The name makes me lived. So… ugh. Gender roles, can ya go away? This is like the baby version of Rodarte.

    • Freddie

      *livid

      Well, the pictures too.
It’s all making me angry right now, ha.

    • Cara

I completely agree with you, this was my first thought as well. The title is really misogynistic.

      • Freddie

        THANK YOU.

I’m getting annoyed that some people are going to be kissing this company’s butt with this collection and not realizing what this entire thing actually is.

        • the Muse

sorry freddie def not on the kissing mac’s butt bandwagon ;-D I rant about them constantly but I just wasn’t offended by this one.

          • nikki

I wasn’t offended either, I like the pictures and the collection. I think it’s really cute and Retro. I think it might cause some controversy but I think it’s completely harmless. I don’t understand what’s so offensive about it? Oh my, women cooking in 50s dresses that’s awful! Come on people!

    • Eve

I thought the same thing when I saw it. I’m not gonna go all fem-nazi on MAC and write them a million angry letters but I was kinda annoyed at seeing the collection name because I hate gender stereotypes. I don’t buy MAC anyways so I’m not losing out on much.

      • Mallory

Is this truly a gender stereotype? Mac caters to both men and women. I’m sure there will be some lovely boys partaking in this collection, as will I, most likely. I think the pictures are pretty adorable, and I enjoy to cook as well as shop, so I’m not offended as a woman.

  • Gloria

I could not believe that MAC actually named this. And what I was more surprised was when I went on Specktra to look at the pictures NOT ONE of the comments was about the offensive name.

    • the Muse

I didn’t really find it offensive. kinda whimsical, ode to the 50’s I guess, mom/housewife/mad men type of thing. my mother was/is a housewife. She stayed home with us as kids, cooked, cleaned, my dad was the bread winner…I admired her for giving up so much to raise me and my sister. She’s literally the type of person to give the shirt off her back, in the cold for her children. I’ve always thought she was a person of power for it. Of course, she lived in quite a different time and it was the norm to be a stay at home. It’s not entirely PC now but I don’t mac set out to demean anyone with the collection, seems just playful to me. And hey I love to shop shop shop just don’t let me near boiling water, I’ll burn it ;-D!

      • Danielle

I’m with you, Muse. I actually thought this seemed a little tongue-in-cheek to me, very playful.

        • the Muse

I thought so too Danielle….I honestly don’t think MAC set out to piss off womankind with this collection ;-D!

          • Eve

I just think they should have thought about it more. They promote men wearing makeup (which is awesome) so they should know about breaking gender roles. I’m not really raging over this but I definitely knew quite a few would.

          • kiwikiwidragon

I think we are over dramatic over what is offensive in general as a society. America is too diversified to really focus on who gets offended by what. Almost anything can be considered offensive now a days. As long as animals, kids, and old people are safe, Take a deep breath and realize that it isn’t so bad. There really are bigger fish to fry.

      • Gloria

I love the styles and makeup of the 50s and I do admire the nostalgic feel they’re trying to recreate but M.A.C. could have picked a better name/photos and still kept the same theme. I think there are some really interesting colors in the collection I just wish they would have thought it through a little bit more.

  • tiny

the chick in the pink dress reminds me of whitney houston’s makeup in the “I wanna dance with somebody” music video… ahh memories! 😀

  • Stephanie C.

It’s so so so cute! The packaging makes me want some already! I’m not sure if I’ll like the colors (hard to tell in the pic), but tempted to get a lipstick, eye shadow quad (in particular the one on the very right), or blush with my gift card~ Can’t wait for February (or just more info) to come!

  • SJ

    Freddie: thank-you!
This is nearly as bad as their Juarez campaign.
MAC is really losing me altogether.

    • Nana

I hadn’t heard of the Juarez campaign and I just looked it up~ WOW! That’s just horrible.. Makes you wonder who’s REALLY running MAC….

    • Freddie

      You’re welcome!

I mean, Juarez was really bad and now I’m like… okay, really? I don’t know what bugs me more, haha. The name or the photos.

  • Sarah

    The Tendertones look lovely!
The packaging so so, anything new from MAC is exciting, so long as there are a few stand out products!:)

  • Maggie

Woohoo, return of Kissable lip colors! I love them 🙂

I agree with you, Muse, this campaign seems pretty whimsical and tongue-in-cheek to me, I don’t really find it offensive.

    • the Muse

agreed maggie 🙂 def not offended by it, just seems like it’s supposed to be whimsical and a play on the trend of all the neon shades we are seeing for Spring at the moment.

  • Regina

A collection I’m actually excited about!! I’ll definitely check this out.
I love the name and appreciate a tribute to the women of this period that cooked and shopped for their families…nothing wrong with that!! We still do the same things today 🙂

    • the Muse

agreed regina ;-D My mum did it and she still takes care of my dad..washes his clothes, cooks for him, cleans for him, etc…I’m very proud of the woman she is. Takes a very strong person to give unselfish care like that! I know I couldn’t do it!

      • kiwikiwidragon

My mom was almost a total stay at home mom too, she taught aerobics when we went to school, but was always our caregiver and there to pick us up, we were not rich people either, its all about priorities and how you choose to live. I find all MAC campaigns to be garish and mostly ugly but that is MY opinion and stretches beyond this one campaign. They don’t offend me, in the actual sense of the word.

  • Michelle

OK, this is the dumbest MAC question ever. Please keep in mind that this is a question from someone that doesn’t own even one piece of MAC makeup, not that I don’t like it but I just can’t afford it right now.

Why, oh why does MAC release a new makeup collection every .009 seconds? I just don’t understand it. The last collections I read about were Glitter & Ice and Iris Apfel, now I’m hearing something else already, why do the consumers support this? I mean, just how many colors does MAC have to play with?

My only guess is that there are people out there who do not only wear MAC but collect it and therefore the different packaging is designed for them. I mean no offense to the MAC fans by the way, I’ve just never seen makeup marketed this way before.

    • the Muse

I kinda like the variety aspect michelle but sadly mac quality has suffered a bit the last year and half. So actually all the collections should probably slow down a little and they should out a little more work into the formula :-/ outside of that mac has always had a running reputation for releasing quite a large selection of LE products. for mac fans it’s exciting but it does get tedious as time goes on as you feel like it’s alot of rehash!

  • breyerchic04

I think it’s partially that I just like spreads like this, but oooh I’m excited about this collection. And yay tendertones, though I think i have the HIP shades like two of those.

  • nicolle

Looks like an interesting collection. I like their hair styles. I am not taking offense to it at all. It’s just make up and it is meant to be fun and not taken so seriously 🙂

  • Ester

The packaging looks adorable, and I can’t wait to try tendertones. I loved the Loreal HIP knock off type balms, but those are all gone, sadly! So I will try tendertones and hopefully love them just as much. I also might try my first ever creamblend blush!

  • Sun

The names are annoying. But the excuses people are making for MAC are worse. I see nothing retro about this – the model is certainly not 50s era retro, the ad design miiight be 60s. There’s nothing in it to be a “tribute” to housewives – if so, being a housewife is definitely more than just shopping and cooking, so it would fail there.

I hate the attitude that fun things should be exempt from criticism for perpetuating gender roles and general sexism. Everything is a product and maker of how society treats itself.

MAC didn’t put more thought into it than it being makeup and gearing towards women and duuuh women love to shop shop shop and cook cook cook – so theres no excuses. Seriously, calling people femnazis is sooo much worse than the ad campaign, which turns an annoying campaign into misogyny – because of the reactions of people defending it

    • the Muse

eve wasn’t calling anyone a fem nazi she was saying she wouldn’t go “all fem nazi” on mac. She def didn’t say anyone was a fam nazi sun. we all have our opinions on the collection which is fine but def don’t see anyone calling anyone names on here so let’s not bring it to that level.

    • Nikki

Well, actually the definition of Retro refers to, clothes or music whose style or design is imitative of those of the recent past. So yes I would say the add is quiet Retro. I don’t think MAC meant any harm by it, people just like to complain. Relax people!

    • Lindsey

I agree with you, Sun. People forget what a long, hard struggle it was/is for women’s rights. Having a make up brand mock it is not really high up on my list of things that I want to see.

The name just seems so unnecessary. I mean, why not just name it something else that doesn’t have such a loaded history. I think that most people are past the mindset that a woman’s life should revolve around cooking and shopping, but we’re not far enough past it where something like this is okay. Combined with the Juarez collection, it kind of gives me the impression that the people at MAC aren’t really where they should be in terms of gender relations. This is 2012, after all.

Certainly, the name of a make up collection is not the end of the world, but it is disappointing that so many people don’t understand the implications of this. Just because makeup is unimportant in the grand scheme of things doesn’t mean that no one should even think about what’s going on.

    • SJ

I *wish* they had simply made this into some form of retro. Making out like all women want to do is “shop shop shop and cook cook cook” is horribly misogynistic and harks back to the 1950s where women were expected to be baby factories. MAC likes to make out like it is a brand for all genders, so why specifically mock the gender role of women?

If this was a collection that embraced women’s empowerment – such as using their own money to “shop shop shop” or to perhaps embrace cooking as a fun pastime rather than something they must do repetitively, day in day out, “cook cook cook…” perhaps then I wouldn’t be so offended.

Retro theme need not come with the misogyny of the time.

  • Musebeliever

I think I won’t buy it just for the name of the collection and the visuals that go with it. Seriously I don’t believe in MAC anymore. they used to produce good collections but the quality has dropped so much in the 2 last years that I don’t see the need to buy Mac except for some classics in their permanent range.

    • the Muse

mostly for me quality went down drastically…I’d say two years is about right Muse. The quality on the eyeshadows isn’t nearly the same as it was!!!!!!!!!!!

    • SJ

Agreed. I’m not buying anything from MAC ever since the Juarez campaign, but for me this is the clincher. I was thinking I’d go back to them for their concealer, but no. They’re not having any more of my money.

  • Nikki

I agree the quality of their eye shadows aren’t as good as they used to be! I have some MAC shadows that are comparable to my wet n wild shadows. And actually I prefer wet n wild!

    • the Muse

they are crap lately nikki! I agree some wet n wild singles are actually BETTER than mac lately. I dunno what happened but the formula is very dry, chalky, and just difficult to blend. I don’t understand what the hell happened!

      • Amanda

I think what happened is, they started to release WAYY too many products. With that you have counter production. Quanity is great if the quality is great. If not, you can become a sinking ship quickly. I’ve purchased a bunch of stuff and the eyeshadows in the collections have been poor performers recently. ESPECIALLY the quads. Anything that has been released in quads has become a complete disaster. I have not purchased quads.

On to the product here. I agree with those who said that this is a retro thing more then an offensive thing. The first thought that came to mind with this add was early 60’s, Ed Sullivan is coming on tonight. Kids are waiting at the TV, and Mom is in the Kitchen cooking waiting for the hubby. That type thing. Yes the time is different. Based on MAC’s other collections, it doesn’t seem to be a Rodante line, it’s just tongue and cheek to echo some of you.

        • the Muse

“especially the quads” I concur Amanda. I really wanna agree and say yes it’s b/c they released too much in too little of a time period. BUT they have always done various collections, granted it seems a lot more lately…but still they have always been one for releasing a million collections at once and things ran smoothly. Suddenly, about a year and a half to two years suddenly they quality just took a NOSE dive. The shadows are particularly bad bad bad lately but I also have run across lipsticks that aren’t entirely fabulous either. The lipglasses seem to have remained the same so far. I have to say I cannot believe how bad it has gotten. I speak to reader’s daily and some folks agree but more so than not people say they don’t feel like it changed and I just feel like I’m going nuts b/c truly this isn’t the quality I know from mac. I think Holiday Collections are PARTICULARLY BAD! This year was awful. I looked back on some of my old Holiday Collections and you can just look at the shadows in a palette and see how great they are no need to even swatch them.

          Sigh.

I thought so too to be honest, I’m not easily offended, this just didn’t really offend me and I doubt mac set out to offend anyone with it.

          • Amanda

The holiday collection this year was abysmal. The only thing I purchased from it was the cool palette, bc it’s the only one that I thought was wearable. 4 out of 6 isn’t bad. the 2 shades I thought were unwearable were snowball (that white iridescent shimmer color) and the Idol Eyes (which is lustre finish and a regular so that meant nothing). The rest of the palettes were worthless as was everything else in the collection. Which is sad because the whole set if made well had mega potential to be the best they’ve done in a while.

        • SJ

Retro really doesn’t need to mean misogynistic as well. You can have plenty of retro without ever touching the harmful gender roles of the 1950s.

  • Melissa

I think they should have used male androgynous models for the marketing photos. That could have been cool and blurred the gender roles and mac would not have taken so much flack for the collection.

    • the Muse

that’s a good idea melissa….! actually males and females shopping/cooking as well! A hot man in an apron with some beautiful makeup one would totally melt me ;D!

      • Cj

*Gets apron out* (in sultry voice k?) Well hello 😉

Lmao! I’ll be the first guy to admit I love shop shop shopping and I can cook cook cook 😀

        • the Muse

LMAO ;-D I think you’d just rock these shades. I need a photo email me ;-D but can you cook cook cook cooking? ;D! I burn boiling water myself *pats self on back* thank you, it’s a talent.

          • Cj

I definitely can lol 😀 My mom’s been cooking for about 30 years and she taught me the best way to a man’s heart is his stomach! 😛

          • the Muse

I’ll come over you teach me. No more Trader Joe heat and serve haha ;D!

    • Sara

OMG! That would have been A-MAZING! And probably wouldn’t have pissed anyone off. It doesn’t offend me, actually. (Though I’m not easily offended anyway.) I see this as more a caricature of traditional roles and using males models would have really enhanced that.

I AM the stereotype. Well, kinda. 40, SAHM of 3, etc. (with Manic Panic’d hair, tattoos and piercings. ;D ) I’m also independent, strong, and intelligent. And I’m doing what I’ve always wanted to do NOT because I have to, but because it’s my choice. And a very valid/rewarding one.

All politics aside, I love the colors. I must have the quads!

      • the Muse

go on sara ;-D good on you! My mum was a sahm too and I think it really shaped my sister and I into who we are today ;-D

  • Marina

I am so NOT a MAC girl, but those purpley-pink lipsticks are calling my name! That’s about it though…But those colors! Yes please…

  • Nikki

My favorites are so Vein and innocence beware! I also like the nail polishes. I don’t really like any of the eye shadows. All in all a pretty cool collection 🙂

  • Melissa

I love shopping and cooking but like a lot of promo pics these look lovely. Hopefully the quality is there -if not I’ll save my pennies and buy more NYX :))

  • Bertie

    First of all, OMGTENDERTONES.
Second, I wish they had gone all-the-way campy into John Waters territory.

  • Ruth

wow- what a that was! I’ll say that I liked the retro pic’s of mom cooking. My mom would come home from work, kick off her heels, put on her comfy slippers and begin to make dinner while still in her dress clothes. I’m not really seeing how this is any different; it’s just mirroring real life events. It doesn’t offend me at all. I was raised by a single parent who could do it all. She showed me how to be responsible and do everything that I could to make my life as awesome as possible with what I had.

As for the products, some of the lipsticks look just like GaGa’s Viva Glam releases. The outside packaging is adorable but I wish that it extended to the actual product its self instead of the usual black.

  • diane

ohh love that quick sizzle lipstick.

i think this campaign is really cute! i like the models and the pictures =)

  • Stephanie C.

So tempted to get a lot of these! Maybe the top 2 eyeshadow quads (orange frost sounds so pretty!), and need to try out all of the lipsticks and kissable lip colours!

I’m even tempted to get the blackened brown gel liner, although I still have my blacktrack left. I’ve really been getting into brown liners… and this sounds like a perfect mix!

I guess I won’t know what I should spring for until I test these colours out on me at the store. I’m super excited for it to come out though 🙂 I love these colors/products way more than all the Winter stuff~

  • Shelly

Some people have too much time on their hands. If you’re offended by the name of a make-up collection, it is time to open your eyes. The collection looks fun, can’t wait to see it in person! Thanks Muse!

    • SJ

Open our eyes to… what exactly? If we were living in a world where people of all genders were on equal footing, I wouldn’t have any reason to be offended by this.

  • Ashley

This sounds like…a barbie doll themed collection? I’m not quite sure…playing house? Something like that. I’m tempted to agree with the first few comments, but some of the pictures are so ridiculous and silly (cooking necklaces? huh?) that I think it’s intended more as a joke. I’m not really offended myself, but I understand how someone -could be-.

Anyway, the colors looks wonderful! I <3 pink lipstick so much, I'm very excited for Innocence Beware!'s re-release and Naughty Saute. Pepto pink..sounds pretty great to me.

Also Tendertones!!! Woo! These happened before I was into makeup (and into MAC). I'd love to get the sheer yellow one.

  • Lisa S.

Ok, I’m 47 (oh Horror!) Much older than probably most of you on here. I work full time with my husband in a business we both work equally hard at.
I’m also a crazy sci-fi, fantasy nerd. LOVE to be hyper feminine, LOVE to cook and l LOVE to shop. I also LOVE to play Gears of War, Halo and Call of Duty. Gender roles are what you make of them and it is up to you to teach, not to ask makeup companies to do it for you. I’m not offended by this campaign in the least, I think it’s cute and kitschy and why do I have a sneaking suspicion that some of you would be more accepting of this if it looked like TokiDoki but had exactly the same campaign. (picture me muttering something about “overly idealistic young whippersnappers”)
Whew! Rants over! And I want’s me some Tender Tones and Nail Polishes…… :0)

    • Lindsey

I don’t recall anyone saying that it’s MAC’s job to teach people about gender roles. No one is claiming that the make up collection should be called “Ms.” or “Bra burning”. It has nothing to do with teaching.

I just don’t think that “being kitschy” is a good excuse to use such outdated stereotypes. Shouldn’t we have moved past this by now?

      • SJ

Agreed! Why are there no men in this picture? Why does the imagery suggest that only women should be cooking and shopping? This is beyond ridiculous.

  • Lucy Hollander

People are getting way to worked up over this collection. Its just a makeup collection, don’t take it too seriously! Anyway, the colors are gorgeous! I’m a bit addicted to those lipsticks and the Shop and Drop eye shadow quad!

  • Ashley

I really don’t get why people are comparing this to Rodarte… Like I said above, I can understand some being mildly offended, but I really think the intention was more joke-oriented, whimsical… Like a barbie doll.

This is in no way comparable to Rodarte. At all. At all.

    • Lindsey

I think that people compare them because they’re both instances where MAC dropped the ball on women’s issues. They’re similar in kind, but not really in scope. I agree that the Rodarte one is way worse.

      • SJ

Rodarte was easily way worse – turning the theme of hundreds of dead women into a beauty collection FFS – but that doesn’t mean this should be ignored.
Making out like one of MAC’s slip ups was worse so therefore this one may be ignored is derailment, and doesn’t approach the issue. Together both issues, as Lindsey put it, show that MAC choose to overlook some *extremely* important issues for modern women.
Women’s liberation is still damned important today, especially if you live in America.

        • Ashley

As I stated though, the overall look of this is whimsical..like a barbie doll. I understand how someone *could* be offended, but really, I don’t think this is worth getting upset over.

I wasn’t saying that this should be ignored because Rodarte was worse. I’m not sure how you got that out of what I said.

  • Alix

Had the theme been “Shop Shop Shop” OR “Cook Cook Cook” it would’ve been stronger, clearer and more fun. The idea is meant to be completely kitschy, though, so I marvel at the number of people who are actually getting offended by this. Good grief.

  • jackieg02

I guess I’m not easily offended…cause I don’t see whats so wrong about it.

  • Ruthless

Stereotypes exist because they are actually reality. Women still do most of the shopping, child rearing and cooking. (not me, can’t cook worth a damn)

I’m not offended by this. MAC has been really grasping at straws for the past year or so with it’s inspirations for collections shop shop cook cook is silly but not really promoting gender roles.

Rodarte was offensive to some but for different reasons, as it seemed to trivialize the rape and torture of Mexican factory workers.

    • Ashley

Well said Ruthless! I agree 100% with this. I’m not offended by it either.

Barbie dolls / baby dolls / the color pink / high heels and so forth don’t offend me and never have. It’s all optional.

Rodarte was (mostly by the designers, but also by MAC) pretty much a slap in the face to women everywhere (c’mon, a lipstick named Factory, a blood red spatter mineralized eyeshadow, promo images that look like women with black eyes?). This is nothing like that.

  • Jessica

Ugh, I found the idea behind this collection extremely offensive. Not just the way others have been reading into it, but when I first read it I took it to be sarcasm – mocking women who actually do enjoy shopping or cooking and making them seem shallow and brainless (those models look like zombies!). Of course either way it’s gross.

And I can’t understand all the folks telling people to “get over it.” It’s not “just makeup,” it’s yet another example of something primarily thought of as part of feminine culture being viewed as inherently shallow. Because when women conform to gender stereotypes (ie care about their looks), they are themselves seen as shallow (I’m sure all of us have experienced being judged for being into beauty), but if they don’t then they’re seen as weirdos. And you can’t be whimsical and make light of issues like these when they are still so real.

Considering this is a company that used a transexual as a spokesperson, I don’t know how anyone can get their panties (or boy shorts or thongs or however you roll) in a bunch. As Foghorn Leghorn says, it’s a joke, son! It would be WAY more offensive if a very traditional company like Elizabeth Arden had released a collection with this name.

Comparing this to the Rodarte debacle…puh-lease…can we officially say Rodarte for MAC is the makeup Godwin and be done with it?

As other posters have stated, MAC’s near-constant releases of “limited edition” collections are the most offensive thing to me. A company that makes a big deal of promoting sustainability and recycling just negates all that and shows it’s solely a marketing ploy when they artifically pump up demand for products.

You all are funny. Mac is a MAKEUP company. You know, a company that makes us think that we can’t be beautiful without their lipgloss and eyeshadow. You’re all complaining about a sexist ad, by a cosmetics company. It’s so baffling to me. Like an oxymoron. Think of what makeup is in general and you’ll realize it’s something not to take so seriously. For the non-makeup artists here, collecting makeup is as GIRLY as it gets. So just enjoy your hobby and buy backups of the tender tones you love and relax people. Obviously rodarte was especially bad because of Jaurez but this is not close. At all. Makeup collecting girls upset because a company says we like to shop shop shop. LOL

Anyways, my list for Vera and Shop,Cook Mac are huge!!!!!!!!! I’m so excited. My first big collection haul.

I think it’s voluntary schocking… but also just for fun ! This collection is totally different from the pastel collections we have on counters : Lancôme, Chanel, Dior, Nars, Benefit, Guerlain, Clarins, Armani for example. Don’t forget it’s a M.A.C collection ! Iris Apfel, Daphnee Guinness, Gareth Pugh, Cindy Shermann, well all M.A.C collections are shocking in a way, even Glitter and Ice whose ambassador is a gay -and so cute and talented an ice skater -Johnny Weir. As a French beauty addict, I am not schocked at all by this name or collection, to me make-up is an art and also a hobby, that’s M.A.C has been trying to make for years I guess.

    Like seriously?
I don’t condone the comments that dislike the collection’s theme if they were insulting the intelligence of those that weren’t offended. or just belittling people. But this post comments now are very insulting to those that disliked the theme, insinuating that only the easily offended dislike it, that we’re young and naive, or somehow don’t appreciate housewives/our mothers. Meanwhile, the dislike comments continue to say they won’t be purchasing the collection but they don’t make comments to someone else’s being. And honestly, it’s because they believe they have Muse’s support because she doesn’t dislike the collection. I also didn’t like her saying it’s cause she’s not so “easily offended”.

We come from a legitimate place. And most of the comments are offended at MAC, not other potential customers. So, why so defensive and belittling? Ugh.

I am so confused by why anyone would be offended by the NAME of this collection?! I guess it’s probably just because people just like to get offended by everything nowadays.
Even the verbiage MAC uses to describe the story behind the collection says, “EVERYONE likes to shop.” It doesn’t say anything about barefoot and pregnant women, slaving away in the kitchen?!
I think the collection is gorgeous. The palette of colors are beautiful and wearable. The inspiration of the collection is whimsical. MAC is right; everyone does love to shop. Everyone I know loves to shop. Even a trip to the grocery store is fun. And in the world we live, social media, television and movies are all promoting that? What’s next, are all of you going to ban the Home SHopping Network and the Food Network because it’s “misogynistic?’ Really? C’mon, people. Lighten up. The world is a fun place.
