Revlon Diamond Lust Eyeshadow Review, Swatches, Photos
Revlon introduced new Diamond Lust Eyeshadow with their Revlon Expressionists Collection. This Fall Collection was a collaboration between Gucci Westman and Revlon for Fall 2011. I’m not sure if the Diamond Lust Eyeshadows are exclusive to these displays and limited edition but I have a feeling that Revlon might be adding them to their color catalog once Fall is over….but don’t quote me there.
With Maybelline Eye Studio we’ve come into a nice selection of shimmering shades of shadow however drugstore shimmer finishes are kinda limited in my opinion. Not alot of brands carry shimmery finishes so it’s nice to see that Revlon went all out with these Diamond Eyeshadows as they do, indeed, pack a TON of shimmer.
Let’s take a look!
A range of shadows with an intensely shimmery finish!
Without a doubt these are some very shimmery shades of shadow! If you love shimmer, definitely check them out. Revlon has them out in five different shades, I picked up four of the five shades to test out.
Each shadow comes in a small black square compact with a sponge applicator. I find the packaging simple and easy to store but otherwise uneventful.
Now the formula of the shadows will remind you of a few products…for me Bobbi Brown Sparkle Eyeshadow, Urban Decay Stardust Eyeshadow, and MAC Crush Metal Eyeshadow. Although they quite remind me of these products, they do, indeed, have a formula all their own.
The formulation of the shadows is a lightly pressed pigment which kicks up a fair bit of dust when you swipe a brush or applicator across it. For me, the best application method would be with the sponge applicator as this allows you more control over the eyeshadow during application and also allows you to build color up. Using a brush I find that I get alot more fall out and lighter color pay off with less control over the color which ends up in a mess of shimmer all over my face, cheeks, and eyes.
Using a proper base is key here and I’m not talking about simply an eye primer. You’ll want to start up with an eye primer but also a nude or similar color cream eyeshadow for these to adhere to and also to aid in application so you aren’t left with alot of clean up after application and fall out.
The shadows are loosely packed so they kick up a fair bit of product when you swipe them which results in a mess before they are even on your eye. The texture reminds me of Bobbi Brown Sparkle Eyeshadow but a bit heavier…not really MAC Crush Metal’s texture but somewhere in the middle of Bobbi’s Sparkle Shadow and MAC’s Crush Metal so you’re looking at a lightly flaky eyeshadow with plenty of shimmer. Some of the lighter shades such as Starry Pink aren’t nearly as pigmented as the darker shades so you’re getting a light color wash with alot of glitter. I do favor the darker shades in this collection since they apply easier, have good color pay off, and alot less of a flaky look and feel compared to the lighter colors.
The colors I picked up were:
- Night Sky (Smoky grayish black)
- Plum Galaxy (plum)
- Neptune Star (dark aqua blue)
- Starry Pink (pale, baby pink)
I liked all of the shades but Starry Pink quite reminded me of one of my favorite Bobbi Brown Sparkle Shadows, Ballet Pink, so it did turn into an instant hit for me.
Obviously I don’t have to go into great detail about the bad here….
Fall out is an obvious one. These leave glittery, shimmery bits just about everywhere so a little time and patience during application is highly suggested as well as a cream eyeshadow base of some sort other than primer.
I think the texture proves difficult to work with a bit. A sponge applicator is best suited for building color up without too much fuss, drama, and fall out. I also find you’ll want to stick to a single shadow as things can easily become complicated if you want to mix and match with several shades as this not only gets messy but also turns muddy quickly!
- Anyone who loves intensely shimmery shades of shadow.
- Those wanting to spice up their Holiday look with some festive shimmery looks!
- Those who are rushed in the morning putting on their eye makeup (these take a little time to get into place, rush it and you’ll end up with a mess)
- Those who aren’t keen on shimmer (don’t bother with these as they pack a ton of shimmer and in some cases a bit of a flakier glitter).
- Those not wanting to deal with possible fall out and messy application.
These don’t get a Muse Approval from me simply because they are a bit difficult to work with but overall, they prove a very interesting eyeshadow pick for something available at the drugstore. With proper care you can get a very nice eye look from them! Although the lighter shades are pretty they do prove the ones that are the most messy so you might want to stick to darker shades to avoid a mess. I definitely became a little agitated and frustrated with these easily during application but the end result was too pretty to complain….! If you have little patience for fall out or you simply hate shimmer, avoid ’em at all costs but if shimmer is your thing…
You’ll be very happy to snatch these up!
I paid $2.99 each at Harmons but have seen them at CVS and Walgreens.
Anyone haul?
What did you think of them?
