Revlon ColorStay Aqua Mineral Makeup Review, Swatches, Photos

If you hit up your drugstore for Spring makeup you’ll have some rather refreshing options in the foundation department. Both Almay and Revlon have new hydrating mineral foundation available. My recent test out with Almay Wake Up Hydrating Makeup ended rather badly but I still wanted to test our the Revlon ColorStay Aqua Mineral Makeup as well out of curiosity.

The idea behind the powders is that they give a burst of cool, refreshing finish. These are ideal placements for Spring considering your face is probably dry and suffering from the Winter blues and something cool, refreshing, and hydrating as a base would be a fab little pick. Agreed?

Sadly, Almay’s version proceeded to oxidize right on contact and offered very little in the way of coverage. Let’s check out Revlon and see if they have a better product on their hands!

Hydrating mineral foundation with a refreshing finish.

This type of product isn’t particularly new since both Awake, MAC, and even Prescriptives have produced similar products in our makeup pasts. It does however remain new to the drugstore scene.

The idea behind it, without a doubt, is a good one however in some cases it doesn’t particularly work. The formula is a dense powder which you can buff or swipe onto your face. Upon contact with your skin you’ll notice a cooling sensation almost as if you wet your brush. The powder has a hydrating finish however not overly wet or saturated but merely a damp, cooling feeling!

The packaging is rather super as it has a brush which slides gracefully into the lid and slides out when needed. You can swivel it up and apply easily by stroking across your face. I will say that Revlon’s version has considerably more pigment than Almay’s version and also has less of a cooling sensation. Where as Almay’s version simply sunk into the skin offering zero coverage you’ll notice that Revlon actually leaves behind a fair bit of color pay off to even out your complexion and “wake” it up.

I love the creamy feel of the product however I do miss the cooling sensation that Almay’s version had way more of! I purchased a medium shade which was way too beige and had a bit of subtle sparkle to it, nothing dramatic but the sparkle is there.

The idea and concept of the makeup is fabulous however it offers very little coverage. If you already have smooth, nearly perfect skin this will work a treat at easing dullness, brightening skin, and offering lightweight coverage for a more flawless makeup canvas. However, if you have problem skin you probably will find that this covers very little.

Sadly, it does oxidize rather quickly which isn’t too surprising. The hydrating feel is fabulous on dry skin but it’s prone to disappear within an hour or less of application!

  • Anyone who desires lightweight coverage for Spring.
  • Anyone with good, decent skin that doesn’t require a ton of foundation.

  • Those seeking long wearing coverage.
  • Those in need of foundation to not only brighten but conceal problem skin areas.

Without a doubt the formula is fun to use and will feel wonderful on all skin types particularly those with dry skin as it applies smoothly even though it’s a powder product but sadly the lack of wear time and light coverage is a fault that can’t be fixed. I liked it well enough and might have even found a daily use for it, if, at the least, I could have gotten three or four hours of wear out of it but sadly on my skin it disappears rather quickly.

Anyone try it?

Loving it?

I was thinking about buying this so Im glad I read your review first! I think I’ll pass.

I can see the sparkle in the pics, it looks disgusting. The problem with sparkle in foundations is that under brighter light you become a discoball. Nothing pleasant about it. And it doesn’t do anything at reflecting light away form imperfections, that’s a myth to me…

    • the Muse

seems to blend out easily to me Eli and you won’t see much of the sparkle in the finished results but I could be utterly wrong 🙂

      • Eli

I have bad experience with a Rimmel foundation with sparkles. It blended out perfectly, no sparkle visible, but then, when I came out in the sunshine – the horror! Every time I moved someone would say “What’s that glitter on your face?!”

        • the Muse

lol eli! oh noes! my camera is legendary for picking up sparkle and shimmer so I get alot of snarky comments telling me “what’s dat glitter on yur facezzzz!?” totally can relate ;D

    • Danielle

I just got this stuff today. I love it! Trust me, it doesn’t make you look like a disco ball. It’s not a lot of glitter, just enough to highlight your face. There’s nothing disgusting about it.

I tried this, and promptly got rid of it. The cooling sensation is just too weird. I thought it would feel refreshing, but it’s kinda creepy to me.

    • the Muse

really andrea? ha. I like the cooling sensation but thought this didn’t have nearly the same amount as the almay one!

  • anonymous

not sure if I’d like the foundation but that looks like a handy little brush to have around there if it’s any good. I’ve got retractable kabukis but a compact wide/narrow brush w cover would be nice

  • p

i tried both the almay and this revlon one and i had to say this one SUCKED. i like the almay so so so much better. The almay has cucumber and i’m convinced thats what makes it so much better. The revlon doesnt provide much coverage either, but the almay can be applied several times a day for a refreshing pick-me-up and the revlon gave me cake-face(without concealing anything?!) it wasn’t even refreshing….it just felt damp….

    • p

also…did you notice their packages were IDENTICAL (except the cap cover) the brushes even have the same exact ‘warning’ on them

    • the Muse

aw sorry to hear it p. I didn’t get a cakey feel from this but def felt that almay’s version had a considerably more refreshing feel. Yup, they pretty much have the same packaging ;D

  • Selenite

I bought this two weeks ago and love it. I don’t get too much of a sparkle (so many mineral foundations contain bismuth or mica anyway) and get a decent coverage out of it.

I’m SO glad you reviewed this! After Px went under and I moved go a crappy town with the nearest mall ONE HOUR AWAY *shudders* I was forced to revert back to the drugstore foundation scene which I had so much trouble in. Thankfully, after trying BE and loving (but the feeling was not mutual with my skin) I gave Revlon Color Stay a chance. I found a shade that actually matched, covered, lasted throughout the day, and didn’t piss off my skin! Because I’m now hooked on all things colorstay, I really wanted to try this! But thanks to your review, I think I’m gonna pass. I need LOTS of coverage lol. Thanks Muse!

    • the Muse

aw my pleasure lorena. This is very subtle in my humblest hun! You might wanna try it if a sale pops up eh? but otherwise if you need hardcore coverage avoid 🙁

  • Mia

Muse, I was debating between this one and the Neutrogena one as a finishing powder. Which do you think would give the best natural finish?

    • the Muse

i’m not sure mia I haven’t tried the neutrogena one and didn’t even know they had one like this. Sorry!

I love it! The new Revlon Colorstay Aqua is great! It does give that refreshing, lightweight feeling. I do have to agree with you about coverage. Those who have little need for coverage this is great. On the other hand those who need alot of coverage may want to go with the Revlon Photo Ready or even the Almay Smart Shade . As a Sr Beauty Advisor, I love to try new cosmetics, so glad I ran across your site!!

    • Lynette

Does your drugstore have any revlon products handbooks that are given to the beauty advisors? I collect revlon books!

Thank you for your review. Usually I don’t try new makeups because I have rosacea and my skin tends to burn or break out easily. My mom who actually really likes full coverage told me about how wonderful this makeup was. I decided to try it and it was fabulous! It went on great and stayed on all day. You don’t even notice the little bit of sparkle, well I guess if you had someones nose pressed against your cheek maybe:) My skin actually feels and looks better since using this product. I tried bare minerals and it made my skin look horrible and broke me out. Anyway just wanted to send a positive review for a product I found to be wonderful!

i almost never wear make-up, but im trying to ditch the mom jeans and hair and get back to my pre-mommy days! we are going on vacation soon and i wanted to get all dolled up so i went out looking for some new makeup. ive tried mineral makeup in the past and it always made my face itchy. i didnt even realize it was “aqua” because at this point in my shopping trip my two year old was getting antsy i grabbed one and got out of dodge!!! i got home and tried it on, and i LOVED it! i love the cooling sensation, i love the light weight feel, i love that it doenst cake, i love that it doesnt make me itch, i love that it covers without looking totally fake, i love everything about it!

  • GIna

This looks pretty cool..I’ve been eyeing it for a while. I haven’t tried any of those hydrating powder foundations, but they sound awesome! I think I may have to pick this up now, as I’d rather start with a less expensive product to see if I dig that cooling sensation before investing in something else. thanks for reviewing! 🙂

I got this not too long ago and must say I love it too. I am NOT a foundation wearer, so I like something that is not going to cover the natural colors of my skin and look like a mask. It feels so good on the skin. I’m hooked and want all the stuff I put on my face to feel that way. LOL! I got mine on sale and had a smartphone coupon for Target! BTW: I previously only used BE on my face as I have oily/combination skin and everything else would break me out.

I wanted to reiterate Miss’s comments re this product and rosacea. I had been using Revlon’s ColorStay for years, cuz it really DOES stay. It is (was) great in the summer since I perspire very easily.

However, my rosacea ended up flaring up, as that formula goes on like paint. I highly recommend it, though for anyone minus a skin condition.

On a whim I picked up this powder. Didn’t realize it would have a “damp” feel, which I actually quite like. I’ve read here that it’s “moisturizing” and had I known that in advance I might not have bought it, for worry it might cause a flare-up. However, it doesn’t feel “goopy” or anything.

It goes on like a really nice soft pressed- or loose powder. The coverage is actually AMAZING! I didn’t notice “sparkles” ( was actually surprised to see mention of them here). The finish is smooth, not like a normal pressed or loose powder which one can sometimes see sitting on the skin.

It covered the reddish areas beautifully, and when I’ve felt I wanted to cover even more, I’ve found that adding more and more of this DOES NOT look cakey or heavy. Strangely, it looks just the same, just with more coverage!

Lastly, I’m happy to report that my rosacea is much more toned-down since switching to this. I’m sold! 🙂

I LOVE this product! I left my makeup bag at my parents who live 3 hrs away and had to get all new makeup because there was no way I was going on a date later that night without makeup! 🙂

I bought revlon colorstay aqua mineral at a drugstore yesterday a little skeptical because I have never tried a mineral base makeup before. When I got home and tried it on. I felt a nice cooling feeling immediately. It’s really refreshing. I had a few zits but the makeup easily covered them and toned down the red ness… I didn’t see any so called *sparkles* so no, you won’t look like Edward in twilight when u go outside. It doesn’t feel heavy.

I have sensitive skin… I break out from face washes almost all the time and this did not cause a reaction!

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!! I don’t have problem skin except for my forehead that glows. My beautician says that it’s a good glow, but to me it looks a bit oily. I have tried just about everything on the market and nothing worked. I did a bit of research and FINALLY I got what I was looking for. I have been using it for over a year now and am ecstatic with the results. It lasts all day long and I don”t even have to touch up which is awesome. AMAZING!!

  • reglest

I just try it for one week, and I really love it! I love the cooling sensation as well as how the coverage give me rather flawless look, the only problem is the glitter. But I made it up with applying standard revlon translucent powder slightly, and result? Fabulous!

  • Rola

I just got this. I use it over ColorStay Liquid and it looks beautiful together. I use it more as a finishing powder because of the lack of coverage. I will try to build it up like your other reader and see if it will make a difference.
