Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+ Review

Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+ is a milky type SPF that’s oil-free and lightweight for protecting skin against both UVA and UVB rays. Those who have dabbled in Asian sun protection will understand the use of “milky type” as that’s a reference to the formula which resembles a runny liquid, ie, milk.

This is one of sunscreens in the mid-range due to it’s generous size and and nicer price tag of $34.

Let’s take a look!

A lightweight SPF for high level of protection.

Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+ will appeal if you can get on board with the runny formula. The formula is quite reminiscent of Shiseido SPF and features a runny liquid that looks like milk and absorbs easily. I find it starts off a tad oily but it dries down to a smooth, matte finish. On my dry skin is does reek some havoc occasionally as it seems to make my skin a bit tighter however for on days I’m having a combo moment it turns into an ideal sunscreen since it’s so lightweight and wears easily under makeup. The smooth finish of the product allows skin to breath plus wears extremely well in high levels of humidity and heat. On the up side it doesn’t leave behind a white cast either.

I can go hours with this in place and never have issues with my skin darkening in the sun (of course, a touch up is a good idea for extended hours out of doors). I find it works well poolside as well since water beads off my skin with use which is a plus for those using it for fun at the beach or pool.

I does have a few minor quirks worth mentioning…!

It does have a rather strong SPF odor which isn’t particularly pleasant.

Don’t get it in your eyes. OMG it burns!

I find it makes my dry skin a little tight with daily use so I have to be careful when I use it.

  • Those seeking a mid range SPF that wears well under makeup.
  • Those wanting all day sun protection without having to touch up often.

  • Those sensitive to smelly skincare products (I find this has that typical SPF scent. It goes away quickly but it’s unpleasant during the application process).

Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+ is a nice mid-range SPF product that has a very good wear time. It has a few minor quirks that keeps in from being perfect but it’s a decent milky type SPF should you like such a formula. The most appealing part for me would be the fact that it wears so well in the sun and does an excellent job of keeping my skin not only protected but also prevents it from darkening.

I think I might get a sample of this as I need a new suncreen. The one from La Roche Posay I was using until this year has a new formulation that makes me break out *really* bad.
Tried one from Avene that is mineral only which works better, but they tinted it *pink*. Very natural on me 😉
The white cast is not so bad as I am not very pigmented anyways, but pink? huh 😉

    Hey Muse,

I know this is an old post, but I was searching for reviews on different sunscreens and had almost forgotten about this one.
You mentioned a strong SPF scent that turns you off and I wondered if you ever got your hands on the Facial Fuel UV Guard, which is formulated for men(?). It says that it is fragrance free and it *seems* like it may be the same sunscreen.. but is it?

Just wondering! I live in Hawaii so sun protection is *always* a concern.

oxybenzone i heard was a harmful sunscreen ingredient compared to others since its not very good for the skin and I feel like it causes more damage than needed and that its a potential carciogen and other stuff (long list) I usually try to stay away from oxybenzone.heard it cause
