Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows Review, Swatches, Photos

Maybelline has consistently released some very high quality products under their Eye Studio Collection for the last two years or so now. Possibly the best release to date is their brand new, affordable, crazy cool Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows. I’ve seen these gems for as little as $5.99 at drugstores and when there’s a BOGO (Buy 1, Get 1 50% Off) you know its a solid gold beauty budget.

Take a look!

Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows come in ten shades (please can there be more now?) that are available from $5.99-$7.99 at drugstores. These are a cream shadows that promises a 24 hour wear and in many cases you’re looking at a solid wear time along those lines from morning until night with little to no creasing, fading, or smudging on certain shades.

Bad to the Bronze

Tenacious Teal

Edgy Emerald

Audacious Asphalt

Pomegranate Punk

Painted Purple

Fierce & Tangy

Bold Gold

Too Cool

The formula has a certain density but still has a creamy, soft feel once it warms up. I find the product will wear well from morning until evening (8 to 10 hours of wear) without primer. I didn’t have a hiccup with creasing issues and it wore true to color without fading for that time as well. I can get a full day out of it and well into the evening without any issues. Truly their promise of long wear absolutely held true for me (I have drier lids, not oily ones but I’ve heard similar success stories with those who have oily lids). Dry down time is just right here as the product remains dewy to the touch just long enough for me to build the color up and blend out without drying down too quickly but still quick enough that it isn’t “wet” for long after application.

Blending proves easy enough on the shimmer shades (there are four matte, creamy shades and six shimmer/metallic shades). I can easily use a finger to blend color out easily without issues however the cream shades sans shimmer proved a little more challenging as they applied patchy and uneven plus I found it difficult to build the color up.

Texture is on par with MAC Paint Pots but seemed a little thinner in consistency but not so much you’d notice the difference. They work great on their own in most cases for a wash of bold eyeshadow or as a base for pigments or eyeshadows. I didn’t try them as an eyeliner but I imagine if you took a little time with them you can easily multitask them as an eyeliner as well.

(Swatched left to right: Bad to the Bronze, Audacious Asphalt, and Too Cool)

(Swatched left to right: Edgy Emerald, Bold Gold, and Fierce & Tangy)

(Swatched left to right: Pomegranate Punk, Painted Purple, and Tenacious Teal)

The heavy glass jar are much like MAC Paint Pots and are .14 oz. As you see the value is a good one considering MAC gives you .17 oz for $17.50 which means you can haul three of these or more (depending where you buy) where as you can only get one Paint Pot for that cost!

The cream shades as I mentioned above were a little bit of a bust. Painted Purple, Emerald, and Fierce & Tangy all proved a bit disappointing as I had issues with blending these out as they went on patchy and unevenly and weren’t as vibrant as the shimmer shades. Fierce & Tangy was a shade I was very excited about but the actual formula proves disappointing for me. On the upside they work nicely as a base and give a little boost to shadow and pigment shades.

(On eyes: Pomegranate Punk)

(On eyes: Audacious Asphalt)

(On eyes: Tenacious Teal)

(On eyes: Bad to the Bronze)

(On eyes: Bold Gold)

Overall, these are a solid performing cream eyeshadow with an incredible wear time. The formula, the price, and the nice range of bright colors proved very exciting. I just wished for more nude, natural colors! Maybe next round!

These are without a doubt Muse Approved for purchase.

Well done Maybelline!

Disclaimer: I purchased 7 of the shades featured in this post. The other two were proved to me as press samples for review. For more information about press samples please see my disclaimer/disclosure statement!

    Ohhh. Thanks Muse!
I have not seen these in my local stores yet .
The pomegranate punk appealed to me and looks great on you. I usually shy away from creams..I’m just a hair clumsy with the application. At this price, Ill consider trying.

    • the Muse

hey debbi try a an eyeshadow brush hun and paint it on ;-D it makes application a little easier ;D!

  • Marina

My friend got me Tenacious Teal for my birthday the other day, but I haven’t gotten to use it yet! Now I’m excited! I think it’ll look great with my favorite combo of Urban Decay’s Homegrown and Painkiller shades over it!

      • Marina

Just tried it out! Wow! It even applied nicely with a brush…typically I don’t have much luck with that! Looks fab. Can’t wait to test out wear tomorrow!
P.S.- You look totally gorgeous! Pomegranate Punk is great on you!

        • the Muse

you are too kind marina ;-D <3 you! ;-D!!!!!!!!!!! Glad you likey! Great stuff girl! Bogo this week too at the drugstore so check out more shades :D!

  • cat

I’ve been trying to find “Tough as Taupe” and “Bad to the Bronze” at my local drugstores for a while now. I wonder if the formula will be similar to the formula for their gel eyeliners. That’s what they remind me of seeing them in the container.

  • Stephanie C.

I picked up the Gold and Bronze, but definitely want the Pomegranate now! I love the shade, and how it’s not too red~!

      • Stephanie C

Just picked it up today and I LOVE IT! I’m wearing it over the gold, and I have to say it’s my fav of the 3 I got! I think it’s even perfect for everyday! So happy I decided to get it 🙂 Thank you so much for your pics!!

  • JenJ

I have 3 (bronze, pomegranate punk and audacious asphalt) and debating on the teal and the taupe. The teal looks soooooo pretty!

  • Lulubelle

I’ve got Bold Gold and really like it! My lids are oily and it did crease without primer on me. With primer, no problems. I was considering Fierce and Tangy but will pass after reading your review. Now considering Asphalt and Pomegranate Punk. But yes, they need more neutrals!

  • efranftw

I’m wearing Pomegranate Punk right now. Generally I love the formula, but have slight problems with color payoff. Obviously, the Painted Purple is the worst, but even Tough as Taupe and Pomegranate Punk are on the weaker side. I haven’t tried yet, but swatched, Fierce & Tangy to find awesome pigmentation, though.

    • the Muse

had issues with F&T efran…swatches good but it applies patchy and uneven, I had hard time building, same for painted purple…I was good on pom though, that one worked for me!

  • Michelle

I’m joining the commenters here who are liking Pomegranate Punk (looks great on you, by the way Muse!) even though I normally shy away from cream shadows. It looks like it won’t make my eyes look too red if that makes any sense. Will probably use these for lining rather than an allover eye color.

    • the Muse

aw thanks michelle <3! I hated creams for a long time myself but now I can't get enough of 'em for some reason!

  • Regina

I have taupe and bronze and really like them. I have to work quickly before they dry but once they’re on they don’t budge.

  • Christine

Ohhh Muse, what is on your lips in your pomegranate & teal pictures? Both are so gorgeous!

I picked up Tough as Taupe & on my ultra oily lids w/ no primer I had creases after 4/5 hours :(. But, lasted far longer w/ primer & acts as a great base for powder eyeshadows, so I’m not complaining for that price :D.

    • the Muse

oh gosh that was an LE Clarins Joli Rouge shade Christine sorry hope I didn’t make you lem too much 🙂 thank you btw! still for oily lids 4/5 is fairly good dontcha think? 🙂

  • Jenn

I love these…I have a bunch…oddly enough the orange, fierce and tangy, is my favorite! I haven’t had issues with applying it, I love it! I heard the purple has been a problem, haven’t tried it yet. I got those two plus taupe, pomegranate, teal and emerald. I got them at CVS a whileback for BOGO 1/2 off, I kept going back to get more for fear they would sell out, after I tried one, LOL. I want the bronze and gold now too, but they are out everywhere! Ulta had a sale and the display was cleaned bare. :-/

  • Jess

I have super greasy lids so I don’t know how they would wear on me but between these and the L’Oreal Infalliable, which would you say wore longer or better? (read some reviews that the Infalliable ones did crease on someone else, so they’d probably crease on me too)

    • the Muse

about the same wear time jess for me, drier lids, about 10 hours without a hiccup and went into 12 in some cases. Applied at around 6am and wore through to around 10-11pm and one night 3am as I got in late!

  • Daisyv316

I only have the taupe color and I use it everyday! Just one swipe and that is all I need no shadow on top. By the way I saw that that’s the only one you missed 🙁

  • Kathleen

I’ve only tried one so far, Fierce and Tangy and I actualy LOVE it, so if it’s considered one of the underperforming shades then I am really really excited to try the others! I’m wearing it now actually, and it looks good even though I smudged it on super fast while getting ready for work haha! Yesterday it lasted (without any primer) through my seven hour shift and my treacherous snowy walk home (haha) without ANY creasing or fading. This has never happened to me with any eye product before, drugstore or high end, so I am pretty stoked, cuz I’ve got kind of weird creasy oily lids. Haha I feel like I just wrote a novel, but I’ve gotta say, I am super impressed with this product!!

  • Quinctia

I got the taupe just for lining, the consistency I saw in reviews led me to it, and then I got the teal because I cannot resist teal (and the purple’s been universally reviewed as the worst shade).

They swatched really nicely, and I’m glad for it. The only question is whether to go natural/neutral tomorrow and try lining with the taupe or do another teal eye!

  • Gloria

I got the Tough as Taupe color and I really like it. I love cream eyeshadows/Paint Pots that I can just throw on in a hurry. The taupe has the tiniest bit of shimmer to it but you can hardly tell. I really like the Pomegranate Punk color too I’ll have to check that out!

  • Mia D

Count me off the train. I just didn’t get these. They’re so dark that they don’t work except for as eye liner, they smear (supposedly you need to let these “dry”; I didn’t), and the color range other wise is wonky. Wtf was Maybelline thinking!? If there was a plain white, cream, and tan without the shimmer then I’d buy them up. Other wise I just see these working as eyeliners which defeats the “use this as both!!!” tag. WTF Maybelline WTF?

  • gliteratti

I want to pick up pom but it is sold out everywhere around here! The asphalt look gorgeous on you.

  • Sabrinna

i have tough as taupe, fierce and tangy, tenacious teal and pomegranate punk. I love tough as taupe for work (especially in a hurry!). and love fierce and tangy when i just want a quick bold look (i had the opposite of yours though muse, mine was easy to build up and blended out well either with brush or my finger, and also it didnt crease after 12 hours on my oily lids without any primer. i really love it!) i have yet to try and make tenacious teal work without making me look like a clown. but pomegranate punk looks amazing for a colored smokey eye. 🙂

  • Patti

Love love love the pomegranate punk on you! Had one of these in my cart and put it back, I am going back and stocking up!

  • Majick

THese look great and I’m not even into cream shadows LOL. (Although I admit I love Stila’s Taffy as a base for a no makeup look.) I also love seeing your smiling face showing off your beautiful colors! That Pom Punk has my name all over it, it really looks excellent on you.

    • the Muse

aw shucks thanks majick! you’re lovely! I don’t like creams either but somehow someway I was converted a few years ago now can’t get enough of ’em!

  • Jo

I live for these! I’m a bit lazy sometimes with makeup but I can just throw this on and go for a full day and then some. Plus the built in primer aspect keeps my liner on great as I have oily eyelids. I use the taupe one as a primer on its own sometimes as it would be too dark if I really built it up, instead it just gives my eyelids a slightly tanner color.

  • Blair

These look amazing on you, Muse! And I love the lip color you’re wearing in the pictures, especially in the first one – gorgeous! <3

  • Danielle

Muse- these look great on you! Especially the teal! I’m still trying to find these out by me. (Checked Ulta, but they were all gone!)

  • theRothstanator

I also hope that they make more neutral colors for when I’m in a hurry in the morning! The Gold looks beautiful on you! I am gonna have to pick that one and Too Cool as a BOGO when I’m off my no buy!

  • Patti

Hey Muse, I bought the pomegranate plum, asphalt and the bold gold today. Love them! They are similar to Mary Kay’s cream eyeshadows, not as pricey, which, on a side note, I have been wondering why you don’t review Mary Kay. Is it the nature of the “consultant” beast? LOL. Just wondering…they also have wonderful eye makeup remover. I happen to have a friend who supplies me with bits and bobs. Anyway, sorry to go off on that tangent. Just been meaning to ask is all. : ) These are just as great tho.

  • christmas

I’ve had a hard time finding these… my local cvs had them, then they were gone. I picked up the purple and teal.
Today I was driving around near my school and went to walgreens for cereal and found a display again. I got pomegranate punk and the orange one. I was digging the orange but it’s like you said, Muse! The formula isn’t as good as pomegranate! I must get the gold though, totally forgot about that because I have all the gold/bronze shades of Buxom’s stay there shadow and these seem similar minus the cute doggy names!

  • Jazz

Welp I know what Im getting next time Im at work … pomegranate punk and bodacious bronze will soon be mine 😀

  • Dora

These are still sold out at my local walgreens but I ordered bad to the bronze and bold gold online after seeing the swatches~ Thanks for the swatches + reviews! Hopefully my local drugstores will restock soon. :]

  • Ayumi

Stupid question: but I’m looking for an orange corrector for my undereye circles before putting my concealer on. Is this super shimmery?(fierce and tangy)
    Thanks a bunch!

  • Shannon

I just got the one in Too Cool and it is a nice white, shimmery color. However, I’m not too sure about the color payoff. I applied it with the ELF Contour Brush but maybe it will be better with another brush:) This was my first experience with cream eyeshadows
