Yay or Nay: Benefit Bathina New Look for Spring 2010

Hey chicklets!

I was going through the Benefit Spring Collection 2010 Catalog last night and I came across the new face of Benefit Bathina. She’s been revamped! Gasp!

Jump!

I absolutely adore Benefit Bathina as I’m all about 50’s retro pin up girls. Kinda obsessed with them actually and Bathina so embodied that. She was chic, she was sexy, she was retro, and she was flirty. She really had a retro feel.

Bathina has gone through a complete revamp for Spring 2010. Benefit has still embraced the roots and concept of the girl as she still has a semi-retro feel but she’s turned into more of Sandra Dee 1950’s beach blanket bingo type of chick. She’s adorable really. Very wholesome, very sweet, a little bit flirty, and very young.

So I guess in a way Bathina’s launch into the new millennium is one of sweetness rather than the sexified version of old.

What do you think?

Yay or Nay to the new Bathina?

For me it’s both a yay and a nay. I adore the new sweet Bathina but I gotta admit I totally dug on the retro, sexy version and will sadly miss it.

The new Benefit Bathina Body Balm will be available shortly from Benefit and sports a peachy pink golden sheen, yes the balm gets a revamp as well with a new vivid color which I likey! Kinda reminds me of NARS Orgasm on some levels.

Do your yayin’ or nayin’ in the comment field!

I much prefer the old version, she looks way too cute in the new one! I like vampy! Been loving your blog for months now, thought it was about time I commented ;o)

    • the Muse

Hey Babyd! thanks for coming out of lurkdom to say hey 😀 *hugs* I really appreciate the blog lovin’!

I like the old one too, totally into the vampy, sexy pin up girl! The new one is very sweet but my heart is with the old 🙂

  • Clair

The new Bathina looks like the old Bathina’s younger sister. Very “cute”. I will say that I do like the new red and pink color scheme on the box. Even still, I prefer the old look of Bathina herself. But maybe I’ll like the new formula color?

    • the Muse

hey clair very true 😀 younger sister-ish for sure! I think the new color looks rockin’! however I still love me some old bathina! 🙂

  • Felis

I liked Retro Sexy a lot better, but golden pink shimmer sounds like it will work with my skin tone more. It’s totally a wash. Stupid cutesy-pie croquet girl.

    • the Muse

me too felis, love the new shade, kinda reminds me of NARS Orgasm doesn’t it!? and def love the croquet, so cutes!

  • Brittany

I never understand what this product is exactly! Is it a lotion? Is it a powder?

  • Becky

I love the old bathina body balm a little too much..I use it for dressy occasions to help make me feel dressier? I guess, lol.

Very very curious about this new formula..is there a different scent as well? The packaging is cute but I will always love the classic one.

    • the Muse

hehe becky that was cute dressy occasions to make me feel dressier 😀 I dunno, I believe it’s the same, I got so excited I forgot to read the caption haha! I love the classic myself but wouldn’t mind a new scent that would be interestin’!

  • Becky

Haha thanks…I guess it’s like putting on your very special perfume for that special night out. 😛 i’m sure you get what i mean. :-D…definitely going to try the new one though..very curious.

    • the Muse

hi becky! it is I LOVE how it smells 😀 I am too! I have the old but don’t make nearly enough use of it 😀 but this new version has such a pretty tinge of peach.

  • Melissa

I’m Sad – Bathina is one of my favorite products and the tin coordinates with my bathroom set. If the new product works on my coloring and smells lovely, I’ll buy it but for once not for the Benefit pacakging. It looks like a character from a children’s story!

    • the Muse

aww melissa! me too love bathina 🙂 it does kinda look like childish but her short shorts give it a little flirty feel hehe!

  • TanGeRine

    Hi ..
I believe the change of it is like to target more on the younger customers since the former Bathina looks grown up and way too sexy. LOL.
This new Bathina is like many said “a younger — sister version” of the old Bathina. This is a cute version, anyway. I guess Benefit wants to give a picture of modern girls who hang out sexy in the sun rather than just in their own room..
So, let’s go croquet! It’s spring time!

    • the Muse

could be tangerine 😀 she is very cute 😀 LOL let’s go croquet in deed! She’s very sweet but I really loved the retro pin up girl as well :_D

  • K

Oh man, nayyyyyy. I was obsessed with Benefit as a teenager and remember loving the packaging for this… I don’t understand why the new Bathina is playing croquet, of all things, when she should be winking at us from her vanity with her legs aglow. I guess I’m a traditionalist, but I don’t like that so many companies (cosmetic and otherwise) are messing with their branding – you get accustomed to a style you’ve seen for years and then they alter it into something unrecognizable. 🙁 Hope the formula’s the same, though, and that it still smells fantastic.

    • the Muse

hey k I guess the croquet kinda makes her more fun? and less sexy 🙂

mmm true I did notice quite a few brands revamping! I tend to like new stuff as sometimes you get bored with the old but agree sometimes older is better and new stuff not so much!

I’m sure the formula is just as fab 🙂

  • lindsay mays

i think the old one looks way more glamourous. shes the epitome of old hollywood glamour, she reminds me of rita hayworth. the new one is very cutesy. she reminds me of sandra dee.

Im really gonna miss the former Bathina. She was sexy, and everytime I used this balm, that is what it made me feel like, whether I was going on a date with my hubby or just felt like indulging in a luxurious perfumed balm before I went to bed. Its not an everyday kinda thing, and this new replacement seems to give off the idea that you can wear it like lotion, whatever, no biggie, just another body balm, and it feels like the packaging is geared toward teens or something, feels weird. Its also smaller, whats up with that? I am very annoyed that cosmetic companies are doing this now (i.e: mac pigments)… but im still going to the Benefit counter, to give it a try, and see if maybe the balm itself is better. Y’never know.

    Hi Muse 🙂

Okay, since this is my first ever comment here (looong-time reader though) I’ll start with the general before the specific 🙂

The general is a big I LOVE YOUR BLOG! *fangirling* I can’t imagine how much work it must take to do all of this – I mean, makeup may be your hobby and trying and buying new stuff may be your go-to rainy day activity, but it’s one thing to dip a brush into something to try it out, and it’s QUITE another to put down a review or presentation that’s as organized and comprehensive as you always make these! But I’m really grateful you do it because I buy maybe 95% of my makeup online, so you’ve saved me buying more than a few things that wouldn’t work for me after all (and a few times I didn’t listen when you didn’t approve of something and bought it anyway, then regretted it lol).

Also, congrats on the new look! The peachy tone is all kinds of lovely, kinda vintage-y but subtle, not over the top. It’s great to have all the links to various categories and brands on one side, all collected together. Don’t get me wrong, the previous style was nice too, and it worked well enough, but this one really pulls everything together 🙂 And IIRC you’re a big fan of the NARS shade, ‘orgasm’ and isn’t that kind of a peachy pink too? If so, I like that it lines up that way too, pretty cool!

Okay, now onto the specific: I have the old Bathina. Once I was done with it, it was just too gorgeous to toss (agree with everyone that I like the old one better btw!) so I cleaned it out of the leftover balm and am now looking for a way to reuse it. It would be the perfect size to store makeup brushes (or pens!) except for the inner compartment (where the balm sat) getting in the way. If I could somehow lift out that section, it would be fantastic because then I would get twice the use: the outer tin for my makeup brushes and the inner section as a tray for lip glosses or other small stuff. But I don’t want to try anything without knowing more about how the tray is affixed to the tin, and I’m hoping that since you love this as much as you do, you might have an extra tin or two lying around that you could sacrifice to learn more? Maybe? Long shot, but I have to try!

I think it’s probably glued on, hopefully using the same kind of glue used to hold most makeup pans to their outer packaging – the stuff you can easily loosen by heating it up with a hairdryer for a few minutes (same method used for depotting makeup). Do you have a tin you don’t care about much and some time to hack at it and see what’s underneath? I know it’s asking a lot, but I’m hoping I have made you curious enough to try it out! Surely somewhere in the fabled Muse Stash there must be some brushes or pencils that would be right at home in an empty Bathina tin?
