HourGlass Prodigy Lip Gloss Review and Swatches

I’ll be honest the whole appeal of the new HourGlass Prodigy Lip Gloss started because of a single color, Pulse. Pulse so reminded me of NARS Orgasm for some reason and I simply had to have it after seeing it plus it didn’t hurt that the gloss had uber cool, techy packaging, that always appeals to this Muse!

Jump!

I know, I know everyone is so not on board because of the price mark on this lip gloss. Le ouch at $26 bucks! Let’s get that out of the way and discuss the price first.

A MAC Lipglass will set you back $14 for 4.8g/0.17oz. Although it’s slim size will trick you up into believing it’s actually housing a smaller amount of product, HourGlass Prodigy Lip Gloss is actually bigger. 7.2g/0.25oz which is a bit more than you’re actually getting from a MAC Lipglass or most glosses really.

On to that cool packaging…..

Packaging definitely holds part of my heart. The gloss comes housed in an uber slim case, very techy looking. Loves it. However, I do experience a problem getting the lid off on occasion as for some reason when it’s on, it’s on and it’s not interested in coming off unless you struggle with it a fair bit. I’m overlooking that as I simply dig the slim-line packaging.

The formula has decent color payoff with a hydrating formula that has a slick, glossy finish. Love the formula big time but it doesn’t have the best wear time because of it’s watery texture. The gloss isn’t sticky or tacky which is always a plus in my book however it does suffer from not wearing so long due to this. The applicator is slant tip which is quite slim but fits the contour of my lips nicely and smooths the gloss on well enough.

As I mentioned above, the shade I got was Pulse which actually had me at hello. It’s golden strawberry shade that leans towards being a tad golden coral-ish.

Overall, I actually liked the gloss alot and I’m considering another shade, Hypnotic, to add to my current wishy list. I like the slick packaging and the gloss itself looks very flattering on my lips.

I actually have this! I was totally blown away by that packaging, too. lol.

I’m pretty excited to review it myself. Glad I’m not the only one that’s totally entranced by this stuff. 😀

    • the Muse

hey kel! how are you doll? Me too! Everyone keeps ranting on the price but I actually totally dig the gloss 😀 what shade (shades) do you have?

      • Kelsey

I’m doing good! Totally loving this weather we’re having. How are you? 😀

I actually have Pulse also! After trying that one, I’m really wanting Surreal. You know, I really don’t care what the price is, as long as it’s a quality product. If it was total garbage, I’d be a little more peeved about the price tag, but because it’s so awesome, I don’t mind one bit. lol

        • the Muse

I’m the same Kel…really couldn’t care less about price so long as it rocks it 😀 I’m great! Hanging in 😀

  • Kate

Oooh, I kinda want. I love that color which looks a bit “lippy” plus more. I keep buying lip glosses simply because my lips get dry and I hate applying lipstick on a dry lip. I want something that will keep my lips moist for a bit. This looks like something I can stash at my desk at work and pull out when I want color and not have a “OMG the librarian is wearing funky makeup!” effect.

    • the Muse

kate it’s really rather nice 😀 mmm have you tried beautiful twists lip conditioner? It’s really nice on bare lips, very moist, hydrating 😀 OMG you’re a librarian? I envy you! that must be the coolest job evers!

      • Kate

I’m not quite a librarian yet (I have the degree and work in a library, I just don’t have a librarian job.) But patrons pretty much call me a librarian because I’m out on the desk helping them! lol It is a great job, and one suited for me because I love books way more than I love makeup.

The only problem is I’m not always sure what makeup is ok to wear to work and what might be a bit much.

        • the Muse

me too kate, love books way more than makeup that is 😀

sounds very librarian-ish to me hun!!!!!!! 😀 how’s the environment? Other people you work with? casual? I’m a true believer that any shades are perfectly work safe when done up correctly. You can totally rock green for example if you do so in an understated way 😀

          • Kate

It is pretty causal. So as long as I’m not rocking glittery sparkles or anything I could get away with it. (So that leaves out half of the Urban Decay’s eyeshadow line! lol) BUT I think its more of a personal issue for me–trying not to call attention to myself so sticking with “safe” makeup colors in nudes and browns.

I am wearing Opi’s Pearl of Wisdom polish on my nails today! Just flashy enough to be different, but light enough so if I chip it the whole world won’t know!

          • the Muse

LOL kate UD is scaries with glitter 😀 Awww! I love rocking crazy shades but lately I lean towards safe makeup too! Pearl of Wisdom is a gorg color le sigh wish I was a nail girl sometimes!

  • Marcy

That packaging is kinda cool. Reminds me a bit of pocket sized toothpaste for some reason? Also, does the glitter get left behind? Reason I ask is I did some MU swap with a friend and got this Dior gloss and it is so long lasting, but after eating lunch I got lots of gold glitter left behind on my lips. Not that the men at my work will ever notice (out of the 25 odd people in the office there are 2 women including me), but still, it irks me!

I’m building up a list to buy when I’m going to Hawaii in October, and I think I’ll add this to my list of unavailable-in-New-Zealand cosmetics to buy. Sephora here I come!

    • the Muse

      hey marcy!

Nope, no glitter left behind hun. I know what you mean milani’s new gloss and dazzleglass is guilty of this, but this doesn’t leave any behind 😀 I can understand as it looks somewhat silly walking around with glitter on your lips if you fail to touch up ya know?

omg hawaii are you teasing me? i wanna go 😀

  • Robyn

after clearing out my bag (yeah dont do it that often its so big i never really see the bottom) and finding an unfortunate lipgloss leakage i think the struggle with the top is actually a MEGA bonus

that sure is some sexy packaging

    • the Muse

robyn it’ll stay on SUPER tight that I can promise. Ugh lipgloss leakage is the worst, worst than powder exploding 😀 at least powder we can whisk away but gloss is sticky as hell and messy!

      • laura r

Last summer a favourite coral lippie lost its lid in my hobo bag. The pretty lining was just covered in waxy, messy red smears!!! And that also happened to a pretty linen satchel I used to have- which pretty much ruined it. 🙁 You’re quite right, the tight lid is an advantage.

        • the Muse

omg laura that stinks. I had to toss out an expensive bag due to leakage! once it gets in there it’s extremely difficult to get out 🙁 and makes EVERYTHING a mess!

  • Daituf

    Le ouch indeed…
if only the packaging weren’t so unique and innovative!!! :S
Meh…still ain’t gonna shell out almost 30 bucks for it…
but let me know if it goes on sale eh? 😀

    • the Muse

hey daituf 🙂 it’s a great gloss with cool packaging so I can’t complain too much about it especially since it has alot inside w00t! 😀 Sure…dunno if that will happen though outside of the Sephora FF but will keep you posted.

  • laura r

ooooh, the packaging is to die for. is it just me or does it resemble a hip flask?
    LOL!

    • the Muse

omg yes laura lol! I didn’t think of that but yes! how are you btw? long time no speak 😀

      • laura r

i know, right? aw, you’re so nice to ask. i’m good. just had a busy season in my life so while i kept reading i didn’t stick around to comment. 🙂 and i maxed out my credit card so i was avoiding lemmings, LOL.

        • the Muse

LOL laura aw I can’t blame you! freaking lemmings are the work of the debil 😀

I’m glad you’re well as I’m so used to seeing you say hello in the comment box I had missed ya! Busy here too so I can relate!

  • laura r

AWWW. my lil heart just grew 3 sizes.
hope your busy season is also a profitable one, then! yay Spring!

    • the Muse

LOL you sound like the grinch laura haha! my lil heart just grew 3 sizes 😀 aw thankfully yes it’s been both PHEW! with this economy one never knows but it’s been good thank god. We haven’t lost any business nor have we gained but we are still at what we were last year and the year before so that’s always a good thing. Insurance is a tricky business 😀

  • Inês

I so want this! But it seems like it’s not available worldwide XD But it sounds like it’s a great gloss, and Pulse is amazing, I love colors like that!

    • the Muse

oh me too ines! colors like pulse are SO ME 😀 aw sorry it isn’t available WW le sigh 🙁
