NYX One Night in Morocco Matte Smokey Look Review, Swatches, Photos

I want a One Night in Bangkok Palette. How awesome would that be?

Oh well I’ll settle for NYX One Night in Morocco instead I guess……with a Chanel-like vibe this palette should appeal to the “grown ups” among us. Lord knows I’m not one of them but if you like more sophisticated shades of matte eyeshadow you might want to check this one out. Personally I have a certain aversion to matte shades of shadow so taking this palette on I expected and braced for the worst.

Let’s see how it turned out!

An all in one palette featuring eight shades of matte eyeshadow and four shades of cream lipstick.

NYX always excels at creating rather great packaging for some of these smaller palettes or at least I think they do. This comes in a simple, understated black rectangle palette that features a top row of eight eyeshadows and a primer. A pull out drawer reveals four lip creams. I like the packaging alot and find it travels and stores easily.

Some folks have compared the looks of the shadows to Chanel’s own eyeshadows and honestly, yes, they do indeed have a Chanel vibe going on although formula is a tad different obviously.

Now I’m no fan or supporter of the matte shadow but count me impressed at how easily these apply and blend out. I applied with my fingers and blended up but granted this does ruin shadows sometimes due to the oil in your skin. So if you wish to avoid potentially ruining the shadow formula you can apply with a sponge applicator to pack color on and blend out with a bushier brush. Either way applies the shadows easily but I just embraced the finger routine because I seemed to have a bit more control using this method. I don’t normally apply eyeshadow with my fingers but I made an exception with these.

The shades range from smoky blacks to browns and nudes, neutrals, and even golds. Most of the shades can be paired up with a single color for crease and lid and followed up with a lighter shade as a high brow highlighter. In my look below I used a brown shade on my lid and crease and a gold to highlight around the brow area. I don’t think you want to get too involved here by contrasting various shades as the potential for creating a muddy look is grave however two shades creates a simple yet sophisticated look.

As I mentioned above, I have no great love for mattes but the ease of use here can convert even the biggest matte hater. I find the palette is particularly great for creating softer work friendly looks or you can easily go bolder for an evening look!

I’ve experienced it before and sadly the same downfall happens here. The lip creams. Ugh. They are terribly unflattering and just have a rather sad formula. The shades aren’t terribly flattering and they apply patchy and chalky. The formula is rather hard as well so you won’t have a smooth, emollient lip cream to work with.

This has a bit of an odd smell overall shadows and lip creams. It’s not terribly bad but those who are used to higher end cosmetics, well, it might be disturbing!

The primer is somewhat useless as well. It doesn’t keep my shadows from creasing but it does ok creating a base for the matte shades but sadly not all that great a base in the long run.

  • Anyone who likes matte shades of shadow that can work from day to evening.
  • Anyone who doesn’t like matte finishes but wants to dabble with some that apply and blend easily.
  • Those wanting matte shades that blend easily and apply smoothly.

  • Those who don’t love the idea of making use of half a palette (you may find it disappointing that the lip creams are somewhat unusable).
  • Those who favor more high end cosmetics (if you’re a brand snob, this isn’t going to do the trick for you).

I actually liked the palette alot. The shadows all blended well and applied easily sans fuss or drama that I commonly associate with matte finishes. I’m sad I couldn’t use the lip creams but it’s not a surprise as I have other NYX palettes that suffer the same drama. Those on a budget can appreciate the $15 price tag for a tiny, travel friendly palette that features shadows that can use in a work environment for a polished day time look or as an evening palette for a night out on the town.

Those who enjoy high end probably won’t find the joy here but those who appreciate a good budget pick will easily love this one!

Likey lots!

Anyone have this palette?

Love it?

    Hey hon,

Does the bottom drawer have an insert that pulls out? I’m thinking maybe the lip colors can be removed and maybe a sheet magnet could be inserted and maybe a pan or two of our own choice?

I do love the shades, especially for my (aging) eyes 🙂

    • the Muse

mmm pulled out how aging beauty? it does pull out to reveal the lip colours ;-D that would be cool if I could just de-pain the creams b/c they kinda stink 🙁 ha I have aging eyes too no worries!

      • Aging_Beauty

The tray that holds the gloss pans; it might simply pull out like the pan tray in the 15-pan MAC palettes and the 4-pan ELF palettes. Then, once removed, one could place a blush or two – or maybe a shimmery shade for the inner eye corners and browbone – in the bottom of the drawer with a glue gun or stick-on magnets.

        🙂

Hahahaha, I love that you did a review on this. This is one of my favorite palettes because I LOVE matte eyeshadows. I was so glad to even find an eyeshadow palette that consisted of all mattes and neutral colors! Shimmer or frosty looks too weird on me, so do bright colors. I agree with you about the lip cream/glosses and the eye base being useless, but the eyeshadows are awesome. 😛 I’m most likely going to purchase this once I start hitting pan.

    • the Muse

kylie I was surprised I liked it so much ;-D!!!!!!!!!! have you tried some of tarte’s palettes? they have some of the nicest matte shades I’ve ever tried!

  • Marilyn @ Lipgloss and Spandex

Those shadows look awesome, but I HATE cream products in palettes with powder products… especially ones that aren’t very good. I’m not sure I want to buy a palette that I’ll only use half of. 🙁

  • Constanze

I love the palette, too! Though the primer ‘s absolute rubbish, the eyeshadows are well worth their money. It’s all I need when I ‘m traveling for a brown or black smokey look, whatever I please. But I wish they would skip the primer and downright ugly lip creams and cut some of the price instead 😉

  • stacie

The shadows look great. Why do brands bother mixing powders and cream products. You can see the primer is covered in eyeshadow before you even used it. $10 for just the eyeshadows would sell a lot more I would think. Least all the eye colours are usable xoxox

  • Littlecreek

Oooooooo….a matte palette! I prefer to wear mattes to work (with maybe one shimmer for pop), but rarely do I find a palette with mostly matte shades especially for the price ($15 = steal). Thanks for the heads up, I will have to pick this one up. Anyone else out there tried it yet?

  • Lindsay

It’s nice to see an NYX palette semi coordinated for once. Thanks for the review!

  • pamela

i like the look of this palette, muse. i would scrape out the primer tho! i bet i could search my stash and find a cute little eye shadow brush and lip brush to put in that nice space! for such ease of portability and convenience, i would spend 15 dollars! and i can’t stop thinking about when the shadows and lippies are used up how much fun it will be to fill all of these pans with other lipstcks that i could dig out of my used up tubes! ooooh what a great idea! thanks for the review, as always!

Give it another decade or two and you’ll be whistling another tune about mattes! When you get wrinkles and fine lines shimmers and glitters just exaggerate them. With me, even though I’m closing in on 50, I have few wrinkles, my deal is that the skin over my brow is starting to sag, I need an eyelift! For now I stick to mattes in that area because shimmer highlights make it look like it’s bulging out, it’s not a good look. lol

I would like to trade in those cream lippies for some powder blushes or a blush and bronzer even. They really need to keep powder palettes just powder, and cream palettes separate. I’d like to know why they have to stick any losers in palettes at all. If a product sucks then just ditch it, don’t stick it in a palette to piss off your customers!

    • the Muse

oh donna I think you’re right. Shimmer/glitter already is too much I fear. I’m starting to prefer more neutrals in my old age ;-D I agree, it would be nicer to see the creams out and just the shadows in!

I own this palette, I frankly bought it for the shadows only. The feel of them is amazingly soft and smooth. They are great shadows when used with a base (I use elf’s eyelid primer and it lasts 9 to 10 hours for me, and its only 3 dollars!).

    Pro’s :
    *High pigment
    *Glides and blends smoothly
*Fantastic feel to the touch (shadow is so soft)
    * Great base (I pair this with colored shadow for an extra pop)

    Con’s:
*Design flaw (the strip of eyeshadow base near the eyeshadow, the fall out on from the eyeshadow would make it unusable unless you wiped it each time which is wasting product) lip creams and eyeshadow base should have been together.

*I dont use the eyeshadow base so it pretty much catches my eyeshadow fall out and is kinda icky to look at. I’ve heard it lasts up to 7 hours but I use my elf and it works awesome and doesnt feel as oily like the nyx’s base. (oily skin and oily product equals fail for my skin)

*Lip creams, are eh, but I didnt buy it for the lip creams I bought it for the eyeshadow. The remind me of low end lipglosses that I got as a little girl. They make my lips feel kinda dry and little pigment.

*Personal peeve: Nyx uses mineral oil which isn’t a big deal to me but kinda not a thing I really like. I hate it in lotions (after I wash my hands I feel an oily residue left, ick much?) So far, I love their eyeshadows but I wish they’d step up their ingredients and not use mineral oil. I list this as a personal con, not really a mark against the product for some.

Would I buy this palette again? Nope, I’d rather just buy an eyeshadow only palette from nyx but I’m glad I have the eyeshadows for now since they work really well.

hi logan thanks for giving your mini review. ;-D sprry you had such a bad experience with it 🙁

      • Logan

I’d say I had a good experience with certain parts of it, overall its not a bad palette, but the lipstick things and the eye base isnt great. I will be purchasing maybe the box of nyx eyeshadow next time.

        • the Muse

logan I liked it too but def didn’t love the primer or lippies either don’t feel bad ;-D you’re not alone!
