Clinique Superbalanced Powder Makeup Review

My mum’s Italian so grating cheese is some kind of art form at her house. Indeed, anything that has to do with cheese, sauce, garlic, and pasta is quite like the Mona Lisa.

Since I’m such a professional in the cheese grating department, thanks mum, it wasn’t any surprise I quickly adapted to using the new Clinique Superbalanced Powder Makeup.

Cheese grater you say Muse?

Indeed, makeup application as easy as grating cheese for your favorite pasta dish.

Housed in a super size compact this powder is sure to please the techy lot of us all. This Muse happens to adore anything having to do with gadgetry and Clinique brings it. The powder is actually a press formula laid into the bottom well of a compact. Placed on top is a grinder which allows you to twist and “grate” or “grind” freshly shaven mineral powder. Cool right? Seriously how techy can you get people, loves it! The dial is nifty as it keeps the powder fresh and allows complete portion control. Dial up alot or a little powder depending on your needs.

The formula is supposedly made for all skin types but this could prove a bit much for my overly dry skin come Winter as it’s pretty heavy mineral wear. It wears well on my pore-less, currently combination skin. It applies and blends nicely although it comes with a brush to do this I didn’t really dig on the brush as it felt scratchy on my skin. Application with a large fluff brush or a kabuki is recommended as I found it evens out coverage and applies more precisely compared to the one the powder comes with.

I was reading a few reviews that said coverage is sheer and of course the product itself is advertised as moderate pigmentation. Taking this into consideration I was ever so slightly shocked as I thought it was pretty heavily pigmented and would offer sheer to medium or even heavier coverage depending on application. Of course, I did take note that using a heavier hand creates a cakey, mask-like look, not pretty. Sheer to medium coverage combats oily, shiny areas well and it wears long although not eight hours as advertised. I’d say after 5 hours or so I need a touch up. The formula didn’t leave me itchy so I assume it doesn’t contain talc which is always a good thing.

One important fact is to do be careful when “grating”. I got a little grate happy and proceeded to shave off a bit too much powder. Try to refrain from twisting the dial a few hundred times just because….it’s so not a good idea. One half turn should give you plenty of product to work with and one full turn could possibly over do it…remember kids, a little goes a long way.

The formula does contain an SPF 15 with 3:1 UVB/UVA protection. According to Clinique this is actually the suitable amount of sun screen needed to for skin. But, if you know the Muse, you know she prefers her sun screen a bit higher up there.

Overall, if you’re a big fan of powder or mineral makeup this should appeal big time. As for me it was a bit too heavy feeling on my face. I love the packaging, liked that it evened out my skin tone nicely, however the powder itself felt a bit to rich for me. I’m more of a cream, liquid foundation user so it’s likely I’ll never adjust to powder foundation or minerals in any form. Testing this out was interesting but I probably won’t indulge again once I run out.

I’d recommend it for those who simply adore powder or mineral foundation as it’s formula could appeal especially as it does a very good job keeping evil oily skin at bay.

Clinique Superbalanced Powder Makeup is available now at www.clinique.com for $32.50.

This product is an exact copy of my Smashbox Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder in Fair that I keep at the office for touchups on my face. I hate when companies copy each other. Smashbox should have patented this technology.

      Hi Mary Ellen

I think you’ll see alot of this design this Fall 🙂 It’s rather nifty. Ah what can you do? Lots of companies come out with similar products that’s always the fun of makeup though trying the one that’s best 😀

    • Marilyn

      Mary-Ellen,
Another company has already come out with a powder+grater compact (I think it was Lancome or Estee Lauder?). Beauty companies ALWAYS copy each other–remember the whole mineral craze?

Muse, thanks for the review! Personally, I love that Clinique copied Smashbox because I’ve always found Smashbox products to be overpriced and not very good. I love Clinique and am really excited to try their version…Now that my skin is clearing up, I could probably go with a powder foundation 🙂

      • the Muse

yup that’s def one of the tricks of this trade. everyone copies everyone else but I find that ok as it’s always fun seeing who will top who and who creates it better or what are the differences between the products, etc 😀

My pleasure 😀 Clinique is very affordable so that’s a plus for sure. I can’t really wear powder all year round….in the Summer when I’m a bit of a combo but winter comes and I’m all dry so no way can I use this come winter 😛

It’s a bit to heavy for me but it’s overall pretty very good. It’s fragrance free and the likes so your skin will be a ok using it 😀

  • Marley

Did you find a color match in this? I have never found a Clinique foundation that matches until they brought out the Almost Powder makeup about a year or so ago. The very palest one matches me if I’m self-tanning. So I guess that’s not really a match…anyway, how’d you find the color? Good?

    • the Muse

      Hi Marley

Color I got was a bit too beige for me. I’m heading to counter actually later this week as I want to see what other shades are on offer. I got Natural 4 and it was incredibly beige 😛 Not good. But they have 2 and 3 natural which look like they’ll suit me. This is the first time I tried foundation of any kind from Clinique so I’m unsure what color match I am with them 😀

  • Row

    Ah it loaded.

I saw this the other day and have been dying for it. Don’t trust Smashbox, but I didn’t fancy buying the Elizabeth Arden one but now you have put me off this one too. Gah!

    • the Muse

      hey row

I seen the EA one too. I was wondering about it. Hmmm don’t be put off too much I’m just not a powder user. If you generally like to use powder foundations you’ll prob love this. I’m more a cream foundation use particularly BB cream so applying powder as my foundation daily is just a weird experience for me 😛

  • Mallory

Just bought this make-up this evening in natural 2 – i’m really excited to try it but so scared…I recently had a flare up after trying Bare Escentuals Minerals and just read through the list of ingredients only to learn they are nearly identical. I can only hope that because Clinique products are allergy-tested that I will be ok…let’s hope!!! 🙂 I love the idea, and the coverage it provides!

    • the Muse

hi Mallory! oooo BE does the same to me don’t feel bad! They do have very similar ingredients but so far I’ve been thankfully itch free after use! the talc worried me! Let me know how it works out for you!

  • Marvina

Hey Everyone! I just purchased this Clinique powder this week and am liking it a bit. I definitely agree, when the woman at the makeup counter made up my face, she used a GREAT powder brush that worked WAY better than the small antibacterial brush included in the powder case.
My skin is combination, and it does a GREAT job keeping my face shine-free ALL day. I guess right now in my life (about to turn 20) I’m experimenting with the best makeup. Clinique is good for your skin (great!) but are there better products?

    * ALSO to Marylin I think, you’re right 🙂 But ironically, a lot of people do not know that companies usually buy each other out, that’s why there are so many duplicates in the makeup industry. Estee Lauder OWNS Clinique. 🙂

Hope this helps. It’s a really great product.

    • the Muse

      hi Marvina!

Totally. I love the fact it’s an antibacterial brush but it was a bit scratchy on my skin 😛 It’s all about testing and trying for me Marvina. I personally use cream alot for my foundation particularly BB Creams from Korea. It’s a mater of experimenting to see what works best on your skin and which is most comfortable for your and solves any skin woes you may have….ie oily skin, pimples, dullness, etc….:)

      Thanks for sharing!!!

  • Amanda

Muse try it over Super City Block 25 or 40, its Clinique’s makeup primer/protector, amp ups the protection and helps it stick so you use less and it lasts longer and try pressing with the brush instead of brushing, the brush is less prickly and the application is smother :). I also mist mine down with moisture surge spray for added moisture now that its so cold and dry.

    • the Muse

hey amanda thanks for the tips doll! will do 😀 the brush is a little itchy feeling 😀 I’ll try as you said 😀 and use the rest of your tips and tricks 🙂

  • Lexi

Ooh I love this! For some reason all other mineral make up seem to sit in my crater pores, but not this one 🙂

  • chiqui

hi muse! i was wondering if you could tell me the shade you are using since we pretty much have the same color and most of your shade choices matches mine. thanks!

    • the Muse

hi chiqui not sure what shade this was…I’ll have to look when I get home!

  • nelly

Muse muse! Please help! First, you an awesome blogger! and it seems like you have tried it all! 😀 haha. I trust you to help me with this: I want to buy my next foundation. It’s between Clarins Evelasting foundation and this one, Clinique superbalanced (but probably the liquid one. Have you tried it?)
My skin is Combination Oily, some blemishes and redness, and I like foundations to have good staying power. Wich would you reccomend me? 😀 Thanks muse!

    • the Muse

thanks nelly 🙂 appreciate the kind words. Sorry, I haven’t tried either one as of yet. Clarins one is on my list but haven’t picked it up yet. Can’t really recommend either if I haven’t tried them 🙁

  • Elizabeth

Hey! i’m buying this loose powder, but i’m really unsure on what color i should order. I’m a mix of light and dark, and have no clue on what i should go for. which color do you have? 🙂

  • Genevieve

I just got the Clinique Super-balanced liquid foundation and really like it (so far I suppose), but I think I got the wrong shade when the Sephora ladies matched me up 😛 Anyways I think you’d really like it.
