Project Combat Oily Skin: Urban Decay De-Slick In a Tube Review and Swatches

So you got oily skin….poor you.

I only deal with oily skin when the warm weather comes a callin’ but let me tell you I feel for those of you who struggle with it daily, horror!

I tried out the new Urban Decay De-Slick In a Tube and I gotta say it might be HG (holy grail) for oily skin girls far and wide, bloody fine stuff!

Check it after the jump!

I gotta say this is unlike any facial primer I’ve tried before. It’s a lightweight gel that has a very unusual texture and feel. It’s going to be a little difficult to describe this but let’s see…

It doesn’t feel silicon-like at all but has more of lightweight formula that doesn’t pill (roll off your face in tiny balls) or flake. The gels smooths onto your skin and instantly reduces shine and oil. As you apply you won’t feel it becoming powdery upon dry down as in my experience most primers with silicons have a powdery finish. This leans towards feeling like a super soft clay with a hydrating finish but don’t let that fool you as even though it feels slightly moist, it still manages to completely eliminate oil and shine. I wore it on two very warm days and it stuck around on my face for around 8 hours of wear and towards the end of the 8th hour I needed to blot my forehead a little bit. It’s probably one of the longest wearing primers I own.

It’s supposedly formulated to tighten pores but I don’t have larger pores so I couldn’t say for sure. It does create a very smooth working canvas for make up and doesn’t feel as strange as silicon primers normally feel on my face nor does it break me out or make me want to itch, again this is the effect on silicon primers on my skin.

I wish I could describe it a bit better but it’s really something you need to try to understand fully. I will say I was rather majorly impressed with it. The only thing that I was disappointed with was the $28 price tag for such a tiny tube but I can see this becoming something I repurchase again and again as it works and that for me is priceless.

If you have a really serious problem with oily, shiny skin I highly suggest checking out Urban Decay De-Slick In a Tube. I have a feeling it’ll take over pretty much any other primer you currently use and love.

I could fairly guarantee this will be a new cult favorite for Urban Decay a la Primer Potion.

it wasn’t on my wishlist until now… thanks Muse for the review… sounds like something I have to have for this summer 🙂

  • Gemma

Cant wait to try this i have oily skin and large pores and i have tried everything out there. Hopefully it will hit the UK soon.

    • the Muse

GEMMAAAAAAAAA! hi! how are you? Long time no speak 😀 Hope you’re well!

I hope UK gets it soon too, I imagine it’ll hit your side of the pond soon enough!

  • Hazel

Ahhh thanks for the review! I am thinking of getting this. I wonder if the spray is also worth getting!

    • the Muse

hey hazel! 😀 I just ordered them, very curious about the mists myself!

  • Angel

Muse! I just ordered this (and a crapload of other stuff) at the UD website yesterday with the 30% off coupon! I can’t wait to try it out! =D

    • the Muse

00000000000000000000w000000000t angel tell me everything, whatcha get? I ordered the four mists yesterday and the new 24/7 liner shade! 😀

      • Angel

besides the de-slick, i also got the oil control spray, and the nail polish set (omg!!!!!). BUT they were so lame and told me that since nail polishes are hazardous materials they can’t airmail my stuff to me in california; they have to ground ship it instead and for free ground shipping i need $100 minimum! >.< SO! i threw in two boxes of 24/7 super stash HAHAHAHAHHA. nothing and no one shall come between me and free shipping! =D the new eldorado color is actually in a mini size in the super stash, muse, did you know?! so…it shall be my trial size. =)

        • the Muse

lol angel before foil for hauling more wasn’t it?! 😀 ya I did! but sadly I didn’t haul SS damn! So I’m glad to have it 😀 nice hauling though..I wish I was nail girl…because those colors look so joyous for Sum!

          Enjoy angel! 😀

          • Angel

aww! well, i’m not sure how i feel about SS cuz…frankly i’m not a mini-anything girl; i like big full sizes! =D but it has all these interesting colors and so i was like, what they hey i’ll just throw it in the cart haha.

i’m actually not a nail girl much either! but…those colors really look adorable and i couldn’t resist, therefore i’d rather buy an extra $50 worth of stuff for free ground shipping than to give up this set! =P

          • the Muse

lol nice hauling angel 😀 sounds like a plan to me! enjoy!

  • Kiera

    Hi Muse!

I love the idea of this product since I have somewhat oily skin and I really liked the original De-Slick. But your review got me thinking… is this supposed to act as a primer? or is just one of those things that it just “also happens to help with”, because I really like my UD Pore Perfecting and I wouldn’t want to abandon it 🙁 . Secondly would you happen to know if its already available on actual Sephora’s? Since the web page says ONLINE ONLY…

PS.: I’m anxiously waiting your review on the Urban Defense Tinted Moisturizers! Please pretty please, do one!

    • the Muse

      hey kiera what’s up babe

I liked the original deslick as well, it still resides in my purse since I got it for touch ups on the go! mm that’s a good question. It’s a prep and prime for oily skin so yes it acts as a primer and those with larger pores might notice it fills them, I’m not sure though as I don’t have super big pores sadly. Not yet babe but perhaps May I believe UD recently tweeted. I’d get it online if possible as it’s 30% at the moment, so can’t beat the price.

I’ll def do one 😀 promise, the TM’s are awesome btw!

  • Norlyn

Hmm… I haven’t had a ton of luck with primers, although I guess I haven’t tried that many. I’ve been sticking to Bare Escentuals primer, but I may have to give this one a try as well!

    • the Muse

hey norlyn! aw sorry to hear it hun! 🙁 def let me know whatcha think if you do give it a whirl!

  • Su

I am going to give this a try after finishing sana primer ( if it is available in boots )
I seriously need primer for summer T.T

  • Dinae

I really want this product. I wanted to get it in the spray version… any thoughts on that product?

    • the Muse

hi dinae haven’t tried it yet but will update when I do hun

  • Marlie

I can’t wait to get my hands on this! I cursed with oily/sensitive skin and am searching for the perfect mattifying primer! I don’t typically order cosmetics online, but there isn’t a Sephora in my small Canadian town and I’m just not sure I can wait to get to Sephora! Keep up the good work on your great blog!

    • the Muse

aw thanks marlie surely will try to keep up the great work *hugs*

It’s quite good, think you’ll love it hun! Good luck finding it in Canada hun!

  • jonnie

I placed my UD order last night… I ended up getting All-Nighter, Deluxe Eyeshadow in Honey, a blender brush, tinted moisturizer (not sure I got the right shade though… only having four choices kind of threw me off), and a new primer potion. Now I’m asking myself why I didn’t get the Angel moisturizer too, since I wanted it… sigh. Well, guess I can always do another order!

    • the Muse

sweet haulin’ jonnie! you can always go back for a 2nd haul hehe I’m thinking about it as I want some UD lipsticks!

      • jonnie

Yah, I’m definitely considering another haul. After the Alice shadow box I don’t really need more shadows right now though (the Honey was justified because I don’t have anything even remotely like it 😉 ). I was kind of wanting a couple Lipstick Queen lippies so I don’t really want to also buy UD right now. I was considering another Pocket Rocket but I’m not sure which one. Same with the Razor Sharp powder… not sure if it’s really something I’ll use. I’ve noticed the older I get the less I want the powder finished look… it makes me feel like my skin looks older. I dunno. I could always get more Brightening Primer (I got it last fall when it came out and I really like it) but I was thinking of trying the Korres Quercitin (sp?) and Oak primer, and I don’t need both. (I can totally justify all the makeup I have because to me it’s like being a kid with lots of crayons – what was cooler, the 8-count box or the 64-count box? 🙂 – but primer isn’t really the same…) I know you did a review of the Korres one; between the two, which do you think is better?

  • kristen

reminds me very much of a product i discovered in Sallys recently called OCEight. It looks the same and sounds like it acts exactly the same!
OC Eight looks like they came out with this type of product first, looks like urban Decay have copied them…
    http://www.oc8.co.uk/

  • kristen

Meant to also say, id be interested to compare the two to see which works best as i have very Oily skin which is a nightmare during the summer.

      • kristen

thats bizarre, my previous post didnt post!
I was referring to OC Eight, which looks exactly like this UD product and sounds like it works exactly the same. I have bad oily skin especially in the summer with my makeup just disapearing on my forehead and nose. I’d like to compare the two to see which works better as so far i love O C Eight!
I bought OC Eight in Sallys when i visited it last.

  • Miss Molly

I just ordered this in UD F&F order, but I accidentally had my stuff shipped to my dad. I also got the Summer of Love palette and the 24-7 set that has Mildew. I’ve had a crappy day. 🙁

    • the Muse

hey miss molly why the crappy day hun *hugs*

aw….is that a bad thing? can you go pick it up from him?

  • Steph

Muse, did you see UD’s De Slick makeup setting spray? It’s 4.0 oz and costs a dollar more than their new mattifying gel (both products target oily skin) but it can be used to set eye and lip makeup as well!

  • Miss Molly

My parents live just across town from me so it won’t be a problem. He’ll just wonder why someone sent him makeup.
Thanks for the e-hug. I found out today that I won’t be graduating this semester even though my adviser said that I would be. It sucks.

    • the Muse

lol and maybe he’ll enjoy it Molly 😀 after all who doesn’t love a little UD

I’m sorry hun *hugs* that stinks 🙁 But don’t rush school 😀 hells I wish I was back myself 😀

  • Tiff

Is it really, really disgusting for me to say that the second picture totally looks like a HUGE version of the blackheads that you pull out of nose strips?

    • the Muse

tiff you kinda lost me here….the second photo is a tube of de-slick, how does it look like blackheads?

      • dangster

I think she’s referring to the 3rd photo, which does look like the gunk that shows up on pore strips, except like 100x magnified 😉

        • the Muse

the back of my arm looks like the gunk that shows up on pore strips dangster?! LOL

          • Tiff

Oh lol i’m so sorry! I meant the picture of the back of your hand (third picture, I can’t count! thanks dangster!) where you’ve got the product squeezed and how it’s still solid and white and blaaargh. It looks like those things you pull out from the pore strip except magnified 10million times.

I’ve probably like scared everyone to death from using this now lol…

  • Gemma

Lol i don’t understand where it looks like blackheads?? lol
Hope you review some of the other new urban decay stuff.
I just brought the razor sharp powder i don’t like it much. The mac prep and prime is 100 % better,

    • the Muse

I’m really lost on that one Gemma 😀 lol fill me in I wanna laugh too! 😀

surely will Summa of Love palette coming up shortly dear girl! really? Umm..I felt like they were to different products in a way. I like mac prep and prime under my eyes a little bit and razor sharp all over my face.

  • Gemma

Well iv only tried it once since buying, i was put off by the big puff thing. have you taken the puff off?

    • the Muse

oh take it off. it was ok first few tries but it started to annoy me so now I use a blending brush (as in a eye one) and I stroke it under my eyes down the bridges of my nose, anywhere I want a little pick up! Works a treat!

The puff was MASSIVE and not as soft as surreal skins…it was nice at first but I got annoyed with it fast!

  • restlessly

Looks good… Is the texture the same as the SANA Pore Putty?

  • Gia

Ehh I have dry skin so this might be a no-go for me. Have you tired Urban Decay’s Brightening Complexion Primer Potion?? I swear it made my makeup look worst and last shorter. Have you tried the fix sprays yet? I’ve been waiting for someone to review them!

    • the Muse

not yet gia but waiting on the sprays to come my way shortly as I ordered them last week. I liked the brightening complex alot….sorry to hear it didn’t work so well 🙁 for you!

  • Leelee

I just went to Ulta today, but I didn’t see this there! I really want to try it because my T-zone (especially my nose) gets so greasy that it starts to flake! Crazy right?! It may be because my skin is just super dehydrated….must drink more water!

Anyways, I really wish they could lower the price of that tiny tube; I’m a high school junior with no job or allowance money to buy beauty products — and I need them to look half decent, haha. DX

    • the Muse

hey leelee summer 2010 was released on UD first and should appear elsewhere in May hun 😀 or towards the end of the month! they are having 30% off everything on UD at the moment if that’s any help doll!

  • Gemma

lol my puff turned the same colour as my foundation, and didnt look very nice, i will try and dismantle the thing then.

  • Rosie

Yay I was waiting for a review of this that I could trust! Thanks a bunch now I won’t hesitate to order it during FF.

  • Mrs. Budz

I came across your website when I typed in “Urban Decay Primer + reviews” on google.com . I’m going to keep you in my Favorites folder. I would like to try UD De-slick – my face is oily daily, and I’m tired of the shine. :*( I bought Stay, Don’t Stray after reading your review. Thanks!

    • the Muse

hello mrs budz good to meet you! aw thanks I look forward to seeing you return 🙂 you’ll like deslick quite well done. Aw that’s fab how do you like it so far?
