Sephora Friends and Family 2009 Guide for Hauling: Should Haves, Must Haves, and Everything Else

Sephora Hauling 1

So you might be wondering, “What should I haul from the Sephora Friends and Family Event?”

Here’s a few details and suggestions of items I think are worthy of a look at during your spree’ing!

Check ’em after the jump!

Some rules of thumb when hauling are as follows:

Get It Now, It’ll Be Gone Later

I highly recommend, if you have the means and bucks, to get what you need now. Chances are it’ll sell out if it’s a hot commodity so don’t hesitate grab it while the grabbing is good. Normally I try to get things in three separate orders. One joy order where I get crazy with things I really want, one order for friends and family, and one order for items I need to stock up on. I always take my time with the last two when possible but the first one I normally dive right in with because in my experience once it sells out it’s difficult to come across until after the sale unless you’re lucky. For example, my bet is on the odds that the new Kat Von D Palette will probably be sold out by tomorrow, Wednesday at the latest. If you have the money to spare now definitely do your order so you aren’t crying over out of stock items later.

  • Haul Palettes Like It’s the End of Their Existence

If you don’t own a ton of makeup and you want to own a ton, my suggestion is get more for less. Palettes are the perfect way to haul a variety of colors and items (blushes, shadows, etc…) in one slick compact. Palettes are already marked down to size but subtract an additional 20% off the total cost and you end up with a killer deal. Here are some of my picks that I think are worthy of your virtual cart.

  • Stock Up On Gifts Sets, Get More for Less

Stocking up sets is always a good idea for a few reasons. Most sets are value priced plus the additional 20% off gets you an even deeper discount. The best part of gift sets is you get a slew of items to try out, many of which are even full size. On top of that if you aren’t loving one item out of say the 4 in the set you can swap it away, sell it off, or tuck it into a friend’s stocking for the Holiday. Perfect solution! Here are some sets I suggest getting.

Tarte Lip Gloss Set
Sephora Friends and Family 2009 127

Urban Decay 24/7 Super Stash
Sephora Friends and Family 2009 126

Urban Decay Hi-Fi 24/7 Set

Urban Decay Box of Potions
Sephora Friends and Family 2009 122

Bare Escentuals Rocker Eye Kit

  • Korres, A Religion All Itself.

Although I could probably include Korres with gift sets I think they are an entity all there self. They started out last year releasing a small little set here and there but this year they have gone into sets on a grand scale. I’m telling you this because the sets are HUGE discounts plus 20% off you’ll be scoring an even deeper discount. Here are a few of my favs to haul during Sephora Friends and Family.

Korres Natural Beauty Necessities
Korres Makeup 4

Korres Lip Saver Roll
Korres Makeup 3

Korres Cherry Lip Kisses
Korres Makeup 2

Korres Love Your Lips Collection
Korres Makeup 1

  • Brush Sets, Because We Don’t Have Enough Already.

If you already have brushes you may be in the same predicament as myself where you are seriously addicted to hauling more sets of brushes…I can’t be alone here right? For those that are using Q-Tips or sponge applicators for application now might be a good time to haul brushes that are prepackaged together in gift sets as they are super size values….plus as always, that 20% off, makes them all the more tempting. One worthy of a haul is the Sephora Perfect Ten Brush Set which pretty much has it all plus with the discount works out to a rather nice deal. This is only one good deal but there are MANY to be had so if you’re shopping a new brush kit definitely break things down to see what’s the best value.

If I missed something feel free to add it into the comment box where we can all read about it. I’m positive the list is incomplete and there are so many other wonderful things worthy of a haul but these were top on my mind this morning.

Can’t wait to hear all about your hauls.

I love this post! I found it really helpful to read what you would buy. I just placed an order for the Sephora favorites Glitz & Glam set and I can’t wait to try Guerlain Meteorites!

    • the Muse

hi acupa! awesome glad it helped hun! OMG that set is awesome. Had it in my cart twice but took it out to add something else! You’re gonna love Guerlain Meteorites 😀

  • Mandy

This is will be very helpful in the future when I get a job. LOL. I wish I could use this sale to buy stuff, even if it is just essentials. Do they have in-store sales like this? Ever? Can’t wait to see the things you purchased! 🙂 Happy shopping!!

    • the Muse

hi mandy! There is always next year hun! 🙂 they do it ever year! They do actually. Last year towards the end of Sephora FF they sent coupons via mail which was for one day or two days where you could go in and get 20% off…I can’t recall how it worked but it was in store at the time….actually believe it was 10% off but still that’s money saved 😀

Next year you’ll have a job and you’ll be telling me about everything you got 😀

  • Kaoru

Man, I hauled hard this year. Two Dior quints, a lipstick and a lipgloss, some Bliss stuff, a nailpolish (Mermaid), the large Clinique Moisture Surge, a couple solid perfumes, and a couple little things for people. I know that sounds like a lot, but I have been waiting to purchase some of those things for months. I like the new shipping option. I live on the West Coast, so $3 more for a little faster shipping is totally worth it (I had one order once take over 2 weeks. That was a bit much).

What did you haul this year so far? ^_^ (And man, did anyone else notice the slowdown last night at midnight? I already had my cart ready, but I had to wait until this morning to check out. Luckily, nothing I wanted sold out yet (which happened to me last year)).

    • the Muse

w00t nice kaoru jealous of your dior quints 😀 !!!!!!!! Sounds like a good haul to me 😀 2 weeks really?! damn!

I have a post above with my haul. So far one order down and two more plotting one of which will be for friends and fam! yes!!!!!! LOL everyone was filling their carts up like nobody’s bizz! 🙂

Last year I had a prob with sell out too 🙁

  • Adina

Thanks so much for your suggestions- they really helped…. I got the Kevin Aucoin SSE *based on your review* (as well as MUFE HD powder and the Dior holiday eyeshadow palette…….) I can’t wait for them to come. I hope the shipping won’t be slower than usual because of all the orders they’re getting.

    • the Muse

fantastic Adina. I think you’ll love it. It’s a really solid product! Let me know what you think when your order arrives. Good hauling on the MUFE and Dior hun! 😀 I don’t think so…in my experience they shipped fairly quickly during the FF event!

      Hugs!

  • Kat

Ok, now I’ve placed my second order in less than 12 hours. I’ve taken your advice and purchased a Kat Von D palette and the UD 24/7 Super Stash. I’ve never used UD before, but I’ve heard good reviews about using them on your waterline. (fingers crossed). To make things even better, my darling BF surprised me with a $50.00 GC from Sephora today! WOO HOO!!! (and he asks nicely if you can please stop enabling me or he’ll have to get our dog after you – who is a pug that will probably lick you to death 🙂 )

    • Kat

Hope you know I’m kidding about my pug. He couldn’t hurt a fly – unless food is involved – (my comment is still awaiting moderation and I was a bit worried) 🙂

      • the Muse

LOL Kat! OMG no I loved your comment hun! I was just reading it now 😀 I have about 185 comments to get through so it was taking me a while to reply hehehehe but def doing it now 😀 as for your pug I want to see a pic 😀 hehe! I have two of my own little devils!

    • the Muse

ha here we go kat 😀 <—me replying rather slowly 😀 good hauling! Which KVD palette did you get hun? I'm so pleased you got the UD SS you're going to love it. Your BF is a sweetie for enabling your shopping hehe!

Tell him I will TRY to stop enabling you to good makeup but I can't make any promises 😀 and I don't take your little pug licking me to death as a threat hehe I like dogs too much to mind 😀

Can 't wait to hear what you think after you get your goodies!
      Hugs!

      • Kat

Ok, I’m so bad. After my target purchase (yipppee) I was just browsing the web while eating my lunch. Silly me clicked on the Sephora site just to see if anything shipped or was OS. (my first order shipped!) I saw the Benefit Celebutante and fell in love….so there goes order #3.

Oh, I got the True Love KVD. As for the pug pic. I will email you one of his “ferocious” poses (my iphone is full of them) 🙂

        • the Muse

ha kat! I’m about to review that too!!!!!!!!! it’s rather cute! oooo yayayayaya can’t wait 😀 hehe! awesome on the true love it’s gorg!

          • Kat

I got my first haul. LOVE the Laura Luke palette. Going to actually make my first return to Sephora 🙁 not so fond of the Smashbox Eye Wish or the Laura Geller Face Folio. Stalking the UPS man for my next shipments. (I did warn him though)

          • the Muse

oh no kat first fatality hits! 😀 I’m not so sure on the Eye wish either….:P which is why I didn’t order. But glad you’re loving the LL palette. I just emailed you. Mookie is the cutezzzzz!

  • jojoba(My Make Up Reviews)

This is great!!! what an essential guide for shopping online when there is a crazy sale!

my vote goes to Kat Von D eye shadow palettes. I own all of them except the latest LE. One thing to remember is to avoid the LE ones with a CREAM e/s in as it dries up so fast that you can’t get the cream off the palette. Otherwise, the powder ones are FANTASTIC!

and the essential stuff like MUFE HD Foundation is something worth considering too.

girl, the best thing you did is to list price PER ITEM! it gives a scope how much we are paying EXACTLY.

    Hugs

    • the Muse

ha thanks jojoba! I agree the creams are MEH! :P!!!!!! I love love the powder ones 😀 and def great for essentials items like foundation, concealer, etc…!

aw thanks! glad it was helpful. btw I messaged you on MUA did you gt it!?

  • Crystal

    Hi Muse!
I have some questions that I would be totally happy if you answered. I have a very tight budget for Sephora F&F, and I’d appreciate if you could answer well. Thank you!

Tarte Treasure Chest, Smashbox WISH Eye Wish Palette, or Urban Decay Book of Shadows Vol 2? Choose one palette.

What about the Stila Smudge Pot Collection or the Korres Naturally Defined Eyes Collection?

Do you think the MUFE Aqua Eyes Collector Set is worth the high price?

Does Stila Kitten Eyeshadow make a good blend out color for medium golden skin tones?

For Guerlain Meteorites, do you think that shade Mythic 01 is a a good color for all over face powdering?

    Thank you for answering!

    • the Muse

Hi Crystal. Answering this on the road so bare with me if I make spelling errors hehe…hating typing on the iphone!

Tarte Treasure Chest=Very nice but boring if you got last year’s and the year’s before but yay if you never indulged as it’s ALOT of product for alot less. Great if you don’t own alot of makeup.
Urban Decay Book of Shadows 2: Big YAY if you love bolder shades of colors
Smashbox Eye Wish Palette=no, don’t bother.

Overall, go with TTC if you haven’t indulge before because as much as I love UDBS a few shades were a turn off for me slightly and TTC has SO much more to offer.

MUFE Aqua Eyes worth the high price yes absolutely however it’s ALOT of product. Ask yourself, “Do I use liner that much?” If yes get it, if not skip it. I know I personally don’t line my eyes alot so it’s a waste.

Kitten Eyeshadow big yes for medium golden skin tones and if you want to really blend out well go with the smudge pot version. However, it does apply frosty keep that in mind if you hate frost.

Guerlain Meteorites very nice if you have alot of money to fling around, Mystic 01 very nice for all over face powdering but if you’re on a tight budget maybe go with this http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P247394&categoryId=B70 <—-has a mini metorites.

go with the stila smudge pots b/c they double up as an eyeshadow or a base where as the pencil liners in the korres set do not. also take a look at the korres necessities (review and swatches are somewhere on the blog just search 🙂 if you really lem the liners as it contains two plus other great items http://www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P246907&categoryId=B70

I hope I got it all hehe. typing one handed and sushi with the other hehe 🙂

      • the Muse

ps if you go with the stila smudge pot kit you get kitten smudge pot included so you can skip on kitten powder shadow and get yourself somehting else Crystal!

        happy shopping hun

  • Crystal

    Thank you so much Muse!
I really appreciate and adore how helpful and comprehensive you are with your responses! Some blogs don’t even bother to respond! Thank you so much! My list is much narrower now…:)

    • the Muse

aww my pleasure crystal! Hope it helped you a little bit hun! It’s my pleasure truly! hugs!

  • lostcausefoundeffect

    stila cherry crush
    benefit hellow flawless
urban decay eyeshadow primer potion in sin
big beautiful eyes kit by benefit

i am like so messed up though i caught myself thinking in some twisted form of logic that i save more if i spend more….
trying to fix that so i don’t end up filing for like chapter 11 bankruptcy
yeah i dont even need to be marketed to
is there a makeup addiction support group?

    • the Muse

      haha lostcause 😀

awesome that kit is a fav of mine. love love cherry crush too and hello fawless 😀 awesome haul hun! I always think in these terms LOL you aren’t alone 😀 you are diseased but not alone LOL only kidding 😀 yes you’ve come to the right place for support…we support all your habits of buying lots of makeup LOL!

  • DonnaN

Love this post…..has made me get off me ‘arse and get going on my lists….and friends, those in my tiny circle KNOW how I LOVE to make lists……

In the meantime Ms. Muse, I’ve got couple of dilemas I need your *expert* opinion on.

First, I have a beauty crush on KVD products. I have alread bought the Beethoven eye palette, along with the Sephora Freebie quad (those BI points DO come in handy), and I can logically buy one other KVD palette during F & F. I have dark hair, fair skin (not quite SNOW WHITE) and Hazel eyes…..which other KVD palette would you pick?

Second, I need a GOOD mascara….preferably one that does not smudge (I try not to rub my eyes, but sometimes it cannot be avoided), run or flake. I’ve tried the following, all to my avail did NOT work…..BadGal, Imju Fiberwig and almost all of the Clinique formulas. I’ve been searching your blog looking for the best recommendations, and have narrowed the choices to:

    Givency Phenomen’ Eyes Effet
    Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes!
    Bare Escentuals Buxom Lash

Should I pick one of these three, or am I missing the “one”?

Thanks for any advise…….now back to my “lists”…….

    KVD Me

  • Jin

Thanks for taking the time to create this post! I love the how you put how much each item in the set costs … when you look at it that way, it doesn’t make you feel so guilty XD

  • Terri

Ugh, this is making me soooo sad….no FF sale in Canada…sigh…I’ll have to live vicariously through your purchases!

  • Janet

What a wonderful guide. Thank you for thinking of this. I actually just ordered a Clarisonic Mia, but Ive still got time to make more orders. =)

    • the Muse

      hi janet

my pleasure! glad you think it’s helpful 😀 good hauling on the Mia! Enjoy hun! Stop back let us know about your second haul 😀

  • Laura

I’ve been looking for a good greys and neutral browns palettes – that aren’t hyper sparkly (I have both Urban Decay and Too Faced, but they are way too sparkly for my age/office 🙁

If you know of one let me know! My eyes have been looking at Coastal Scents lately

    • the Muse

eep laura I’m bad with neutral browns and greys…one thin I do like in regards to browns in the baked duo from Laura Geller…I have review/swatches some where. That’s a rich chocolately brown, very nice. 😀

  • Dina

do me a fav and stop back tell me how that candle is… wanted it but candles tend not to scent alot for me so I end up going the tart route 🙂

  • Lisa

I never got an email from Sephora about their FF sale and I am a V.I.B. member. WTH?! When is it going on, what is the code, etc.! Please help!

  • Lisa

Thank you so much! It’s not like I reeeally need to buy anything, but I just might if I can’t stop myself. 😛

  • Andrea

Hi, Muse! I love this time of the year!! I already bought Philosophy Best of Sephora Set, Tarte lipgloss, Benefit Eye Bright, Benefit Eyebrow pencil, Urban Decay Volume 2, Nars lipstick, Nars cream eye shadow, and Buxom lip gloss. Yeh, haul!

The Sephora Moroccan palette looks pretty, but I usually don’t like Sephora products. Do you think it would be worth the price? I need a good palette, and I want the Dior Holiday or new Laura Mercier…but I want a good pink color. What do you think?

    Thanks, Andrea

    • the Muse

me too andrea! Christmas in October 😀 Nice hauling hun! You’re gonna love BoS2! 😀 I liked it very much, I have a review up check it out might be helpful! I think with the discount off it’s a super palette! it’s not dior or LM 😀 but it’s nice! what sort of pinks are you looking at? deep, warm? bright, bubbly?

  • Jordann

Thanks for the guide; super helpful! I spent the week prior to the sale obsessing over what to put in my cart –adding and removing items like crazy. Finally decided on: Makeup Forever HD Kit, Nars Blush in Amour and Luster, Nars All About Eve e/s duo, Nars Galapagos e/s, and Illamasqua sheer lip gloss in enchant.

Those were for me, now I think I’ll take your advice and get some christmas gifts with a second order! *Cheers*

    • the Muse

my pleasure Jordann! looks like a nice haul you got there lovie! Especially the nars goodies! Def haul for xmas 😀 It’s a good time to save cash on gifts. I just placed my Christmas order saved $100!

      happy shopping!

  • Fresco Phyrra

Ok, so I ordered Too Faced Shadow Insurance, since this is a staple for me. I ordered the Stila Lip glaze mini trio as a gift, and I ordered the Clarisonic Mia in pink. I also got a 100 point perk, Philosophy Purity Made Simple.

I’m hoping that I like the Clarisonic. The reason I chose the Mia is that it’s pink and it comes with the sensitive skin brush head.

    • the Muse

I like the Pink Clarisonic too DD 😀 good hauling hun btw the purity is a great pair up with your new Mia. I look forward to hearing what you think of the brush, I’m not a fan and always curious what others think!
