MAC is forever asking “Why not?” when it comes to the miracles of makeup – our medium for transformation – always exploring new ideas about the many ways we long to look and feel different for a day, a night, a lifetime. With the help of props, makeup, prosthetics, wigs and sets, artist Cindy Sherman embodies this Power of Transformation – from off-kilter Hitchcock heroine to fresh corpse, Caravaggio Portrait to Park Avenue Plastic Surgery Maven – all elaborate exercises in trying on different personas. Ok, to each his and her own when it comes to makeup. Whatever you enjoy doing with makeup be it bright red lipstick or crazy neon shades of shadow, that’s part of who you are. Embrace it fully but…I probably shouldn’t get into a long tangent about how unflattering these promo images are…

Nope, I’ll be good, I won’t go there.

I love the message…the promo images not so much!

Thoughts?

Cindy Sherman for MAC will be available September 29, 2011

Will it reach the heights of your wish list?

Luv MAC but agree with the comments in your last paragraphs… my number question is “Why?” but hey, as you said, to each his own.

    • the Muse

it’s very cindy sherman LouAnne but…I dunno…just so incredibly freakish….but def, some folks might adore it, personally I love their message but the overall promo images scare me!

  • Cj

This collection is so not for me lol. I don’t see anything that I’d want to pick up :/

  • Courtney

Dude, i know right? The promo images are super creepity. I think they are suppose to be though. Cindy Sherma does a lot of weird self portrait statement art stuff. I think it would have been cooler though for her to do something similar but with totally different looks like an 80’s glam look, a vamp look, and a natural virginal look or something. I don’t know, these promo pics do not make me want to buy the collection at all.

    • the Muse

I think it’s VERY cindy sherman in style court! I couldn’t agree more…but these seem ALOT harsher than her normal portraits…I just wince looking at them

  • kiwikiwidragon

Gotta say that I totes respect MAC for all the diversity, but the majority of their ads creep me out and have in a way keep me from purchasing their makeup. i really don’t mind creativity and someones style, but clowns freak me the f**k out!! these are no exception, i get that they are her thing but they are not my thing!! i do say the makeup looks pretty cool and like a typical MAC collection that is LM, I am sure it would sell out without the uber creepy promos. do not want creepy clowns, or any clowns for that matter

  • jackie

The makeup itself looks nice but the promo images almost make me not want to buy the makeup! Yuck…Who wants to look like that?

  • Sarah S.

This is apparently a brilliant match-up with MAC! Her portraits all appear to show how makeup can magically transform, all the while you’re aware something is totally OFF. It would look so neat in the store… from far away these portraits will catch your eye, then you get close and “Ick!” haha… the features are drawn-on. They’re kind of like stage makeup, no?

  • Tara

I’m with kiwikiwidragon, an effing clown?! I have such a clown phobia that my own children make fun of me. I will not go near a MAC counter while this make up is out!

  • Courtney

Random confession time: I used to be a clown! Seriously, in high school I was part of a clown troupe that went to nursing homes and charity events. Hopefully i wasn’t as creepy as this one.

  • Shayne A

Musey, do the MSFs in this collection impress you at all? Because I am totally lemming them & will snatch them up as soon as they come out. I especially love Lightscapade. And I do like the Parlor Smoke quad ~ those colors look divine. Everything else I’ll take a “P” for pass.
I’d love to know what you really think about this collection…

    • the Muse

shayne I actually have both from past collections (swatches are up in the archives somewhere). PP is a fav of mine but Lightscapade is always hard to pull off for me but if you’re SUPER fair it works a treat ;-D so yes, I’m almost always will agree that MSF’s are worth a haul ;-D I like the PS quad too ;-D! how are you btw long time no speak 😀

      • Shayne A

I am doing wonderful :-} It’s been an insane couple of months with lots of OT at work, but things are starting to calm down. My stepdad (ugh I hate calling him that ~ I call him Dad) is doing well with his radiation. I can say with all honesty that life is good! How are you?? I really want to know!
Dang it, I didn’t know the MSFs were repromotes. But I don’t have them so they’ll be new to me. XD

  • Courtney

That clown picture freaked me out big time! I hate clowns!!!!! I am not sure about the collection since mostly everything is perm. I may p/u a few of the limited edition items and hold off on the perm stuff until I have some spare change. With so many collections coming out within the next few weeks I need to save and buy wisely.

  • Maria

I actually think the promo pictures are hilarious and self ironic, which is such an awesome fresh breath of air. This collection is brave. The stereotypes the pictures convey are so spot on.

    • Betsy

I totally agree. I like how they aren’t the typical gorgeous pictures. They actually make me want to buy from this collection.

  • Jen

If the “Cindy Sherman for MAC Jumbo Penultimate Eyeliner $19.50 Rapidblack True black” eyeliner formula is as long lasting and black black black as the Mac LiquidLast THEN I WANT IT. I WANT IT NOW. I much prefer a pen than a brush…PLEASE do a review on this!!!

  • Eve

Yeah those pictures don’t make me want this…your’e supposed to be selling your product saying “You could look like this!”, NOT making your customers run away in fear. I’m all for creativity and funky makeup but this is just tacky. But I’m not really a MAC fan anyways…*runs away and hides*

  • Corinne

i am SO happy Lightscapade is coming back. I can stop hoarding the one I have lol gotta buy a bunch of them now

  • Jackers

They look like women from Joisey and Lawng Awland you’d be embarrassed for back in the 80s.

  • Jayne

    Promo pics? No.

No no no no no no no. I think we can all agree on that?

Then again, I’m not a MAC girl, and DEFINITELY not a “MAC collection” girl. The brand is great, I get it, but I’ve never had an awesome experience and I get nauseated just thinking about putting MAC gloss on my lips.

However, those skinfinishes…Mmmm. MAC may finally suck me in with those.

  • Tam

    talk about trying too hard!
they trying to seem artistic and daring, and frankly failing at it. The collection is so generic!

  • Julianne

I feel like (at least with the promo images) there could have been a way to do this that seemed super funky, bold, daring, and fresh, while still being fashionable and editorial at the same time. I get it, I do…but to me personally, this is coming off as tacky…and even if that’s the point, I don’t find myself wanting to grab anything from this collection. 🙁 Sad face.

  • Sarabeara

Thank you so much for the pics Muse!

I’m going to go against the grain and say that I find the promo pics cool in that very editorial off-beat kind-of way. As far as the collection goes, i’m pretty half and half as to what i love and what i hate, but I’ll definitely be hauling some pigments and liners and possibly a skinfinish!

I know you haven’t swatched yet or anything but do you think Blue Storm could be a dupe for UD Goddess? I’m in love with the color!

  • Kathy

I’ll try to keep in mind that I also did not like the promo pics for the Peacocky Collection – – – but I have several of those divine eyeshadows and they’re just wonderful!

  • peri

the colors are awesome! promo pics may cause a nightmare or two lol

  • Melissa

I have always been in love with anything to do with clowns. I have some famous artists work in my home of various clowns. I’m not crazy obsessed over clowns but I get the link between my love for makeup and my love for clowns. I’ve been a clown for Halloween on and off since I was 6. Thank you for this exciting post! I will be hauling the quads the purple-black fluid line and who knows maybe an msf or too. :o).

  • Polly

I really, really want the Mineralise Skinfinishes, but nothing else really appeals… and the promo images aren’t really helping to tempt me!

  • V

    I like that MAC tries some more daring campaigns instead of just the boring ‘pair the collection with a pretty celebrity’ approach…but I think this one would work better as an art exhibit than a makeup collection somehow?^^;;

  • Nunuiviet

Those pics are good for people who like clownish looks hahahaa. Personally doesn’t make me want to purchase this collection….

  • Mary the Muse Militant

Love the posters. Mac always comes up trumps and stands out from the crowd.
The colours in the collection as wicked and great to see Feline back in action and Lightscapade as well.
I think this collection deserves an all out bizarre and outrageous packaging rather than the standard Mac packaging.
    Nice clown.

  • Ashley

    Love your site, Musey!

I agree about the promo images. I think it’s great to be experimental and art isn’t always pretty…but these are grossly inappropriate to sell makeup. I think Cindy Sherman is crazy talented though.

Also… LIGHTSCAPADE OMG, amirite? Also, really love the blue pencil liner and eyeshadow. So much of this collection is pure win.

  • Nia

Love the promo a lot more than I love the colours in the collection themselves. Very artsy so probably not everyones cup of tea, but I like what Cindy is doing and you could call it ironic that MAC is doing a collection with her.
Still, kudos to MAC for daring this collection. And using pro products in it. I hate when they bring out supposedly new colours that are just a smidge different to an exising colour.

  • Kerry

The Smile pic from the cindy sherman collection is the best as far as artistic makeup but why so many repromotes? I picked up ash violet fluidline and Lightscapade..it sold out too fast the first time around in the danse collection. I think it was alot less yellow/orange veining and more blue/purple..Disappointed that the rest are repromotes or ones I already have..boo
