Musings of the Day: Kickin’ It Old School

musings

Ahhh days of old. The Muse loves reliving her youth and remembering really bad makeup choices and drugstore purchases gone horribly wrong.

Let’s see….

I remember Sea Breaze which was the equivalent to deep skin diving with a cotton ball. I swear that stuff removed oil, dirt, skin, and all. It dried me out like the Sahara Desert but lord knows it sure dug deep. Am I alone in my twisted love for this stuff? Granted I’d never use now thanks to being in the know about alcohol and dry skin but back than it was incredible.

What else….

Bonnie Bell Lip Smackers! Totally where my pokemon, collect ’em all disease originated from. I had to HAVE all the flavors when I was like 11 or 12. I remember for Christmas my sister would always stuff my stocking with the 100 pack….remember those packs of a million? I was all kinds of cool for having that many flavors.

Hmmm…..let’s see…..there are more I’m sure of it.

Oh yes! Nozema! Actually it’s still an old age favorite around these parts and has a prominent space on my shower shelf. I slather it on like nobody’s biz while I’m doing my thing in the shower. All that stinging has to mean it’s deep cleaning right? No seriously I love this stuff.

What are some of your old school favs?

I’m ever hopeful some of you are as old as me and can kick back and remember the good old days of wacky skincare and makeup finds.

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. Umm… old drug store faves… that’s though!

I’m guessing my old school is not so old, being that I’m still in College! But I remember fondly my junior high days when I used LipSmackers in its liquid presentation (seemed less childish than the normal solid one back in the day) I still love it and yes, the smell still makes me want to eat it O__o! but I don’t use them any more.

Also one of my very first contacts with make up (for I must admit I was a makeup hater until I turned, lets see… 16 maybe? and I only began to use ACTUAL makeup as in foundation and stuff when I turned 18-19) was with the NYC eyeliners in black and storm gray. Also there was this tiny little product by Clean & Clear which was a tiny compact of blue blotting powder that came with a little puff, I SO loved that stuff! I still swear it is the best blotting powder I’ve used

      Hi Kiera!

Hehe…lucky you wish I was still at school 😀 LOL I know the feeling about BB products they smell so good I wanna eat them too! I remember that C&C blotting powder hehe! I think they might still have it available?! I must go check as I recall having one a few years ago hehe!

      Good picks!

I love Bonne Bell lipsmackers. They aren’t widely available in the UK so I used to stock up when I make a trip over to the States. I’m old and I still love them! I particularly love the Dr. Pepper one as it has a red tint which works as a tinted lip balm, perfect for low key make-up days. I have an obsession with the giant lip smackers that Bonne Bell introduced a couple of years ago and have been collecting them as there’s something so pleasing about the massive chunky glue-stick proportions!

    • the Muse

me too bora LOL 😀 we are like kids. OMG I remember the giant ones!!!!!! LMAO! Those are fab!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Jin

I love lipsmackers (still XD)! They are not available here, so when I was younger, I could only get them through swaps. But in recent years, that little plastic card with the magnetic strip has helped me get them haha! I think I have more than 20 now @__@ In fact, there’s 2 sitting on my office desk now : Candy Egg easter balm & Pink Vanilla frosting roll on. I’m not too much a fan of the balms, but I prefer all the other sorts they release like the liquid ones with yummy flavors! They have 100 packs?!

    Hmm…
I’m not too sure if you consider this old school, but I used to have the whole entire set of the Clean & Clear range, which totally dried out my skin! On top of that, I was using Benzoyl Peroxide too!

OH and I still love the little blue Nivea Creme tin of moisturiser! I slather it on before I sleep!

    • the Muse

hey jun! here too. I haven’t purchased on in years but lord knows was addicted as a kid. it’s like crackfor little girl’s LOL

god pink vanilla frosting sounds yums! LOL oh no total exaggeration on my part no 100 pack but they used to have the big old 10 and 15 pack. LOL! You’re a young’in Clean and Clear wasn’t even around when I was a little or least I can’t remember it :0D

Maybelline Kissing Coolers!!! Omg I loved them. The peppermint one was my favorite. I remember my principle at the catholic school I went to as a kid actually confiscating a tube of Kissing Coolers from me thinking it was actual lipstick (makeup was not allowed at school) and then returning it to me after I explained it was lipbalm lol.

Let’s see, I remember wanting Electric Youth stuff because I <3ed Debbie Gibson lol. There was this apple scented Shampoo from this company called Capri that smelled so good to me back then. Exclamation was the first perfume I loved to wear and I remember that a Caboodle came out from the company that I received as a Christmas Gift when I was like 11.

Oh yes, and I remember my 9 year old self and my best friend at the time tipping into Shine Free eyeshadows her mom would give her. the cute pink boxes of bright blue shadow.

    • the Muse

omg yes yes yes! I remember those. How old are you??? LOL she prob wanted it for herself!

omg I had exclaimation too! It was my first real perfume 😀 hehe really adoring your reply…you must be around my age!

          • Del

wuahahah…I too had exclamation as my first “real” perfume! I loved the packaging…don’t they still sell it at some stores? that brings back some old memories, but heaven forbid I smell it nowadays as it would prolly give me a headache instead of nostalgia…

          • the Muse

LOL del! I remember it well. YES! Especially in gift sets around Christmas. LOL hells yes on the headache…it’s awful…why I ever thought it was good is beyond me! LMAO!

  • MissTat

I used to LOVE the Bonne Bell lipglosses (specially the clear mint-scented one, and a shimmery one that smelled like caramelized sugar) I forgot the name of those, I think they were lip lites? apparently they still make them, but I can’t find them anywhere here anymore.
Also their eyeliners, I remember my favorites were a pearly iridescent white and a denim blue.
I used to glop on Loreal Voluminous Mascara (ew!) and NYC rollerball strawberry scented lipgloss. (LOVED that lipgloss!!!!)
and that Noxzema stuff? My mom used to lather my sister and me with it after a really bad sunburn. She’d put it in the fridge first and it would be super cold, but make the burn feel so much better!

    • the Muse

hey misstat you aren’t alone babe 😀 LOL I remember the rollerball glosses as well although itwas NYC at the time can’t recall who it was by 😀 My cousin swore by Nozema for sunburns LOL!

thanks for kicking it back old school with me 🙂

  • Ashe

Hey Muse! I too am a Bonne Bell fan, still am. My BFF (girl version) and I love lipgloss and we talk about it like twelve-year-olds.

From my youth, a lot of scents remind me of the past! Anything old by Calgon, really, and Moonlight Dream by Caboodles especially! Also, older scents by Bath and Body, like Freesia (the straight-up Freesia) and a daffodil scent.

Target, I think it was, also had a mini-line, with body sprays, incense (I think), and bath beads…they had scents like Ambition (my favorite), Love, and such. It reminded me of Gap’s scents and I think it was called My Generation.

    Also, lots of glitter. 🙂

    • the Muse

      hey ashe!

hehe awesome 😀 god I remember Caboodles 😀 remember the makeup line a few years ago? lord knows fressia was like a sig scent forme in jr high LOL! amen to lots of gltter LMAO!

  • Del

Santa puts a Strawberry LipSmacker in my stocking every year – my daughter always says, “Chapstick again Mommy? Santa knows you so well.” LOL…he always gets her different flavors since she likes to try other flavors…funny enough, I never used this till I was maybe in high school or college & use it every day now…what year did they start making those anyway? poor hubby hates the smell & flavor of it & won’t dare kiss me or drink from the same cup after I put it on…the only downside =P

    • the Muse

haha dell! god I wonder…probably the 80’s? or maybe as far back as the 70’s!!!!!!! LOL! awww lol! sounds like he just isn’t loving the lipsmackers hehe. hehe your daughter sounds adorable though!

  • Bonnie

Muse, I have no idea how I missed this post before…but I am seriously LOL. I fondly (?!) remember all of the products you mentioned and most of the ones mentioned here. (I’m 33 and was a serious child of the 80s…) I LOVED the gift sets. I would not leave the house without spritzing on Love’s Baby Soft or Charlie or the like…I also remember these very chalky-tasting crayon-shaped “lipsticks” as a child that came in plastic “crayon” cases…they were kind of “pre makeup” I think. They came in lovely colors like orange and light purple, LOL. I tried every benzoyl peroxide cream known to man but was a particular fan of Oxy as I recall. 🙂 You know what’s interesting about Sea Breeze? At one time I was having some major scalp issues (horrible flaking and what not) due to extreme stress, and a hair stylist recommended that I comb some Sea Breeze through my scalp/hair…so I did that a few times and it really seemed to work! Not its original use though…although I do keep a bottle handy, as it does provide a perverse pleasure from time to time to see a cotton ball covered in dirt and grime taken from your face! 🙂

    • the Muse

hey bonnie sorry for the very delayed reply, been swamped with comments 😀

hehe! I’m 32, total child of the 80’s as well 😀 No way! Sea Breeze on a dry scalp? seriously. Funny story my threading girl for my brows she dabs it on after she’s done my eyebrows…WEIRD 😀 lol! LOL HELLS YES IT DOES! I do the same. I have a bottle under my sick lord knows it really does lift the dirt and grime damn shame it sucks the moisture clean out of my skin!

haha loved hearing your tales of old :-0D!
