Tarte Natural Lip Stain and Tarte LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Stain Review and Swatches

Check it.

Not tall enough, tie is a LITTLE too tight, but the suit, hair, chucks (they need a little dirt and grime but they’ll do none the less), and gestures are cosplay at its best.

Loves it?

Thanks to my little DD for sending this sweet piece along after her visit at Dragon Con last week! Personally she should have gotten me a big wet kiss from Wil Wheaton but I’ll settle for pics of good cosplay hehe!

Sigh, try not to miss the 10th too hard after that little babble.

Anyway…………….

Check it out.

I finally got a chance to try out the Tarte Natural Lip Stain plus the Tarte LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Stain. OMG how did I live without it?

Jump!

Tarte Natural Lip Stain is basically Tarte Cheek Stain in a lip stain format free of Parabens, Sulfates, Synthetic Fragrance and Dyes, and made up of good for you ingredients!

These are such a great success with me. If you’re a fond fan of Tarte’s cult favorite cheek stain these should appeal in a major way as the formula is quite similar. Best part? They now come in a matte and glossy finish.

They are basic chubby pencil design that are easy to travel and tote around and perfect for touch ups in my opinion as they give just the right flush to lips without having to worry about both gloss and lipstick.

Tarte Natural Lip Stain has the same gel-like design as the Tarte Cheek Stain but doesn’t have as soft a feel. The product feels more dense and doesn’t squish or melt as easily as the cheek stain which is great as they last way longer in this format where as I could easily work through a cheek stain within a few months. They have a subtle peppermint taste which is quite pleasant as well.

How do they work?

According to Tarte they increase moisture in your lips and retain it. Both the matte and glossy finishes do indeed keep lips feeling hydrated and moist as you wear. The matte are particularly impressive in this aspect as they wear quite well without making lips feel dry as matte is legendary for this.

I am partial to the glossy finish myself as it gives lips just the right amount of natural color with a nice shiny finish that isn’t overly done but just moist looking. If you want to multitask you can easily double up and use on cheeks as well as lips for a super fresh, natural look.

I tried the shade Moody in the regular Natural Lip Stain formula and it gives lips and cheeks a just bitten deeper berry look. Quite nice. The matte versions I tried were Fiery (true red) and Exposed (nude).

They wear pretty long and once gone they leave behind a bit of stain on lips which is always nice as you aren’t left to having to retouch up constantly.

Nothing I don’t like about these. Kinda partial to toting around Moody in my purse at the moment as its become HG (holy grail) for quickie touch ups when I’m not wanting to haul our an entire parade of products for my lips!

  • Anyone who likes a more natural bitten look for lips!
  • Anyone who desires a more natural formula of makeup with a green friendly formula.
  • Anyone who wants to multitask with their products (use it on your cheeks as well as your lips!)

  • Tarte LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Stain needs proper prepping and priming to look its best so if your lips are dry or flaky definitely gently exfoliate prior to use!

If you’re looking for a more natural tint for lips I’d head out and grab some of these as I really enjoyed the shiny finish. Tarte LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip is actually great for a more elegant look as well. I enjoyed these and I’m pretty partial to the color Moody at the moment.

Will be indulging in more colors shortly.

Can’t believe I waited so long to try!

I love think I will love these! I have a cheek stain in natural beauty but I don’t think I will ever in life get through the entire thing. But that shade is super pigmented. I can’t wait to see Tarte’s holiday sets as they’re always awesome and they’re one of my favorite brands.

    • the Muse

hi melissa the older stains used to last me a few months and GONE because they had a melty formula but the new stain formula seems to have some density making it last longer 🙂 so def can see it lasting ages.

I agree, lots for less during Tarte Holiday!

  • Janice

I just bought Moody a couple of weeks ago too. I love it, and like you I wonder how I lived without it before! I want to get a second tube of Moody for toting around in my purse, plus try out some other colors, like maybe a nude shade. Love this stuff!

I’ve never tried Tarte’s cheek stain. Do you like it? I use Benetint for cheeks (and lips sometimes, but mostly cheeks) and I’m pretty happy with it.

    • the Muse

janice me too! incredible stuff. It’s an essential in my purse. I love dabbing it on my cheeks too eep! LOL kinda gross lips to cheeks and cheeks to lips but it works 😀

I like the stain but Tarte doesn’t last as long on me as traditional stains such as benefit. The gel formula makes it mandatory for touch ups where as something like Benefit wears ALL damn day 🙂

  • Priya

These look amazing!! most lip stains tend to dry out my lips..i just might have to give these a try!

    • the Muse

hey priya no worries of that here as they are traditionally liquid stain 😀 more of a gel like formula. gorgeous stuff!

  • Chloe

I have the original lip stains in Lust, Enchanted and Charmed, and I have to say I loved everything about them but Charmed kind of changed color on my lips into a super bright pink. :/

I loved the formula otherwise! Plus, it kinda plumped my lips!

I’ve been eyeing the matte ones, so it’s nice to hear they perform in the same way!

I almost wish they also made a clear one for those days when I don’t want any tint!

    Also, Wil Wheaton is love.

    • the Muse

same here chloe def makes my lips look a little fuller. The mattes are surprisingly comfortable to wear. No bleeding or feathering and they look quite elegant on! gosh a clear one would be awesome!

HA!!!!!!!!! Love me some WW 😀 <3! You and me both. You follow him on Twitter? I do..oh wait…stalk more like 😀 He's lost weight recently and is looking all sorts of geek-alicious!

        • the Muse

are u kidding me too chloe actually i felt that way since stand by me 😉 LOL! I swear I re-live most of my childhood whenever I see his face. Stand by Me and Generation flashback mode. We watch/record Star Trek on BBC ha…seen eppys a dozen times each but so worth the rewatch for not only WW but the series itself! WC was the worst token character ever, I remember the usenet days stalking days hehe. But I <3 him hard. do you remember Call for Help guest spots?! OMGZ such a geek sorry.

I've been tweeting about that poster since seeing it lol! It's supposed to go on sale soon, I'm SO buying LOL! framing and hanging over my game box…SO classic FD! It combines all the elements of her quirky ass personality plus hey WW lovin' too.

You're so lucky you got the button AHHHHHHHHHHH!

I'm fighting hard for a Codex/Fawkes full time hook up! I love Fawkes character even if he is a crummy male ass type 😉 WW adds something nice to the Guild 😉

          • Chloe

Dude YES to STAR TREK FOREVER! I remember using this banana hair clip as geordi glasses around the house, like a dork!

And yes to all that is the Guild!! AND I NEED A POSTER OF THAT!

Ha, he said he loves the fact that people love to hate Fawkes because that means he’s doing something right.

AND I saw him at the Leverage panel as well, so it’s like…i got double dosage of the Wheaton!

          • the Muse

oh chloe i love u long time. banana hair clips ZOMG! lol. old school! i swear WW at an early age as WC was the stuff of wet dreams lol. He was just so bloody cute. It’s funny as you gotta give him props for really becoming something. outside the geek world people must wander around in a daze and say wonder whatever happened to that kid from stand by me but nerds totally know where he’s at and what he’s accomplished since 😉 he’s just the awesome. YOU KNOW that poster is coming home to mama when they launch it. I predict it sales out super fast just b/c of FD’s boobage alone! LOL!

I’m strongly compelled to say I don’t hate Fawkes, I just find him utterly cool and Codex chasing him around like a puppy dog makes me smile goofy like…..is that terribly un-womenly lib of me?!

            LOL

            man you lucky girl!

  • jonnie

I was way excited and bought Moody a couple months ago… sadly, the formula was nice but the color was strangely orangey on me. Not cool. So I had to return it… I didn’t bother buying another one.

    • the Muse

orange?! really jonnie!? how weird!!!!!!!! mine comes across kinda dark berry purple-ish!

  • Lindsay

Nice! I’m a lipstain addict, they are my guiltiest pleasure. And I’m kind of digging the whole matte lip trend lately. Definitely going to have to give these a try!

    • the Muse

lindsay I think you’ll likey 😉 I personally liked the original version best but the matte one isn’t too hard on my lips either 😉

  • Angel

Oh, man, I wanted to love these. I bought the matte one in Fiery. It arrived broken in the tube from Sephora. According to the reviews, a lot of people have had this problem. Maybe the matte formulation makes it crack easier or something, dunno. LOVE the color. It is the perfect, dreamy, super-matte, super blue red color I just adore. However, I found it very drying. Now I’m used to a matte lip and that dry feeling but since these were supposed to impart moisture I had high hopes. I got none of the the moisture element. But we’re all different so hopefully it will work better for others. Had to send it back since it was broken and I don’t think I’ll be repurchasing. But man, that color…..soooooo pretty!!!

    • the Muse

really angel!? 🙁 I didn’t experience that. But that did happen to me with Tarte Emphasis Eyeliner, the tips break off easy since the formula is super soft and melty. Didn’t find the mattes drying surprisingly but I did alot of prepping prior. if you’re not loving the matte def try the natural lip stain, moody is so great and so hydrating too!

  • Bonnie

OHHH I’ve been waiting on you to approve these for me! I’ve been looking to scoop them for months now, but I was too afraid to shell out the big bucks until I read a positive review from the Muse. I’m SOOO excited that they don’t suck! I’m gonna have to go haul ’em now! Thanks, Muse!

    • the Muse

my pleasure Bonnie! shucks I feel flattered you depend on me that much XOXO! Def get he regular Natural Lip Stain version, those are the best imho! Also check QVC they sometimes have a trio available plus retailmenot.com for coupons if you get it directly from Tarte as they always have 20-30% coupons hanging around 😉

  • jerseygrrrl78

Picked up the Natural Lip Stain in Joy recently and liked it…at first. The color swatches nice and peachy but just a few seconds after application it turned to a bright pink on my lips. So strange.

  • xmas

I’m obsessed with these! I have Lust and Charming. In just the stain though, not matte. I was iffy on the mattes because I didn’t know how they’d wear… but if you say they’re good I may check them out!
