DiorShow Extase Mascara Review

I’m so busy having my love/hate affair with DiorShow Extaste Mascara for the past month or so. We love each other, we hate each other, we want to fight, we want to make up…it’s been a whirlwind kinda relationship for the two of us.

DiorShow Extase Mascara is the newest mascara to grace the Dior family. With the promise of a ton of technology to make lashes look all high impact and incredible in a single stroke of course the Muse was excited. Promise me high-impact anything and I’ll be your best friend forever and ever.

The mascara is supposed to create a 3D volume effect while expanding lashes in size by up to 50% after application. See? See? It gets better and better right. Sounds like exactly what my lashes needed.

Jump it for the review.

Mmmmmm I dunno how I feel yet. I likey and I don’t likey. Dior Extase features this wicked cool tiered brush applicator but it’s a bit of a pain to work. I noticed the brush tends to pull out of the tube with a big old fat gob of mascara on it. You seriously have to tissue some of the product off or risk a messy application. This is a tad on the wasteful side as if I am going to tissue the brush off each time I apply, I’m basically tossing out good mascara right? On a good note if you pull out the wand slowly you can avoid the drama I described above.

Tiered brush is awesome. A Japanese brand I use, Fairy Drops, features the same sort of brush and it really does work fabulously at grasping lashes from the root and pulling them out. I simply adore a good mascara that can get ALL my lashes in one pull. I hate struggling with the tiny lashes in the inner corner of my eye. Those pesky buggers are the ones that most mascaras miss. Dior Extaste does a great job of grasping the whole lot and yanking them upwards and outwards.

The formula of the mascara is a nice pigmented black. I did feel the formula was slightly drying on my lashes but nothing too badly if I used a lash primer prior.

So here’s where my love/hate relationship begins.

I like the way the mascara grasps all my lashes and curls them upwards and out. It supplies good lenght and juices up my lashes nicely however I failed to see majorly dramatic results. I’ve grown accustomed to seeing mega drama when using Dior mascara. I don’t blame the mascara actually but myself. It seems that I need to master the correct technique with this as I’ve gotten several really good results when I applied it correctly and several really bad results when I applied it incorrectly.

From the knowledge I’ve gleaned so far the best application technique is the twist and apply motion. God, I hate having to twist while applying mascara as I make such a mess but this will get you the best results.

Overall, I’m in my learning phase at the moment so I haven’t decided whether I love or hate DiorShow Extaste Mascara. During my better results it’s a likey for sure. By the way I tried to take a series of different photos on different days so you can see the various results.

Anyone try?

Do share!

Curious how you’re feelin’ about Dior’s newest mascara!

Is this brush anything like the Smashbox DNA one? I wanted to like that one but I really really don’t… I get that clumpy issue and I don’t hit all the lashes evenly… 🙁

    • the Muse

jonnie I actually dig DNA a little bit 😀 it’s kinda the same but the DNA one has more of a roundness to it 😀

  • Angel

    Muse,

How do you get your lashes to stand up so wonderfully like that? I tried the Extase but I felt that the formula was just too wet and it ended up straightening my lashes and did not hold the curl. This goes for the Iconic as well so I’m not sure if my eyes are the problem here. Do you use an eyelash primer?

    • the Muse

      hey angel!

How are you love? Mind if I ask are you Asian? If so perhaps your lashes are a bit smaller/stubbier as most Asian girl’s have that problem. In these photos I used no primer simply twisted the wand. It’s about twisting it correctly to get it to work right 😀 Such a pain in the butt at times but when you master the technique it works great 🙂

      • Angel

Haha, yes I am Asian, but (if I may say so myself) my lashes are not the typical stubby Asian ones! But no matter how hard I try with the Extase I feel that the formula is too wet and it just straightens out my lashes. So I think it and I just have no fate to be friends. =( I took on your recommendation and tried the Jelly Pong Pong mascara and I like it! =D But compared to MJ’s Lash Gorgeous Wing I still like MJ’s more. =P

Random side question: How are you supposed to use Jelly Pong Pong’s Hawaiian Sun? I felt like I rubbed a ton onto that big flower puff but on my face nothing much shows up. I feel like I prefer my NARS Laguna more but I’m not sure if I’m just not using the Jelly Pong Pong one correctly…=\

I’ve been thinking about getting this for a while. I’m stocked up on mascara for the next few years since I stocked up on the DiorShow Lash Essentials set before Christmas…. butttt for Dior, I might add this to my beauty arsenal.

What lash primer do you use, Muse?

By the by, have you hauled Kat Von D’s new palette yet? I’d love to know your thoughts! Me, I canceled my order and am making a deal to abstain from online purchasing for a while. Eep!

  • shooshi

I actually think it looks quite nice. Is it clumpy though? I’m a fan of thickening and lengthening mascaras and if you throw in curling that would be perfect. I like YSL’s faux cils its pretty much my HG mascara. I just got their new Singulier it has a somewhat similar wand to the Extase, I’m still playing with it too, not sure how I feel about it yet.

  • Cindy (Prime Beauty)

I’m with you Muse! I too found it gloppy when coming out of the tube. This really annoys me as I don’t think I should have to wipe it down every time, especially for $28 a tube. I prefer Dior Iconic anyday.

    • the Muse

mmm yes cindy! sigh! very annoying! I love ionic and thankful it doesn’t come out in big gobs. I slowly pull the wand out and that seems to have helped!

sorry for the delayed reply 🙂

  • Samantha

I don’t understand what you mean by “twist”. Could you explain. Thanks.

  • Sue

I have tried this mascara and I absolutely love it. It does get a bit clumpy but it makes your lashes super long. I will buy it over and over again.

  • PJ

I’m new to the site and I love your reviews! So honest and informative. Looks like I will pass on this mascara. I am a mascara fiend but I hate it when overpriced ones don’t perform well. I really love MUFE and Smashbox mascaras.

    • the Muse

Hi PJ!!!!!!!! Welcome! So nice to hear from you! aw thank you so much 🙂 I’m the same sigh. I hate drugstore mascaras for the most part but hate having to pay $$ for ones that don’t perform well 🙁 My favs are from a Japanese brand but I like Smashbox too 🙂 I kinda dug the lash DNA even though the brush was strange!

Hope to talk to you again soon PJ!

  • Amelie

I got a cute little sample of this mascara when I bought a Dior foundation, and I have to say its beautifully made ^^ the brush works really well, but its the formula I love. I splurge on foundations, they’re my soft spot, so I usually just buy drugstore mascaras… but now I can see why there’re so many mascara junkies out there! This formula is so creamy, it just glides onto the lashes really easily without any clumps. It doesn’t stick together or make you want to rub your eyes, and best of all it makes my lashes all silky 😀 it holds a curl well and works under false lashes too… hard to find a reason to say no in my opinion 🙂

    • the Muse

aw amelie what a lovely review 😀 so glad you are enjoying this how wonderful!!!!!!!! 😀 thanks for your mini review!

  • Fiona

I think this mascara is fabulous. The best I’ve used yet. They all promise the Earth and deliver nada. I will, for sure, be a regular user of this product.

  • Jessica

I have to admit I have a similar relationship with DiorShow Extase too, it’s really great and then sometimes not so great blah blah blah….I do like it most of the time though like probably 8/10 times.
