I’m reapplying a second coat which makes it flake up!

It’s nice to see I’m not nuts and my rave for this particular liner is the same for you!

I love mac and I know a million mac fangirls are going to come down on my head for saying FL sucks but it just does! I prefer this right now or Smashbox! And on occasion I really love KATE but that too sometimes flakes if I live it on too long!

    *MWAH*
    love you!

the bobbi brown gel liner is one of my favorite go-to liners when i want a really pretty polished eye. i’m so glad you mentioned the mac liners as i’ve been wanting to try them out since they’re cheaper than the BB ones but for some reason i just haven’t. i really love the staying power of the BB on my greasy eyelids and the color is fabulous!

I meant to mention that the price between the two is a big one however sometimes the price makes up for the quality and in this case I’d say the price difference is worth it as the bobbi brown has good solid staying power for me, plus it applies very smoothly and flawlessly, and I just find the formula a bit more superior to the MAC FL!

I know many many many people prefer and love MAC FL but I’ve never loved it to be honest and I’ve found far better options and now that I’ve discovered the BB it could become a staple for me!

I have problems with streaky application and my eyes aren’t oily so I can imagine that this could be a problem if you try MAC FL! It’ll streak even more 😛 blah!

Stick with the BB! It’s better in my opinion!

I replied to your last comment btw 😉 about Laneige 😉

    Hugs!

  • christianadivine

great review. :] i use the indelible gel eyeyliner, but wouldn’t know how it compares to other gel liners because i haven’t tried others. LOL. 😛

  • nilla cookie

I, too, LOVE Bobbi Brown gel liners. My only regret is that I STILL haven’t posted my review AND I only have two colors! I really heart your lip color too, what is it?

  • nilla cookie

Muse, I’ve been so busy too that I’m just now making my ’rounds after a couple of days – boy it really catches up!

I’m going to make a search for your lippie – it looks like a lovely peachy shade, I like!

I have the gel liner in black and chocolate shimmer. I was wearing the chocolate a lot a couple of months ago but have now reverted back to my MAC Coffee eye pencil b/c I’m too lazy 😉

  • the Muse

I know! I read several a day and I can’t keep up with my comments, other blog comments, and the crazy amount of email in my inbox! It’s overwhelming sometimes but darn fun hehehe!

Thanks! It’s actually available now since slimshines are back 😉

I was curious about chocolate shimmer that might be my next purchase!

I have to say sometimes pencil is just easier 😉

  • millie

hi muse, i like how you’ve made it look natural yet there’s that hint of eyeliner that makes your eyes pop. do you think the kate gel liners work well/last long? i usually use the MJ jewelling eyeliner in the SV802 and it tends fade a bit after half the day, esp because i have oily eyelids.
would you say that the upper lash line as well as the bottom should be lined to get that “pop” effect? i usually only line the top and it never looks like my eyes are popping out when i take pictures or would that depend on the shadow you’re using as well. any tips on making it look natural?(for asian not so hooded eyes) because it never turns out right and i sorta look weird haha.

hey thanks for stopping by my blog! i’ve been to your blog a couple of times before to check up on your hauls of japanese makeup, as i’m gonna be getting a friend to buy me some from japan soon. any suggestions on what i should get? i’m thinking of getting some majolica majorca palettes, but am wondering how the maquillage ones differ from the mm ones in terms of texture/finish?

  • Anna

I love your eyes! they look like animation. mine are so small =[ you have a great complexion too

  • Bliss

Thanks for the review. It does make your eyes pop heheh, was gonna buy the eyeliner last time, didn’t get too though booo, thanks for stopping by my blog, you have a such great beuty blog p.s im linking you:).

  • Ping.

    Hi!

I love your blog. been a silent reader for quite sometime.. haha. anyway this post of yours certainly help me. I was deciding to buy MAC fluidline or BB gel liner.

  • Aschafava

Hey there. I totally agree with you… Bobbi Brown gel liner rocks! I started off with only one, the Chocolate Shimmer, and now I’ve got 4 pots! It’s really easy to apply (if you’ve seen my Asian eyes, you’ll know why I hate pencil and liquid liners :-D) and doesn’t smudge all that much.

  • the Muse

    hi millie!

Thanks so much! It’s actually not natural it’s more of my makeup rubbed off after so many hours hehehe!

If you have oily lids I don’t recommend KATE. It’ll smudge, flake, and just come off. I don’t have oily lids so KATE is pretty long wearing for me. You can try KATE liner as it’s not too costly but just be sure to powder your lid down so you soak up any excess oil. That might help out the staying power on your liner!

My sister has oily lids and she can’t even wear liner at all as it runs right off her eyes plus she’s a shade or two darker then my own skintone so it makes it difficult finding a good powder to use on her eyes!

In this particular photo I only lined my upper lash line. I find I can get the “pop” by lining my upper or lower. I also find that lining the lower waterline really makes me look wide awake and almost elegant! I’m not beautiful or pretty and I’m cursed with “cuteness” however I find when lining my lower waterline I almost look elegantly pretty!

It’s so difficult for me to recommend you good solid advice for an Asian eye as I’ve never attempted application on anyone but myself. I personally find Asian eyes take very well to color and I’ve seen some REALLY dramatic looks on some girls! I highly recommend visiting specktra for some excellent tutorials on Asian eyes. Snowkei is a user on the forum and she does some of thee most amazing looks I’ve ever seen and some really killer tutorials as well! Also youtube is a fountain of great videos for application!

I find light golds, beiges, and browns are always beautiful for a natural look! I highly recommend night star from NARS for a very quiet natural look! I also

Aw love I doubt it looks weird!
    I hope this somehow helps!

    Hugs!

    hi ‘ * : . b | u 3 . : * ‘

You’re most welcome! I love your blog 🙂

    Thanks for visiting me 😉

God EVERYTHING! LOL! Definately MJ Palettes 😉 I highly recommend nabbing some Sony CP Curvy Silicon lipgloss if you’re a big fan of glosses 😉

MJ Mascara, MJ Palettes and Single Shadows, Beaute de Kose Mascaras (they are awesome), Gransenbon blushes, lavshuca palettes, KATE palettes, LOL I guess I’m a bit excited can you tell!

I find that maquillage palettes stink. The texture between the two is vastly different. MJ has a sort of chalky, creamy texture while maquillage is more of a silky powder. I find I get better color payoff from MJ. I’d definately consider some of the maquillage line but not to shadow palettes they aren’t so hot! The gel liners are pretty good and the cream shadows are alright it’s just the powder shadows I’m not so in lust with!

If you look through my “spotlights” label you can go through all my japanese videos to see what looks appealing to you! If you need swatches, fotds, or closer pics of palettes let me know! I’d be happy to help!

Japanese cosmetics are a passion of mine 😉

  • the Muse

    hi Anna!

Aw thanks so much love. I call them buggy! hehe! Aw small eyes aren’t bad! I find smaller set eyes very pretty and exotic! truly you don’t want to be cursed with large eyes like mine! They dominate my face! BLAH!

  • the Muse

    hi Bliss!

You’re most welcome, it’s my pleasure!

I’m loving your blog 🙂 Thanks for visiting me here and commenting! Appreciate it big time 🙂

    I’ll link you too!

    hi Ping!

Thanks for coming out of lurkdom to comment 😉 hehe! I love talking to my readers 😉 Honey go with the BB. It’s a little more expensive but it works way better in my opinion!

    😉

Don’t be a stranger to the comment box 🙂 I look forward to speaking with you more!

  • the Muse

    hey Aschafava!

YAY another BB Lover 😉 I’m dying for Chocolate Shimmer after you and another person mentioned it. It looks so nice and I bet it’ll go well with my eye color!

I HATE liquid liners! I probably hate ’em so much because I’m crap at applying them lol!

As I type this I’m visiting your blog! Your gorgeous 😉

    Thanks for the comment 😉

    Hugs!

  • petitez

I love BB’s gel liners. I have them in chocolate shimmer and violet ink. The only eyeliners that I reach out for everyday. I think BB’s apply abit smoother then Kate’s. But they both last whole day long and doesn’t smudge or flake! Go get chocolate shimmer. I think its pretty. 🙂

  • Titty

Muse! I’m glad you’re feeling better. I have a really STRANGE question though.

I just noticed your Bobbi Brown eyeliner brush….

and a few years ago my mom was in overseas and bought me a “H03 Solone.” It looks EXACTLY like your brush. (Googled pic:

What do you know about Solone? Is it a knock off or another name for Bobbi Brown? My god! I’m confused!! LOL

  • asianbeauty

I can’t believe you just “found” this product! This is my “holy grail” and that says alot cuz i rarely find a product that i can consider as “holy grail”. I can’t live without eyeliners (as I’m an asian girl with small eyes) and you wouldn’t be able to drag me out of my house without eyeliner. I’ve tried all sorts of eyeliners there are in the market (from Japanese to Western brands, pencil, liquid, to gel).. and when I finally found Bobbi Brown’s gel liner, I was ecstatic. It lasts all day and I never have to reapply throughout the day like I would need to with other types of eyeliners! Anyway, just wanted to share my story =) i’m so glad the BB gel liner is muse approved!

  • the Muse

    hi serene!

I’m so lemming that chocolate shimmer everyone is discussing 🙂

The lasting power on this is fantastic! As much as I love KATE I believe this lasts WAY longer 😉

Chocolate shimmer is definately making it’s way into my cart!

  • the Muse

    hi asianbeauty!

I know! I can’t believe it’s taken me this long either. I’m always skeptical of BB products but I’m now a believer 😉 This is definately a staple for me now!

I’m shocked at the overwhelming amount of GREAT reviews on this as when I originally posted it I thought everyone would be commenting about how FL is the absolute best and I’m nuts for loving the BB one so much!

Thanks for commenting and sharing your review 😉

Don’t be a stranger! I love discussing cosmetics with you guys!

    *hugs*

  • PaoPao

I’m in an eyeliner phase myself, too. I’m using MAC’s fluidlines, kohl and eye pencils, but I have also heard so good comments on BB’s eyeliner… I guess I’ll have to try…

  • the Muse

    hi PaoPao!

Don’t read the comments 😉 It’ll make you want the BB liner more hehe!

I’m definately on a liner kick too and I’m loving this one!

  • the Muse

hi tittyyyy! how are you love?

Ask away 😉 No question is strange!

Hmm very interesting! Solone is a Taiwanese brand I think!?

It’s definately not another name for BB it’s probably just similar in style 😉

My KATE brush has the same rounded tip as the BB one (not the same wooden handle though).

Many companies make similar items to designer brands at cheaper prices and I imagine the Solone one did just that with this eyeliner brush 😉 and I bet it’s just as good as the BB one!

    Hope this helps!!!!!

    =)

  • Tracy

Hi Muse ! I think the eyeliner/gel looks gorgeous on you !! I usually use eye pencil but lately, I wanted to have something with a bigger boom effect… I was thinking of this eye gel from Bobbi Brown because I know many eye gels do the streaky refilling thing you described ! You’re so accurate ! So my question is, is this effect a bit like a liquid eyeliner ? What is better ?
    Thanks !

    • the Muse

thanks tracy! not really like liquid eyeliner hun…I think liquid gives more dramatic results in all honesty but gel is the next best thing for me since I can’t use liquid at all, my skillz suck 🙂
