I want a One Night in Bangkok Palette. How awesome would that be?

Oh well I’ll settle for NYX One Night in Morocco instead I guess……with a Chanel-like vibe this palette should appeal to the “grown ups” among us. Lord knows I’m not one of them but if you like more sophisticated shades of matte eyeshadow you might want to check this one out. Personally I have a certain aversion to matte shades of shadow so taking this palette on I expected and braced for the worst.

NYX always excels at creating rather great packaging for some of these smaller palettes or at least I think they do. This comes in a simple, understated black rectangle palette that features a top row of eight eyeshadows and a primer. A pull out drawer reveals four lip creams. I like the packaging alot and find it travels and stores easily.

Some folks have compared the looks of the shadows to Chanel’s own eyeshadows and honestly, yes, they do indeed have a Chanel vibe going on although formula is a tad different obviously.

Now I’m no fan or supporter of the matte shadow but count me impressed at how easily these apply and blend out. I applied with my fingers and blended up but granted this does ruin shadows sometimes due to the oil in your skin. So if you wish to avoid potentially ruining the shadow formula you can apply with a sponge applicator to pack color on and blend out with a bushier brush. Either way applies the shadows easily but I just embraced the finger routine because I seemed to have a bit more control using this method. I don’t normally apply eyeshadow with my fingers but I made an exception with these.

The shades range from smoky blacks to browns and nudes, neutrals, and even golds. Most of the shades can be paired up with a single color for crease and lid and followed up with a lighter shade as a high brow highlighter. In my look below I used a brown shade on my lid and crease and a gold to highlight around the brow area. I don’t think you want to get too involved here by contrasting various shades as the potential for creating a muddy look is grave however two shades creates a simple yet sophisticated look.

As I mentioned above, I have no great love for mattes but the ease of use here can convert even the biggest matte hater. I find the palette is particularly great for creating softer work friendly looks or you can easily go bolder for an evening look!

I’ve experienced it before and sadly the same downfall happens here. The lip creams. Ugh. They are terribly unflattering and just have a rather sad formula. The shades aren’t terribly flattering and they apply patchy and chalky. The formula is rather hard as well so you won’t have a smooth, emollient lip cream to work with.

This has a bit of an odd smell overall shadows and lip creams. It’s not terribly bad but those who are used to higher end cosmetics, well, it might be disturbing!

The primer is somewhat useless as well.� It doesn’t keep my shadows from creasing but it does ok creating a base for the matte shades but sadly not all that great a base in the long run.

• Anyone who likes matte shades of shadow that can work from day to evening.
• Anyone who doesn’t like matte finishes but wants to dabble with some that apply and blend easily.
• Those wanting matte shades that blend easily and apply smoothly.

• Those who don’t love the idea of making use of half a palette (you may find it disappointing that the lip creams are somewhat unusable).
• Those who favor more high end cosmetics (if you’re a brand snob, this isn’t going to do the trick for you).

I actually liked the palette alot. The shadows all blended well and applied easily sans fuss or drama that I commonly associate with matte finishes. I’m sad I couldn’t use the lip creams but it’s not a surprise as I have other NYX palettes that suffer the same drama. Those on a budget can appreciate the $15 price tag for a tiny, travel friendly palette that features shadows that can use in a work environment for a polished day time look or as an evening palette for a night out on the town.

Those who enjoy high end probably won’t find the joy here but those who appreciate a good budget pick will easily love this one!
