Beauty Abroad: The Skin Food Black Sesame Hot Mask Review

Hey chicklets!

Just a word to the wisest, Sasa has updated its Skin Food line up and ALOT of stuff is in stock at the moment and at reasonable prices. Granted, they aren’t retail by any means but way cheaper than E-bay that’s for shiz. Check it here.

A reader requested a review of the Skin Food Black Sesame Hot Mask a while back ago, sorry bit delayed here, and I’m checking getting around to it.

Jump ahead to hear it!

What is it?

The Skin Food Black Sesame Hot Mask a heating mask that opens up pores with salt, sugar, and black sesame.

The Good….

As with most Skin Food Masks I find I’m never disappointed. This is a rather fab little mask, not my favorite by any means but quite nice. It smells like a cross of dirt and peanut butter but try not to worry too much as the smell isn’t necessarily unpleasant simply earthy, believe me if it doesn’t bother me (I’m a nitpicker when it comes to smells), it probably won’t bother you. Its a thick, sticky gross looking mask that’s gray in color and very unappealing. To use it you simply apply to a damp face and massage on. Leave it on for 5 to 10 minutes and rinse. The mask basically softens skin and gently exfoliates leaving your face smoother and hydrated. I suggest following up with moisturizer after.

The Bad….

Honestly, appearance wise its not the prettiest mask around that’s for sure plus combined with its unusual smell you may want to skip. I was kinda disappointed that it doesn’t heat up all that much at all, I could barely feel it.

Who might like it?

  • Skin Food Mask fans.
  • Anyone who wants a gentle exfoliation to remove dry skin on their face.

Who might not like?

  • Folks that are sensitive to smell and the looks of a product.
  • Anyone who thinks this is going to do a super great job of cleaning out their pores (it probably won’t).

Final Thoughts…..

As I mentioned above I generally like Skin Food masks and I enjoyed using this one. I don’t have an exfoliating mask from the line so on occasion when my skin is busy being dry and flaky this comes in handy however its not my favorite Skin Food Mask by any means. Quite nice but I wouldn’t trip all over myself to repurchase it as I have a few other Skin Food Masks that I like way better.

Anyone try?

Fav Skin Food Masks?

Which ones?

This is available from Sasa for $12.90 which is about 50% marked up from its original price however still the best deal on the Internet if you’re not wanting to go through E-bay.

I totally agree with you on this review. I have the mask as well because it doesn’t do much for me. I don’t even notice that it heats up. The smell is quite odd. I love sesame but it’s more or less like a fake plastic sesame smell that lingers. You definitely need to make sure you wash this mask thoroughly or else you will smell it. Once some of the mask got stuck in my hairline and as I was running my hands through my hair in the morning, I noticed this odd smell. It was the mask -_-

    Great review as always 🙂

  • Melissa

hi ya Your thoughts mimic mine on this one. I could of sworn that I read it was a heating warming type mask. Mine didn’t heat at all. I liked it but was glad I got a deal on fleabay.

  • makeup

Sounds good to me…food for the skin and why not…every skin needs pampering to glow and shine and this is a good pack with the necessary basics.

  • Jiniya

Oooh, I’ve wanted to try this, but I’m a little disappointed to hear it doesn’t heat up all that much! I personally like Black Sugar Mask Wash-Off. Oh my goodness, made my skin incredibly soft and the smell isn’t too bad! I only had a sample.. I need more. 🙁

“It smells like a cross of dirt and peanut butter…Honestly, appearance wise its not the prettiest mask around that’s for sure plus combined with its unusual smell you may want to skip.”

That’s pretty much what black sesame smells and always looks like. 😀
Imagine the traditional asian desserts with black sesame filling…the stuff OOZES it and it would be creepy if it weren’t so delicious in my sweet soup…

    • the Muse

hey sesame! 😀 I can’t stand black sesame in anything, completely chokes me up. Love Asian food but NOT sesame 😀

  • plue

i actually love this! brightens the face pretty alot! and i love the black sesame sell actually. My granny used to make black sesame “soup” (really thick stuff and it’s a kind of chinese desert) that they say if u consume it consistently, your get really dark hair and i know it does help in beautifying the skin too, but can’t remember how does it help though.

    • the Muse

hey little sis black sesame is my least fav Asian food/dessert 😀 haha! It does do well at brightening up and refreshing tired skin but was disappointed that it didn’t heat up sigh!

  • aquahartz

hmm.. i’ve been wanting to try this mask for a while. thanks for the review, muse.

so it doesnt really heat up ey? how does it feel on ur skin after u’ve washed it off?
i kinda have a feeling that i might be able to bear with the smell, if i ever buy it.

    cheers 🙂

    • the Muse

hi aqua sadly nope not heating. Skin feels hydrated after use 😀

  • Stephanie

It looks like Oreo pudding! Too bad it didn’t smell like it too.

  • jamie

awww i’m sorry you didnt like it 🙁 i really really liked this mask! honestly, i’m with you that it doesn’t heat up much (if at all) but i use this one as a scrub and it gives me the nicest feel after i use it! My skin doesn’t feel tight at all and its ideal for the days i dont want to have any skincare at all on my face to give it some rest 🙂
being an asian i’m not thrown off by the smell. in fact, its quite yummy if you know the taste/smell of REAL sesame paste hehe. but certainly its an acquired taste 😉

    • the Muse

jamie that’s a fab way to use it 😀 hated it didn’t heat up though sigh! I don’t like sesame paste at all prob why I’m not so into the smell 🙁 doesn’t bother me really but just not a sesame paste fan 😀

Best seller mask from Skin Food.

@banana – smells really like banana, absorbs fast n leaves u moist n really smooth skin
@aloe – smells like perfume (not aloe), but there’s like aloe crumbs in it (don’t know d right word 2 describe). absorbs fast n leaves u smooth, white, fresh skin n moist (but banana is better)
@cucumber – similiar wiht aloe but aloe is better
@cheese – smells isn’t like cheese. First time tried, it’s like oil. after rinse off it feels smooth n moist (d moist feels better than banana)
@papaya – d resluts r similiar with banana but banana smells yummy, more than papaya
@kiwi – similiar with banana n papaya, but kiwi is better than papaya
    @potato – not reccommended
@blacksesame – smells not good 4 me but good enough for d skin
@sleeping mask – feels like night cream. use it for 2 weeks but feels nothing

I got many samples of this product along with my latest Skin Food purchase. This is the first Skin Food mask I tried and I’m exceptionally pleased with the results. I thought the heating sensation was nice, though brief, and didn’t feel like chemical warfare was being waged on my face. I normally have both dry skin AND large ugly pores. This product seemed to address both problems in one fair swoop. I can’t say if it was this or my new BB cream, but a coworker even commented on how pretty I look.

If this is the result of a lackluster SF product, I definitely want to check out the good stuff.

PS. I totally wanted to nom nom nom all up on my face when I was wearing it too.

    • the Muse

hi dorkothy so glad you’re enjoying skinfood. great brand 😀

  • Yu Fen

Well recently I found out about it so I'm curious in what product I should use for my oily, acne and kind of dark skin because of it. Also I live in NYC and when is winter my skin tend to be dry, I want to look something from Skin Food to help me? I want to prepare for the winter[always too late to start T_T]

    • the Muse

      hi lane/yu fen.

you asked this in two comments so just going to reply to the one.

I really don’t know the best masks for oily/acne skin. You can check the skin food site and see what might work. Sadly my skin is normally dry or combo in the Summer so what works for me prob won’t be good for you. I don’t really look around for oily/acne masks as I’m normally shopping for my own skin type 🙂 It’s rather simply to just load up the skin food site and see what is best suited for your skin type since the site groups things into skin types and problems. The Singapore site is in English as well which is helpful.

      Hope this helps!

      Cheers!

I haven’t tried this mask personally but it is very popular! Personally I prefer Innisfree masks to Skin Fd 🙂 Although Skin Fd packaging is SOOO pretty!

  • lin

I’ve never tried any SF products but I would make this my first, I love sesame and I love weird stinky earthy smells, haha!
