NYX High Defination HD Eye Shadow Base Primer Review, Swatches, Photos

Primers come and go out of my life but Urban Decay Primer Potion remains my main man. Nothing like it. It locks eyeshadow on for extreme wear ALL damn day! Loves!

But of course, as any good blogger and makeup junkie, I dabble with other primers but I always come back to my beloved UDPP.

My latest venture in eye primer land is the NYX HD Eye Shadow Primer. Brand new to NYX this is a high performance primer that evens out skin tone, smooths out lines, preps, primes, holds shadows in place, and walks the dog…I lied about the last part.

Does it work?

Jump!

A new HD eyeshadow primer from NYX to lock shadow into place and created a flawless appearance!

We have a winner!

This is great. Can’t afford UDPP? Get this. $7 bucks snags you a 0.28 oz bottle versus Urban Decay’s price of 0.34 at $18. Sweet eh? Nice little savings for penny pinchers.

Formula? Awesome. Basically a lightweight version of Urban Decay’s Primer Potion that seals eyeshadow in place and holds it all day. Granted, the entire evens out skin tone definitely does not ring true hear as the primer is a soft shade of beige, same as UDPP’s color, that applies and blends out transparent but in regards to keeping shadow in place? No question, DONE!

This comes in a tube with a sponge tip applicator. Pretty much a lightweight formula that you can slide across lids, blend out, and apply shadow on top. No drama, no fuss. Very simple to use. There isn’t alot of bells and whistles going on here, it simply does what it says it does and that would be hold shadows in place for endless hours of wear!

Nothing bad here however it does promise to even out skin tone which I don’t really think it does….

  • Those who can’t afford UDPP’s higher price of $18 (this is basically the same formula but a little lighter).
  • Anyone seeking a primer to hold shadows in place for all day where!
  • Anyone who likes a great budget find ($7? Score in my opinion!).

  • Hardcore UDPP fans (understandably, I’m with you there, but try it out anyway, it works a treat and might even replace UDPP for you!).

I have no complaints here. This just does the trick and does it well. I was impressed as I always feel like I pre-judge eye primers since I’m already so in love with UDPP which gets the job for me so why switch? But at half the cost you can probably be tempted here!

Works great, keeps my shadow in place, need I say more?

Ah, i just bought UDPP last week and was seriously contemplating trying this out first. Oh well! I am loving UDPP so maybe when it runs out this will make a good replacement.

    • the Muse

Hey Stephanie UDPP rocks all corners of the earth so you didn’t make a bad choice ;-D You can always get this if you wanna do a little budget when you run low on UDPP 😀

  • Kristina

Awesome! I’m going to grab this, the NYX face primer you reviewed the other day, and the Benefit planner when I go to Ulta!

  • Lei

Great! I saw this on the site and thought I had to try it. The ingredients are quite comparable to UDPP so def’ worth a try.

  • Pepper

The first eyeshadow base/primer I try was NYX Eyeshadow base, I like it, but creasing still happen. I’ve tried ELF Mineral Eyeshadow primer for months, it works, but it lack something. And then I try the ELF Eyelid primer, nothing good about it. At last, I bought UDPP pro size, I never tried UDPP before, so its kinda silly for to buy the largest size. But I can tell you, I’m not disappointed and I would never regret the purchase. The only problem I have UDPP is that eyeshadow is a lil harder to blend, so I change the way I blend eye makeup and problem solved. UDPP FTW!

  • Wendy

Nice! will def get it, but I wonder about the HD foundation because the MUFE is super expensive if I buy this I’ll get a megashine lipgloss with the spare money I’m saving.
Looks like there is a CVS haul in my future.
    Hugs.

  • PeaceLovePanic

Do you think this is better than Too Faced Shadow Insurance?? Wherever I can save $$ I’m totally down lol

    • the Muse

not sure peacelove can’t really compare considering I’m NOT a fan of Shadow Insurance 😀 it’s greasy, separates, and I just hate it 🙁

  • Amee

ohhhh very nice…. and affordable and main thing available in India 🙂
thanks gal for the review… object is locked in my purchase list.

  • Mary the Muse Militant

    Hey, I’ll walk your dog !! 🙂
    I love doggies.
    This primer sounds great.
I did have UDPP but it burned my eyelids as did the Clinique eyeshadow base.
    Don’t you hate sensitive skin.
Might try this one and hope for the best.

    • the Muse

ha mary thanks ;-D really wow you’re sensitive 🙁 Hope it works! LMK!

  • Poppy

Etude House has a proof 10 eye primer too, and it works very very well. in fact i prefer it to UDPP. give it a whirl, muse!

  • jackieg02

I don’t think I could ever, EVER cheat on UDPP. It has seriously changed my life.

But this does seem like a nice alternative.

  • irini

oh maaan now i have to try that in addition to the primer you reviewed last week!may I ask if you are planning to review the foundation also?

      • Hazel Lyn

Thanks so much Muse! Staying alert here for your review on the HD Foundie. I went on and bought this eye primer and also the foundie. Just guessed my color so I hope it’s a perfect match. *crosses fingers* AND the mood lipgloss that you reviewed as well! If my ends up loving it too, I’ll buy it for her too! 😀

Will you also review the HD Grinding Powder, Muse?

  • Liza

How does this compare to Too Faced Shadow Insurance if you’ve used it because I have it but haven’t used it yet and can always return it to get this cheaper if it does the same thing, lol!

    • the Muse

Not a lover of Too Faced Shadow Insurance Liza 🙂 so def can’t compare the two as this works where as Shadow Insurance never has for me 😛

  • pamela

Muse, you are so awesome! Thank you so much for this! If Muse approves…it’s bible to me!! You have saved me big bucks on this one! I see a trip to Ulta in the near future, and it sure will be worth it!

    • the Muse

aw jeez thanks pamela so flattering ;-D LMK how it works out for you girl!

  • LorraineER

Could you tell me approx. how many hours of wear you got with this? I have oily lids and UDPP and NARS shadow base work well for me but I was looking for something less pricey that will do the job.

  • L

    It’s sounds good! 🙂

Btw: Do you know any good matte bronzers? And what is a must buy in VS makeup?

  • Kat

oohh! a UDPP dupe that isn’t expensive! will try this out esp. now that i’m experimenting more on eye makeup. i’m more of a base makeup girl >.<

did you haul the rest of the nyx hd line muse?

    • the Muse

hi kate yup sure did been reviewing the items slowly here 🙂

Let me know if you try, can’t wait to hear!

  • Kristina

My Ulta didn’t have either of the NYX HD primers in yet! Sometimes living in the middle of nowhere really bites. I did get my planner tho!

  • Mia

Thanks for reviewing this! I usually just use their regular one in a jar but that creases. Not only that but my eyeshadow doesn’t seem to last as well on it. It’s okay and does the job but I want better! I had issues with UDPP and TFSI because my shadow just didn’t seem as vibrant after I applied it. So I hope this works better for it!

  • neutralgirl

Thanx for the review! I might pick this up now…I’m in the market for a new primer. By the way I was in Ulta today and picked up one of their new palettes…Matte Smokey Eye Palette…I think its part of their Winter in Morocco line. The formula mimics that of the Chanel quads. Anyways it seems to be pretty good quality. It is my first NYX purchase so we will c. It has 8 shadows and an eyeshadow base and 4 sheer lipshades. Thought u would be interested.

    • the Muse

my pleasure neutralgirl if you get it give the good word curious whatcha think. Ahh yes I got that ;-D must review it, it’s been sitting in a pile for ages, looks adorable ;D!

  • Aneela

    Hey Muse !!

I want to know is this primer helps to make eye shadows pop and vibrant ?????

  • Aneela

Oh I need something which helps to make my eyeshadows pop and get them more vibrant.
any recomendations???? i cannot buy some high end brands 🙁

  • Christina

I’m not sure if you’ve tried Loreal’s De-Crease, but if you did, how does NYX’s HD primer compare to that?

      • Christina

It’s alright! I ordered both this and the HD Primer and I love it! Thanks to your review I gave them a try 🙂

          • Christina

The staying power was amazing for both, and I just ordered the HD Liquid Foundation so I’m looking forward to that!

  • LorraineER

Hey Muse- I did end up getting this when it was on HauteLook and I’m really liking it. I probably wouldn’t have picked it up if it weren’t for your review so, thank you!

    • the Muse

that’s awesome Lorraine happy to hear it chica ;-D! you’re most welcome!

  • alx

    the primer was sooooooooo
    amazing……………………….
    and cooooooooooooooooooool

  • BooBooNinja

Muse, I’ve been exploring your archives instead of working on my Research Project and a paper. (Gee…thanks.heh heh)

Do you find yourself reaching for this still?
Has this completely replaced UDPP in your primer arsenal?

I purchased this a while back but have yet to crack it open. (I dunno why. Might do it tonight… man, I’m great at procrastinating!) I’ve never tried UDPP — is there a difference in how easy it is to blend eyeshadows over UDPP/NYX?

    • the Muse

he booboo much needed procrastination eh?

      😀

Yup, I like it alot. but UDPP is my main squeeze 🙂

Not really much difference formula is pretty similar to me.

  • Samanthaaaa

I bought this yesterday not looking for a primer, i was actually looking for glitter glue. But that lady at the shop showed me this in the store and i was like, “woah! primer that can hold glitter?” I bought it and tried it on myself (the counter lady might have a trick :P) and OMGsh, works so well, i tried rubbing the glitter off with my finger, and then a wet finger it wouldnt come off, so i needed to scrub it to get it off. I love this.

  • Ana

Have you tried ArtDeco eyeshadow base?
If you did, how does it compare to NYX HD?

I need to choose between the two.
