How Exactly Does Bobbi Brown Come Up with the Names for Some of Her Products?

I sometimes wonder who names my favorite lipstick or my favorite product….I mean do they hire one specific person to name an entire line of lipsticks?

“Hey here’s our newest lipstick line, name these k?”

That would be my dream job.

Like who named NARS Orgasm, Orgasm? Or Super Orgasm?

Although I was thinking some glamorous lady with a corner office and an incredible view of Manhattan was sitting behind her ultra chic desk thinking up names for products….

That isn’t actually the case!

Bobbi let’s us in on her trade secret naming technique on her blog Everything Bobbi.

How did her Extra Skincare Collection get its name?

Simple.

She was sitting in the car on the way back home from skiing, thinking out loud she was wondering what she should call her new extra moisturizing skincare, when her son said from the back seat, “Why not just call it Extra?”

Exactly.

It’s sometimes that simple.

The story made me smile today.

No view of Manhattan, no incredible office, just a kid giving us the simplicity of it all.

Visit www.everythingbobbi.com and learn all the little “extras” about her.

Now about that job of me naming your products Bobbi….I don’t need a corner office, maybe just a desk right beside you, yeah?

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. I hear ya about how do these cosmetics get their names? Some companies are a little OTT like UD and their drug and alcohol laden names, and Illasmasqua and their hooker/bodily fluid names..(“load” for a nail polish color that looks like it, too)

Haha, you’ve just described my job (except for the Bobbi Brown part. And the ultra chic part too, sigh).

There’s actually a position in the advertising and marketing industry called a copywriter and we spend all day weeping over taglines, writing texts that suit the art direction and, depending on the employer, even coming up with product names! 🙂

I have a similar task of trying to come up with names for a sci-fi story I’m planning to write. Go with Earth names or invent alien-sounding things? What will the planets be called? Somehow I think naming makeup would be easier!

oh my god you’re my hero, writing a sci-fi ;-D hehe want help naming the new and exciting planets? ;D!

Hehe, I’ve always wanted to write a story but this came up from watching Farscape — a wonderful series (ended far too soon!) but I kept thinking, “I want THIS to happen, and THAT” and rather than stick to fanfic (which I would butcher anyway), I decided to branch off and create my own world.

I need a name for Humans 2.0, that split from Earth and populated a planet (and a name for that planet too). And a name for a biodome planet that houses refugees/rebels.. like a name meaning ‘sanctuary.’

        This is all preliminary planning!!!

le sigh please don’t mention farscape, I’m still mourning. hmmmmm brain storming ahead…! LOL ;-D can I get back to you? I’m positive I come up with some incredibly clever names that will probably be wacky as hell ;D!

I work for a well known food brand and part of my job is coming up with names for the new products we launch! Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it can be really difficult. Especially when you come up with a great one, only to have the legal department tell you it can’t be trademarked for some reason or another! If I get really stuck I will sometimes enlist the help of a copywriter. I have to admit, it’s kind of cool to be able to go into the supermarket and find a product you have named!
