Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Balm Review, Swatches, Photos

Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Balm are a part of the new Summer Romantics Summer 2011 Collection. If you enjoyed MAC Tendertones or L’Oreal HIP Jelly Balm you might find these new balms an interesting pick for Summer.

The display doesn’t say anything about the product being limited edition however the shades included with the collection may very well be. I can’t confirm.

The packaging and the actual product was a big draw for me, you’ll see why in a minute.

Let’s take a look!

A new lip balm from Revlon with SPF 15.

These come housed in a plastic jar with a flip top lid. The packaging is a bit gadget-y which I’m all about when it comes to makeup. The flip lid plus the balm inside are pretty standard but Revlon also introduced a tiny little lip brush which slides in and out of the lid of the jar, for me this was fun plus I appreciated that I didn’t have to dip my fingers into the balm to apply.

I picked up two of what I believe to be three shades total. I got Peach Crystal (deep, rich shade of warm peach) and Pink Crystal (fuchsia pink). Both shades are gorgeous in the packaging but apply quite sheer on my lips so you aren’t seeing too much color pay off here. They smell and taste like watermelon candy but the flavor seems to go away rather quickly once applied so if you’re sensitive to scented or flavor products you probably won’t be too bothered. The texture is pretty much a balm in all its glory so don’t expect a super shiny, glossy finish as these lean towards a heavier feel with a moisturizing almost Vaseline-like consistency when you layer enough in place. Just think of any other balm you’ve tried in your life and the formula is pretty much spot on for it.

The added bonus of SPF 15 will please some makeup users and others won’t really care. I happen to not really be bothered about SPF in my lip products but some folks take it seriously so the addition of such is welcome I’m sure!

I think the pigmentation is a bit disappointing as both shades apply very sheer and subtly. I also think the balm formula on a whole isn’t too much to get excited about. L’Oreal’s HIP Jelly Balm has a far more exciting formula than these.

I find it sadly lacking that such cooling packaging does not have a mirror. Flip open the top and you’ll see the back end of black plastic where a mirror would have been greatly appreciate by the makeup user. What’s the sense of having a balm with a brush sans a mirror? The point is to make the packaging users friendly not adding in one cool feature only to take away essentials like a mirror!

  • Anyone who likes lip balms in general.
  • Those who love the idea of a balm that took the time out to include a stealthy little lip brush (We all love balms but most of us hate the germ factor that comes along with owning them! Revlon includes a great little lip brush with the product that hides away when not in use).
  • Those who want a balm that includes some level of SPF.

  • Those who already own and enjoy L’Oreal’s HIP Jelly Balms or MAC Tendertones (if you have them in your stash already no need to dash our and splurge $10 bucks on Revlon’s mediocre version).
  • Those sensitive to fragrance in their lip products (the scent goes away once on lips however they do sport a strong watermelon scent and flavor).

I wasn’t terribly impressed with these and felt like they were just a subpar lip balm at a too high price tag of $10. I think if the product was more pigmented it would improve my overall rating but even than the formula feels like it lacking something and isn’t as moisturizing as other balms I already own. The packaging gets a hip hip hooray from me but I thought the lack of a mirror was a ridiculous thing to exclude particularly when they paid such great attention to including a lip brush for application.

If they are on sale they might prove a worthy pick up but at $10 each they are just an expensive drugstore lip balm that isn’t all that great.

Anyone try them?

Oooo, I am very interested because I usually stay away from potted balms/glosses like the plague but the addition of the brush has me super excited! I wish all potted balms/glosses had one, mirror or not (although I agree it ought to have one)! However I would also prefer a more pigmented/opaque and glossier gloss and as you said $10 is a bit much for a drugstore item like this. I hope in the future they keep the packaging and improve the product because I’d really love to give it a try!!!

  • Cj

The amount of colored jar lip balm/glosses I have is disgusting lol I will say that the included lip brush is definitely something new and seems pretty cool 🙂

    • the Muse

cj that’s def a PLUS imho ;-D everyone should do this packaging but yeah, me too, do I need more?! ;-D I think if the formula was brills I’d be inclined to get excited but formula wasn’t all that and a bag of crackers

  • KimmyDarling

I *love* the idea behind the packaging, because I won’t dip my finger into balm, but the actual product would have to be pretty special for me to pay $10 for it. I’ll be trusting your judgment on this, as usual. ; )

    • the Muse

aw thanks kimmy super flattered there chica ;-D It wasn’t special enough to me to run out and buy. maybe during a bogo?

  • Regina

Hi Muse! Thank you sooooo super much for reviewing this! Saw it the other day and was totally intrigued but didn’t bite. Bit too pricey for a Revlon gloss when I could purchase a lovely lipstick instead.

I own, love, and have repurchased L’Oreal’s HIP Jelly Balms ’cause they feel like buttery goodness on my lips. Maybe these Revlon ones, due their vaseline-like consistence, would be good to wear overnight?

BTW, the Liplicious Country Chic glosses are now on sale on BB&W’s website for $4 each!!

    • the Muse

my pleasure regina! ;-D Maybe but the color might rub off on my pillow, no likey ;-D I really need thos CC glosses, SO cute ;-D thanks! I’m going to snatch those up didn’t notice they are on sale w000t w000t!

  • Ruth

I adore that it comes with a brush! It squicks me out to dip my fingers into my makeup! maybe CVS will have this in their sale rotation and i’ll break my “no buying” thing I’ve got going on.

    • the Muse

me too ruth totally anal about that stuff. bogo offer would be worth a haul but not full price :-/

  • Olivia

Would you say that it’s worse than the L’Oreal HIP Balm in quality/price? Because the loreal is also around 10 dollars and doesn’t have a brush or mirror (I think)

    • the Muse

hi Olivia. I like the hip balms ok. the hip ones are better than this imho although the packaging on this is way nicer!

  • jeansco

Great packaging idea to include a brush! if they were on sale, i’d buy at least one so that i could reuse the container to mix my own shade of lipcolour into it!

  • Mallory

The packaging is so cute! Once I saw the picture it reminded me so much of the L’Oreal Jelly balm but that’s upsetting to know that it falls short in “awesomeness.” I guess I’ll just stick to my L’Oreal balm then.

    Thanks for the review, Muse!

  • tina

i feel like buying these just to melt my other lip balms in lol

  • tini

awww. I miss the tendertones so much! The price of these is pretty much a TLC though, so I probably won’t even grab one to try. I relly wanted the other one that was blue ):

    • the Muse

tini the blue one was really interestin’ ;-D I didn’t pick it up but it did seem unique ;D!
