Beauty on a Budget: L’Oreal HIP Matte Shadow Duo

L'Oreal HIP Matte Shadow Duo 3

The Muse wants to know, are there really people out there that work in mattes? If so, I want you to know I admire you so bloody much. Matte is probably one of thee most difficult mediums I’ve had the pleasure of working with. I’m no expert at makeup application but I do think that shimmers, pearls, creams, etc…are way easier to blend and work with when compared to mattes. Mattes are the work of the devil as far as this Muse is concerned.

However, if matte is your bag you’ll adore the fact that L’Oreal HIP now has a range of shadow duos that are matte in formula and highly pigmented.

Jump for it.

Available in five shade selections the new L’Oreal HIP Matte Shadow Duos will set you back $6.99-$7.99 in drugstores. Hey, save money while getting your matte vibe on, coolness right?

Although extremely difficult to blend (hello, how many mattes do you know that blend well?) these are richly pigmented. Each shadow contains two shades with a nifty little applicator tucked into a separate compartment on the bottom of the compact.

  • Animated (Bright Blue and White)
  • Poppy (Orange and Brown)
  • Perky (Green and Navy Blue)
  • Dashing (Dusky Rose and Black)
  • Striking (Yellow and Black)

The colors are all pretty vibrant so if you’re a lover of both matte and brighter shades these should fit your style bill. Overall, with their budget price tag and pigmented formula they should be a joyful addition to any matte lovers makeup case.

As for this Muse she stays far from the mattes, they are evil. However, I have taken to wetting these and using them as a liner. Beauty improvise, it’s a good thing.

Available now at drugstores.

Anyone a matte fan?

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. I have long preferred matte to shiny/shimmery/glittery/pearl shades for the soft, natural look they provide. My three favorites are all MAC: Samoa Silk (peach), Saddle (ruddy medium brown), and Soft Brown (duh).

Most companies offer an extremely limited selection of matte colors, so I’m trying to be excited about L’Oreal’s new mattes, but they aren’t very pretty. They’re actually kinda weird.

    • the Muse

hey chelsea. I admire you as I really don’t know how to apply mattes at all without looking like I have a bruised eye 😀 You’re right the matte world is kinda small 🙁 I think these are quite fun and vibrant but did feel they weren’t so friendly color wise…as much as I love popping shades of color the duos do look a tad weird in the pairs they did select. They probably should have done some work friendly shades however the line is more of a “hipper” line so I imagine they want to snag the attention of teens and twenty-somethings.

Actually I’ve been using mattes ever since I tried makeup. For a long time I had only mattes, so I can say, I learned using them. Cream textures are the Devil itself in my book. Hate them. I had very few pearly shades, and am getting into shimmery ones these last years thanks to opening my eyes up to Japanese brands LOL. It’s so weird they blend almost effortlessly >.<

    • the Muse

hey mary! I’ve never been successful with mattes, i always screwn up my look with ’em 😀 haha I always felt the same with creams but I tried a few that were awesome and ended up loving ’em 🙂 oh hells Japanese brands def do NOT make any mattes hahaha!

      • mary_in_wonder

That’s true many of them are crap and doesn’t have the color payoff we want, but they are great for everyday looks^

I’m waiting for the day when they do come out with some mattes. Must have!^^

        • the Muse

mary you mean cream shadows? Have you tried the Visee Aqua Shining Eyes? Those are fab creams 🙂

  • Fresco Phyrra

I’m not really a matte fan, though I’m starting to like them more thanks to mineral makeup. Aromaleigh and Fyrinnae have some REALLY nice, easy to work with mattes. I’m finding that I really like mixing up textures, with maybe a matte on the lid, a sparkly color in the crease and a light shimmer on the browbone.

    • the Muse

hey dd! ha news to me I always thought those were really shimmery cool to hear they have mattes 😀 I don’t mind mattes so much if I can use it as a base with a bit of shimmer on top, that I can def work 🙂

  • Marloes

    *stands up*

My name is Marloes and I’m a matte-lovah.

    *sits down*

Although I sometimes use some pearls with my mattes. Daring huh?

And I want to get my matte vibe on, because mattes are hard to find, but… I agree with Chelsea, they’re weird combos. The pink/black one, maybe… but meh. I’ve got the 88 matte palette, so why would I want more yellow, orange and green?

    • the Muse

lol marloes please teach a poor little jedi the wonders of matte. seriously I haven’t an idea how to blend them without looking like someone punched me in the eye 😀

combos are totally weird agree…I think they went with a little edge as it’s supposed to be “hip” but in the end it just looks strange.

  • Zoffe

I truly love matte shadows! 🙂
I don’t do completely matte looks very often, but I pretty much always have a matte shadow in my crease, and often more than that 🙂
I might be alone, but I really like the look of these. The color combos may be a bit “weird” but I guess that’s what I like about these. It challenges you to try color combinations you wouldn’t have thought of on your own. It’s too bad I can’t get them here in Denmark 😉

    • the Muse

      hi zoffe!

awesome, I always admire anyone who can pull off mattes 😀 That’s very true, the color combos are challenging to create new looks with!

aw 🙁 maybe try out e-bay hun!?

  • maria

    hey muse
i use mattes all the time, even tho i was at first scared of them because of their reputation *lol* but yaby cosmetics do amazing easy blendable and high-pigmented matte e/s and i can only recommend them! give them a try if you can 😀

    xxxx

    • the Muse

omg maria I want everything from yaby! haha 😀 they make such nice stuff 😀 I have a palette in my cart just biding my time to get it 😀

      thanks for the rec dear!

  • Isabella Bowie

Well I don’t usually wear eyeshadow at all as it makes my eyes look horribly tired and tends to underline dark circles. I can’t live without my Fluidline in Black Track *yay*
I’ve rarely used eyeshadows but mattes are definitely my favourites – shimmers and pearls give me that ’80 disco look I simply can’t stand. But Jesus Christ, these colours are *AWFUL*. Yellow and black, oh no. Who can wear them together *rolls eyes*

They are not sold in Italy anyway. :/ We have different colours and collections, unfortunately. Most of the times our choice is drastically reduced. 🙁

    • the Muse

hi Isabella 😀 lol I fear I’m guilty of doing the disco look alot particularly b/c of fall out 😛

haha! I THINK they expected the black to make a great liner and it really does but the yellow as well is a bit too too much. awww that stinks but you have your pick of some lush luxury lines I’m sure!

  • Melissa

I come and go with mattes. I tend to get more compliments when I do my usual bold eye colors with pearl or shimmer. I like a smokey-ish matte eye. I was taught to do this with firmer brushes and press the color on the lid like you might with a piggie. Stippling for the crease or accent colors and no blending. I agree blending tends to give an ashy gray kind of bruised look on me regardless of the actual matte color. I might try the funky duos when there is a good cvs sale and coupon. I’m extremely cheap when it comes to cheap makeup. 🙂

  • Nicole (Dolce Beauty)

Very cool. This makes me think of all those MUFE mattes I always breeze by at Sephora… so vibrant yet I just can’t see spending the $$$ for something I know I’ll never use. But, a drugstore fine, now that’s more my speed.

    Thanks Muse!

my major make-up pet peeve nowadays is glitter/shimmer in general; esp even when i’ve tried so-called ‘subtle’ highlighting product like Becca PSP or KA Candlelight. when i step outside and my face is covered in it. sorta blows my ‘all, natural, i’m not wearing any make-up’ cover.
funnily enough the best, most natural looking glow i’ve gotten was by blotting Kleenex moisturizing tissues, all over my face. cheap and easy.
i applaud the Loreal for coming out with these Matte HIP shadows but i don’t roll out of bed with bright green or bright yellow on my lids. i get the impression these are pigmented so i’d pass. Revlon matte in aubergine works pretty well, tho it’s slightly ash so sometimes a bit of more reddish MAC Matte2 Fig 1 helps. but day to day i skip eyeshadow because it’s usually too shimmery, not pigmented or pigmented but not a natural skin-like shade.
i think 10, 15 years shimmer in make up products wasn’t so prevalent or at least there were waaaay more matte options. i guess my major complaint isn’t shimmer itself; just the intensity and obviousness.
