Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter Review, Swatches, Photos

Revlon has successfully created a hybrid lipstick/lip balm with their new ColorBurst Lip Butter. Bring together a great formula, an inexpensive price tag, and rather nice packaging and you have the new Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter.

Winning!

Jump!

I thought these were limited edition but they are actually joining Revlon’s general catalog for 2012 so no worries if you can’t find them right away. I was a bit confused as I assumed their were nine shades but reports from readers and makeup forums has the number at 19-20 shades. Yay for variety. Unfortunately I was only able to locate nine shades and ended up purchasing six since those were the shades I liked the best.

The packaging is a lightweight, weaved translucent plastic. In some cases I’d probably call it cheap but somehow, someway it works and it comes across rather slick and pretty. Although the lighter packaging might be a bit troublesome if you drop it on a bathroom floor or concrete as it could potentially crack so just be careful.

Swivel the tube to reveal a slanted, flat top lip butter, balm, or lipstick…I use all three of these words because that pretty much references the formula here. The formula is a hybrid for me as it has the balm-y, heavier texture of a lip balm, the slick, moisturizing feel of a lip butter, and the pigmentation and color pay off of a lipstick. It’s three great products in one single tube. Multitasking a product is difficult and I don’t think Revlon intentionally went into the marketing behind these as a multitasking product but they ended up becoming just that for me.

I find these glide onto lips easily and have a beautiful moisturizing feel with a long wearing formula. They aren’t super shiny but have a touch of a glossy finish to give lips a nice, completed look sans lipgloss. Pigmentation is amazing here as well as it is a full color lip product so if you’re expecting sheer you won’t be getting it with these.

The colors I got were (listed in their swatch order)

  • Cherry Tart (bright cherry red)
  • Fig Jam (chocolate-y brown)
  • Red Velvet (Rich, warm velvety maroon red)
  • Candy Apple (reddish orange)
  • Berry Smoothie (mauve-y berry)
  • Pink Truffle (dusky pink)

I think the term “lip butter” can be easily underestimated here because you’re probably going into the purchase thinking of a sheer hint of color and maybe a bit of a moisturizing lip treatment but Revlon takes the definition to new levels with a full color lip product, plenty of hydration, a great range of colors, and a budget friendly price tag (I got mine for $5.79 plus hauled during a sale so I paid full price for one and 50% off for the second shade).

I do think you might express some disappointment on some level if you go into a purchase assuming it’s a lightweight lip product however you might just be pleasantly surprised after use.

One thing that does deserve mentioning is my lips were a bit dry the past few days and I had a little flaky skin action going on and I didn’t get a good glide here. The product looked patchy and just bad all around so I highly suggest buffing with a lip scrub prior to use or a hot, wet washcloth to remove flaky skin on your lips. Outside of that I found they wore long, strong, and beautifully!

If you’re expecting a simple balm, don’t look for it in this but if you’re wanting a full fledged lip product that does a whole lot of everything, you’ll be ever so pleased you purchased these.

Likey alot.

I’ll take one Cherry Tart, one Red Velvet, and one Pink Truffle, please. 😀

Thanks for the swatches and review. I’ve been lemming these for weeks, but can’t find a stocked display anywhere. 🙁 Living on swatches alone.

    • the Muse

aw my pleasure! no worries they aren’t LE so just be patient you’ll find ’em ;-D

  • Regina

Checked Target, Rite Aid and CVS repeatedly and still nothing….patience-dwindling-down

  • Paula

I really enjoyed these so much, more than I ever thought I would. First off, they don’t have an obnoxious scent. I can’t bring myself to wear/use a lot of drugstore products because of the scents added. Second, the color range is enormous. I personally chose: Sugar plum, pink truffle, berry smoothie, cupcake and strawberry shortcake. I love the fact that there’s a good mix of bold and soft shades. Third, I really do like the texture. They feel the way I like a balm to feel. My lips haven’t gotten flaky yet this fall, and I think these lippies have helped with that.

The only negative that I can think of, and it’s no biggie, is that the shimmery shades don’t feel quite a smooth as the cream textured ones.

    • the Muse

paula interesting as I didn’t come across a single shimmery shade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I did ;-D PS I pretty much agree with everything you said here ;D!

      • Paula

I might sound crazy to you now, but when i glance at tube of berry smoothie I see really tiny shimmers that don’t really translate to the lips. I can see them a bit, but not really. However, I can FEEL the difference, if that helps clarify.

As far as truly shimmery shades go, peach parfait looks like it’s actually shimmery on the lips from the swatches that I’ve seen.

    • Majick

Hi Paula, (we share a name) 😉
Thanks for the tip about the shimmery shades. I tend to go for a cream these days but sometimes the shimmers are so pretty. With aging lips it’s important to keep them really hydrated.

    • Stacey

I totally agree!! My lips seem to be in better condition and I really feel it is because of these little beauties!!!

  • Sarah S.

These are flat-out awesome! If Revlon keeps putting out these amazing Coloburst products I should totally buy stock in them or something 😛

  • S

Great reviewl, Muse! I’ve got 4 shades-Cupcake, Sugar Frosting, Berry Smoothie and Strawberry Shortcake. Love them all! If any of you live near a Wegmans they are available there. My store had 2 FULL displays!

  • kiwikiwidragon

Revlon is going to be 30% off next week at Walgreens, starting Sunday! I am going to pick up those grow luscious liners you talked about yesterday!

  • Tina

I went to Ulta and Rite Aid and they both have them but they are selling them for close to 8 dollars! WTH? Rite Aid has the Up+ promotion on Revlon right now, but still doesn’t seem like a bargain to buy 2 at retail just to get an Up+ reward.

I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond and they’re selling it for around 5.00 dollars. They didn’t have any of the shades I wanted and just as well, I didn’t have one of those handy dandy 20% off coupons that everyone has. Dude, I saw a lady take out a purse filled with those BB&B coupons! How the heck did she get so many?!!

I went to Walgreen’s the other day and they didn’t have any of these. CVS didn’t have them either. Sheesh, I sure did go to a lot of drugstores just to find these huh? And yet, I’m empty handed. Good thing these are not LE.

    • the Muse

ugh that’s TOO much! wth! I’m sorry! I hope by now you found them at a better price tina!

    • Majick

About the BBB coupons – they NEVER expire so don’t throw them away. Even though they have an exp. date BBB will still accept them. They are also good at Harmon’s if you have one of those.

  • Aenaria

I picked up a tube of Pink Truffle on a whim one morning – one of the best spur of the moment purchases I ever made. I have really dry lips, and this made them feel nice and smooth. Can’t comment on the wear, but that’s more because I never really paid attention. The color was gorgeous – the perfect ‘My lips but better’ color that I actually feel comfortable wearing without a full face of makeup! For anyone out there seeing this, they’re definitely worth snagging when they come to your neck of the woods.

    Thanks for sharing, Muse!

  • Ivy

These remind me of Clinique’s Almost Lipsticks, the Red Velvet one in particular is reminiscent of Black Honey!

    • Majick

If you want a total dup of Clinique Black Honey purchase this is Fig Jam. It looks dark but it’s very sheer.

  • Claudia

Just saw them today at CVS! Oh my they are gorgeous. I am lemming for the plum one, its so gorgeous. Love the pigment in these!

  • Boone

My Walgreens does not have these in stock yet, but I found a display (as others have mentioned, separate from the regular Revlon stock) at my CVS that had a few left. Almost all of the pink shades were sold out, but I snagged Strawberry Shortcake and Sweet Tart. They cost around $7.50 each (but were BOGO 50% off). I really like the texture, but the colors don’t work for me. They are both more cool-toned applied than they appeared in the tube, and read kind of fuchsia on me. I’m going to keep an eye out for Berry Smoothie and Pink Truffle, as they look like the softest, warmest shades, but I’m afraid the rest of the shade range is just too bright and harsh for me. 🙁

  • mayrei

I stopped at Walgreens and they only had a few shades left, so I didn’t have a lot of options. :-/ I ended up with Pink Truffle and Berry Smoothie. I like Pink Truffle a lot – it’s a nice MLBB shade, and I think it’s pretty long lasting. I didn’t care for Berry Smoothie – it’s really bright pink on me and didn’t suit me at all.

  • deb

I love the Colorburst line and these lip butters did not disappoint! I initially purchased 2, then got 1 more. I’ll probably pick up a new one everytime I’m in Walgreens, love em!

  • Fath!Ma

i have been wanting this for a while now, ever since i saw the swatches and review of these on other blogs i have been praying to god to make this available in india..!!

    they just seem so ME..!

Right now i am living off of swatches..!

  • Cecilia

I found these today at Rite Aid. I chose Creme Brulee and Pink Truffle. I dont normally wear lipsticks since I find them drying but I am in love with this product! It feels very moisturizing and nice on the lips

  • Caty

These rock. I originally picked up Creme Brulee, Red Velvet, and Candy Apple. Creme Brulee is pretty a nude but on my fair complexion it didn’t work (concealer lips). Red Velvet was waaaay too dark and vampy. Candy Apple is great for fair neutral to warm gals who can never pull off the cherry pinks like Cherry Tart. I love me some warm toned reds and they’re always so hard to find at drugstores! I returned Red Velvet and Creme Brulee for Tutti Frutti and Peach Parfait.

Tutti Fruitti is a really pretty very sheer hybrid of orange, pink, and peach. It really perks up my face. All NC 15-20s need to try this. Peach Parfait isn’t so much a straight peach as a pink-peach. It has faint silver flecks which I would normally hate but they aren’t gritty and add depth so it ends up being a slightly shimmery MLBB shade.

I really want to try Creamsicle next but am afraid it’ll be too light. :/

    /end novel. Hope this helps!

    • Caty

Forgot to add – I like these 1000X more than the lipsticks. If they were a bust for you too, you gotta try the lip butters. 😀

  • Kim

Muse these are seriously one of the best things to hit the market in years! I’m totally obsessed with them, they are definitely a HG item for me.

  • Majick

Thought I could pass but after this review I think I’ll look for them today when I go to Harmon’s. I love the colors you selected (we tend to like the same warmer tones w/ a few cool thrown in for pop factor).

  • telle

yay! i cannot wait to try these! these haven’t come out in canada that i have seen previously, but have heard directly from a revlon rep that they will hit canada in the next month or two. i cannot wait to haul some! 😀

  • Phyrra

The only thing I was disappointed by was that these didn’t have SPF. If they had SPF they’d be perfect to me. I picked up Creme Brulee and Lollipop.

  • Suzie

I’m obsessed with these, I bought 2 and went back and got two more. I love them so much!

  • Maggie

These look very promising. Revlon is one of those drugstore brands that doesn’t catch my attention a lot – it just seems stodgy somehow. Yet it has some really excellent products, once I get past my initial impressions and give them a try. Love their Colorstay foundations, nail polishes and Colorburst glosses.

  • TokyoChel

After looking at every store in town I finally found these at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for like $5.79 or something and picked up Sugar Frosting and Gumdrop. I do really like them, but I agree with Muse that they can look a bit patchy on very dry lips.
Just yesterday I found a new display of them at my local Rite Aid but they were $7.49! So it wouldn’t be worth getting them there unless they had a good sale going.
    Thanks for the review Muse!

    • the Muse

chel agreed…def need a smooth working surface to get the best results. $7.49 is a bit much 🙁 thank god for Harmons/BBB ;-D best place to get makeup imho! my pleasure hun!

  • cathryn

    Oooooohhhhhh!!!!

I have been drooling over everyone’s swatches of these babies. This is exactly what I wanted those DuWop ice tea thingies to be. I love intense color, so this is seriously as light as I go.

  • Haruka

I have been looking for better pics of them for the past few days so thanks for the swatches! I wish they have more shine to them but they look very nice. Too bad they aren’t released here yet.

    • the Muse

haruka that would be fab if they did but a little gloss on top helps ;-D Hope you get them soon!

  • allin

Stay away from the shimmery ones, they look cheap on. Fig Jam seems to be getting the most kudos. This totally takes the place of their lip stain product for me.

  • darkeyedfran (claire ramirez)

You’ve created a monster dear muse! I finally found these yesterday and bought three! they remind me of a cross between tarte Lipsurgence and Benefit silky finish lipstick. I love how these actually moisturize instead o sitting ontop o your lips! They are non-waxy too and the color goes on evenly unlike the lipsurgence! These have made me sooooo happy! so glad I check your website daily and found these on your previous post! <3

    • the Muse

awww yay claire I’m so happy to hear you’re loving them ;-D that’s great news! Enjoy hun!!!!!!!!

      • darkeyedfran (claire ramirez)

my “F” button is janky, it sounds like I have a Yorkshire accent when I re-read this! I hope that I can get some more o these sometime this week! I really want creme brulee and strawberry shortcake!

  • Mindy

I got the Pink Truffle and I love it! Thanks for the recommendation. These lip butters are awesome.

  • MC

I bought Pink Truffle on a whim while at CVS and I am in love with these lip butters! So smooth and such a pretty neutral pink.

  • Stacey

I loved them so much I have tracked down all 20 shades!!! Every one is FABULOUS!!

  • JoElla

I am so very lucky that my local HEB grocery store ( I live in Central Texas) is offering an instore coupon for 3.00 off Revlon face and lip products (2.00 off for eye and nail products).

I picked up Sugar Plum and and Pink Truffle first. I really like these, they are totally ‘your lips but better’ colors.

Being the cheeky girl that I am, I went back and picked up Cream Brulee and Fig Jam!

With the coupons, it made it 4 dollars and change each!

It was hard not to be a total piggy and nab them all.. but in reality, who needs that many lip producs?! (OMG did I just type that?! LOL)

    • the Muse

LOL Jo you need all 20 you know you do *nudge nudge wink wink* LOL ;-D great deal on the 4 bucks each!

  • JoElla

Ooops forgot to add… Hey it is a Monday after the time change.. I just count myself lucky getting everyone out the door on time this morning! LOL

IMO these wear like a balm, but offer the color of a lipstick, and look glossy without the annoying hair getting stuck in it when the wind blows.

I wore Sugar Plum over my Revlon lipstain Instinct and the combo was fantab! I get a lot of wear time with the new lipbutters and find them more forgiving than a regular lipstick, and longer wearing than a gloss without the annoying drying out of my lips, with a longer wearing gloss.

    • the Muse

omg time change kinda rocks for me as it adds a much needed hour onto my day ;-D but still I swear I was running hairy this morning try to get myself together ;-D

I agree, it’s really hybrid product that takes the place of gloss, lipstick, and stain as it kinda sorta performs all the functions ;-D

  • HapaGirl84

Wheeee yay Muse, thanks for the review! I picked up Pink Truffle, Peach Parfait (my favorite — will probably buy a backup of that one!), and Berry Smoothie. Glad these lived up to the hype, but how did the hype get created in the first place? I’m so curious. 🙂

    • the Muse

my pleasure hapa 🙂 glad you’re enjoy these 🙂

I imagine it was all the many, many beauty blogs doing reviews that created the craze 🙂 It went pretty viral after it appeared on makeup forums and sites 🙂

  • Prairie Peg

I have six of these so far (I want them all!) but my fav out of them is the Brown Sugar – great natural/nude color and long lasting! This is wonderful product!

  • Majick

SCORE! I went to a different Harmon’s yesterday and found 2 in colors I thought would work. I got Fig Jam which is in my opinion a dup for Black Honey. It’s very sheer. It’s very close in color to Pink Truffle (my other pic) but Pink Truffle is not sheer.

Pink Truffle reminds me of Clinique Tenderheart with a little less brown. Or, Buxom Lip Gloss in Dolly. It’s that MLBB color – pinkish mauve brown?

I would like to find Creme Brulee. How is that one texture and tone wise? Is it sheer or with more pigment? Thanks.

    • the Muse

yay! awesome! dontcha just love harmons? where in NY are you btw? Everyone always says, “eh? harmons? what’s dat?” I don’t have creme brulee, sorry :-/ Pink Truffle def a lovely MLBB ;D

      • Majick

I actually hail from central NJ so we’re practically neighbors. Harmons is great, I just wish they’d stop stocking those smelly candles. Sometimes I can’t even breathe in there. It’s not as bad as it used to be, for a while I wouldn’t even step foot in the store. If I really needed something I’d hold my breath and run in. That was the only time in my life where I ever got out of Harmons for less than $40. LOL

        • the Muse

it’s my crack store ;-D loves it! so cheap ;-D I never noticed the candle thing..hmm! I never even seen candles in my stores! ha!

          • Majick

Yeah, the candles (votives) are SMoke Eaters or something like that. I’m very sensitive to smells – especially the “clean” fragrances – and these are toxic to me.

If you’re used to a lot of fragrances then it may not even be noticable to you. My friend doesn’t notice it when we go. LOL

          • the Muse

don’t go into yankee candle than girl! they’d have to call 911 for ya!

        • Michelle

Huh?!? I live in Central NJ too and I’ve never even heard of Harmon’s before reading this blog! Wish there was one near me! 🙁

    • SJG

I got Creme Brulee. It’s really light in color (as in, if you’re going for a 60s mod lip this would be perfect) but NOT sheer, and the texture seemed kind of heavy. I might try another one if they’re cheap at Target, but between this and the L’oreal Colour Riche Balm I’ll take the L’oreal.

  • Majick

The Yankee Candle store is a bit much but there are a few that I actaully like a lot. My Favorite of course is the “ancient” Witches Brew. That was truly one of the best.

Never forget DH bought what he thought was Witches Brew – it was black and had a pic of the full moon on the jar. Damn near killed me – it smelled like Drakkar men’s fragrance. I took it back to the store and they let me exchange it but I had a hard time finding anything because they discontinued the WB. I think they finally brought it back and I bought a million votives and tea lights. LOL

I had to give the man kudos though because his heart was in the right place.

  • Jenn

So I bought two of these at CVS (Buy 1 get 1 1/2 off). I think they were way overpriced though. 7.99 each. If I didn’t get one half off I dunno if I would purchase them at full price. I got Cherry Tart and Red Velvet, so pretty. If they were a bit cheaper I’d definitely splurge more! They had some at target too(couldn’t find the price) but they didn’t have the colors I wanted there. Ulta didn’t have them at all, neither did walgreens. I live in northern CA, maybe that’s why the higher price, LOL!

    • the Muse

no I’ve heard others say the same jenn, that’s kinda a craptastic price :-/

  • Tracy

what is the last swatch on the right of the second picture ? Is that pink truffle ?

  • Nikki

These are the BEST!! I love them! I only have two shades right now but I want them all! I love how moisturizing they are and how stinking long they LAST on the lips! I constantly purse my lips ( nuervous habit) and these babies actually stay on. And when they do wear off they leave a subtle stain behind, which I LOVE! I hope they never discontinue these!

  • Taylor

I love Pink Truffle, I’m going to have to go and get it! 😀

  • Clio

I swear to god I saw a swatch online somewhere of one called “macaroon,” but I can’t find it in stores for the life of me!

    • mayrei

I’ve seen Macaroon popping up on Pinterest and other places…. I think it’s a UK exclusive shade.

      • Danadoo

Haha, im bringing this post into late 2014, but i FINALLY bought these and just had to rave a little bit! It honestly took me so long to buy because i was sure i wouldnt like them. As far as colored lip products go, im strictly a full on lipstick kinda gal..no colored glosses, or wimpy sheer balms for me. However, it seems like EVERYONE is making lip butters now, so i got curious. I dug up your review and went straight to the drugstore. Behold..they were clearancing out several of the colors, and I found a few that looked very me. Took ’em home and proceeded to fall in love! Heading out to walgreens today so i can try the NYX version. I think i just found a new best (lip) friend!!

  • Danadoo

Whoops, i meant to say i was heading out to Target to buy the NYX balms, I WISH that walgreens carried NYX! I cant complain though, at least Target is carrying them now, there was literally no place in town to buy before.
