KATE Spring Collection 2008: Review and First Impressions

I’m really lagging behind with this review! I meant to do it last week but Fafi took up residence on my blog and I was obsessing over it so this particular collection got shoved behind!

The good news is I’m here this morning to review it for you, babble a bit, and give you my 1st impressions of the KATE Spring Collection for 2008!

My original impression of the new KATE line was a bit of a snore. I was on a bit of a Spicy overload as I have practically every single palette in the Spicy line so new ones did kinda make me take pause and wonder did I need these? I guess it got the better of me and I did end up indulging in some of the new line up!

One item that particularly caught my eye was the newest color in the Glamtrick palettes. In keeping with the current flair of green that’s splashed all over the place KATE released a greenish Glamtrick palette that I am absolutely in love with at the moment! This palette contains an assortment of shimmering shades to make up that perfect green eye look and if you’re so inclined you might want to dab a bit of purple in somewhere to create the coveted green and purple look that’s so popular at the moment! The palette contains 4 shadows total and one liner color. The colors are a range of greens, silvers, and white while the liner is a deep dark forest green. The entire affair is pure perfection in my eyes and I’ve been eager to try this out since getting it!

Speaking of palettes the newest ones to grace KATE’s line are the Line Spicy N Collection. Nothing to new about these aside from colors. The line consists of two shadows and two liners that you can interchange to create some very simple yet bold looks! I got two color selections from the give offered.

You don’t absolutely have to run out and get these. They are very nice color combos but aren’t something you have to have if you currently have a large wish list I’d say push these to the bottom! I ended up purchasing them because in all honesty they are cheap as stale chips so I firgured I might as well! But if you’re unable to get them at retail I suggest picking up the newest Glamtrick instead!

The two color selections I purchased were GD-1 and PK-1. PK-1 contains a shimmering pink eyeshadow and a beige shadow with complimenting liners of white and beige while GD-1 contains shimmering shadows in gold and brown and liners in blue and white.

GD-1

KATE also introduced a square cut eye liner which I am in love with. This is a very chunky square cut liner that contours perfectly to the lash line. I love it simply because it creates a rather gorgeous smoked out eye without the need for smudging it yourself. The liner is quite thick so you can create a large outlandish line or you can rub it along your lash line for a very smokey look! This is most definately worth picking up and is truly a gem of a liner! Ideally you can create a thin line with it if you desire but it’ll take a bit of work however using it as a tool for creating a thick line or just for smudging some liner on is absolutely perfect! I adore that this eliminates one step in creating a smoked out liner look! When “smoking” my liner I normally line and then proceed to smudge with a q-tip, brush, or finger however with this liner I can smudge as I walk it across my lashline! Sheer perfection! Good job with this KATE!

I ended up purchasing the newest KATE Gel Mascara as well which I’ve already reviewed in a prior post! Click here for details!

Last but not least are the newest colors in the Powder Gel Liner! I already have a majority of the gel liners and these new colors particularly caught my eye. Both are metallic, shimmering shades of gold and silver and simply gorgeous! I’ve already used the gold in a few of my past FOTD’s from last week and the week before! I’m super chuffed with these. The liner formula is absolutely dreamy and a bit different from past KATE gel liners. It’s almost like applying a thin layer of powdered shimmer onto my lashline! So pretty and unique! For my Maquillage lovers you’ll be happy to know that they did similar color releases with their Spring line up! I was debating on the KATE and the Maquillage ones for a while and just ended up with KATE because it was cheaper plus I’ve tried them before and was happy with the results!

Overall, the collection has some really great items in it! I highly suggest nabbing the new square cut liner, the gel liners, and the new Glamtrick palette!

Hi Muse,

Im KC~ ive been lurking at your page for two months now.

Ahh, i like the new gel liners. Too bad cant get my hands on them. I have the BK2. I got the BK2 because my cousin said it was better with the glitter but I kind of regret it now I prefer no glitter in my gel liner. Oh wells..

We love to see all the newest Jap products you review.
Have you ever thought about selling any of the makeup you buy? I know you have practically ever single collection and you cant possibly use them all up. Just a thought if you ever want to sell any of your goodies I’m sure a lot of us would like to try them.

Hey Izzie, I love the pics of the silver and gold gel liners! I’ll definitely have to pick these up on my next trip to Japan!

Hi KC!

Thanks for coming out of lurkdom to say hello :) Don’t be a stranger to the comment box! I love hearing from readers!

The gel liners are super nice! I have the BK2 as well! I kinda of line the soft sparkle of it. But I’m a bit of a sparkle addict ;) sooooo!

So happy you guys are enjoying the Japanese reviews!

To be honest it’s rare I find an item that I am willing to part with. Any items I don’t love normally end up for swap on MUA!

It’s true I probably won’t use them up but I definately like having them on hand when I want to create a look with ‘em :)

I’ll definately consider doing a sell page in the future with bits that aren’t particularly working for me!! Maybe I’ll work on that soonish!

Thanks for the comment again!

Hugs!

Hey Iris!

These are worth a check out! Very nice formula and texture. I’m dead curious what they are like in comparison to the Maquillage Silver and Gold that were released.

Hope you’re well!

i’d be interested to see a fotd from you using that Glam trick palette :) the colours look rather sheer, are they?

Reply

the Muse February 18, 2008 at 5:00 pm

your wish is my command :) I’ll use it tomorrow!

KATE has some very pigmented palettes and this particular glamtrick palette is no different. Not sheer at all :)

It allows you to pack on some beautiful sparkling color! of course not as pigmented as say a mac eyeshadow but pretty nice pigmentation on these ;)

I’ll do an FOTD with it tomorrow ;)

ooh thanks! I’ll look out for it :D

i have another question :) how do Kate’s gel liners compare to MAC’s as a liner, and as a cream base?

thanks in advance!

I have the green Glam Trick quint (but haven’t used it yet =X)
I have also the silver and golden MQ liners…they are pretty but rather sheer (you need to build them up!) and go on a bit unevenly (maybe my shaky hand is the one to blame) but have a really pretty metallic finish!
I also have the Kate liner in BK-3 which also came out now for Spring. I am really sad that they d/c BK-2 for BK-3 =( BK-3 is supposedly metallic but I just get a quite flat grayish-black line =(
For some reason the Line Spicy N didn’t appeal to me so I skipped them!

Oh! Glamtrick GN1 looks gorgeous! Could you do a FOTD using it?? :) The powder gel liner in gold looks great! I’ve got to add it to my list the next round!

hi ‘ * : . b | u 3 . : * ‘!

You’re most welcome! Hope you like how it came out. Just posted it!

I’ve never used the KATE’s liners as a base to be honest. I’ll try and let you know. They aren’t as pigmented as MAC FL. I find I have to build the color up on my lashline but they also don’t streak the way MAC FL do on me! I’ve heard stories of flakes on the KATE but I’ve always had good experiences with them! They work a treat for me.

They aren’t the best quality available but definately fall into the good category ;)

I’ll see about using them as a base and let you know!

hi kathi!

*mwah*

I’m looking forward to your FOTD using this palette!

I haven’t yet tried the MQ Liners but the KATE ones are pretty nice. I didn’t have to build up color too much and it’s kinda of like applying a thin line of powder along my lashline very nice!

I wanted to try bk3 but I was skeptical it might be like the other black version they have with silver.

The Line Spicy N can be a skip for sure as it isn’t much different from the standard Line Spicy. The colors were nice and I was just curious about them so decided to try them out!

;)

hiya ???!

Thanks for all these wonderful comments I’m enjoying talking to you!

I like the PK myself :) I’m loving the GN1 in the Glamtrick Palette. it’s so beautiful!

i am v v much in love with the line spicy range, and am very much in love with the PK in the new line spicy n!!

The texture is very very different as the original formula is more a of a liner and thicker where as these are almost like a gel to a powder. Basically they feel a bit like applying glitter/shimmer to your lash line. If you want you can even use them as a shadow I’d say as they are a completely different formula from the regular black/brown/color liners.

I really like them alot. It gives a touch of fine shimmer to my lash line! Beautiful!

I don’t think the purple and blue are the same metallic finish are they? I’ll have to go look if so I want them lol!

I like Kate Gel Liner anyway but these take that original product and bring it to a new level with an interesting finish!

Hope this helps!

Hugs!

hm…
i think the purple and blue are more of the black/brown series and texture, but i’m not quite sure though…

what i read from japanese magazine it seems like there’s a release of the black liner with colourful shimmers, not sure but it sounds pretty!

will do some checking and let you know if i’ve find anything interesting!

hi ???!

I think you are right! I think the only “metallic” shades are gold and silver ;)

Oh yes I have the black liner with silver shimmer. It’s ok but not great as I don’t see the shimmer so much!

Thanks for your awesome comments ;)

Hey dear! Been wanting to get Kate’s gel liners for quite a while, but a little concerned whether they’re contact lens safe! Also, do you use them to line your waterline? I really love tightlining but I’m not sure whether these liners smudge/disappear from my waterline like most other eyeliners!

Thanks in advance :D !

Reply

the Muse November 13, 2008 at 2:06 pm

hi style factor!!!!!!!!!

I don’t use this on my waterline and I’m unsure if they are waterline safe to be honest :P Honestly if I were you I’d go with smashbox pot liner or mac fl…it’s waterline safe and doesn’t crack…kate has been known to crack and peel :P

I hope this helps!
