Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstain Review and Swatches

Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstain should be available at your local store right now. Yay! New lip stains, come on get happy. I do suggest snagging them prior to Sunday at Walgreens if possible as they are Buy 1, Get 1 50% Off (Wish I got this deal grrrr I paid $8.99 each at Harmons). Might as well save money on your lemmings right?

Wanna hear ’bout ’em!?

A lip stain pen available in a variety of shades.

Well these are nice! Particularly the packaging! Covergirl’s version is kinda uneventful packaging wise and Maybelline stepped it up with a silver swirl design. Quite nice really. I’m a packaging whore so these appeal.

Formula is pretty typical to many stains on the market today but alot less garish and scary a la MAC’s version (those were pigmented as hell). These apply with nice pigmentation but all the shades I tried out weren’t scary clown like thankfully. Formula is much like Covergirl’s version in many ways. The stains have a slightly fruity taste which is pleasant.

There are ideal for Summer wearin’ and tearin’ as they wear long and are pretty much waterproof when eating or drinking. I didn’t experience much in the ways of migration and wasn’t left with ring around the mouth from these which is a relief. Colors wear well.

The shades I hauled were Wink of Pink (raspberry-ish pink), In The Buff (supposed to be a nude a pink but comes across like a deeper nude pink), Feelin’ Rosy (reddish raspberry), and Touch of Toffee (orang-y, brown toffee).

They do have the potential to creep into fine lines around the mouth so do be aware prior to use if you sport fine lines. I don’t personally have fine lines but it’s pretty much universally known that these are a death trap for such.

  • Anyone seeking a long wearing lip stain!
  • Anyone who likes to eat and drink without having to retouch up (these will last through your dinner and diet pepsi).
  • Anyone who wants to beef up their lipgloss (put some underneath and add extra pop to your gloss)

  • Anyone with fine lines around their mouth!

The formula seems to be very light weight and the pigmentation is just right so I didn’t have any woes with the product migrating around my mouth. If you already have the Covergirl version you probably don’t need to indulge in these however some of the shades seem a tad more flattering than the CG version. If you’re looking for an inexpensive ($8.99 or less) lip stain to beef up lipgloss or something that will wear really long, these are an ideal choice.

Quite nice really and worth a haul if you don’t already own lipstain!

Nice!

Anyone see them yet?

Hey Muse! I actually just grabbed these at Walgreen’s today, I likey!

  • BeautyMaven

Ooo I just bought In The Buff– such a lovely color! I love these stains! I have tried a handful– CG’s, Josie Maran, Benefit — and this one by FAR is my fave! It has the best coverage, in that it doesn’t get streaky at all. It doesn’t have as much staying power as I’d like, but I’ll take even application over staying anyday with a stain. I love these colors– glad to see them on! Thanks for the review!!

  • VampiressDoll

Hope we get these in the UK, I’ll definitely will be buying some. I love the idea of no retouch ups after snacking and I can imagine it will be fabulous under lipstick too. 🙂

  • ndoodles

NOPE – your site was the first that I’ve heard of them… I might check out In the Buff or something soon!

  • jennifish

i just started readin ur blog and i found out that u had review many asian brand items.. i think yesstyle often overpice the product…. if you live within the five boros in new york… try the chinese drugstores in chinatowns or flushing.. or japanese supermarkets @st mark… they carried more japaese/asian products now!!! thank you for all ur time and effor on this wonderful blog!!!!

    • the Muse

yes jennifish yesstyle is overpriced sadly. Most of the items that I enjoy aren’t available within any drugstores here in New York sadly 🙁 but you can get a few odd pieces around 🙂 thanks so much, glad you enjoy Musings!

  • Michele

I just purchased Touch of Toffee today and am favorably impressed. I bought two CoverGirl lipstains last year and was really disappointed with how little pigment actually transferred from the felt tip to my lips…they both seemed rather dried out, like a marker that’d been left uncapped. I took a chance with the Maybelline as CVS also has a BOGO 50% off sale, and am glad I did. The color spread on easily and evenly. Didn’t see In the Buff but will be on the lookout for it now.

  • Angela

Ahh I haven’t seen these in Canada yet. Marker-type lip stains seem to be really in lately, don’t they? I’ve heard they (ex. the CG version) dry out over time though; do you think these ones will be the same?

  • Sarah~

Oh, cool! I may have to buy one- most likely the ‘Wink of Pink’- when I go to America in a month. Look interestin’, these markers do. (I have no idea why, but when I was little, I’d use markers to make my lips look ruby red. I still do- I think it looks cool. XD Just what others think… I’ll probably scare a lot of people.)

  • courtney

I thought about trying these! Are they wetter than the CG Formula which is drying?

    • the Muse

about the same Lich aside from the fact you aren’t getting a balm and packaging is cuter!

  • Courtney

Just bought one this weekend and I love it! I bought it in blushing which is a pinkish berry color. I haven’t had any problems with it bleeding or leaving a ring. It also smells really good.

  • Courtney

I bought one this weekend (Saturday) at Walgreens for $7.49. Unfortunately they weren’t buy one get one half off in Indiana but maybe they are in the Northeast? Anyway, I bought the shade “Blushing” which is like a berry pink and I absolutely love it! I don’t normally wear a lot of lipstick/lip gloss because I don’t like the goopy consistency and the fact that lipstick either dries out my lips or rubs off too easily. This is the first time I’ve tried a lip stain and it is the most awesome thing ever! It didn’t dry out my lips, bleed, or wear off too quickly. My husband also loves it because it didn’t transfer when I kissed him (another reason I don’t tend to wear a lot of lipstick or gloss). Thanks for the review! I will definitely be buying more of these!

    • the Muse

aw sorry Courtney they were on sale here. damn! You’re most welcome, glad you liked them yay!

  • Christina

Ohhh interesting! Thanks for putting these up^_^ I just got 2 of the new Revlon lip stains and they were super pigmented AND they migrated like crazy! Not very happy about that lol but I did like the Covergirl version so I’ll have to try these out^_^ Thanks for the swatches.

    • the Muse

hey christina! wasn’t keen on the revlon since I thought the balm was useless 😀 so far thankfully no worries with migrating around my mouth phew! my pleasure!

  • Janine

Which drugstore lip stain would you say is the best? (Between Maybelline, CG, and Revlon) I have 2 of the CG ones, and I am not too impressed. They really don’t seem to last on me. I’m looking for one that’s as close to true brown as possible!

    • the Muse

janine to be honest they all feel like the same exact formula to me. Although the CG ones are a little less “wet”, and a tad more drying than the other two. Hope this helps!

  • chichi

does it look like you are not wearing anything on your lips? is it sticky and shiny like lip gloss?

  • Courtney

If you have time, would you mind posting some pictures of how these colors look on your lips? I noticed the shade I bought looks a little different on my skin than it does on. Also, I apologize for the multiple postings. I was having a few issues with my blackberry this weekend. Thanks!

  • Ally

Hey Muse! Loving the drugstore reviews you’ve done lately! Great for poor college students like me 🙂

    • the Muse

yay ally glad to hear that hun! trying to concentrate on a broad range of product. high end and low 🙂

  • Doan

hopefully these will hit canadian stores soon. i want to try them!

  • Debbie

I have In the Buff. I was a little disappointed in that the cap and the base are supposed to indicate the color of this stain. In the Buff looks very pink, but it goes on much darker. Staying power is only ok, but if I put some gloss over it, it does the trick. I just don’t like the fact that the outside color cap did not match the true color of the stain.

    • the Muse

mmm debbie agreed the outer packaging does not justify what’s inside and does not match the shade of the stain.

  • Shay

i’m dying to try this! this review really helped 🙂 what color would you say is the color the girl in the advertisements wears? it’s a bright pink color, but i’m not sure which one it is

    • the Muse

wow haven’t a clue shay…never seen the commercial!? haha

      • Shay

no i haven’t yet, i meant the model in the store display 🙂

        • the Muse

oh shay sorry I didn’t pay attention to the display tbh and can’t even recall a model in it? maybe read in the lower right hand corner as it normally says “model is wearing…” 🙂

          • Shay

I found out it’s wink of pink, thanks for your help! 🙂

  • Kristina

i just bought In The Buff and Wink of Pink and their both so pretty!!! In The Buff is deceiving though, the cap makes it look like a soft pink but its actually a little on the red side. Wink of Pink is a great pop of color, might not work on all skin tones though

  • Honeybear

I LOVE these! I wear MAC NC42-44 for reference. I have tried Josie Maran, Revlon, Mark, O glow gloss, and MAC. Maybelline has the best one HANDS DOWN!

I bought Blushing and it lasts and lasts! Josie Maran is nice but it’s way too expensive at $20.00. Revlon and MAC are overly pigmented and just gross and ugly. I like Maybelline because it’s light, natural and doesn’t “collect” in the center of my lips. I recommend!

  • Jessica

I went to Target to get these. Couldn’t find them. Looked online. Didn’t see them on the Maybelline website. I saw an ad and really want one. Where can I find them???

  • Anne

I got the CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain in…er…415? and today just got the Color Sensational in Blushing. They are basically the same shade, only the CoverGirl is a little darker and tastes WAYY better. So the thing I want to know about stain is…do you apply and leave it? or apply and lick your lips? As soon as I lick my lips it all comes off…I guess I find it hard to believe it stays on thru eating…but it does make my lips slightly pinker the rest of the day. I just want something natural looking and I hate lipstick and lipgloss!!

    • Nadia

In my experience, I think you’re supposed to apply, then give it a few moments to dry, and after that it will stay for while.

  • Jade

    HI Muse,

Just wondering is this lip stain better than Revlon’s Just Bitten or similar….

    • the Muse

’bout the same Jade although the Revlon one of course has the balm attached and I felt like these weren’t as drying as the Revlon ones.

  • lil

I have tried Cover Girl stain which is terrible. Agree with another post…it is like a dried up marker. I have also tried Revlon and that does not work at all..does not stay on. I’ve spent so much on these things I am leery of trying the maybelline product. Do you feel it really works?

    • the Muse

I liked these lil as well as the CG however my HG is the Bourjois ones! THOSE I adore!

  • Lorelei

I got this today at Walmart for $5. I got #35 Blushing and love it! The stain is a little darker than the cap but lasted well and stayed in place. The only other “stain” I’ve tried was the Hard Candy and it was sticky and short wearing – more like lip gloss. The Maybelline was long lasting, even through chile dogs and beer! Definitely my new favorite lip color!

  • Faith

Love the lipstains! Very natural & happy my drug store had them on sale for 5.50! : )

  • bea

    does this lip stain dry?
because covergirl’s does and it doesn’t stay long and when applying i constantly have to reapply to get my desired color
the revlon just bitten plus balm is ok and non-drying, at times i like and at times i don’t
can you do a review on that one? i want to know your opinion-thanks
i was ready to get the touch of toffee and this other pinkish one but i dropped it so i have to get before the buy 1 50% off expires

  • carlita123

Yes!!! Just saw the ad in Self mag this weekend and bought one today (Feelin’ Rosy; I generally go for vampy colors like cranberry and darker but thought with a new product, I’d go a little less drama). I wore it out to dinner tonight and sadly, it didn’t stand up to pizza, beer, and cheesecake, but what will?! Overall, me likey. Me goin’ back for Cranberry Crush, for sure, as I have the cran. “sensational” gloss.

    • the Muse

aw sorry to hear Carlita but still glad you’re loving it regardless 😀

      • carlita123

Oh I don’t know much that will withstand pizza AND beer AND cheesecake. 🙂 I think it’s a diet flaw, not a cosmetic flaw. 🙂 Even wanted to wear my new lip stain today, sans brow pencil, eyeliner, and mascara, as it’s my day off… I still did consider sportin’ the stain. LOL

        • the Muse

LOL carlita. def diet flaw 😀 These lasted long on me but def don’t think they’ll make it through the pizza, beer, and cheesecake LOL! some makeup has its limits 😀

  • nicole

i saw someone use this in a makeup tutorial and thought it looked great! but im worried over which color to buy. what color is your favorite?

  • Jakeline B

Question: Which is better? this lipstain or the covergirl one or the revon’s just bitten one?

  • ShirleyM.

Hey Muse. Thanks for the review. I just bought mine in Wink of Pink and i love it, especially on my lip color. I’m an nw25 in mac. however i didn’t look so great on my friend and she is a nice mocha color. i guess it def. depends.

    • the Muse

hey shirley my pleasure. glad you’re loving this 😀 It’s a decent enough stain! 🙂

  • Karen

I love this lip stain!! The color is true. All of Cover Girl’s shades turned orange on me. I bought Plum Flushed and it is a pretty plum color. I will be snagging more of these up before they are discontinued.

  • Ida

I LOVE this stuff! I got some for my sister and I told all the ladies at work about it! I don’t like how heavy lipstick feels and I have full lips and dark skin. Sometimes my lips and face are close to the same color so I like that this makes them look naturally colored.

  • Aubrey

I purchased “In the Buff” and “Feelin’ Rosy.” Unfortunately both are much darker on the skin than displayed on the product. They look far more red than pink. A total bummer for me.

  • Sarah

I bought the wink of pink today and I am really disappointed because in the picture I saw the shade was a very soft pink, but when I applied it it was a super dark pink reddish color. In my opinion it did not stay on my lips that long and it makes my lips appear cracked and dry. :-/ I was super excited for this product, but I am not that happy with it. 🙁
Can anyone let me know how the covergirl lipstain is? I am in desperate need of a good lipstain!! 🙂 Or can anyone let me know more about the maybelline lipstain colors? I am just looking for something very soft and a slight pink color. Maybe if I found the right color it would work better for me..hopefully. :]

    Thanks!!

  • Lillian Mcgee

I bought the maybelline lipstain “bit of brown” today and it does not work. Does not stay on and makes lips cracked and very dry. I would love to find a nice lipstain

  • Paula Burkhart

I would never purchase this product again. The colors are much darker than the samples, and they DRY OUT the lips. The product is simply not glossy as shown in the ads for Maybelline Lipstain. This company makes many fine cosmetics (their mascara is THE BEST), but this one falls far short of their usual quality.

  • elli

I bought this yesterday, and I really love it!!! Even if I want a nice color on my lips, I don’t like using lipstick cause i don’t like the thick, icky, smearing feeling on my lips and i don’t like lipgloss much either because when my hair blows in my face, the sticky lip gloss gets all over my hair and such. I usually just use a light lip balm, but now!!! This is perfect!! the color is just gorgeous and it looks and feels so natural on my lips i really love love love this!

  • elli

oh, but one con is that I do feel like the color is a bit too dark, it would have been really nice if there were a light pink color. but i needed a darker color as well, so i’m fine with this 🙂 oh and ladies, if it makes your lips dry then just put some lip balm on top, i did that and i think it’s fine!

  • Liz

I bought Cherry Pop a while ago. I really wish they had a tester at the store because the colours always come out different from the cap colour. I was looking for a coral/reddish-orange, but I should’ve been smarter and considered the name ;( It’s VERY red and it is NOT buildable. I go easy on it by applying it only on the lower lip and transferring the colour instead of applying to the upper and lower lip.
The colour did not last as long as I thought it would. Tops three hours for me. Maybe it’s because I applied so little of it.

  • Nazi

Pleasssseeee can u tell when are they going to come in uk or are they selling them in uk already please reply wanted to know or do you know any website that they sell. not fair in us all lipglos n fingz come so fast 🙁

    • the Muse

I have no info about a release in the UK Nazi. Sorry. Perhaps contact Maybelline UK on their website and ask?

  • Emily

I just bought one today and got one use out of it before it seemed to be completely dried out.
    Complete waste of money.
Does anyone know if I can return it?

    • Franzi

i’ve had the same problem 🙁
i have to store and apply it headfirst to get a small amount out of it. but i never got the results i wished for…

      • emily

When I CAN get color out it’s not even enough to coat my lips. I contacted Maybelline and their response was “We are sorry it did not provide the high quality we strive to offer in every product for each of our consumers.” Okay?
Completely put me off Maybelline, doubtful I’ll buy from them again.

  • Ivy

I wish that the color of the cap was the color of the stain. I bought. Feeling rosy looking at the color if the cap and it turns out that it is a dark pink. I actually wanted a color like in the buff. I am skittles disappointed but it turns out that if I wipe some of feelin Rosetta off its a light pink!

  • ChelseaK

I have this product and it rubs off my lips in an hour. I don’t recommend it:(

  • Nadia

I got Cranberry Crush, and I like it. The color is nice, and it stays. Good to hear that there’s no ring around your lips orange-soda style with these. It happens a lot with my Flirty Nude covergirl lipstain since I wear it so much.

  • Nadia

I always mix it with chapstick so that I can apply a bit of it and smear it on my lips for an even and less heavy color, and so that it won’t dry out my lips.

  • Kim

I recently bought the Feelin’ Rosy color because I wanted something pink and not very . It came out bright red instead

  • Gwen Link

I put lipstain on at 8 in the morning and a half hour later it had worn off. It is the worst lip product I have ever purchased. Very disappointed in this product and will be reluctant to purchase any other product from this company.

  • Allie

I got this in Feelin Rosy and even though I absolutely LOVE the color, it comes off after about an hour! D: Am I applying it wrong? I just put it on and let it dry before I do anything else.

  • valentina

Hi! I’m using this in Wink of Pink and in Cranberry Crush and for some reason the pink one seems to be drying. How can I tell if it’s “empty”?

Oh, and thanks you very much for all your reviews! Every time I’m going to buy something I check it out here!

    • the Muse

hi valentina my pleasure so glad you enjoy my reviews 🙂

You can’t really tell if it’s empty but I find the tip starts to look more faded, drier, and is saturated with less color. That pretty much means that you’ll need to start replacing 🙂

  • karen

UK – bought one of these a couple of weeks ago, only used it 3 or 4 times. Find it very dry, and not easy to put on, tip doesn’t seem to apply stain well. On top of that, I do not find it lasts any time at all if you eat. Put some on this morning at 10.00 – had coffee and a croissant at 11.00 – all signs of colour had finished. So not pleased and am thinking of sending it back to Maybelline with my compliments!!

  • Halle

hello i’m looking for a everyday lip stain or tint for like school or everyday outings i am a caramel shade with a dash of chocolate lol i need something nice and not to flashy
