Reader’s Request: Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer Review

Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer 3

The Muse apologies this review is a long time coming. Many of you asked and asked for a review of Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer but other things got ahead of me so I never did bring you that review.

I recently ran out of the concealer so the perfect opportunity arose to remind myself to get the review written and presented to my patient readers.

Jump ahead to read my take on Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer.

Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer is an absolute cult favorite and graces many a makeup junkie’s bag. The most common question to arise when discussing this particular concealer would be, “Is it worth the price?”

You know…it’s really difficult to say if it’s worth it or not. At $70 it’s actually not so much more than what I pay for my HG (holy grail) concealer palette from Bobbi Brown. I believe, when available, the BB palette sets me back $56 or $65. But for some reason or another I do so prefer Bobbi over Cle de Peau simply because I feel I’m getting alot more. I get three cream concealers plus a setting powder with that set where as this is one simple cream stick concealer. $70 for a stick concealer could be considered a bit too expensive a price to pay to conceal eyes and other skin woes. There in lays that question again though….”Is it worth it?”

No.

It’s not worth it.

Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer 2

It’s an incredible concealer but the raving that surrounds it makes it a bit over hyped. Do I buy it when I run low? How many times have I purchased it? Is it HG? Yes, I do purchase it when I run low. I’ve purchased it a total of three times since discovering it. No, for me, it’s not HG. Like most posh brand cosmetics I feel like I’m buying into the name rather than the product. The product itself is quality but for $70 I do wince each time I purchase one.

The perks of the concealer are it’s moisturizing, creamy formula which glides on beautifully and creates a good flawless canvas. It does have a certain airbrushed look when using it under your eyes. It’s smooth, it’s creamy, it doesn’t settle into fine lines, nor does it cake but it does not have long wear or at least in my experience it doesn’t. I get better wear from my Bobbi Brown concealer in my humble opinion. Yes, it’s pigmented but not so much it’s going to completely hide dark circles.

I fear this is turning into a ranty picky review when in fact I actually love the concealer. The problem for me is it’s a bit over hyped and does present itself, by makeup users, as the end all concealer as in I’ll never have to buy another concealer again after using this because it’s perfect in all ways. That’s just not the case for me. I continue to purchase Cle de Peau Concealer because I’m a bit of a concealer junkie and like to surround myself with a few options when covering up my under eye woes. Cle de Peau happens to be a favorite and falls into the lines of my daily prep however I do tend to reach for my BB palette alot more.

Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer 1

Overall, this concealer would be more of a winner if the formula wore a little longer and the price tag was a little less. $70 proves too much to spend for the average middle of the road makeup user I believe. The concealer used to have a little bit of a lower price tag but honestly not so much less than what it is now. The stick will last ages when used daily but still it fails to wow me and this can simply be chalked up as a product that’s just been too over hyped. It’s a case of the read the hype syndrome, get terribly excited about the concealer of all concealers, and proceed to be crushed when it doesn’t quite turn out as great as you though it was going to be.

Loving you Cle de Peau Concealer but not enough to forgive your price tag.

Feel free to share your joy or woes about this concealer.

Curious minds if you tried it and absolutely can’t live without it.

As for the Muse she can probably go on without it, her life won’t be over if she can’t buy it again.

Thanks for this review, Muse. Question: I have a dark, bluish birthmark under one eye for which I currently use M.A.C.’s Studio Finish SPF 35 concealer. It’s an okay concealer, but I want a more heavy duty one with lasting power. Do you think the Bobbi Brown concealer palette would be better? Any other suggestions?

    • the Muse

      h mara how are you

Ahh! One of my best friend’s in high school had this problem. I wouldn’t go with Bobbi for this I’d go for something professional. Have you tried dermablend? http://www.dermablend.com/allproducts/ this is something that’s meant to cover up tats and birthmarks, etc…very heavily pigmented. is your birthmark very large or just small? If it’s small you might be able getting away with using Kat Von D’s Concealer. I have a review posted.

      Hope this helps you!

  • Mara

The birthmark isn’t so big that it covers half my face or anything. It’s sort of in that triangle area beneath one eye. Also, it’s not so dark that a concealer can’t cover it, thank goodness, but it does have to be concealed well or I risk looking like a panda, lol.

Thanks for the Dermablend suggestion. I was looking at three options: Kat Von D’s tattoo concealer, Amazing Cosmetics Amazing concealer, and Ben Nye/Kryolan (they’re both theatrical make up) concealer wheels. If you have any thoughts on any of them, I’d appreciate it.

    • the Muse

hi mara sorry for the delayed reply. that’s not bad at all 😀 awww! I wake up and look like hells with dark circles so I understand about needing to conceal. My pleasure.

      Kat Von D=Very good.
      Amazing=Haven’t tried yet
Love both the BN and the Kryolan but I find them both very very drying. I have a BN review up actually somewhere. They are richly pigmented but my age has dried my eyes out terribly so this creases a fair bit on me and ages me 😛

I’d try the Kat Von D…I truly loved it. plus Sephora will easily exchange it if you hate it!

    thanks for the review muse!

For $70 you’re allowed to be picky.

It’s a shame about the longevity – it sounds perfect apart from that. I guess i will stick with my a little drying but amazing coverage shu uemura pro concealer for now.

    • the Muse

      my pleasure lyn 😀

hehe I like to think so! It’s quite good but doesn’t quite last as long as I’d like…..BB has my heart 😀

I think I am ready to take the plunge and purchase the Cle de Peau Beaute concealer. I am Caucasian with an olive complexion. I tan very easy, but lighten up in the face quite a bit in the winter. I am 50 years old and just now experiencing brown/purplish under the eyes, making me look tired. What color do you advise of the concealer, and where can I purchase it, at the cheapest price. I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mall or inet purchase? I hope you can respond!

    • the Muse

      hi bonnie

it’s available in Neiman Marcus. I highly suggest heading to your counter to try it out. I’m not really sure which shade would best suit you love. It’s better to go to your counter and get fitted for the perfect shade 😀 If you want cheaper you can also try out Bobbi Brown for a concealer, their concealer is my HG and very good stuff 🙂

      • Bonnie

I guess I might have to go w/ Bobbi Brown because there is no Neiman Marcus around Grand Rapids! Does Macy’s carry either brand that you know of? Tx for you input!

          • Bonnie

Wow – ur fast! Do you have a suggestion on the color – if I’m a bit whiter than olive skinned in the winter-time? Beige, ivory, or ocher?

          • the Muse

mmm I don’t for your skin tone Bonnie….I tend to do lighter shades than my own medium fair but I’m not good at rec’ing colors 🙁 check MUA???

  • Bonnie

I bought the Bobbi Brown concealer and love it! Tx for the great review. Now I’m thinking of changing what I use as my foundation, which is powder. It’s from Christina Products – Perfect Pigment. Have you heard of it? I am wondering what are your favs for foundation? Do you recommend powder? Can you give me some suggestions?

I am adding a comment here because I have TERRIBLE under-eye circles that age me more than anything else, and found that 2 things have worked…
    1) using a coral -colored cream blush UNDERNEATH a concealer like Becca Cosmetics or Make-up Forever works well….but also
    2) a friend who is a make-up artist suggested I try Smashbox’s High Definition Liquid Concealer and IT WORKS! this wonderful little tube cream works (at least for me), with minimum application and so far, its not needed any touch-up for 12 hours. AMAZING Cosmetics is a bit too greasy for me (I’m african-american/hispanic complextion share of Halle Berry).

No more do I have to pretend to be Bozo preparing for a show (something alot of concealers still force you to do).

Love your blog and keep on posting. We need the advice.

I am very fair-skinned, and am always the lightest shade possible in any foundation. I went to the counter to check out this concealer, and it seemed that even the lightest shade wasn’t light enough. Is this a regular complaint about this concealer? I really wanted to buy it based on reviews until I saw it in person. Should I try it anyway?

  • Ali

Do you think this concealer in Ivory would be suitable for someone who matches NARS Sheer Glow in Siberia, or would it be too dark?

    • the Muse

I’m not really familiar with Sheer Glow Siberia Ali so I’m not sure hun.

  • Kat

I have very fair skin and dark circles underneath my eyes. I use basic concealer which covers okay but never gives me that ”Flawless” look, I could never bring myself to spend more than $10 unless I was sure it would work good, what would you suggest?

  • Bárbara

Hi! I would like to know what is your shade in this concealer, and if you also have studio finish concealer, and what is your shade, so I could compare. I want to buy Cle de Peau concealer but can’t try it on, cause I live in Brazil, so I wanted to have some idea of which shade to get, since I use studio finish nw 25.
    Thank you!

It’s great to see your review on this Muse. I personally love this concealer as it is very creamy and has a gentle powder finish on me. It covers my under eye circles well and does a fantastic job on other issues. The price tag is EEEK! expensive but I’ve had a tube for about a year now and use it pretty much every day. I feel that I get my money’s worth, but yeah…..I believe that it’s pretty much the brand that people buy into. I haven’t broken down and purchased their Cle De Peau loose powder yet as it runs about $100 dollars. I love my original Coty Airspun (in the cardboard box) too much! I purchase them on eBay. For those of you wanting to buy this concealer definitely try it on before. Their color line has expanded, but not by much. It’s definitely a hit or miss product with some. For me personally it was definitely a hit. Expensive though, but I will buy more when I run out. 🙂 Love Bobbi Brown foundation stick as well.

    • Isabella Muse

i have to admit I’ve grown to love it too chase 😀 it’s very expensive but it really does provide excellent coverage in a great formula 😀 thanks for sharing your experience!
