Reader’s Request: Maybelline Pure Mineral BB Base

Ahhh BB Cream. It’s the heart of my coverage existence dontcha know. I promised myself that when I finally got around to writing a review for you on the Maybelline Pure Mineral BB Base I would NOT get into the politics of what a BB Cream is, why it’s wonderful, etc….

Im going to keep that promise because we will be here all day if I get into a mega discussion about BB Cream. Allow me to direct you to my “what is a BB Cream?” post from several months ago for a brief introduction in the vast world of BB.

Now on with the review of the Maybelline Pure Mineral BB Base!

Jump!

What is it?

Maybelline Pure Mineral BB Base is a primer of sorts and a base, I know quite confusing but yes it can be used to prep and used as a foundation/base product. It has a formula thats blended with eight kinds of minerals such as copper, zinc, sodium, titanium, and more….these natural minerals are supposed to enhance your skin condition. The general idea of the product is it can be uses a primer before foundation or as a foundation itself for lighter coverage.

The Good…

Its quite good acting as a really fresh base for makeup. It has a thin consistency and isnt highly pigmented but still manages to even out skin tone and freshen up dull skin making it a nice quickie foundation when you arent up for applying something heavier. The added benefit of SPF 26 is a nice little plus. The color is a universal shade however I felt it was a little too light to be worn alone but looks quite good under foundation so its a nice prep that offers extra SPF to my makeup application. I dont really love silicon based primers so this acts perfect as a hydrating prep for my base makeup. Below the circle shows where the base was blended in and outside circle is my normal skin sans the base.

The Bad…

The universal shade will likely NOT suit most skin tones sadly. Its made for the Japanese market and even the universal Asian undertones will probably feels its way too light. It obviously doesnt come in further shades since its exclusive to Asia so sadly you cant go with the next darker shade as its a one color fits all kinda of shade. The shade falls into the realms of porcelain which is an odd choice for the Asian market. Ive seen it online for a reasonable price but it is available within Asia in most cases so its not something you can head to the drugstore to purchase again once you run low.

Who might not like it?

  • Those who want lighter coverage with the added benefit of an SPF.
  • Anyone with certain dullness that needs some freshening up.
  • Anyone who has very light skin and cant find a good base product that works well with their tone.
  • Anyone who doesnt mind taking their coverage color a step down or two and desires “whiter” skin.
  • Asian women who want to tone down yellow undertones.

Who might not like it?

  • Anyone who doesnt really understand or appreciate the idea of whiter skin that the Asian market embraces.
  • Anyone who really isnt into a “universal” color product.

Final Thoughts….

I personally really like it. It successfully evens out my skin tone and erases dullness while freshening up my face and making it look more awake. These are all things I look for in base products and it successfully does all three. Sadly, the shade ran a little light for me but under a BB Cream it works quite well at giving my face a fresher look which is exactly what I desire when it comes to good base products. I probably wont purchase again unless they release a slightly darker shade (which probably wont happen) but the idea behind the product is great.

I got mine from Japan for $17 but Sasa has it available for a mere $12.60 if youre wanting it.

Its worth a haul for anyone with a lighter skin tone who has a harder time matching up base for their skin.

Nice but color is a tad bit of a problem for me and most anyone else who tries it.

ohhh interesting, i’ve been wondering about this for awhile!! did you know that lancome also came out with their BB cream? Can you do a review on it too? 🙂

  • Tinkerchelle

You know, I love it that you do reviews on these products from foreign markets. I would never have heard of this product otherwise, and I think it might be perfect for me. Half Irish/ half Cicillian heritage produced a Chelle that has pasty skin with odd undertones. Very hard to match. And, like you, I can’t do silicone primers. This sounds like exactly the thing I need to tame undertones that appear constantly at war with each other, LOL!

    • the Muse

      hey chelle!

Aw thanks I’m so glad you enjoy beauty abroad posts 😀 they are my favs and what Musings started on 😀

This would be great for you plus if you don’t need ALOT of coverage it’ll prove perfect for evening out your skin tone :_D

  • LINDARRAGNAR

ok I ttly love the whole whitening idea like I almost wanna die whenever i see those ski 2 ads :'( cuz kate blanchet looks so white and luminous 🙂

this stuff looks really nice especially for mabyeline. definitly going to check it out at sasa and then get those my diary face masks!!

why does every other country get such cool products?! 🙁

  • Comrade_Garlic

I’ve always wondered about this. It pops in and out of my Sasa basket all the time. The next order I may just get it.

  • Nikkiz.

Hi Muse! What a coincidence. I just bought my own tube of this over the weekend. I live in Manila and it’s available here at all Maybelline counters for Php299 or around $6-7 but it looks smaller than your tube. It also says “Fresh” on it and is in only 1 shade. I’m medium skin-toned and fortunately it matches me as it goes on a bit more sheer that it is easy to blend and match any skin tone. It does make the skin a lot brighter and even toned. Need to test it out some more.

    • ikhny

i just got mine earlier for only Php249 (around $5.52) in Mercury drugstore in commonwealth ave. i have yet to try it.

the shade is too light for me since i’m more on the morena side but i’ve learned how to apply it from using 2 other brands before.

hi sweetie. thanks for doing this review! in singapore, i see so so so many different types of BB cream, from sasa, watsons, skinfood, etude house etc. i didnt really know which one to buy until maybelline’s BB cream came out. so i got a bottle and try it out and i simple LOVE! the results. i have got pretty fair asian skin and this BB cream adds a shine and glow onto my face. moreover, my complexion became better after use. i’m so in love with this product that i carry it everywhere.

i was in Thailand, Phuket and i saw that its selling over there for less than half of Singapore’s price! me and my friend quickly got a total of 8 bottles! ahahha!!

  • Kahani

Muse darling, will you do me a favour and see if “dimthicone” is anywhere on the ingredients list? (unless the thing’s in Japanese). I break out if the stuff’s present.

    • the Muse

it’s in Japanese kahani sorry hun. I don’t recognize and read VERY few characters sorry 🙁

    • ikhny

I’m not sure if the product above is the same with what I bought because it says “Clear Smooth” in mine instead of “PURE.BB”.

You are asking if there is Dimethicone right?

      Clear Smooth has:
      > Dimethicone
      > PEG- 9 Polydimethylsiloxy-ethyl Dimethicone
      > Dimethicone/Polyglycerin-3 Crospolymer

  • Stel

Wow this actually looks nice, I’ve tried Skin79 and it looks a bit ashy, this looks yellow like my skin tone. Thanks for another great review!

    • the Muse

mmm yes stel skin79 is notorious for applying slightly ashy I love it but def gives a gray undertone 😛 my pleasure!

  • Lilly

    Hey Musey!

I have some exciting news for you! Have you seen that Maybelline launched a new brand in Germany called MNY? Its so funky and cool! You are going to love it. You need to post about it! I want them to bring it to the US!
Thanks for all your great posts! I do not know where I would be in the makeup world without them! If you have time email me back. I wanna know what you think!

    wwww.mny.com

    • the Muse

hi lily I seen! I was hoping it would release in the Netherlands as it would be easier for me to get a hold of. It looks darlin’! I’m absolutely thrilled with how cute they made the packaging and the colors look fab!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      😀

Aw thank you lilly *hugs* you’re lovely!

  • Christina

Hey! Does the Maybelline BB base have the “mattifying” effect? Or is Etude better? Thanks!

Thank you for your posting this up!!

    • the Muse

neither one christina they leave more of a dewy finish, hope this helps!

  • Tiffany

BB cream are huge in Asia…seriously. They have everything from caviar BB
cream to sparkling ones. For me they’re very convenient and quite affordable.

    • the Muse

yup tiffany for sure particularly korea 🙂 I have over 50 bb creams I’ve tried 😛 crazy selection they have in Korea phew!

  • Sierra

Hey, just asking, if I want to use BB cream, then do I still have to use a foundation and setting powder??? Or just BB cream+setting powder??? Thanks!

    • the Muse

bb cream is your foundation however this is a BB Base/primer so you need either a foundation or a BB cream to follow up with when using this if you need more coverage.

  • Connie

I want to try the Maybelline BB creams, but since it’s a drugstore product here I just can’t justify paying like $30 for it on Ebay -_-
Also, just to let you know, it says “who might NOT like it” on both lists on the bottom

  • peixuan

hey muse! this bb cream is good in the way after you put on (im an Asian so it looks good on me) it makes you look brighter. However, it doesnt really conceals much and turns abit greyish after long wear. and also fades.

  • ayshafaheem

heyy. . .this bb cream come in three different textures i.e. moist, moisturizing, and the shiny one. and i cant find out which should match which kind of skin, because i am a beginner to makeup.
