Josie Maran Magic Marker Lip & Cheek Stain Review and Swatches

Oh baby lip markers are SO in this season! Damn! They are poppin’ up everywhere aren’t they? Guess who has one now? Josie Maran!

Check it!

What is it?

The Josie Maran Magic Marker Lip & Cheek Stain is available in six shades and can be applied on lips or cheeks with the felt tip applicator for long wearing color all day. The formula has a blend of Hylronic Acid and sugar extracts to smooth and plump lips for a sexy pout. It’s green friendly makeup that’s formulated without parabens, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances.

The Good….

Whoa Nelly! This bad boy isn’t going anywhere once applied. Holy cow it stains something fierce. Seriously, if you want 24 hour lip coverage this is your go to product. Eat, drink, chew on a stick of dynamite…this isn’t going ANYWHERE until you take it off and even when you do remove it, you may still see it sticking around for a little while. I used it on my lips and proceeded to swatch on my arm and after removing with eye makeup remover my lips and arm still had a faint touch of color. Shiz! The color I tried was Flamenco a super duper cherry red, users beware you will look you had a sip of Kool Aid or ate a cherry ice pop after using this shade. Surprising little fact about these stains is the fact that they wear so long without drying lips out. I had a rather crummy experience with MAC’s version and dry grossness going on with my lips but these do not suffer the same faith. They are light wearing on the lips and don’t dry lips out.

The Bad….

Don’t use ’em on your cheeks as they are a pain in the butt to blend out plus the applicator design makes it difficult to apply color. The long wear time is super but be prepared to remove it with an oil based eye makeup remover as its NOT coming off unless you take sometime out to take it off plus you experience temporary staining even after having a wash up. The price is $19 which is more expensive than both CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain and MAC Pro Longwear Lipstain Marker but………..I’m disregarding the price on this one since Josie’s version out beats both Cover and MAC in terms of incredible wear time.

Who might like it?

  • Chicks who dig on not having to apply and reapply lipstick and lipgloss!
  • Anyone who wants incredibly long wearing lip color without drying their lips out.
  • Anyone who desires a “green” friendly formula!

Who might not love it?

  • Anyone who doesn’t love the idea of a product that temporarily stains lips and cheeks!
  • Anyone who isn’t interested in removing lip makeup with eye makeup remover.

Final Thoughts….

Overall, quite a nice product however I will throw out there that Flamenco was way to red on my lips. It’s really an outrageous bright red that made me look like a clown. Aside from this I’m thinking its a rather great product on a whole. I admit that Covergirl’s version is 65% less in terms of cost and MAC is even cheaper but the long wear time makes up for the larger price tag. These are really fab if you find it annoying or bothersome to apply and reapply gloss and lipstick ever couple of hours. You won’t suffer the same faith with this stain as once its on, its ON. Definitely not going anywhere, anytime soon.

Anyone try?

I have yet to try a lip marker. I should just go buy one of CG’s and get it over with so I can stop wondering if I’ll like it. Any shade suggestions?

    • the Muse

kristina ANY of CG shades are good because they are all pigmented in a way that they flatter most skin tones. They aren’t overly done and they show up so nicely 😀 wait for a BOGO to indulge though ;-D

It seems everybody is jumping on the Lip Stain in a marker form! One of the big supermarket chains here in Canada (Loblaws) has a makeup line now! And the lip stains are a GREAT price ($6 a marker!), and the reviews are really good. I think i’m going to try that, and then splurge for this one. :] Lip stains are my new obsession! The Sephora brand lip/cheek stain looks good too. The CG one i’m not so sure about..

big time tohnia, beauty trend alert 😀 tell us how those are 😀 curious! CG is not bad at all tbh!

Oh I saw these at Sephora a few days ago. I had one in my basket but then changed my mind. I might have to go back and get one now! 😀

“Eat, drink, chew on a stick of dynamite…this isn’t going ANYWHERE…” Favorite line ever! LOL!

Quick question. I am always applying gloss b/c I hate feeling like my lips are dry. Does this stain come off if gloss is applied over it?

    • the Muse

nope tory won’t come off when gloss is applies on top 🙂

I really like the Josie Maran Magic Marker lip stain – figured out that it wouldn’t be so great on the checks so that isn’t really a problem. My question is is there is sharpener or extender like there is on actual lipstick, because it seems as if it will only last as long as the original marker. Thanks for the help. Maybe I’m just missing something that will extend it.
