Musings of the Day: Buyer’s Remorse

It happens to the best of us, buyer’s remorse. We see that glittering, gleaming palette at our local makeup counter and we give into it’s evil temptation and purchase it!

We’re happy and excited as we leave the store but we regret the damn purchase when we get home and realize we SO didn’t need it!

Are you experiencing buyer’s remorse as of late?

What item or items are you regretful you purchased lately?

Jump ahead for mine!

I so regret indulging in Cle de Peau Beaute Concealer. OMG I feel like it’s so over hyped. It’s a really nice product but the $70 price tag really had me experiencing severe buyer’s remorse after realizing it was way over hyped. People talk about it as the end all concealer but it really wasn’t for me.

Sigh!

That’s my buyer’s remorse…

Aside from that have been pretty happy with everything I’ve purchased recently and if I was unhappy it was probably too cheap to complain about.

How about you?

Dermalogica’s Precleanse; I purchased this because I liked the texture of it, but every time I use it it irritates my skin. I have a nearly full bottle that I’ll never use so I guess I should swap it or something 😛

    • the Muse

aw sorry to hear alex!!!!!!!! I hope it didn’t cost a whole lot! 🙁

  • Su

I have a lot of remorse for this month
-cle de peau concealer (I am using bobbi brown color corrector and it is serving me well but since everyone is raving how great this concealer is I gave into temptation)
-kanebo silk peeling powder (sound really cool and wanted to try since it has great review but I already have 2 great scrubs which I like T.T)
-cle de peau cleanser (I do need a cleanser but now I am regretting I should have bought much cheaper one T.T)
-cle de pear eyeshadow quads (bought 2 of them T.T)
-naked cosmetics eyeshadow pigments (bought it as iMATS london and even though it is on discount it is still so expensive and considering my collection of eyeshadows I don’t really need them)
-ysl lipsticks (i just bought 6 of them…ya ya crazy to buy 6 at one go I have a lot of lip sticks maybe not as much as some ppl collection but it is a lot since I am not really a lip sticks person)
-laneige foundation ( I have tons of foundation and I love all of them but well…T.T)

so don’t worry you are not alone lol…I have a lot of impulse purchase T.T

    • the Muse

omg su I love BB color corrector palette so much better than cle de peau! Totally buyer’s remorse I feel your pain!

I never tried the CDP cleanser sorry to hear you regret it 🙁 aw! damn girl you got alot of impulse going on! I’m jealous of all that good hauling even if it’s remorseful LOL!

    • Robin

I bought the Kanebo Silk Peeling Powder in 2005 as part of a birthday haul. It took forever to sue up, so that was good, but it was too gentle for me. There are plenty of other scrubs out there which exfoliate better for less money.

  • LINDARRAGNAR

OMMG no offence muse but i think cle de peau just over all is over rated 🙂

the only thing i ever regret buying is definintly bare minerals (se expensive and crappy) and this l’oreal true match powder it can’t caver squat so i use it as a finishing powder 🙂

atleast by you reviewing the concealer you’ll help others not make the same mistake

    • the Muse

lol linda learned the hard way!!!!!!!!!!!! hehe yes please don’t make my 70 bucks mistake 😀 BE is damn itchy on me. I tried the new foundation and was surprised it worked well, no itch, but regular BE OMG feels like small bugs crawling around my face UGH!

      • lindarragnar

omg it makes my face itch too D: like I would put it on and have to remove it or else I would have scratched my face off DX

        • the Muse

linda SAME here hun! The matte seems to be a little bit better but the regular version is OMG itchy!

      • NJ

have you tried the matte? I have the same prob with the original ,its the bismuth

  • Renata

I regret buying MUFE lifting concealer. It’s kind of drying, I see fine lines I NEVER had after 3 days wearing it. Maybe it’s good for oily skin, but it’s not good for mine. 🙁

    • the Muse

hey renata hun how are you? I have a few comments from you to get through, I am not ignoring you just backed up with comments but I will chat ya soon k? 🙂

Oh I liked the lifting one I’m surprised it was drying! gasp! It was my HG for a long time 🙂 but not so much anymore! Try out BB corrector palette, WAY moisturizing 🙂

  • Renata

    It’s ok! 🙂

I regret buying this concealer because it’s not that good, and because I’m perfectly happy with my dermablend smooth concealer. Better than BB, in my opinion. So… I don’t really know WHY I bought it! lol

I’m not looking for the perfect concealer anymore. Now I’m chasing perfect powder foundation, perfect super coverage ‘glowing’ foundation… And some other things. hehe

Don’t worry if you can’t reply soon. I understand. 😉

    • the Muse

Renata it’s the allure of trying something new 😀 One word=BB Cream 😀 It’s the best for a great foundation!

Aw thanks hun! I try to get to the new ones first and that makes the old ones pile up *smacks forehead*

  • jonnie

I bought a big ol’ bottle of Korres White Tea cleanser… the sample I got was great, but after investing in a huge bottle and using it for a couple weeks I started really breaking out. Sigh. I don’t know if that counts or not, since I only regretted it after I started breaking out… Otherwise, I’ve bought more than I strictly need in the last few months but I like everything so no real regrets…

  • Marina

Funny you should post this–I was just trying to make something work today that I bought ages ago and never touch…My first ever NARS duo in Rated R. I love all things bright, but these colors just are not as fab as they seemed. The green actually appears dull on my lid, and I don’t find the colors to be cohesive at all. Major disappointment at $32! I bought it back in June (along with my Too Faced So Smurfy shadows…major purchase fail all around!) and have maybe used it once…unsuccessfully.

    • the Muse

ugh marina I loved the smurfy shadows but it was MEGA fall out le sigh! So pretty but so hard to use. I find nars are hit and miss with shadows, some are AWESOME, some not so much sigh!

  • Renata

I have the Shills Super Magic and I love it, but… Something is missing. I’m still looking. I heard that the MUFE shine on compact would get that ‘flat look’ away from my face. I’ll keep reading reviews, I can’t have many regrets, as you know. 🙂

    tks!

    • the Muse

hey renata I have too many regrets lol 😀 Shills Super Magic BB!? Six in One? 🙂

  • Tracy

I regret buying Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage concealer. It also has great reviews so I caved and bought it for under my eyes. Big mistake. It is way to dry and doesn’t not go on easily. Just didn’t work for me at all. And here in Canada it’s got a pretty hefty price tag.
Funny how it seems that most of our regrets are concealers!
I’m going to have to check out Bobbi Brown’s colour corrector. It won’t be a regret for me, will it? 🙂

    • the Muse

I’m the fence about that one myself Tracy. I got it with the flawless face kit (it’s the concealer plus powder for setting) and I’m kinda like meh when I compare it to BB concealer so I’m actually glad it came with a kit and I didn’t pay big bucks for it on it’s own!

I don’t think so hun! I got the four color corrector palette from qvc, believe it set me back $65 or so. At first I wasn’t really impressed but it’s since become my HG!!!!!!!! 😀

I have a review for it around here someplace!

  • imprompturoses

Sephora brush cleaner (in liquid & spray form). It works fine…. but just as fine as my $2 softsoap…

    • the Muse

aw roses, thanks was considerin’ it! you saved me some buckage!

  • Marsha

    I’m totally regretting these
-Rimmel Exaggerate waterproof eyeliner. The other eyeliners I have from Rimmel are wonderful and this one just… isn’t. and they lied about the waterproofness (is that even a word?lol)
Revlon Colorstay Finishing Powder. It’s a really great product, but I don’t know what to do with it. It’s way to shimmery for daytime makeup. It’s just so pretty, I had to have it, now it’s collecting dust. I like my MSF better.

I have buyer’s remorse everytime I go to the drugstore because everything is so cheap! Some drugstore products are awesome and some are just not.

    • the Muse

omg marsha me too! about 90% of the time complete and utter buyer’s remorse whenever I visit the DS! I actually avoided the DS for ages but since more and more readers requested I do DS reviews I started visiting often but I must say most times it’s utter crap 😛

  • donna

I regret buying the urban decay deluxe shadow palette. not that it isn’t amazing; i just really dont need it. i already have like 5 urban decay palettes and too many single shadows. it was like $40! 🙁

    • the Muse

aw sorry to hear it donna. I love me some UD but sometimes I feel like I don’t use my palettes nearly enough so it’s understandable how you feel 🙁

  • Mary

I don’t really get much buyer’s remorse because I research makeup SO MUCH prior to buying it, but recently I bought a Kat Von D duo and I have used it once in the past like 2 months (the pigmentation disappointed me, and using it wet didn’t help much). Plus, they lowered the price like a week after I bought it 🙁

    • the Muse

mary you’re my hero I so do but even after hearing a crummy review I feel compelled to try it for myself. ugh sorry did you call and ask for a refund!?

  • jessica

hhmmm…The last item I actually regret buying is MAC Baby Goth Girl nail laquer. I bought it without swatching and man it stinks. I wore it once but it just looked completely black, no gangster purple shimmer or glitter sheen. BORING. Maybe also Bat Black cream base, used only once (crease city) but good for when I do a serious smoky eye in the future. I guess I bought into the Style Black hype. I did buy Seriously Hip nail polish and Young Punk mineralize eye shadow from that collection and I like those still, I guess its hit or miss. Otherwise I’ve been much more cautious with my beauty purchases lately.

Oh that Cle de Paeu crap always sounds like its gonna change your life in the magazines but seventy bucks is straight up rape.

    • the Muse

hey jessica I’m so not a naul girl but I’ll take your word for it that it was bad 😀 LOLLLLLLLLL true, yes indeed $70 is abusive 😀

  • Ashley

    Lancome
    – Primeordiale Skin Recharge Creame with SPF 15 (For my mum… I talked her into getting it but it’s making her face so oily!!)
    – Effacernes Waterproof Undereye Concealer (For myself… it’s kind of ashy & doesn’t blend well. Plus it enhances my fine lines & I’m only 18!!)
    Rimmel
    – The Max Volume Flash (clumpy, oh so clumpy)
    Victoria Secret Beauty Rush
    – Chubby Eyestick
    – Cream Shadow
(Both are extremely hard & flakes off after an 1 hour…)

While I thought I was buying it for all the right reasons & meeting the budget point, I screwed up big time. I could have used that hard earned money for 2 pairs of heels and grape juice which I know I would have enjoyed 🙁

    • the Muse

damn ashley that’s a whole lot of regretting! 😀 Aw I’m so sorry hun! 🙁

  • Hella

The Bourjois Toilette du Visage range… I got the toner, the fresh cleansing gel, the scrub, and the wipes as a gift… All except the wipes are utterly disgusting. I thought the products would be so nice, pleasure to use and so on… Not so. The toner makes my skin oily in the mornings, the gel is… well, yucky, the scrub is too creamy… I’m going back to my previous routine – Yves Rocher’s Pure Calmille!!!

    • the Muse

god hella you’re not the 1st person that said this so I’m glad I didn’t haul it particularly b/c I have to get it from the UK and pay airmail etc…. money saved phew

  • Angie Twe

Well, I don’t have a huge collection, so I guess I bought only one thing wrong, the cheap drugstore concealer.

To hell it didnt conceal anything! And it cakes up. really bad.

But my lesson, don’t think of buying cheap durgstore products just to save some money. I’d rather save lots of money and buy a higher end prdt.

    • the Muse

aw angie been burned more than once when it comes to ds concealer I totally understand! you should def indulge in higher end as lord knows you can waste millions on ds that just doesn’t work 🙁

  • Anitacska

$70 concealer??? No wonder you regret buying it, lol.

I’m an impulse buyer, so constantly regretting buying things, lol, although I can’t think of anything specific right now other than some heavily reduced Body Shop gift pack that I really didn’t need, but it didn’t cost much, so hohum.

    • the Muse

lol anita indeed! I’m guilty of buying many a thing on sale and not needing it 🙂

    • the Muse

omg really penelope? it’s been on my wish list for ages! sounded really amazing but no go!? GASP!

  • Janet

i recently got skin drink aqua from etude house to replace my light moisturizer. but it’s a bit sticky so i’m definitely regretting the purchase… but not too much since it was only KRW6,000 (about $5~6) 😀

    • the Muse

that’s not too bad $$ wise Janet but I totally understand. I have some of the aqua sherbet like myself and it’s a tad sticky sigh

  • carielle

I regret buying the Lancome Pop ‘N Petrol eyeshadow palette. For the $$ it costs…and the actual size of each shadow as shrunk considerably since the summer collection eyeshadow palette. What ‘s up with that ?
Also, not that I regret buying any of the lipsticks I’ve bought as of late…but my quest for finding the most incredible lipstick just never seems to end….no matter how incredibly nice the sticks are when I buy them.
Ah ! well ! I guess that’s what it is to be a cosmetic junkie ?!
I see some are really worse then me …..I felt better just reading the other’s post..hi! hi! hi!

    • the Muse

carielle are they really smaller? wow! LOL!!!!!!!! you’re cute 😀 It always feel better when you hear someone Else’s buyer’s remorse haha!

  • Caroline

My most recent purchase that I have remorse over is the Smashbox eye lid primer. I read the bad reviews on it and STILL purchased it! It is very dry and hard to spread on my lids. $20 down the drain!

    • the Muse

ugh caroline sorry to hear doll! so many people rec this to me so I’m glad I didn’t indulge!

  • Becky

I think I regret buying a mac concealer. It was like a moisture blend? or something. Anyway, it doesn’t cover my super dark circles enough. It’s much too sheer and light…but the mac lady said it looked perfect and i went for it anyway…regret it.

    • the Muse

hey becky…mac concealer is not too bad but It’s a tad drying on me sometimes. sorry to hear it didn’t do so well at covering up for you 😛

  • Ceriene

Benefit’s Dandelion and Perfect 10. Dandelion’s just too light for my NC25 skin. I can apply a good amount, and see nothing. Once I get it to show up, my cheeks look ridiculous and fake!pink. Perfect 10’s concept for a bronzer and a highlighter all in one is a cute concept, but it’s just impossible to apply in practice, because my cheekbones and contours aren’t (and shouldn’t be!) right next to each other.

    Those MA’s at the Benefit counter are so nice and talk me into anything. u_u;

    • the Muse

      hey ceriene I still haven’t hauled 10 but guess I won’t now 😀

LOL!!!!!!!!! I hear ya! blame the MA’s good choice 😀

  • resham

Mine was this MAC straw harvest eye shadow…it is just so similar to what I have from MAC from past collection…I felt cheated by MAC…as if they changed the name and fooled me….:(

Also I picked a couple of NUDE lipsticks by MAC because of all the hype…I KNOW NUDE NUDES don’t work for me….

    • the Muse

aw resham sorry to hear it! I regret so many mac shadow purchases as I know I can dupe a ton of ’em 😛 NUDES SOOOOOOOOO do not work for me either!

  • Fabiola

I regret buying Maybelline’s mineral concealer. It looked okay when I tried it at my drugstore, but even if I just apply the tiniest amount, my under eye area looks white in natural daylight. I’m glad I bought it in sale, but now it’s just lying around on my bedside table. I do wish brands over here would also cater to people with yellow-toned skin.

    • the Muse

aw sorry to hear fabiola I almost always disappointed with ds concealer le sigh!

  • Ada

I also regret the UD Deluxe palette I bought last fall. The colours are pretty, but I can seem to put them together for a decent look. Since then, I’ve really cut back on spending anything on mu, so no recent regrets!

  • SJG

I am with Donna – except my regrets are palettes in general. I’ll never ever buy one again that has lipstick next to e/s & blush (talk about a yucky mess) and even if it’s all e/s or all lip, you always end up with THAT ONE that you only used 1/18 as much as the rest of them. Thank heaven for depotting so you don’t have to carry the whole big package around.

I have to squash this lemming all the time though, since nice new palettes look SO pretty.

    • the Muse

sjg ya, palettes are heck messy. It’s difficult saying no to ’em honestly I end up indulging just b/c they are pretty and I try to make peace with the fact they are so messy and give it an excuse that it’s pretty 😀

  • MC

Urban Decay’s Surreal Skin Cream to Powder Foundation. It seemed to work for like a week then…looked all chalky after wards. I kept forgetting to return/exchange it to Sephora so I am now stuck with it.

    • the Muse

actually mc same prob here…first week, amazing, second one tad chalky….blame your skin. That’s what happened with me, it was my skin causing havoc. be sure to be properly moist and prepped up well prior to use and you’ll get amazing flawless coverage but be a little lazy with your regime and you’ll look a hot chalky mess…at least that was the case for me 🙂

      • MC

Yeah, that was the same problem with me. I think the key is to get the stuff on right away after you prep and you have perfect coverage lol. I sporadically use it just so I don’t kick myself too much for buying it, but I tend to use Hello Flawless more…though I may switch to Some Kind of Gorgeous.

        • the Muse

*nods* yup mc. takes proper time and patience…I whip it on sometimes and end up looking scary as hell! Hello Flawless=LOVE 🙂 Noo don’t some kind of gorgeous is gross imho so greasy!

  • Beauty addict

I have to admit I don’t regret anything since I do not buy really expensive stuff and I actually think through if I really need anything that is a bit expensive for my budget. 😀

I was going to buy Lancome Pop n Petrol Palette, but after trying it, saw it wasn’t worth my money. I knew right then I would’ve regret it if I did bought it so I gave up.

And now that I think of, sometimes, but just *sometimes*, I feel a bit of remorse when I get a new blush since I have too many of them. 😀 Today I got benefit CORALista, but that was a present though I was planning on gettin it. Currently I’m still wanting NARS Orgasm and Oasis and I really hope those will be my last blushes. 😀

    • the Muse

      hey beauty addict!

Good on you! 😀 Oh my god you will so never regret your coralista purchase, it’s prob the thee most perfect coral ever and Orgasm is just as lovely 🙂

  • Stephanie Clifford

More soaps and bath products….I get a tad crazy when I buy Lush soaps or Etsy hauls…I have so many bars right now I just keep giving them away…but they are so cute! I am not going through all of the stuff that I already have but yet I buy more…

    • the Muse

I do same thing stephanie I stock pile Lush like it’s going out of business and etailers too! same same same here! Totally can relate!

  • Johanna

Bare Escentuals Prime Time Eyelid Primer. Sephora was out of my regular UDPP and the SA recommended Prime Time — said it’s better, eyeshadow lasts longer, etc. I found it to be very drying, thick, highlighted all my wrinkles. So, I took it back a few weeks later and exchanged it for the UDPP.

  • Gia

hmm I’ve been on a trying to save and finish some makeup before buying new things so i’m trying to be good.
But the one thing that really upset me was MAC Strobe Cream. After all the amazing reviews i have heard about this it really doesnt live up to the hype. It doesn’t give me the “glow” I thought it would.
Revlon’s ColorStay Foundation, everyone seems to love it! I hate it, it seems dry and I can’t find my right color. Darn drugstore foundation. I try to save and end up spending more trying to find the right fit. Grrrr

    • the Muse

gia I dunno mac strobe is so damn heavy which is why, thankfully, I never tried it. is that the photo ready one? b/c that stuff is dry as hell, agreed!

tell me ’bout it, same here. lol!

  • Nia

Viva Glam Gaga. I normally do not wear pinks as I think they are not me, but I thought I could venture out and try something new and got Gaga.
It looked good in the shop, but at home? Different story. At least it was for a good cause.
    But still, heavy buyers remorse.

    • the Muse

that’s totally understandable nia as viva glam gga was SO hard to wear. Hugs dear!

  • Renata

Yes, Muse, 6 in 1 (shills). I love it, and when I say ‘something is missing’ maybe I mean “my 20-year-old skin is missing” XD

Do you know this powder I mentioned, the MUFE shine on compact? I wonder… Not cheap! I’ll try and look for some reviews on this powder.

    :-*
