Would You Buy It? Sephora Makeup Studio Blockbuster Palette

I remember when the first Sephora Blockbuster Palette was introduced for the Holidays. It was kinda magical.

Sadly, its been so overdone that the magic was quickly sucked out of it.

It’s not the Holidays but the Sephora Makeup Studio Blockbuster Palette makes an early appearance…

Would you buy it?

This one contains a whooping 193 makeup products that features a compact design, ready for travel and a box that opens to reveral a large mirror, tiered drawers, plus stand up legs that unfold from the base to create the appearance of a makeup vanity!

You get:

  • 96 EyeShadow Shades
  • 84 Lip Glosses
  • 6 Cream Eyeliners
  • 2 Eyeliner Pencils
  • 3 Blushes

  • 4 Applicators

I admit, it does tickle me that you have ALL that product and merely 4 brushes for application teehee!

I’m bias.

Hey Muse! Based on your experience from past Sephora blockbuster palettes and Sephora cosmetics in general, how would you rate the quality of their products? Is this worth buying if you’ve never bought a blockbuster palette before?

    • the Muse

I never purchased a blockbuster palette before melissa. I find Sephora makeup a hit or a miss hun not sure on the blockbuster palettes in general though!

  • Laci

I’m not getting it (and haven’t gotten the ones in the past either — even by Tarte and Smashbox) just because I know I wouldn’t get a lot of use out of it. The way I have my stash organized is very streamlined and these massive palettes just throw all that off.

Plus I’m not a fan of Sephora brand shadows anyway.

I’d be tempted though I have no idea what sephora quality is like so that would scare ne a bit. We have similarish stores here in Australia (they really don’t compare to sephora but it’s all we have!) and they sell their own lines of makeup but the quality isn’t the best. The eyeshadow is a but chalky and doesn’t have great colour payoff. I love the 96 eyeshadows in the palette but 84 lip colours is totally excessive. I’d be lucky to get through 5!

I’m going to Hawaii in Feb so an trying to work out a shopping list for sephora. I’ll only have very limited shopping time so perhaps I’d be better off going for brands i am more familiar with, quality wise. What do you think of the quality of the sephora branded makeup?

  • Carrie

I have quality concerns: all of that make up for only $50? Sephora still needs to be making money on this! How quality can the items really be?

  • Regina

Nope-double nope. Got the one from last year and ended up tossing it after NEVEEEER using it.

  • Geek in Heels

Nope, because like you said, it’s too much! I think a palette like this would be good for those who are just starting out, or still experimenting with makeup. But for people like me who knows what works for them, and/or have little time or opportunity to experiment with new colors, I would only use about 1/3 of the palette, tops.

  • katrosado5

No I’ll have to pass. I’ve purchased a few over the past years. Always wanting to give it a second chance after the first palette was such a major disappointment and well at least these palette’s are consistant—consistantly disappointing. Hate so sound harsh but there it is. Now this would be a fantastic gift for young teens that want to experiment. Yes I’d gift it to a very young teen, but certainly not one that is makeup savvy.

Hate Sephora shadows and even if it was a different brand I hate having a bunch of shadows in a palette. People say you save money, and true. But often quality is sacrificed with these big palettes.

  • Aleya Bamdad

I don’t think I would use even half of those colors. I would be a waste for me. It may be good for a makeup artist though.

  • Megan

SO tempted to get this… Though whether my mom will let more makeup into the house is always an issue. I find ways to sneak stuff in, but a huge palette like this would be hard to get past her. I think ill wait until some reviews come out and see if the quality is worth it. If it is, I’m sure I can find a way to get it into my stash!

  • Jen

I purchased a Blockbuster palette two years ago (before I started to concern myself with quality versus quantity and had a slight Sephora addiction – which has somewhat cleared up since then)…and while I used it for about a month, I found myself using the same colors over and over, which made it kind of a waste of money for me personally. I think it’s a good “starter” set for someone looking to build up their collection, or for someone who is sure they can utilize all of the different colors (I’m not that talented), but unfortunately, mine still sits in my bathroom in nearly mint condition. :\ I also didn’t like the eyeliners that came with it — very hard and didn’t go on smoothly at all. Sephora-brand products are nice, but the ones used in these palettes seemed to be a bit different, and not as nice.

I suspect many have similar experiences to mine: I bought a “blockbuster” palette when I first started shopping Sephora, used it twice, let it collect dust in my makeup drawer for several years, finally chucked it, and now am not tempted in the slightest by the new blockbuster palettes.

  • Maggie

Ugh. Pass. I’ve purchased two of these palettes before, and they were both misses. Pigmentation was thin, and one of them stank of cheap plastic. Nasty.

  • Prairie Peg

I’ve gotten suckered into two of these in the past and they sit in my closet mostly unused. Not the best quality and the lip stuff is dry and doesn’t apply well. There is not much pigmentation in the eyeshadows. You’re better off saving your money for some real quality palettes!

  • kiwikiwidragon

Meh, I won’t be hauling these. Some of Sephora brand is made in France or Italy but these packaged palettes are always made in China. If you really want a good quality palette, check out the Victoria Secret ones. The packaging is made in China, but the cosmetics inside are US made. I bought one and have been quite surprised. I really like it and I hope to haul another one here soon.

i have two other Sephora Palettes, one I bought and one was a gift. the one I bought is small and old and it was great. It had the best bronzer in it ever. The one I got as a gift is also at least 2 years old and it had the extra plastic case to take the smaller pallettes out and put them in your makeup bag. I thought the make up in this set was ok but not quite as good as the first pallette.
This makes me think that the quality may be suffering a little since they first began. I also think that the pallettes are hit or miss with the formulations.
I don’t like too many cream anything in a pallette with powders. I think they tend to either get “ugly” or dry up too fast.
This is just my opinion but I’m not tempted by this one in the least.

  • Terri

I’m with you Muse….holding out for the Tarte Jewellery Box they release for
the holidays. Bought the one a couple of years ago, and while sure, I have
so much in the stash that I often forget to use it, it is glorious! Plan on picking
up a couple this year as gifts. Love the quality of Tarte, and the no chemical
    bonus!

I was just wondering about the Victoria’s Secret makeup palettes – since the Sephora ones are all made in China! Thanks to this blog and the comments now I know.

I had used the Sephora palettes before. Didn’t spot Made in China until after I bought it – the quality of the makeup was not good, very cheap, and I tossed them out after just one or two uses.

I find that some of the small, cheap Too Faced Glamour to go palettes are made in China too. I don’t know if people look, maybe not, because you assume an American brand should be made in the U.S. but you really have to look nowadays.

    HI Muse
LOVE love LURVE ur blog as always.. I’m from malaysia and they’re throwing the palette for xmas at about 60 US dollars – looks great on paper but do i really need 193 colours ? to paint my walls maybe LOL
but most of u ladies are darn right – palettes are usually hit or miss – I bought an estee lauder set yonks ago and its literally collecting dustballs in a corner – cheap plasticky packaging from china and even worse quality – the ES were like talcum powder and the blushers were so rough (I got better pigments from some ES from DAISO )my word of advice – ask for a test run at the counters or do a quick swatch urself – if its too good to be true – it usually is !

  • Kathleen

I got this palette for Christmas and I have to say, I am surprised at the quality of the makeup. Its not for everyone but its really ice and I think you would nee to see it in a store before buying it!!

  • Marisol

I got it as a gift and I love it so much. I am 20 and personaly if you know how to apply makeup that’s all that matters. And of course as long as it’s age appropriate obviously if you’re like 35+ that’s not cute. But the quality is great. The eye shadows are very long lasting and I love the blushes and bronze I haven’t used the lip glosses and eye liners yet but soon <3 I used to use Mac and let me tell you I'm never going back to it I am totally loving Sephora 😀 there foundations and brushes are awesome too 🙂

  • Jamie

I also got this set as a gift, and as someone experienced with make-up brands, I was impressed. Everything is very high in pigment, especially the gel liners & blushes.

  • Mary

I bought this palette and I like it so much. I use Mac’s painterly paint pot as eyeshadow base. It makes the colors pop out and easy to blend. If you can afford it invest on expensive make up brushes instead. Right tools will make a big difference in make up application even if you’re using drugstore cosmetics.
