Lush Pow Wow Lip Scrub Review, Swatches, Photos

I happen to be old enough to remember the Urban Legend that was spread across my school about Little Mikey, the kid from the Life Cereal commercials, who mixed a deadly combination of Pop Rocks and Coke and proceeded to explode and die.

Ahhh youth. Did we ever really believe this crap?

Lush has absolutely no issues with including Pop Rocks in their new Pow Wow Lip Scrub.

Jump!

Takes popping candy, jojoba oil, organic rose hip oil, caffeine powder, and a bit of lime to create their new Pow Wow Lip Scrub.

I happen to be old enough to remember You Can’t Do That on Television (as well as Little Mikey) where anyone that uttered the words “I don’t know” would proceed to get a nice bucket full of greed sludge dumped on their head and Lush Pow Wow Scrub kinda reminds me of that rather gross slime.

Did I mention I’m a horror buff? Well, Lush Pow Wow Scrub also reminds me of the cornfest that was Troll 2. Please tell me you remember the legendary eating scenes?

Ahhh I’m just having a blast with this post today…

But on to the serious stuff…

This is a chunky scrub that doesn’t technically use sugars or salts to create the exfoliating base. When Lush says they used popping candy to create the base for the scrub they literally meant it. Pop Rocks are suspended in a thin base of jojoba oil which you can scrub on your lips. They do indeed sizzle, pop, and crack when you apply them but you’ll feel more of the “pop” should you get any in your mouth, no worries, ingesting it won’t kill you and your stomach won’t explode. Actually, it’s quite tasty!

As fun as Pow Wow is I didn’t feel it was as effective or easy to use as other scrubs Lush has. The popping candy pieces are a tad abrasive on my lips and they prove difficult to move around my mouth and “scrub” with. The added lime is tasty but it also stains the area on my lips so I have to really take a second to remove this with a washcloth less I have a lime green ring around my mouth after use.

Mmm it leaves lips soft thanks to the oils in the formula however it doesn’t successfully buff away drier skin sadly.

Lush Pow Wow Lip Scrub is fun and worthy of a pick up just for that reason along however if you’re looking for results and something that will actually scrub away drier, flaky skin on lips you might want to check out some of Lush’s other, better lip scrubs as this simply doesn’t do the trick.

I love eating pop rocks and applesauce. But I don’t think I’d want to exfoliate with them. I’ll stick with my C.O. Bigelow lip scrub.

Gimmicky fail… but totally worth it for this post, Muse! You’ve made me nostalgic for all of the pop-culture Green Slimes of my childhood LOL!

    • the Muse

haha sarah!!!!!!!!!! w00t I don’t know! ;-D totally a fun product but def does not work LOL!

OMG, Muse, you are totally right about it not being as effective as Lush’s other scrubs. I have Pow Wow, as well as Mint Julips, and the Mint Julips does a much better job of scrubbing your lips. I also notice that every now & then I have to get a popsicle stick out and mix up my scrubs — they have a tendency to dry up on the top. One you mix your scrub up, you’ll have your old scrub back.

THEY DO! they do indeed. I add a few drops of water to get them in better condition!

They’re eating her…and then they’re going to eat me! OH MY GAWWWWWWD! It looks pretty gnarly, Muse. After seeing it, I DO want to rub it all over my lips. I’m going to pick up a pot of this and keep it around for the next time an undesirable guy asks me out. (I also keep a tube of Jessie’s Girl mood lipstick in an awful shade of blue for this purpose. Guys are instantly repulsed.)

ps how funny are all the youtube tributes to that kid in the glasses “OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGG THEN THEY’RE GOING TO EAT ME! there’s even a song ;-D

There were SOOOOOOOO many great urban legends in the 70’s. I can’t possibly list them all, but my favorites were the spider eggs in the Hubba Bubba Bubble Gum, and the ground-up worms in McDonald’s hamburger meat. Also that they used kangaroo meat instead of beef.

Totally remember the Pop Rocks/Coke one…also remember the scary Bloody Mary in the mirror during sleepovers?!!! I still secretly believe in some of those urban legends LOL! I never flash my headlights at someone because of the urban legend about that…on top of all that I’m very superstitious…can’t be too careful hahaha!

LOL bonnie omg bloody marry still terrifies me ;-D hahaaaaa! and the headlights thing!

I bought this when it first came out, and I was severely disappointed. I had expected some sugar to be mixed in with it, that it wouldn’t just be pop rocks. I was afraid that I’d cut myself with a huge chunk of pop rock.

Too much water accidentally got in the container, and all of the pop rocks popped over and hardened. Now I have to go in with a pair of tweezers in order to break it all up. I’m sticking to their Sweet Lips lip scrub next time — I love that one.

OMG… You Can’t Do That on Television!!! That was my favorite show in my early teens/pre-teens. I had such a crush on Alistair.

I bought Pow Wow and have seen it in other stores, it never looks as oily as the one you have. I actually hate mine as it does nothing, if it had some oil in it.. then at least I can moisturize.. for me it was a total waste of money. Though the smell is fantastic.

Was your pow-wow really that wet or was that after you added water? If you add water, doesn’t that “pop” all the pop rocks? Mine was really dry and chunky. It was hard to use, but I love the flavor/smell.

    • the Muse

that was the way it came harley. haven’t had a prob with the popping when I added water.

I love that scrub but its kinda pricy. I went to a dollar general by my house and I got 4 full size packets for 2 bucks!!!! I’m going to try making my own(:

My Pow Wow lip scrub didn’t look like yours at all. Mine was drier and hard that after a couple of uses, I decided to just chunk it in the drawer. It was until yesterday when I was going through my stuff, I saw it again. Of course, it was a lot drier and since it is good for until end of January 2013, I decided to add more oil. The huge chunks actually helped buff away all of my flakes and adding more oil helps moisturize my lips a bit more plus I didn’t lick it off. I use a towel to wipe it off.
