Urban Decay StarDust Eyeshadow Review, Swatches, Photos, and FOTD

Anyone excited about the Urban Decay Stardust Eyeshadows? Anyone haul any yet?

The brand new Urban Decay Stardust Eyeshadow boast a whopping 40% more glitter than the regular line of shadows offered by UD but the difference is these guys promise to deliver the sparkle minus the fall out.

Does it work?

Check it after the jump!

If you’re a great lover of sparkle finishes the Urban Decay Stardust Eyeshadows should appeal. These have a beautiful shimmery finish that can be worn subtly or built up in intensity for a popping display of glittery gorgeous.

The glitter used in the shadows is a pricey ingredient called reflex. I haven’t a clue what reflect is but it’s supposed to stay on your lids minus fallout and chunky glitter. Compared to some of Urban Decay’s glittery shadows that is the case indeed however you may experience a little fall out during application but not chunky pieces of glitter as the glitter in these shadows is very tiny and fine. At first view I thought they might sport the same formula as Bobbi Brown Sparkle Eye Shadow but on close inspection and testing the shadows are vastly different. The Urban Decay formula has a fine glitter content, the formula is silky, not flaky. One of the problems with the regular shadows in the catalog would be some are flaky which in turn causes fall out woes. For me the formula is considerably different and thinner in consistency compared to the normal range which results in 99% less fall out! Yay!

Few notes on pigmentation….

The shadows are buildable but you do have to understand the best way to use them to get good color pay off. In order to achieve the best results with pigmentation and fall out, my suggestion is avoid using brushes. Brushes won’t work well during application with these and you won’t be able to pick up color as well as you would with a sponge applicator. Sponge applicators really pick up color and pack it on the lid. Granted, if you prefer a lighter application by all means use a brush but if you want good color pay off go with a sponge. Also I find fingering it on also works great to pack color on and blend it beautifully well. And finally applying wet will create a foiled effect and make the shadows look incredibly vibrant.

I know a few people weren’t thrilled with the packaging on these but after playing around with them a bit I’m sold. They are surrounded by this funky black frame and a clear plastic to cover the shadow. To open the shadow you press on either side of the black frame and the lid flips up and open. I’m like a big kid and was completely thrilled how they open, so of course I sat around for 20 minutes flipping them open and closed and even made a video so you can see how they work!

The shadows are available in nine shades. Some shades are similar to other UD colors in the general catalog but the formula is different so they may be worthy of a haul regardless.

Overall, they are a home run for me. I adore them. They are very different from anything Urban Decay has out in terms of shadow at the moment. The formula is different, the payoff, just the general feel of the product. If you hate sparkle, shimmer, glitter you might not feel the love but anyone who loves Urban Decay in general and just sparkly shadow should find these very appealing.

Loves it!

Thanks for this review. I was really worried about fallout and didn’t want to buy one until I knew about that. I tried wearing one of my glittery Sephora eyeshadows the other day and there was so much glitter fallout. EEK. I need something that stays put!

    • the Muse

hey mrs diva. not 100% free of fall out but pretty darn close. I find used wet is best as that really causes no fall out and still keeps a shimmery finish that’s vibrant and pretty 🙂

also use a good base to avoid fall out doll!

      • Mrs. Diva

Oh gosh yes, I always used a base. I have the UD primer right now. I really love it and it works well, but I still have fall out with eyeshadows that have big chunks of glitter. The finer the glitter the better it seems to stay.
I guess I am gonna have to buy one of these beauties at least. lol Thanks!

        • the Muse

good good mrs diva very important 😀 mac paint pots are also good they really cut fall out inhalf! I can’t say it’s completely fall out free but sponge applicators plus a good base def keep it mininmal and compared to UD’s regular shadow formula the fall out is super better on these! No chunky flaky shadow pieces and glitter a la the regular stuff! I take a piece of take sometimes and wrap around my finger, tacky side up, and I dab around my face to pick up access 🙂 hehe!

Your most welcome dear! You can always buy one to try now and if you love it, you can wait for the friends and family 30% off the next round and go to town grabbing other colors w00t!

  • Marina

OMG. I can imagine how long it tok you to write this post . Great job 😉 I like you with Griffith (lamost like Grifondor to me, LOL) the best 🙂

a slightly off question but the two keep crossing in my mind – i am very curious to see how these compare (other than the color range) with the stila jewel palette?

  • jenn

all the colors look beautiful on you, particularly bobby dazzle, atmosphere, and void. Did you apply them wet with a brush? Also, how did you apply to your lower lash line?

    Stunning!

    • the Muse

jenn omg lower lash is SUCH a pain in the butt! I used this dome smudge brush from sephora. The rest I applied dry with a sponge applicator and blended with a finger 😀

  • Phyrra

Atmosphere is beautiful and looks amazing on you.
Does void have pink shimmer in the grey?

  • Rhon228

Oh no! I promised myself no more shadows. I have a bunch of shadows, sticks, and pigments. My friends are promising to put me away if I get anymore. I guess this means I am going to the nut house soon because these are calling for me!

    • the Muse

LOL Rhon! 🙂 if they put you away I’ll visit 🙂 and bring makeup of course perhaps a la the butter knife trick of old? stuffed in a cake? 😀 smuggle it in?

  • Melissa

I haven’t ordered any yet.. .. but golly I want them all. I need void for sure.. and maybe one other 🙂

    • the Muse

melissa I hear ya :-D! Can’t resist! Void=great for smoked eye! Get atmosphere if you dig vibrant eyes it’s prob the most pigmented of them all!

  • Sparkle

Just out of curiosity, why do you always wear those headbands all of the time? 🙁

  • Maribel

    Wow!!
I didn’t expect these colors to be so sparkly, but they actually look really pretty!!! The looks you did are gorgeous too. 🙂
I’m definitely going to have to get my hands on some of these soon!

    • the Muse

hey maribel 🙂 They are so fun and the shimmer is just a plus imho 🙂 aw and thank you you’re very kind 🙂

  • Monique

I love this post, I was wondering if they would be up to the hype. They look so freaking cool on you! I really like too that you gave tips on how to get the most payoff. I have had the worse time with Nars looking great on swatches and in the pan, but when I go to put it on my eyes, the glitter magically disappears. Thank you, love this blog!

    • the Muse

thanks monique 🙂 thank you very much!

Oh yes please do follow some of the steps as really regular brushes=NO WAY. Sponges are key to pay on color and get minimal to no fall out 🙂 I can’t say it was completely fall out free but compared to UD shadows original formula it’s minimal for sure. Awww ya nars is kinda weird formula wise on occasion so totally know what you mean!

Aw thanks Monique I’m so glad you enjoy my babblings!

      Cheers!

  • Isabelle

    I NEED those!!!!
I don’t think anything could prevent me from buying 54, Void, Retrograde and Moon Spoon…Not even my credit card which doesn’t agree with me at all…
Nothing except the fact that thoses littles babies aren’t available in Europe yet….Ahhhh (despair…)
Thanks anyway The Muse, now I know which one will be my priority when I can get them!
    Lovely swatches!

    • the Muse

hey Isabella! How are you? How was your weekend? Sorry for the delayed reply!

LOL can’t blame you, nice right? aw damn! We def need to get that swap stuff up so my Euro babes, like you, can get some UD loving 😀

Thank YOU for the great comment! Hugs!

  • PinkyKathy

wow thanks for the review. I love your cloth and headband which match every eyeshadow. ( ^_^ ) Those remind me of many glittery japanese e/s. I think japanese e/s is more economical since all color come together in one palette.

ps. love Bobby Dazzle and VOID. :))

    • the Muse

aw kathy you rock thanks hun! that’s true Japanese shadows are always in a quad 😀 love that about Japanese makeup! 😀

Bobby Dazzle is a fav :-D!

  • Jennifer

I don’t think I would care for them, but of course would be tempted if they come out in some cute palette. Oh gosh, let me be clear to UD, no pop ups please, just something like the deluxe or ammo would be nice:)

    • the Muse

heck yes jennifer love the idea of a palette 😀 lol don’t love the pop ups!?

  • musicalhouses

aww, i was so excited for these, and then i saw that they were mostly sheer-ish, AND had huge glitter bits. meh. 🙁

    • the Muse

hey musicalhouses hmmm not huge glitter bits at all? at least not my formula! and not sheer either 🙂 they have a nice pop of color when applied correctly!

  • Robyn

54 looks amazing on you im tempted by that and by bobby dazzle purely for the name (wish cosmatcis would stop having cool names i loose so much money cause of that !)

i was really put off because the packaging wasnt interesting me but it flips open ?!?! now i likey very much

    • the Muse

aw thank you robyn you’re lovely! LOL TELL ME ABOUT IT! Names and packaging SLAY me! yup! You squeeze the slide and it flips up all techy like! LOVE!

  • Makeupgirl

Oh my I love the swatches!! Thank you, Muse. Order diamond dog and space cowboy asap. 😀

  • Andrea

I <3 UD shadows, especially the sparkly ones. My only gripe being the major fallout (ugh, so annoying and juvenile!). So I am hopeful after reading your review that these will work better for me.

Thanks again, Muse. Brilliant as always!

    • the Muse

aw heck yes me too andrea. fall out def is a pain! 😀 did u haul yet? if so any fall out? curious whatcha think!

      Aw thanks hun *hugs*

  • Kristina

The Ulta flyer that came in my Sunday paper has a 20% off coupon that doesn’t exclude UD this time! Score!

    • the Muse

000000ww000000tttt nice kristina go haul! come back tell us whatcha get!

  • Bakeneko

Wow, these look amazing on you – can’t decide which ones to get now…

I particularly like ‘Void’ on you – very sultry! 😀

  • Nia

Oh, at first I was a bit skeptical about the fallout, then they seemed so sheer. But on you they look amazing, especially Atmosphere!
So much to buy, so little opportunity 😉

    • the Muse

aw thanks nia! You’re such a doll! 😀 tell me ’bout it, my spring list is getting crazed!

  • gio

The colors look so pretty on you, especially Atmosphere! Thanks for the review.

  • K

Hi Muse. LOL, just like you, I fiddled with the packaging but find it quite fun, actually 🙂 I only have two so far (Retrograde and 54) and they’re LOVE! These are not LE products, are they? Hope not!

    • the Muse

lol k we are obviously easy to amuse b/c I thought it was adorable how they opened up! No no they aren’t LE thank god!

  • mary_in_wonder

Although I’m not a big sparkle lover, these do look good, and when I imagine them applied wet, jumping off the lids, I’m smirking all over =D

    • the Muse

NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOO sher the packaging is frakking cool! 😀 love the flip design! 🙂

  • jonnie

Ooh, I wants! I really really wants Bobby Dazzle… but I just bought the Nars spring duo and I told myself I had enough eyeshadow for now. Between these and the Alice palette I just heard about today now I need more. Sigh.

    • the Muse

awww jonnie sounds like you’re hauling spring goodies w00t 😀 Alice is LE but these are around a while so you can wait to get them!

  • Del

YAY! less fallout means I likey! likin the bobby dazzle & atmosphere on yah- from one spectrum to the other…thanks for the great review….now I’ll have to see when I can get to a Sephora….else it’s online shopping for me, which ends up being major damage!

    • the Muse

del couldn’t agree more 😀 my pleasure! 😀 lol tell me ’bout it online shopping always ends up as a disaster!!!! 🙂

  • Dana

I just purchased this in Diamond Dog, and now I want more! It’s so cute, it flips open, and I likey! lol… Now I want Bobby Dazzle, Moon Spoon and Space Cowboy! Might have to have another Sephora Haul before I leave Singapore 😉 No Urban Decay in Australia, and if there’s any, the price would be double the price in US!! Ridiculous!

    • the Muse

dana yay! so great! OMG GO GET MORE before going home 😀 Singapore is expensive but Australia is WORST!

  • LorraineER

Hey, i noticed whenever i google swatches & reviews on products that i want, your site pops up! I was enjoying reading your stuff so much I finally just bookmarked and started spending time flipping through your site for ideas what to buy, not just going to sephora and then checking to see what others had to say about the product- lol.
Anyhow, thanks so much for the great reviews and i gotta say you can rock blue shades of eye makeup like no one I’ve ever seen but you in VOID- somehow even more completely beautiful, I hope you wear this out sometimes!! Now i def. need to pick some of these up…

    • the Muse

hey lorraine so glad you found me 😀 I appreciate your visiting and reading my babble! awww thanks!!!!!!! cheers *Hugs* I really appreciate the awesome comment you’re lovely :D!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should wait for Urban Decay to do a Friends and Family I imagine they will shortly as it’s Spring 😀

      • LorraineER

You were right about friends & family! I took the opportunity to pick up one of the setting sprays. I’ve used it twice & it hasn’t been super-humid yet so I can’t say for sure that they are amazing or anything, however they did help the staying power of my face makeup so far.

        • the Muse

hey lorraine 😀 glad you hauled hun! I’m testing the sprays myself and so far a little meh but testing away 😀

  • Haley

It was really jank that Ulta didn’t have all the colors at the time, but I got ‘Atmosphere’ and love it! I did it with a teal winged liner on the top lid and it looked great!

  • anonymous
