Musings of the Day: Have You Hit Pan?

Ahhh the voyage of hitting pan. I don’t think I’ve actually taken the full trip myself. Hitting pan on any cosmetic is probably pretty much a myth around these parts and if I ever did hit pan it would probably be a super legendary feat.

Wanna muse hitting pan with me?

Have you hit pan on any of your favorite powders, shadows, or other products?

Not so much?

Jump ahead to hear about a product I recently hit pan on!

This is epic!

Seriously, I have WAY too much stuff and even my favorite items rarely see the shiny gleam of silver pan at the end of a long use….

It just doesn’t happen that much.

I once hit pan, very long ago, on a Benefit Lemon Aid and I celebrated soon after with champs and cupcakes.

But…hasn’t happened in a while, until fairly recently.

It’s time for a new celebration as this week I am bearing the end of Maybelline Dream Mousse Concealer. Cue the music, get out the confetti, pop the cork on that bottle of bubbly! This shiz don’t happen too often we might as well party on about it!

Now it’s your turn…

What have you hit pan on recently?

Or have you ever?

Share it!

I’ve “hit pan” recently on two face powders- My Mac Studio Fix & L’oreal True Match Super Blendable Powder. Also on my Boi-ing concealer, I’m trying to get the last of it which is in a thin ring around the sides of the compact, lol. I think it’s time to replace, probably!

    • the Muse

omg lorraine I forgot about boi-ing I def hit pain on it a few times 😀

  • Johanna

It’s a really great feeling when I come to the end of a cosmetic product — makes me feel not so wasteful. I have recently hit pan on the following products: Mac Blot powder, Nars Torrid blush, Philosophy Supernatural Airbrushed Foundation, TheBalm TimeBalm Concealor.

  • Resa

I’ve only ever hit pan on my first eyeshadow duo from Merle Norman! Now, I’ve started to make a dent in my Benefit Hello Flawless! Maybe over the summer in NYC, it’ll happen!

  • Marilyn @ Lipgloss and Spandex

I hit pan on a Sephora powder foundation recently!

  • mercedes

dont forget you also hit pan on phycians formula multi-colored powder pallete! og god yes i have hit pan….on everything i own actually. But i dont mind buying backups, and besides who knows what kind of germs are lurking on that dior l/s?!

    • the Muse

omg mercedes I hit pan on that ALL the time 😀 Loves it!

  • CucumPear

Recently? Nothing at all. I remember completely using up my first shimmery beige eyeshadow when I was a teenager and over the years I’ve hit the pan a few times.
These days I have enough make-up that creamy products need to be tossed long before that point. Powdery products just last and last for me. It takes me years to use up compact powder, I tend to get sick of these products at some point or I discover something better. Having said that, I still have that nigh-empty battered Rimmel compact I bought in Dublin… in 2001.
In conclusion: I’m seriously bad at using up my make-up (and I really need to bin that ancient LemonAid and Boi-ing).

  • natalie_sod

yeah! i’ve hit pan on my blot powder. i kid you not i sometimes open the compact just to look at it and it makes me smile that FINALLY I’VE HIT PAN. what you thought impossible. hahahaha.

  • Miss Molly

I hit pan on theBalm’s Sexy Mama! In fact, I’m almost out. It’s hard to get on my brush now. That’s why I want the new Hard Candy matte powder.

  • knownever

I NEVER hit pan on things. sometimes i finish lip products but even that is rare. i’ve been really trying to make a concerted effort on some blushes and bronzers though….no where near it…

  • Valerie

I hit the pan on my Hello, Flawless! Of course this probably doesn’t count because I happened to hit the pan when one of my best friends ever dropped my compact and totally shattered all the powder. So uh… I hit a lot of pan.

    • the Muse

LOL valerie 😀 if it was only that easy than I’d say that I hit pan ALOT or my bathroom floor hits pan a ton 😀

  • gwen

n.y.c. smooth skin pressed powder….the only powder that doesn’t look chalky on me….love it!

  • LINDARRAGNAR

lol congratulations muse!!!!!! that concealer must be fanatastic ( need to get it )

hit pan on bodyshop powder and I’m not going to buy it again. 😀

  • Melissa

I have hit the pan on foundation and powder products from Chanel, Mac, and Laura Geller. I have used up eyeliners before too. I have too many of any other kind of product to use it up spare an occasional lip gloss.

  • Tango

I just finished off my Physician’s Formula mosaic translucent powder– but I always seem to hit the pan on powders since even on a ‘no makeup’ day I find myself reaching for some.

  • Kiera

Oh… I’ve hit pan a couple of times… its a sort of masochist pleasure for me I guess LOL (sort of like when you pick on your scabs… ok… so maybe not the best comparison)… but when I hit pan for some odd reason I feel the need to use that product more and thus reveal more of that shiny metal that lies beneath the surface (talk about issues!)…

Anyways… I guess my most recent pan hits are a Burt’s Bees Bee’s Wax Lip Balm tin I had and also my second Benefit’s Dandelion and of course my Hello Flawless from Benefit also.

  • Lucky

Don’t recall ever ‘hitting the pan’ on a powder or creme product, though I have gone through several bottles/jars of primer, foundation and moisturizing lotion (I suppose that would be considered ‘hitting the bottle’, instead).

  • Betty

hahaha I love your humor. I’ve only hit the pan once and it was a Too Faced blush. I’m starting to make a dent in my 2nd Too Faced blush. I guess I love their blushes very much. lol.

  • DivaShop

I’ve just barely hit pan in my Physician’s Formula Mineral Wear Mineral Face Powder.

  • Carolanne

omg! I just hit pan on that SAME ITEM! of course, different shade, but still! My Maybelline Dream Mouse concealer is the first thing in a loooooooooong time for me to hit pan on. How exciting! And coincidental! =D

  • jackieg02

MAC Dazzlelight eyeshadow and MAC Rite of Spring eyeshadow. I use either of those daily.

    • jackieg02

I did feel a great accomplishment when I saw the silver pan!!!

      • the Muse

LOL I feel the same way jackie like I’ve struck gold or accomplished some major feat

  • Brooke

The only thing I have hit the pan on is one of my MAC powders.
I told myself in December that one of my resolutions was going to be to use up at least one makeup product before I bought another. Needless to say, that resolution, along with multiple others fell through 🙂

  • Brittany

I’ve hit pan on MAC ricepaper and MakeupForever Duo Mat Powder Foundation – although what the hell?! I didn’t think I used it that much. I just don’t think there was that much in there to begin with ; /

  • krystin

i’ve hit about 6 pans on mac’s naked lunch eyeshadow in just the past 2
or 3 years alone!! i looooooooooooooove this eyeshadow i use it as an
allover base color. it has just the perfect amount of shimmer for a highlight
on browbone and inner eye. i dont know what i would do if the stopped
making it i already have to have at least 2 back ups at all times!! i used to
use wishful but it was discontinued so i tried naked lunch and i loved it a
million times more!!! so yeah i’ve hit pan many times

  • angela

hmm i hit pan on my Milani face powder, but only because I dropped it on the floor and the powder broke into pieces 🙁

  • Marcy

I have hit pan twice with MAC pressed blot, in fact the first time I COMPLETELY FINISHED it! was so pleased 😀 Just hit pan on my second one. I think I have hit pan once with blush back in my non-addiction days. And I try to use up foundation. Other than that…. lol

  • thatgal

Yep! I did it! With my Benfit “10” powder box, I was sooo used to it that did even more – I crashed what’s stayed on bottom of the box with end of the brush to use it like loose highlighting powder. See, “hitting the pan” happens more frequently with exactly Benefit products (God save them!).
And I used 3 (can’t believe it!) Guerlain Parure Gold powder refills.

BTW: it’s my first comment in your blog;) Like reading you much! Very-very nice to meet you:)

    • the Muse

hi thatgal nice to meet you! *hugs*

damn!!!!!!!!!!! three gold powder refills? sweet 😀 I always feel like benefit powders are WAY big and I’ll never hit the bottom!

      • thatgal

They are, but “Hello flawless” is so bloody good that I’m sure it could take Parure over, hehe)))

        • the Muse

god thatgal couldn’t agree more hello flawless=AWESOME!

  • Ashley

I’ve never hit pan on anything but then again, I don’t wear make up most of the time. Most of my make up are “collectibles” to me =)

    • the Muse

ashley mine too…but I’m kinda using stuff lately since I have WAY too much lol!

  • Ally_D

I don’t think I’ve ever hit pan on anything. I start to panic if I think I’m running out of something so I either rush out and buy another one and then never get around to finishing the first one or I ration myself to make it last longer.

I love my azalea blossom blush ombre but I only have one so I rarely use it in case I run out. I’m crazy!

  • Jo

My bourjois powder and the highlight eyeshadow shade in Benefit Smokin’ Eyes = excuse to go out and buy lots of highlight shadows to help me get over it!

  • Marina

A long time ago I hit the pan on my MAC Juxt shadow. I don’t see how…I can’t remember using it very often, lol! I’ve also hit the pan on my Mary Kay shadow in Moonstone. It’s a great neutral, so I used to use it often. Also have hit pan on Lancome’s shadow in Personal Style…I don’t use it as often nowadays because I don’t like how it’s so sheer and shimmery. The color is nice though, just wish it showed up more vibrant.
    Congrats 😉

  • Nia

    I hit pan recently on:

    – MSFN in Light
    – Blanc Type (fav highlighter ever!)
    – Finished 3 glosses
    – Finishes Lovey Dove Slimeshine

    Not too bad, huh? 😉

Congratulation on hitting pan! Cheers with the blubby and the cupcakes!

    • the Muse

ha nia you deserve more bubbly than me 😀 that’s ALOT!

      • Nia

Why can I not type any more?! 😉

Yes, I forgot to add my MAC Mineralize Foundation.
But still, so much of my stuff looks like brand new 😉

So I will celebrate and think of you!

  • Tina

Never. I like to play too much (or is it that I am fickle?), so I am constantly bouncing around with different products–even with what you might consider “staples.”

  • Renata

hahahah I feel I will never see any of my blushes end. I’m very light handed with them, so all of them look like new – I don’t have many, some 15 maybe.

    • mayrei

I’ve had the same Nars Orgasm blush for two years now, and I’m nowhere near hitting pan. I use it almost daily!

    • the Muse

damn cham you rock! coralista seems so huge! like I’ll never get to the bottom!

  • kirsty

I hit pan on, and subsequently finished my MAC MSFN. I love that powder so much!

  • Robyn

wll ive gone through many concealors and foundations so i dno if that count but my handfinished mac mineralize brush is defo at the pan i dont kno what to to without it ahh and my other blush is just like 2 pieces in the pan

yes i only have 2 blushes due to damn student budgets and a hatred of drug store blush lol ill have to use up my creme ones till i can go exploring for a new blush much prefer powder to creme though

  • jonnie

I’ve hit pan on absolutely nothing! It makes me feel guilty and wasteful but there’s always that new color or formula to try… the thing I’m probably closest on is my Nars Orgasm blush. I do use up my UDPP about every six months or so, and I have used mascaras til they dried out, but those don’t have pans so do they count…?

    • the Muse

sure jonnie mascaras count 😀 I forgot about UDPP I run out of that alot!

  • Jennifer D.

I have never been one to hit pan or use an entire bottle, but recently I finished a bottle of Coastal Scents HD Foundation that was the perfect color for me, Clinique Stay True Matte Foundation and I cannot belive it…a third item, MAC Pen n Pink Eyeshadow..very rare for me, but I love the feeling now. I am so so overwhelmed with product, but I absolutely love to receive products to review for my subbies. They deserve it so I try to get what they want to hear about:)

  • mayrei

I rarely finish anything, but these are the few items I’ve hit bottom on, several times over:

    Revlon Super Lustrous lipgloss
Missha M Perfect Cover bb cream
Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey
and some HD powder from Aromaleigh

  • lunarzie

i clean out (literally) the nars sparkling pressed powder. i don’t know what inspired me to get it in the 1st place but no regret at all. the shimmer effect is so lovely. i didn’t leave any particle left in the pan (really!) because it’s too pretty to waste, not to mention it is so pricey. i really like it but will wait a while before buying it again, i wish it were half priced 🙂

  • Bonnie

I always ‘hit pan’ on lipsticks, esp. of the MAC variety! Although it does take a couple of years usually as the lipsticks/glosses are rotated out of course. 😉 I’ve also hit pan on some T. LeClerc powder in the past (SOOO expensive). Hmmm…I think that might be it LOL in all my years of wearing makeup! I try not to throw stuff out if I can help it but sometimes room has to be made for the next HG products! 🙂

    • the Muse

bonnie you’re GOOD b/c I never hit an end to a lipstick 😀

  • Ebontien

My Guerlain Voyage compact in Mythic. The pan area is slowly emerging (keyword being slowly). At first it was *blink blink* I don’t remember bronze being in this compact, then wakes up in realization. At the rate I’m going, I think I might actually be finished the pan by….same time next year?

  • LithiaBlack

I’ve managed to use up a hole lipstick (I’ve still have a scrap left of it, hoping I’ll find a dupe for it someday because it’s discontinued).
Early this spring my theBalm lipstick Smut ran out, that’s a god damn speed record for me since I bought it last autumn. But I used it almost everyday 😛
I’ve also hit the pan in the cream colored shadow in my Viva La Diva palette and the white/gold colored Queen, a cyber shadow from MUS.
And I’ve mangaed to use up a pigment sample from MAD called “Valentine”. That’s about it…I still have lots of things to play with…and I buy more and more 😛

    /L

  • Tina

Okay, I stand corrected. I have actually “hit pan” on a lipstick. LM Pink Champagne. It seemed to be out of stock for a short while and in the interim I was obsessed and wearing it everyday.

  • Fembot

I’ve hit pan on NARS Laguna bronzer twice! So epic.

    Congratulations 🙂

  • Anitacska

I regularly (every 6 months or so) hit pan on face powder (Maybelline, Rimmel, Mac MSFN, whatever I’m using), Maybelline cream to matte foundation (does that count?), and I vaguely recall hitting pan on a double eyeshadow by Oriflame back in the late 90’s/early 00’s when I only had a few eyeshadows. 😉 Also back then I used up a favourite lipstick (I think it was L’Oreal), got scared when I couldn’t find it in the shops anymore and bought 3 or 4 backups on eBay which are still sitting there untouched. Now that I have 150+ lipsticks and 1000+ eyeshadows, I don’t use anything up (except face powder, concealer and foundation). 🙂

  • helena

I hit pan on my mac blot powder, and i was finishing it up too! Then my makeup purse got stolen TAT

  • Marquita

I recently hit pan on my stila kitten e/s which was a shocker to me cause I really didn’t think I used it all that much. I also have finished several Clinique Stay Matte Press powders. I just hit pan on another clinique perfectly real powder and sunkissed bronzer

  • kali

I haven’t hit pan in foreverrrr! The only time was in high school with a Revlon cream blush (there was a little glimpse of sliver pan) and then LORAC blush in soul. But since then, I’ve been 10x more obsessed with makeup and never finish anything. The only thing I can think of is mascara and lash primer and everyone uses those up anyways since there’s an expiration date. OH.. and my Jack Black lip balm and lotion because I use those 2 products on a daily basis several times a day.

But other then that, never hit pan. I’ve never even done a Back 2 MAC.. I mean seriously, how can I finish a whole lipstick with there’s 50 bazillion others to try?? Or how can I finish an entire eyeshadow?? We have too many options. =\

  • 20thcenturcyat

Apart from one Lush Egg Snog lip balm, I haven’t hit pan on anything since the 90s! (now showing my age as well as how much makeup I’m hoarding)

    • the Muse

LOL 20thecenturycat I won’t admit how long it takes me to reach pan on shadows and such, the years just fly by LOL

  • oda

yeees. in fact ive hitted pan on macs msfn and i bought a backup but i dont dear to open it cuz ive used the first one up in 3 months :O and also shy girl by mac,the green eos lipbalm, bobbi brown shimmerbrick ,stila, elf& mac bronzers. i dont use a tonn but i dont like to be alpinopale…..(im nc20) xD

  • jenna

i hit pan on my erase paste which led me to true love when i bought boing in its place 🙂 i’ve replaced BE foundations and face colours (when there’s not enough in the bottom to come through the holes i stick a fork in the hole and pop that part off so i can get every last particle!

  • Katy

I work at CVS and have had quite a few people come in looking for more maybelline dream mousse products with their empties. I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen anyone come in with anything else before like that. (regarding make up)

  • DW

My cosmetic quirk tendency I blame on my design engineer father rather than my own laziness. I endeavored to make all my cosmetics pen size cylindrical all in ones. I used to use a pressed powder mirrored compact. Because I am obsessive compulsive, I used up that one all the way to the end. Was too much for me. Prefer the product and applicator all in one pen shaped device. If Ellis Faas had a light enough concealer and if I could afford Ellis Faas, that would be my go to.
