Reader’s Request: Coastal Scents Gel Liners Review, Swatches, Photos

The appeal of 25 shades of Gel Liner with a price tag of $6.95 each is obvious. Cheap gel liner? Lots of colors? Yes, yes, yes please. Coastal Scents makes their Gel Liners in a slew of shades and yes, with that very appealing price tag.

Are they worth it?

Let’s find out!

A gel eyeliner used for lining and defining eyes!

Well, at just under $7 dollars these are a great budget find. Problem? They suck at lining. Tell you more about that in a bit.

In regards to pigmentation, these definitely come across fab. I purchased two shades, Peach Bellini and 24K and both packed a great color pay off. They have a very smooth, creamy base with a good deal of pigment. Peach Bellini is such an unusual shade it positively begged me to purchase it and this would be one reason Coastal Scents gets props from me, interesting and unique shades in a gel liner that you wouldn’t come across anywhere else. 24K is slightly misleading as it leans towards being more of a dirty bronze-y gold rather than a full on 24K gold shade.

The good news?

They work a treat as an eyeshadow base or as a cream eyeshadow! They blend out well if you use them all over your lid and have a pretty crazy long wear as well. With shadow on top you have a nicely made up eye look. I wore 24K on its own today and it looks rather fabulous all over my lid and blended slightly into the crease!

The bad news?

As a liner they are just too creamy. Too creamy means you’ll find yourself going over your line again and again because at first application you’ll find it applies streaky and slightly messy as well. With such a hydrating formula it tends to slip and slide around a good deal and it’s difficult to get a straight line.

  • Anyone who wants a great base for eyeshadows or a cream shadow that pops a punch!

  • Anyone expecting a vibrantly colored eyeliner (very nice color selection available with plenty of shades to choose from but they won’t work so great as a liner sadly!)

As a gel liner I’d completely skip. They simply aren’t going to get the job done and you can get better quality from some of the newer Maybelline Gel Liners at your local drugstore. But if you wanna switch it up as a base or a cream eyeshadow, they work fantastic……! A tad disappointing I couldn’t make use of them for their original intent but more than happy I don’t have to toss them into the makeup graveyard as they are perfectly fine as a cream eyeshadow and/or base.

Have you tried Coastal Scent Gel Liners?

I got all of these as a birthday present and loved them. At first. Most of them made wonderful eyeliners for me. My problem was that they dried out super fast. They were great for a month but then they just up and dried. Even the ones I’ve never opened! It has been nothing that a little MAC mixing medium couldn’t fix; lucky for me. I’ve found out later that this is a common complaint with this product which is a crying shame.

aw amy that stinks 😛 funny story. when I got mine I thought they were all dried out but was surprised when I dipped in and they were creamy. Hope they don’t dry out ;(

You can use extra virgin olive oil to revive a dried up gel liner! Just put a drop on the dried up bit, close the jar, and let it absorb for a while 😀

Peach Bellini looks super pretty. Hay I haz an idea, maybe it would work as a blush color! 😀

I completely agree that they’re horrible for lining! They were my first gel liners ever too, so I was totally confused when i couldn’t get them to look good – they were pigmented enough, but like you said, they came out streaky. Everyone always raves about them too – I thought it was just me doing it wrong ): I ended up putting way too much on and it never dried and got all over my eyes. Nowadays I use the black one as a base (and it is awesome), but haven’t really touched the brown one in a while. I might have to start playing around with it to see what kinds of colors it would look good under. 😀

jessica I hear alot of raves as well and alot of hype but I fear they don’t live up to all that. They work fab as an eyeshadow or a base but lord knows they suck it hard as an eyeliner ;D

kat, kayvid said the same thing ;-D I think it’ll work a treat thanks for the suggestion!

  • Kayvid

Peach Bellini could be a phenomenal blush, no? Is it ok for use on cheeks?

    • the Muse

kayvid great idea, if it’s safe on eyes I imagine should be a ok on face ;D

Hmmm…these look tasty as a base. However, I am not used to paying $7 for one item if it is Coastal Scents brand.

Sweet! Thanks for the review Musey! At $7 a pop I think I’ll pick up a few to play with 🙂

Your review is awesome! Sometimes I feel when an item like this comes out and many reviews are surfacing, its like the same review over and over but I find that your reviews are so insightful. Thanks!

I bought some and they dried out so quickly. I barely got any use out of them before they started pulling away from the sides. I won’t buy them again.
