Covergirl Blast Flipstick Review, Swatches, Photos

Covergirl Blast Flipstick is a brand new dual sided lipstick that Covergirl has released for Spring 2012. Considering the popularity of Lash Blast it’s understandable they wanted to go all franchise with the “blast” name I guess.

Let’s take a look at these and see if you need ’em!

Covergirl designed these in a way that you’ll have a cream finish and a shimmer one in one tube so you can mix and match shades to create a variety of looks. The shimmer side will also definite a look and give it dimension.

Personally, I think the idea is fun but useless. This isn’t to say you’ll think so perhaps you’ll think it’s a great idea I’m just saying I personally don’t need to use two different lipsticks or formulas. I don’t feel it offers me variety in that aspect. The chances I’ll apply two lipsticks in one look are very slim. On the upside at least you’re getting two lipsticks at one price of $7-8.

I hate to be a negative Nancy but I personally think the formula is rubbish on these. They are pretty dry, even the supposed “shimmer” side. I could be off base here since I don’t get along famously with cream finishes but both sides seem cream to me with some metallic thrown in and both sides seem very, very drying. They have a decent glide, very good pigmentation, but they feel cakey on my lips plus they really look bad if my lips are dry and chapped. Moral of the story? I don’t want to feel my lipstick on my lips, these are just so heavy! All the shades I purchased and all the shades I’ve seen so far in stores are also very loud and garish. I like a bold lippie on occasion but these take bold to a new levels and the shades just aren’t very wearable. For example, I ordered a few of the coral, peachy colors and all of them are really orange and bright.

I’m really confused where they think the shimmer is in this lipstick as both sides just seem like a cream but one side is cream with a bit of metallic but I’m not seeing any glitter, sparkle, or shimmer so there version of a shimmer lipstick seems to be alot difference from my own.

Colors I purchased:

  • Snap (peach and taupe-y brown)
  • Stunner (orange coral and metallic golden bronze peach)
  • Cheeky (reddish orange and light orange red)
  • Smooch (dusky peach brown and metallic dark peach)

I think the idea is good in theory but not so much in practice plus they really screwed up on the shade selection and less than stellar formula here.

I fear Covergirl Blast Flipsticks are just as bad as everything else that the brand puts “blast” onto.

No likey.

I actually just bought Glimmer today on a whim and for curiosity sake while getting stuff at Rite Aid and I think the color is just “okay” I like the shimmer shade more than the creme shade I can’t stand the smell of the lipstick though. Cover Girl lipsticks have a smell that is off putting to me. I feel like I wasted $10 on one shade I like, a useless shade I am meh about, and something that smells.

Revlon Lip Butters FTW. I should have bought that instead. :/ It’s the only drugstore lipstick I adore.

    • the Muse

ah true, I didn’t notice but yeah now that you say it, it does smell kinda of strange. it’s just an ok lipstick, not even that, totally recommend the lip butters, those are WAY nicer and cheaper too!

It smells like fake sweet cheap crayons. Like the unbranded crayons kids get in restaurants mixed with some saccharine sweet smell. I can’t wear UD lipsticks because the fake caramel smell makes me sick to my stomach.

        • the Muse

sniffing now you’re right, crayons ;-D haha! smell is the smallest offense but me, I thought the overall formula sucked!

I just purchased the blastlipstick 830 tease tanquine i was dissatisfied it looked nothing like the picture i saw i was expecting a wow factor! What i got was a red lip with a dry shine, the moisture of it i liked but overall i give it a 3 out of 10

  • Miriam

Thanks for posting about the scent. I really liked the color of snap but I can’t stand heavily scented lipsticks/gloss. They make me sick to my stomach. Guess I’ll save my money and look for something else.

  • Sara

I saw these in a CVS the other day and totally skipped them since you hadn’t reviewed yet. Good call.

Did pick up two infallibles and two tattoo eye cream (or whatever they’re called). Preliminary testing gives them a thumbs up. Though I’ll definitely say infallible is NOT a dupe to the armani shadows. Not in colors, formula, or wear time. Not to say they aren’t nice and I won’t buy more….just that they shouldn’t be used in the same breath as Eyes to Kill. 🙂 Been seeing that everywhere.

    • the Muse

that aren’t great imho sara ;-D grab something else…!!!!!!!! I thought they were a good enough dupe but a bit heavier than Armani’s version, cakey, they do wear very very very well for me no creasing at all!

      • Sara

They do! I was really happy when I took my makeup off last night. Without a primer the shadows wore incredibly well. Even better than many of my powder shadows *with* primer. Did kind of a smokey eye with the green and the sparkly black. Probably should pick up a more wearable color next time. :p

        • the Muse

they are a little heavy and cakey but not bad at all ;-D even without primer they are strong!

  • Lisa

I just bought two of these shades on beauty.com and they look totally unwearable….really bummed out!

I bought Pucker, today. There was a 40% off sale and I decided to take the plunge and give this a try. I’ve been looking for a somewhat bold pinky-purple colour. This fits the bill, colour-wise. I really like that I can adjust the shade. I think this is the biggest selling feature of the flipstick. I do find the moisture level to be satisfactory. As for the scent, I do find it to be wax-like. I guess that is what you Ladies are referring to when mentioning the crayon-like scent. An issue I do have with this is the size of the actual lipsticks. I have full lips and everytime I apply the colour from the tube, I am afraid that it will break. Another issue I have is that the creme shade leaves a pink stain on the lips. Anyways, I paid $6.50cdn. The regular price is about $10cdn, which I find to be a bit expensive for a ds lipstick. Is it worth it? I think it is worth the sale price, but certainly not the regular price. Again, the colour adjusting feature is a hit with me, as well as the moisture level. Of course, the true test will be how the moisture will stand up to our invigorating Canadian winter 🙂 But, I won’t purchase this again. There is a fabulous Canadian brand of cosmetics based out of Montreal called Nacara. It is geared to darker complexions, so the pigmentation of the lipsticks is great. I will stick to this brand and MAC.

    • the Muse

hey melissa thank you so much for sharing your mini review! Very very helpful ;-D!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Laura

I thought you were suppose to be able to wear them seperately and together. Making three choices.

How is the consistency when mixed? What about the colors?? I bet mixed they are cuter.

    • the Muse

yup mentioned in the post you can mix and match Laura. Colors still remain fairly loud when mixed together. Consistency is heavy, mentioned in the review 🙂 hope this helps!

  • SJG

I was excited about these, but took a gander at them in K Mart and they all looked SO orangey. While orange is my favorite color, my lips and skintone don’t necessarily agree.

  • Harshleen

Too bad these are so drying….. I was really looking fwd to try these out. Thanks for the useful review Muse.

  • Majick

I thought these looked interesting. I’m not a huge fan of Cover Girl but I like to try new things because you never know when you’ll get a hit.
After this review I’m thinking I’ll pass but I do like the first set of swatches.

  • Ruthless

For me “Whisper” is the only really wearable shade in the line up-there are too many reds and oranges and not enough nudes. The colour pay off is good but you need to start out with non peely lips for sure.

I had a 4 dollar off coupon as well, I wouldn’t have paid the full 10 or 11 bucks they wanted for them

  • Lily

LOOOOL “flipsticks” is THE WORST name!! but i do like the idea of a double ended lipstick.

  • Sherry

I have 2 of these and I absolutely love them. I use some sort of lip softener (like EOS) under the lipstick and my lips don’t dry out. They last FOREVER on me – even through a snack and a meal and drinking a couple of cups of coffee. They actually sort of “stain” my lips – and I love that. I don’t have to keep applying. I do see why some people wouldn’t like them – and i respect that opinion. Thanks for letting me share! Cheers!

  • Amy

Well I received Stunner, Vixen and Minx for free from BzzAgent, and I wore Stunner all day today for the first time. I loved it! I like the dry (but not drying) factor, and I couldn’t smell the product. I’ve never worn bold colors on my lips, but I really loved the bright coral of Stunner. I’ll definitely keep wearing. Hopefully I’ll like the other shades as well.

  • Michelle

I am a black woman and actually like the way the lipstick looks on my lips. The application was very smooth for me and the color really pops on my skin. I purchased it in Stunner

  • Heather

I have tried this several times in the last 6 mths. I don’t like it at all. I like the shimmer side but nut the matte side. I mix together. Today after an hour it gunked up my lips, I literally grabbed a napkin from the glove box and wiped it off.it got sticky, clunky and funky to where when I opened my mouth you could see lipstick gunk string…so gross. I threw it out as if I don’t like it after several tries in a long period then I’ll never like it. Perhaps it is just my lip type. I’m happy it works for some.
