Lumene Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover Review

Ok, story time.

Is it me or do you find it utterly irritating when eye makeup remover is dubbed as being for eyes and lips? That’s a total pet peeve of mine. Seriously, how many people are sporting lippies that are so bulletproof you need to remove that crap with eye makeup remover. “Hi honey I’m home can you pass the eye make remover so I can remove my lipstick? k, thanks! Let’s have dinner!”

Just for the record I’ve never found myself wiping down my lips with a cotton pad saturated in eye makeup remover and I probably never will. I understand the mentality of it and that on occasion people are sporting some sort of lipstick that perhaps…kinda…sorta…may need to be removed with something stronger than a mere tissue but honestly 1. my lipstick doesn’t even MAKE it to the end of the day so I do not need a liquid remover for it and 2. If it’s still hanging around I simply wipe it off with a tissue.

Anyone with me?

But anyway, ’nuff ranting from me. That rant was brought to you by my current review actually, Lumene Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover (for eyes and grrrrrrrrrr lips).

Check it after the jump!

I admit I’ve been creeping around the CVS aisles and staring down Lumene and guess what? Lumene has been winning. The brand intrigues me as of late and I’m always looking for the next thing I want to review so why not stick up a few babblings about Lumene right?

Actually…

I ran out of Sephora Eye Make Up Remover and I have a really awesome friend and reader grabbing me some remover from Skin Food but until that arrives from Korea I hot footed it over to CVS to grab some eye make up remover. My game plan was just to get something quickly because I was in dire need and my schedule is packed up the nines so I can’t go to Sephora at the moment. You see if I go to Sephora it’s not like I can go in, grab the remover, and leave. Sephora is an all day project…you know what I mean I’m sure.

Anyway. Normally hate drugstore removers but I was just deseperate for something to last me over the next two days until I did have a sec to get to Sephora so I ended up picking up Lumene Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover because I remember my dear friend and reader, Mandy, rec’ing it.

So what do I think?

It’s alright.

It’s a dual phase remover and runs on the cheaper scale of things at $6.49 for 3.4 oz. L’Oreal, the only other somewhat decent remover in the store, runs around $8 and change.

For me this is the kind of remover where I think to myself, golly I sure am glad I’m following up with an oil cleanser after this. It removes shadow and mascara well enough but I never get that fully clean filling which makes me feel relieved when I hit the oil cleanser because I know the left over bits will be cleaned away thankfully.

Sadly, this doesn’t do the full job for me particularly because I have to use a heavily saturated cotton pad to get even half of my makeup off and on top of that I’m still left with bits of mascara. Decently priced and good for anyone who doesn’t use a ton of eye makeup I’d say but anyone who sports multiply layers of mascara and pigmented eye shadow probably could do better in the realms of eye makeup remover.

Hey the “old fashioned” line of Olay, the one with original beauty fluid, has an eye make up remover it leans toward the creamy side and is slightly cooling for when I’m out of my favorite (lush ultra bland) I go for the Olay. It gets the job done fine for about $7-$8. Its probably too late now but keep it in mind for the next “remover emergency”. Also, I found I very much like the Missha oil cleanser as an eye make up remover. To avoid the blurry eye effect, I apply it with my fingers on dry/made up eyes, wipe with a cotton pad, then rinse and/or use it on my face. I think that when my sample is gone I will buy it as alternative to Lush. It smells lovely too.

To be honest I’ve never seen an eye AND lip remover! Shows how much I pay attention.

But yes, I can totally relate to your rant. One of the reasons I don’t use lipsticks often is because I can’t find one that is long lasting enough for my tastes. They all seem to wear off too soon so I just stick with glosses because they’re less of a hassle to reapply and less noticeable when they do come off.

    • the Muse

chung! NO! seriously? What do you remove eye makeup with hun? oil cleanser?

Mm same here hun I eat them off as the day progresses! haha! I like stains and such those last way longer and a little gloss on top!!!!!!

      Hugs! Happy Weekend!

      • Chung

Haha! Yeah, I usually use a bi phase makeup remover for eyes. I find they clean way better than ones with no oil. I’m going to buy a Kose cleansing oil to try soon though 🙂

Yes!! Lip stains are great! Love them too.

        • the Muse

bi phase is the way to go chung! 😀 they work great!!!!!!!!! is that the pink one you mean!? I really wanna try that!

          God yes lipstains=LOVE

  • Marina

Right now I am using 2 makeup Remover : Bi-Facil (no comments and this one) and the other one is Sensitive Touch by Lumene and I like it!

  • suz

hahah you are so right about lip thing!!!

I rarely use makeup remover for my eyes…I just use my shu uemura cleansing oil..splatter it all over my face..close eyes and rub away. Doesn’t sting my eye and my eye is sensitive if I rub with makeup removers so I run away from makeup removers, as much as I can.

    • the Muse

lol suz. I swear I never use eye makeup remover on my lips! I tried it once with the Etude House eye and lip remover and oh my god it’s so gross tasting, tastes like grandma perfume LOL I normally use oil cleansing as well but prior to that I remove all my eye makeup with eye makeup remover 😀

  • Sami

I, for one, use Makeup Remover on my lips on a regular occasion! Its not exclusively for removing your makeup at the end of the day. What about applying a lipstick then deciding its not the right one for the day? Using a tissue A) irritates my lips because of the necessary friction and B) doesn’t always remove the product completely (especially if it is a darker color).
I really like a lot of reviews on your blog, but I HATE how much you condemn anything you don’t do. Just because its not your cup of tea doesn’t mean you need to look down on everyone else.

    • the Muse

hi sami it’s just makeup hun. I’m not condemning anyone or anything you do. However, you choose to use your makeup or remove it etc is awesome. I’m merely injecting a little humor into my posts and explaining my pet peeve about makeup removal being for lips and eyes. I personally don’t use it on lips, kinda tastes gross to me and just don’t see the point but if you do awesome. No one is condemning you for it. If it works for you, do it! 🙂

  • Christine

    Hi Muse!

Have you tried the Neutrogena eye makeup remover? I find that it works really well for me – may be a better alternative to Lumene next time! I totally LOL’d when I read your description about putting eye makeup remover on your lips – it’s so true!

    • the Muse

yup christine and sadly no likes! oh lord thank god someone agrees lol! I never use it on my lips! ha!

  • Margaret

    :::cries:::

Oh, Muse, this is like my Most Favoritest Makeup Remover Evah. I love it because it’s pretty much as effective as Lancome’s Bi-Facile for like NO MONEY. I’m sorry you don’t like it as much as I do, but maybe I don’t wear as much makeup on my eyes. I don’t wear eyeliner because it makes me look like an aged crack whore. (Did I just say that?)

    • the Muse

LOL margeret I think you just said that LMAO

It works great removing my shadow but no good for my mascara. I still have quite alot on my eyes after using grrrrr! but nothing cleansing oil doesn’t get rid of completely 😀 which is good!

  • Marcy

    Hi Muse ^.^
I actually do occasionally use eye m/u remover on my lips… (a bit sheepish about it now!) but it always tastes weird and I end up regretting doing it. The need occasionally arises if I use a very deep red lipstick and feel it’s not coming off even after eating, wiping with tissue, etc etc…. but yeah, maybe like flavoured lipbalms companies can make remover taste better too LOL!

    • the Muse

hey marcy sorry for the delayed reply! ugh I never do doll b/c of the weird taste/greasy finish! 😀 makes sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I never really wear reds and my gloss is eaten off before I get home haha so I never really much use to remove lippie stuff 😀 but makes sense! aw heck yes that would be great like a watermelon flavor or something 🙂

  • Julie

My experience has been the opposite of what you describe. This has been my HG eyemakeup remover for years!

  • Bakeneko

It drives me crazy that no eye make-up remover ever removes all of my mascara, no matter how much I use of it! I only wear one coat! Grrrr haha

I use Floracil by Gatineau because it is the only eye make-up remover I have ever used that doesn’t irritate my eyes. It is so soothing that I actually use it as a compress if I have sore eyes.

    • the Muse

same here bakeneko, same here. I always follow up with cleansing oil which gets it all off 😀 I never tried that will have to look around for it, never heard of it actually 😀

      • Bakeneko

Oooh I didn’t think of that – I’m always scared to use oil near my eyes in case it makes them puffy…

        • the Muse

owwww no probs with that hear bakeneko swear my skin and such is a bulletproof. Not sensitive to anything really 😀

          • Bakeneko

I think I might just give that a go. It irritates me no end to wake up with panda eyes every morning!

          • the Muse

oh good that’s not good bakeneko 😀 I hate that!

  • Mary

Is this a different formula? I noticed u had two reviews, and you seemed to like the newer one better…

    • the Muse

i actually tried the old one I tossed in the makeup graveyard and hated it ;-D compared it to the new one I recently purchased and found the new one removed more eye makeup!? nothing has changed though formula wise?! maybe I’m nuts?!
