Beauty Muse: Drugstore Foundation

Wanna Beauty Muse Drugstore Foundation with me? This is such a hard one because I swear I can take drugstore foundation and make it so much better.

How would you improve drugstore foundation?

Jump!

Dear drugstore brands,

Colors like yellow, beige, orange, or generally muddy shades are not flattering on anyone’s skin tone.

k, thanks.

the Muse and friends.

Seriously, what the hell is up with the shades at the drugstore? They are all muddy brown or weird orange shades or yellow…just generally bad! I swear everything is almost always beige, beige, beige.

If I needed to take drugstore foundation and make it better I’d start by working on the bloody shades offered plus some cute packaging wouldn’t go unnoticed either (we aren’t all 80 years old so a little revamp on those mature bottles you package the stuff in wouldn’t hurt!).

How would you change it and make it better?

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. A pink based range and yellow based range. Nothing orange, and please can we just get proper colours for dark skinned girls out there? I swear they’re not ashy brown.

  • Phyrra

I’d make them offer neutral shades, as opposed to their current crap.

  • mercedes

urgg! the one thing i HATE about drugstore brands is there shades!! i dont werer foundation anymore beacuse of this, heres what happened i purchased covergirl clean makeup in classic ivory, and i went to my sisters track meet and she told me i looked ..PINK!!! i was so embarrassed,i would definetly change the shades to match perfectly.

    • the Muse

mercedes I rarely do ds brand base but must say the colors all disagree with me 😛 LOL pink really? normally I come out orange or muddy when it comes to DS brands!

  • Su

I would like to have more olive tone foundation ( I have not come across any foundation which is my shade..I have strong yellow olive tone most of the foundations I have tried are too brown (neutral?) or orange…come onebe more yellow…I don’t have any drug store foundation right now but I will say they need to improve on packaging ( one of the reason they don’t catch my eyes ) and put a short explanation on their various foundations at the stand ( like coverage, finish, how long it last, for what skin type ) since usually there is no sales lady to tell all those…I hardly buy drug store foundation because I don’t know what those foundations do…

  • Ally

Doesn’t hurt to have practical yet pretty packaging! AND let’s not forget people have different UNDERTONES 😀
I’m an asian with fair skin, but I have peachy-yellow undertone and I don’t want to look zombie white or sallow Ally XD
Multi-functionality like BB creams would get a big yay for me also (I”m greedy hehe)^^

    • the Muse

sounds ’bout right to me ally 😀 OMG PLEASE drugstore gods hear our prayers we need BB’s in the US!!!!!!

  • jonnie

Yup, the shades… does anyone else have fond (okay, not so fond) memories of high school and having to warn each other when they had the orange line on their jaw lines? I was so jealous of the one friend I had whose mother would actually buy her Clinique… all the rest of us were stuck with what we could buy at Wal-Mart. And other than my friend’s Clinique, I didn’t even know anything else was out there! Ahh, the innocent days… 🙂

    • the Muse

lol jonnie! I remember those days well! lord knows I didn’t wear base in school so I was lucky but I do remember my ds days very well, scared, hold me!

  • Tohnia

I would say the SMELL. Drugstore foundations smell so bad. Revlon is especially guilty about this. Love my Colorstay, but HATE the smell. I would also like to see some yellow undertones. I’m mixed with yellow/peach undertones in my skin and some variety there would be good. BB creams would be awesome too!

    • the Muse

oh true tohnia true! god bb creams sad sigh never happen but would love! just would never be understood by the US market but one could hope!

  • Jenny

hm. the beige colors work for me. i always look for something with beige in the name so itll match me… but i really wish drugstores would put testers out before we commit to buying a shade just to find out it makes us look like a vampire or oompa loompa

    • the Muse

hey jenny what do you have against oompa loompas!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-D!

  • SilhouetteScreams

I wish they offered more yellow based shades, it seems like everything I try has overwhelmingly pink undertones! D:

    • the Muse

silhouette just the opposite here everything seems too beige to me

  • Shao

    Testers. Omg. Please. TESTERS.
Seriously, the biggest turnoff about drugstore foundations for me is having to guess and guess at my shade. Maybelline started that recently with their Age Rewinding (?) Foundation, so I’m hoping more brands will follow that.

    • the Muse

shao I’ve seen a few testers here and there lately including the age rewind eraser thingy 😀 so maybe soon we will see more brands embrace it 😀

  • Laura

I use lots of high end makeup. Except my foundation. I use covergirl tinted moisturizer, but I add Ravenously positively ageless face sunscreen. And Benefit high beam. And it’s. Perfect! Covergirl does a good drugstore foundation. I checked MUA first. And they love it.

    • the Muse

hey laura I haven’t tried to be honest as I’m mostly a BB cream girl but sounds great 🙂

  • Laura

That ravenously was suppose to be Aveeno of course. Darn spell check

  • Gia

I would say testers but I really don’t think the people at Wal-mart and CVS would be as on top of cleaning the tester areas as the people at Sephora.

Most I try are too drying!! They dry me out like crazy. And the design of the bottles. The ones i’ve tried have the pour out type, and either it’s a pain to get out or it all comes rushing out at once and i spill half the bottle. I need pumps!

    • the Muse

ew tell me ’bout it gia like the target beauty section is gross as hell. I agree, bottles are really cheesy!

  • Ann

Lighter shades! Drugstore foundations hardly ever have lighter shades. And when the website says they do have a light shade like ivory, you can never find in the drugstore! For some reason they always skip the lightest color. I can’t be the only one with a pale skin, can I?

    • the Muse

YES ann! Instead of beige, beige, beige! Nope you aren’t. Personally I get a ton of beige at my ds and muddy orange strange shades!

  • gio

I wish they offered more pink based shades and also more shades for pale skin. I’m fair -skinned and all the drugstore foundations I’ve tried, even though their were the lightest shades available, were just way too dark for me and made me look orange! 🙁

  • jackieg02

Not only drugstore foundation, but all foundations, should come with a pump. Seriously. It makes my life easier if my foundation came with a pump on it!

Agreed with the color selection. I’m so white, my correct shade is about the color of White Out. I need some lighter colors!!

  • Jakeline

well one foundation that has awesome foundation is the revlon photoready its got the BEST pump ever..anyway drugstores—please fix the color selection and seals (hey i dont want over people touching my makeup) and packaging especially

  • savannah

i use the covergirl advanced radiance one and it fits my skin like my laura mercier one and josie maran one. i think it works pretty well. better than maybelline.

  • Robyn

i dont care about packaging if its drud store but im with you on the shade range the current shade range seems to be have invented by a descendant of an oompa loompa!

and maybe smell i often find drugstore ones smell more chemically or are yucky fragranced

    • the Muse

omg tell me about robyn! orange orange or beige!!!!!!! and yes def smells 😛

  • TooInvolved

Thank you for this blog post. This is the exact same thing I thought yesterday when shopping for foundations.

  • Casey

My complaint is actually that drugstore foundations aren’t yellow ENOUGH for me, lol.
I’m too asian for drugstore foundations. They either are way too pink on me or way too ashy and grey (this is how beige foundations look on me lol). Then there are the flat-out orange ones…Hey drugstore foundations, yellow undertones does NOT equal orange skin.

I think all drugstore foundations should have a cool, warm, and neutral range. Although it’s a lot of colours and more expensive to produce, it would help them sell more and make customers happier.
