Maybelline Eye Studio Eye Shadow Duo Review and Swatches

‘ello, ‘ello!

By now I’m sure you seen the deets about the new Maybelline Eye Studio Collection over on Christine’s site.

This is break through makeup peeps or is for me anyway. Drugstore makeup is somehow making an evolution lately and perhaps trying to catch up with the Asian market. This collection for me is a landmark because it’s different, unique, quite interesting from anything I’ve seen in the US market.

Maybelline Eye Studio consists of new shadows, mascara, and gel liners…impressive right?

I picked up two Maybelline Eye Studio Baked Marbleized Shadow Duos and I must say I’m leaning towards liking ’em!

Maybelline Eye Studio Eye Shadows 4

Check it after the jump!

I believe they released about 8 shadows of these duos but showing some willpower I only hauled three and ended up keeping two as one color seemed dull after I got it home.

Anyone who loves MAC Marbleized Shadows will likely want to get on board with these. The presentation alone makes me gag with excitement as they are quite pretty to behold. Split down the middle, baked, and made up of two shades in a swirled marble design I’m sure there isn’t any question you’ll want to haul after seeing them.

They are $6.99 each which is a pretty nice price for the quality. And yes, the quality is there. They are pigmented, they have a good silky formula that blends easily, and a subtle kiss of shimmer should make them universally appealing to the masses of makeup junkies out there like myself.

Few minor rants….

I ended up keeping Bronze Blowout and Ivy Icon. First off Ivy Icon is all about me as I love green on my big, buggy brown eyes however bit rant-y that the shades swatch contrasting on my arm but not on my eye. You’ll get a lighter forest green and a golden olive green which is darker…however….applied I can’t get them to contrast properly as they run together as one shade. Ho-hum kinda disappointed with that. Bronze Blowout is made of golden glowing gold that has a hint of peach and a bronze-y brown. Now this one I didn’t like because it made my eyes look a bit tired….mmm….loved the gold shade but the brown wasn’t flattering at all but that’s by no means a fault with the product.

Although I think the quality is incredible the shadows do prove a little bit too silky formula wise. This basically means when you use a single shade on the lid and go to contrast in the crease you’ll end up dusting off most of what’s on you’re lid as you blend into your crease…does that make sense? Simple terms, the shadow slips and slides off your eye pretty quickly because of it’s silky texture, kinda dusts right off. I guess this isn’t a problem as you can simply go back and re-add color but I do like shadow to stick around where I put it to begin with. Some minor creasing did occur even with proper prepping and priming using my trusty UDPP, just be sure to really prep it up prior to application.

Aside from my minor rants I’m impressed with the shadows. As I mentioned above I feel like it’s a real landmark for US drugstores to carry such a unique shadow and not the standard boring, cheap items we normally get. If more products like this pop onto the market you can count the Muse a drugstore convert…well…let’s not go too far. On that note I’ll leave you with a little whisper about the Maybelline Eye Studio Plush Silk Eyeshadow Quads, I’ll be reviewing soon…now these might be a love!

Anyone haul any of these shadows yet?

See the display at your local drugstore?

Do share the good word!

It really has come a long way, hasn’t it? I saw these neat Revlon baked blusher-type things the other day. I didn’t get them since I have enough MSFs, but I was really surprised. And these look mighty tempting too.

Another surprise was the Prestige Intense liners and the HIP Chrome ones. There’s a Chrome color that is almost an exact dupe for UD’s 24/7 in Honey, both in texture and color. 😀

    • the Muse

oh yes taryn I seen those too! ha MSF dupe! It’s evoling that’s for sure!!!!!!!!! The chrome ones are fab 😀 I got all the shades, LOVE!

  • Sheila

That totally reminds me of MAC Mineralize Eyeshadows. Tons of fallout and shimmery…

  • Kathie

I thought the brown & gold tones were so flattering! I must get this product soon! Muse, you have the more prettiest eyes ever and I’m not just saying that!! 😀

    • the Muse

Thanks Kathie you’re lovely 😀 *hugs*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I liked the gold but I fear the brown made me a little tired lookin’ 🙂

  • Hailee

Wow it’s like the Laura heller I’ve been wanting!! Sephora
keeps being out of stock so I’ll prob have to go with these. That’s what you get, sephora!!

Oh btw, you should do a tutorial!! Like “blending into the crease” and all that. Yea haha

    • the Muse

true hailee! heller like it! LOL head to qvc, massive deals on sets 😀

gosh I wouldn’t know where to start I suck at makeup application 🙂

  • Dina

agreed, so exciting to see some new things w/ drugstore brands, really wanting a harmon/walmart (i know, i know but i do love it) visit soon. any word on the covergirl smoky shadow blast things? also on the growing list . . .
    ;O)

    • the Muse

me too dina and that’s saying ALOT 😀 LOL evil empire! ha! 🙂
      I adore harmon myself.

actually I didn’t bother with those they looked uneventful so did the sparkle gloss…didn’t you think?

      • Dina

definitely uneventful gloss, not even a second look. the shadow stick things probably sucking me in because its trying to convinces me i can line my eyes properly and like a normal functioning human being b/c i feel like a total dunce in my attempts . . . .yay marketing. if there’s a super exciting color combo and seems non-creamy enough might give it a go but thank you for having me think twice to reallocate my nonexistent beauty budget elsewhere! 🙂

  • rochness

i don’t think we have this yet in singapore, but thanks to you (evil! =P ) i’m hoping they sell it here soon.

(i really should stop going to this blog, it has tempted me to do many evil things. hahaha)

    happy new year, muse! =)

    • the Muse

hi rochness LOL sorries 😀 I hope you guys get it soon! I know the quads are available in m’asia so perhaps ‘pore too! those are WAY cool!

      LOL! hehe evil Muse ;-D

      Happy New Year doll!

  • Katherine

Muse, dahhhling, both colors look fabulous on you! I’m intrigued by these eyeshadows–they look gorgeous in the packaging, and on you… but my experience with baked shadows has just been okay (my three Hard Candy baked duos swatch well but don’t apply well with a brush and don’t look as true to the pan as they should).

    • the Muse

awww thanks Katherine 😀 Mmm totally understand, baked isn’t for everyone 😀 oh those suck no offense, I tried one and was quite disappointed le sigh so def don’t judge baked on those alone 🙂

  • Ciambella

What the…I saw those eyeshadow palettes in the promo picture at a local tourist-targeted store and thought they were Japanese Maybelline products (we have a lot of Japanese tourists where I live)! I thought they were just way too pretty to be American Maybelline…maybe I was wrong. I think those palettes were priced at around $12-$14 or so, which was pricey to me for a Maybelline, and also why I thought they were Japanese imports. Hope they turn out awesome come spring; they LOOK gorgeous. Wouldn’t it be great if they had the quality of Majolica Majorca or Kate eyeshadows?

  • steelnpurple

I’m getting more and more impressed by Maybelline (and other drugstore brands) day by day almost! They are truly pumping it up a notch!
I love duos and trios and quads, so practical! I will keep an eye out for these.. the brown/gold one caught my attention since I’m a neutral girl. 😀

    • the Muse

*nods eagerly* pretty shocking isn’t it Steel? The quads are absurdly nice, nicer than the duos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve somehow turned into a neutral girl too lately 🙂

  • Nia

I wonder if the make it over the pond to Europe. A lot of the L’Oreal stuff does not, so we will see. The green one looks gorgeous with your eyes, love it 🙂

    • the Muse

I dunno sure hope so Nia! L’Oreal Pro Line was out in UK prior to releasing in UK so hopefully these will make it too!!!!!!!!! 🙂

      Aw thanks!

  • Marsha

I love shimmer, so these are perfect for me. They look gorgeous especially on you.

    • the Muse

aw shucks thanks Marsha you’re too kind, I think you’ll like these, they are truly nice!

  • Paloma

Hey hick, are you updating on the 12 days of giveaways today? Just wondering 😡

    • the Muse

no I’m not Paloma, trying to get things ready for a party and at the supermarket at the moment. I have about 500 comments to approve which I’m slowly doing as I stand in line right now so it’s hard to update the giveaway while approving entries that are still coming in. All of them need to be assigned a number and entered into my spreadsheet. winners will prob be the middle of next week as with the Holiday I know I won’t get to it.

      Happy (almost) New Year!

  • Penny

I must say, I really like your blog. Love your writing style and your BB cream reviews

    • the Muse

awww thanks Penny you’re lovely 🙂 stick around and chat with us all some 😀 Hope we talk again soon!

  • Josh

I know Walgreens is having an event with the Eye Studio Products on January 16th from 10-5 in each store. Sales, coupons, and testers. Sounds like the place to be for me.

I want one of the Eye Studio quads sooooo bad!

    • the Muse

oh coolness Josh thanks for the heads up! 😀 the quads=GORG!!!!!! Review coming atcha soon!

  • Rhon228

Okay, I saw these when I saw the HIP Studio ones but I opted to go with HIP b/c that’s what I know. I’m kicking myself and praying that I am able to get them still. Can’t wait until tomorrow to see if anything is open and if they are having a sale. Wish me luck.

        • Rhon228

Wrong thread! I am waiting to get these for a BOGO day. I visit Walgreens and CVS weekly to check out the sales and products. I love the goldtones in the green and brown ones. I think I’m trying to procure them all! Help, I’m going to need a case for just my eyeshadows.

          • the Muse

haha rhon know the feeling well when it comes to shadows. :-D!

          • Rhon228

I have three of these and am loving it! I have the Sinfully Sinnamon, Lawless Lavender and Ivy Icon. I am waiting on Saturday to head to Walgreen’s and see if I get some kind of deal for the quads.

          • the Muse

rhon the quads are GORGEOUS! playing around with them the last few days 😀 these are quite nice too but I love the quads!

          • Rhon228

Alrighty, Mates. Yesterday, I went to Walgreen’s and they had their b1g1 half off. They also had $1 coupons to go along with their special and you could use a coupon for each one. Well, along with the one I got from CVS earlier and the other 3 I got from them they other day my count is now up to 8 (I got four for $18 with the coupons). Hopefully this will curb my appetite for shadows for a while as my case is getting full.:) I tried each and everyone on and I love them all.

          • the Muse

yay rhon AWESOME hauling dude. Did you get the quads as well?! They are rocking!

  • e.k.

I bought the green for my mom … but ended up keeping it for myself because i loved it too much! (I ended up buying her another). It did crease a bit, but I found that even with a regular face primer that didn’t happen (mostly because the UDPP is still a little out of my price range).

    • the Muse

LOL EK! I can understand the feeling, it’s pretty right? Same here, it seems to be extra silky formula wise. ahhh maybe grab some UDPP when they have 30% off during friends and family 🙂 it’s great stuff to have!

  • Tammy

I’m going to try these next. I really like the new quad eyeshadows that maybelline came out with, they remind me of the asian eyeshadows.

    • the Muse

oh tammy very much so! They formula and everything, utterly asian 😀

Have a review coming shortly of ’em!

  • brandon

i think dsrugtore brands are really stepping up their game! I just got two of the Shadowblast single eyeshadows from Covergirl ( Brown Smolder anf Indigo Impact). And i must say i was VERY impressed. Especailly at 4 bucks a pop!

    • the Muse

couldn’t agree more brandon! It’s about damn time. I haven’t tried the CG shadowblast I was a bit meh on them but they are really turning out to be killer according to reviews. If you’re liking ’em maybe I’ll indulge 🙂

      • brandon

They are killer. But note, i am not talking about those new double ended creme eyeshadow pens CG jut came out with, im talking about the single eyeshadows. Those were a little Meh IMO

        • the Muse

hey brandon sorry for the delayed reply love!

Ooooo I know what you mean! I thought you meant the double ended cream ones! have to try these!

  • rhon228

I did grab one of the quads and I am plotting my next plan of attack to get them all on a budget! I grabbed some extra coupons from walgreens and they expire 1/31/2010 so I be getting them before then.

H ave you tried the Shine Sensational glosses yet? They were in the brocure Maybeline gave out Saturday.

  • sTEPHANIE

If you can use them wet I’ll try one. I love this whole baked eyeshadow/Laura Geller thing.
I want to try those new Mab. gel liner pots with the little brush!
