Physicians Formula Glam Collection Shimmer Strips Gel Eyeliner Review, Swatches, Photos

Physicians Formula has a new Glam Collection Shimmer Strips Gel Eyeliner available for the Holidays. The collection features three new strips of Shimmer Eyeliner and three new mascaras. They break these up into eye color groups as in “select this color to flatter blue eyes”, “select this color to flatter brown eyes” and so on and so forth. I’m personally not keen on anyone telling me what flatters my eyes most as I’m of the mentality that anyone can wear any shade of color they choose. Granted some shades simply don’t work for me but most are a-ok and I don’t limit what I wear because I have brown eyes…..Just because I have brown eyes doesn’t mean I have to stick to wearing golds, browns, and black because Physicians Formula told me so.

Get my rant?

Aside from that the idea behind the product is interesting since it gives you not one, not two, but three gel eyeliners in stackable jars.

Good stuff?

Let’s see.

Three shades of gel eyeliner to flatter brown eyes!

In theory this is a great idea! Three gel eyeliners plus a brush for as little as eight bucks, where can you get that kinda deal eh? Here’s the thing, I can’t use these as eyeliners at all without a bit of a struggle, tell you about that in a bit, however as a cream eyeshadow and/or base, these are ace.

You get three shades of color which are black, bronze-y brown, and gold. Rather fabulous shades for the Holidays and yes, I admit, they do flatter my brown eyes. They have a super creamy formula that runs a bit on the thinner side but they blend dreamy across the entire lid and leave behind a touch of color. If you’re using as a cream shadow the colors are a tad on the subtle side but you can build up slowly for better color pay off. I didn’t use the black as a base or a shadow however I did use both the brown and the gold and they work fab as both.

As a base they create a nice layer for topping with shadow or pigment and as a cream shadow they leave behind a nice glisten of color.

Sadly, as a gel liner I think they don’t do the job. The liners run a bit thinner and softer than your normal gel liner so they smudge really easy during application and you’re left to line and re-line your eye since they end up applying streaky. The formula remains “wet” to the touch for several minutes after application as well which makes it difficult to go over your line or just to head out with this in place since it does smudge up rather badly.

The entire gel liner concept is lost on these and they are more of a cream shadow in my opinion.

I love and hate the packaging. The gels stack up on top of each other however if you’re wanting to travel with say one liner you can’t because it won’t have a topper without the other three. Speaking of which the lids don’t quite screw on tight enough for me so I fear they’ll dry out quickly but that remains to be seen.

I don’t really love the marketing behind these where Physicians Formula proceeds to tell me which shades are most suited to my eye shade.

  • Anyone who likes prepping and priming with liners (I’ve known readers who enjoy using MAC Gel Eyeliner as a base and these fit right in perfectly).
  • Anyone wanting a subtle wash of color on lids (these create a very flattering eye look).

  • Anyone wanting three gel liners in one place (lining with these is not a great experience and these are best used as a cream shadow or base).

These do miss the point of gel liner however at least they double up as a cream eyeshadow at the very least. It is somewhat disappointing they turned out so bad as a liner considering the colors are rather stunning. Oh well, multitasking is always in style.

Have you tried Shimmer Strips before?

What do you think of them?

Thanks for the swatches and also for reviewing this. It’s quite a bummer that they don’t work well as gel liners! Which is surprising considering their regular line of gel liners are rather superb. I have the green eyes and they’re the only (except the purple) gel liners that I own out of so many (MAC, Stila, etc.) that will not lift off when I curl my lashes with an eyelash curler.

    • the Muse

connie I seem to be in the minority as they def got some raves but wondering if the original version is better than the glam one!?

  • electronicfly

I should be getting 2 from the normal line in the mail soon 😀 Too bad this wasn’t out earlier, or I would have gotten it too 🙁

Hmm, if the packaging is like the usual ones, the cover should pop out from the bottoms of each jar, so you can take just one out with you.. they should stack like Lego pieces.

    • the Muse

nope sadly can’t get them apart electronicfly :/ do tell me whatcha think when they arrive ;-D curious if you like!

      • electronicfly

Hmm, could it be that you got a defected set? I can’t wait! My spree organizer just sent it out today, so if I can manage to be at home when the postman comes, whoopee! hahahahahah 😀 😀 I might need to wait for a while though, as I need to bring my sis over to the hospital then 🙁

Will tell you MHO about the talc-free trio too. I caved in and got them as well AHAHHAHA

        • the Muse

seems odd if I did considering these just released? Dunno ;-D I look forward to hearing what you think ;-D all ok with your sister?! ha cool! can’t wait!

          • electronicfly

All ok with sis 🙂 She got into a pretty bad car accident 2 months back, and broke a number of bones 🙁 She’s healing well, but sadly her shattered kneecap means she can’t bend hew knee more than 100 degrees now 🙁

She’s off to see a EMT doc on Thurs, coz her voice has been a little off since the accident =/

          • the Muse

jeepers! that’s awful! Glad to hear she’s ok but sad to hear how poorly her knee is 🙁 gosh! I hope all is a ok on Thurs. Wishing her well!

  • bayleysparkagex3

these look pretty good ! 🙂
can we be expecting any more PF reviews soon?

  • RoxyJ

Hi, I just wanted to mention that you should be able to separate the tops from the bottoms that are above (if that makes sense lol). Just give them a god tug, they fit together like legos, and aren’t glued (at least mine weren’t) So you should be able to bring one pot individually if you want to.

  • Marilyn @ Lipgloss and Spandex

I have the first version of these (the regular, not the “Glam” collection). The lids actually do come apart on mine, so you can just bring one with you. And I really really liked the brush. I thought the application on my sets (the purple one–hazel eyes?, and the blue version) was alright, although sometimes I did have to go over the line twice. But I usually do anyway, to even out the line, and it wasn’t bad enough that I wouldn’t try the other colors. Maybe it’s just the “Glam” collection??

    • the Muse

Marilyn I can’t get them apart at all for some reason. I agree the brush it comes with is quite good ;-D Maybe?! wonder if the formula is diff?! haven’t tried the original version so can’t compare 😛

  • Stephanie

you can unscrew the caps from each other so each one closes on its own 🙂 i have mine all detached in my storage bins. i’m really excited to find these new shades!

  • Maggie

On the permanent PF gel liners, you CAN detach one liner from the stack, and it looks like it’s the same with these ones – the lid of the two lower ones actually snap into the base of the one above it. Try pulling on the jar and the whole unit should pop out 🙂

    • the Muse

nada maggie. Tugged until I was blue in the face ;-D they seem glued tightly together!

      • Maggie

Bummer! How weird 😛 I wonder why they would change that. Maybe the one you got has a packaging defect – they *look* like the ones that come apart!

  • kali

Hmm.. I don’t know if they changed the packaging but I own this in 2 colors. I thought that you had to keep them stacked together too but they actually pull apart! See how in your 4th picture, the 2 jars on the left side have the “lid” on the bottom -just pull it apart. It should pull apart so that you have the option to carry it it separately (with a lid for each) or stacked together.

I know that I shouldn’t use links of my own blog but I don’t know how else to show you the picture to show you what I mean so here it is:

    http://themakeupdrawer.blogspot.com/2010/06/physicians-formula.html

In the post, I show how they looked stack or “separated.” You can indeed carry them separately. I hope this makes you like the packaging more!! Hope this helps. =)

    • the Muse

hey kali! I got one jar off! YAYYYYYYYYYYYY but no luck on the other ;-D! Did yours separate easily!? thanks for the help btw!

  • Cindy

    Hey great review!
I actually have the brown eyes one they came out with in the summer with a brown, black and purple liner. These actually do come apart into 3 little pots, each with their own lid. You just need to wiggle those brown lids that you have on the base of each of those pots and they’ll come right off 🙂 About the actual product, I think they do an okay job. They don’t have the same pigmentation or lasting power of mac fluidlines but they are cheaper is price for what you get. They actually sell for about $17 dollars here in Canada.

    • the Muse

cindy I have been tugging them and tugging but nothing. $17? sheesh that’s expensive.

      • kali

Really?? They should come apart.. Do you think the packaging has changed or is there a defect? I’m curious now..

        • the Muse

i dunno kali maybe I’m just not strong enough haha ;-D I’ve been wriggling at it, even slammed it on my desk but nada, stuck solid!

  • Paprika

Oh wow! I’m surprised you didn’t like these. I got the ones for green eyes and they’re really great. I’m awful when it comes to liquid eyeliner but these make it so easy to do. I was a pin up nurse for Halloween and used the black for a retro look and it worked great, even lasted thru an hour in a hot tub haha.

    • the Muse

nope no go here parika. Maybe this new glam collection has a diff formula? I haven’t tried the originals to be honest but this version has a thinner gel consistency and it makes lining a pain as I have to sit and line and reline b/c it applies streaky 🙁

      • Paprika

i used the glam ones too(for green eyes). then again, i apply in really small brushes. thats probably not how it should be done huh? haha oh wells

        • the Muse

I had to line and reline paprika totally threw me a curve ball and drove me nuts 😛 I thought I’d get a solid line but nope, need to reline grr!

  • Kerry

I, too, hate the idea of what shades are supposed to flatter my eyes. I have blue eyes, and Physician’s Formula and Almay are always telling me to use blue eyeshadow. For starters, I find that blue shadow makes my eyes look LESS blue. Secondly, I’m more drawn to the colors “for brown eyes.”
    Ugh. Stupid marketing.

    • the Muse

LOL I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels like this style marketing is just silly. Wear what you want kerry ;-D what feels comfortable and what you THINK flatters your eyes ;-D!

      • Kerry

        Exactly. 😀
By the way, too bad these didn’t work as liners — I was considering getting them. Oh, well.

        Thanks for the review!

        • the Muse

I didn’t like ’em Kerry 🙁 read some of the other comments coming in. I seem to be in the minority so maybe you’ll like ’em ;-D people are raving them sadly I failed to get excited 🙁

  • Tina

Okay, I think I’ve found a way to get your caps to unscrew. Go into the garage, get a sledge hammer and pound the crap outta them! If that doesn’t unscrew the darn caps, I don’t know what will.

Let us know how that works out for you!

    Heehahahaha!

I actually have these stackable gel liners. I forget for what color eyes. There’s a deep blue, a shimmery black and I think a brown? I bought it mostly for the deep blue. Really nice pigmentation.

Too bad these aren’t good as liners but good to know they can be used as bases for your shadows!

    Great review!

    • the Muse

hey tina LOL perfect ;-D will do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’d say pigment was awesome when using as a liner but they apply streaky as hell. as base for shadow they are a bit more on the subtle side but can be built up ;-D plus they make shadows look really vibrant so that’s a plus!

  • tini

These Physican’s Formula liners are like unicorns (not that living in the middle of nowhere is the best place to find all the newest beauty… things). I finally saw them at Walmart the other day and couldn’t just pick one set so I left em. Tomorrow I’m going back and getting this one just for that pretty gold.

Muse, sometimes, you’re like my drug dealer… if pretty, shimmery neutral eyeshadows are a drug

  • Phyrra

I bought the blue eyes regular kit and really like the black shade the best. I was wishing you could purchase just the black shades separately for all the colors. I have pretty good results with them, but I do gel eyeliner almost every day. My ‘go to’ black right now is Wet n’ Wild’s Black Creme liner, Still I love this collection you swatched! Makes me want it, especially the gold.

    • the Muse

dd as a base they are fab but as a liner my luck ran out sadly. curious about the original formula maybe it’s better for me! ;-D

  • Taryn

Muse, you have to get one of those rubbery things you unscrew lids with and try it that way. I can get my green and blue eyes sets apart, but I really have to work at it and it hurts my hands, thus the need for the lid opener!

    • the Muse

taryn I got one off dude!!!!!!!!!!!!! only one though LOL the other is firmly in place damnit!

      • Phyrra

I was wondering about that! Mine come apart like lego pieces, so they do snap on and snap off,so to speak.

    • the Muse

kiwi I think I got these at cvs or harmon’s can’t remember one of the two 🙂

  • Alexis

Are these only out in certain areas or something? I can’t find the glamour edition anywhere. I even asked Physicians Formula on their Facebook page where they are/if they’re nationally released and they ignored me!

  • Quinctia

Oooh, I definitely need to find these. I already was making excuses as to why I needed to add the regular hazel set to my collection. (I already have “green” and “blue.”) I’ll be disappointed if they all come with a regular black liner, though–I could barely justify the other blacks because they had contrasting colors of microglitter in them. XD

I love the regular ones to pieces, much more than pencil liners. I use a tiny thin ecotools-style eyeliner brush to apply it, though. I think the brush that comes with the set is pretty crappy. My second set actually came missing the brush, which saved me the trouble of tossing it.

I’m thinking with the metallic coating on the lids, the stacking of the pots might not be very consistent from set to set? The top shade of my blue stack just wants to pop off into the makeup bag constantly, but I had to work to get the green set apart.

    • the Muse

I think you’re right Quinctia after writing the review I got emails saying some experienced the same with these but had the old versions and easily opened them!!!!!!!!!!! It was kinda a hit and miss situation with the lids 😛 i actually didn’t mind the brush!

  • dina

far left field here but was at BBB last night and these and the regular ones [all shades] are on clearance for $2.20 or something crazy like that 🙂 picked up a few to try. also the green eye shadow strip things were on clearance for same. combine with BBB coupon = HOLY CHEAPNESS
