NYX Cream Shadow Review & Swatches

NYX has released not one, not two, but 24 shades of Cream Eyeshadow. Phew!

These shimmering, pigmented cream shadows promise all day wear and intense color payoff with a crease free, water resistant formula.

I was excited to check them out to say the least.

Take a look!

Urban Decay released their Cream Shadows back in 2009 and I proceeded to want to throw them out a window. The formula proved difficult to work with but finally after a little TLC during application I proceeded to love them long time.

NYX Cream Shadows suffer a similar fate. You need a little time, patience, caring, and attention when applying these bad boys as they are challenging to blend out and get onto your lid just right. The formula has a slower dry time which is both good and bad as it gives you plenty of time to blend out and build colors up but that “wet” finish does make blending a tad on the difficult side sometimes.

The colors are rich in pigment and have incredibly vibrancy that is simply stunning to say the least. If anything at all you won’t have any complaints about the color pay off here. The jewel-like tones of the colors is simply stunning and each shade has a rather brilliant metallic finish and in some cases, some shades have a super sparkly finish.

Each shadow comes in a tube with a sponge tip application. The best method for application is prime, prime, prime…make sure you have a good, dry surface you’re working on. If your lid is dry already you’re golden but if you’re lid is oily be sure to prep well prior to application as you’ll experience a good deal of creasing if you don’t. Even with a solid eyeshadow primer on I still saw some creasing towards the end of the day. A reader had commented and said the colors flaked on her but I didn’t experience the issue myself. With eye primer I can get through an eight hour period with minor creasing issues around the end of that day and without the primer I see creasing around hour six or seven.

I found that with each color I had a different experience with application. Some shades blended great but others went on patchy (you’ll see this in a few of my photos below) and I couldn’t get an even layer of color in place. Do use the sponge applicator or a flat head brush of some sort to aid you in getting an even layer of color on your lid. Fingers are great as well but you need to commit yourself to the challenge of getting this into place just right. Chocolate was easy enough for me to apply. It went on smoothly, blended out easily, and allowed me to build the color up to a nice intensity. But Chestnut proved a challenge and applied patchy plus it felt cakey once I did get the desired amount on my lids. I find the most challenging aspect of the shadows is the build up process. Too much and things get cakey, too little and you end up with more of an eye gloss finish with subtle color pay off. The textures of the shadow is quite thick but it sheers out rather quickly while you blend so you do have to build up a few layers to get the best intensity. It is possible to get excellent color pay off but it is a challenge to do so. For my looks below I have at least three to four layers of product in place.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend these as a base product. Use them alone for the best results. I tried loose pigment and shadow on top but it definitely over does things and creasing will happen even faster using other mediums so just stick to using one shade of cream shadow minus any extras outside of eyeliner if you want.

Lighter shades, such as Pinky Beige, proved the most flattering if you prefer lighter more natural colors plus these prove the easiest to apply and blend out. Darker shades such as Chestnut, Oolong Tea, Deep Blue, etc…have the most vibrant color pay off but are also the most challenging to apply.

Overall, the NYX Cream Shadows are a steal at $5. The formula is suburb in terms of pigmentation but they are a challenge and you have to be willing to commit yourself to the task of application in order to really enjoy them. These need a little time and patience to apply for the best results and can’t be rushed. Not everyone is going to love them particularly folks who typical don’t enjoy using cream eyeshadows or those who have oily lids. I personally loved how intense they were but I’m actually looking forward to indulging in some of the lighter shades like Suede and Frost Beige. I don’t love the amount of time and effort that goes into application but I can’t deny that the results are pretty incredible when I do take the time out to apply these correctly.

Wow, Chestnut looks especially lovely on you! Those have some serious pigmentation.

    • the Muse

aw thanks. It was really hard to apply and you can see how patchy it went on in my photo 🙁 but it’s such an amazing color it was worth the effort!

    • Littlecreek

Have to second this comment, that color looks damn fine with your eyes.

  • Candee

Chocolate looks beautiful. I may have to pick that one up. Thanks for the review! MUAH

Chestnut and oblong tea look so pretty! I love the intensity of the pigmentation. I probably can’t indulge since my eyelids are oily and I even have a hard time with cream eyeshadows with a more “tacky” finish like the Tarte shadow sticks (I think I have to go powdery finish all the way), but these look gorgeous and so flattering on you! Hope other guys and gals out there can enjoy. 🙂 OH and I am repeating my plug for more FOTDs, please!! 😀

    • the Muse

aw thanks hapa! I’m really not sure how they would take on oily lids, nyx says they are water resistant but…they prove difficult to work with on my drier eyes so I imagine on oily lids it’ll be a challenge! aw thanks 🙂 I’m kinda iffy on FOTDs but def going to try and do a few more ;-D xoxoxo!

  • Sarah S.

Pinky Beige is so gorgeous on your eyes! Makes me think of strawberry choco <3

  • Hannah

Chocolate is really catching my eye, it reminds me of the brown liquid eyeshadow ELF does. But the NYX one looks like it’s a lot better – and actually applies evenly!

  • Tina

I’m def getting some of these when Ulta has them out. I was in there 2 days ago and they were prepping the displays for them but nothing out yet.

They only had the lip creams and they also had testers. I tried those on my hand and smelled them and gag, I didn’t like the smell of them so passed. Did you do a review on the new NYX lip creams?

    • the Muse

I didn’t try the lip creams hun. Sorry to hear they had a bad smell 🙁

  • molly

    • the Muse

ah good question danielle! and thanks your too kind 🙂 Pinky beige photo I’m wearing the ELF Studio Blush I featured today in Twinkle Pink, in the Oolong tea photo I’m wearing Tokidoki Blush in blush in skategirl, chestnut photo I’m wearing nars orgasm, in the chocolate photo, I’m not sure, it was an LE MAC shade but can’t recall the name at the mom! Sorry 🙂

  • Maggie

I go tthe purple one, and it STAINED so bad. My hand was still purple pink the next day…so I exchanged it for the Olive Branch color, that one doesn’t stain and the color is beautiful.

    • the Muse

yup typo! sorry sometimes the fingers type faster than the brain thinks 🙂

      • Littlecreek

Lol 🙂 I was reading it thinking, this is either an error or there is some type of tea out there I haven’t tried. Speaking of which, any good tea recommendations? I’m in a rut.

        • the Muse

Sorry. It’s been a long day lol. have you tried executus? Alex created the blend for adagio. their valentine blend is kicking my ass lately too. Strawberries, rose, chocolate, and black tea. amazeBALLZ! Yazmin Basa has some incredible floral concoctions on Etsy as well, very soothing, nice before bed blends.

  • kimkats

Hey Muse – do you think these are pigmented enough to use as eyeliners? Like use tha MAC 209 brush to pick up the shadow from the sponge tip and apply as liner? These are too shimmery for my ol’ eyes, but some of those would make awesome colored liners!! 😀

    • the Muse

mmmmmmmmmm I haven’t tried, the dry down is a little slow for lining with but if you’re willing to wait for it to dry it might work!? 🙂

  • Ashley

Chocolate looks great on you! These actually seem a lot better than I thought they’d be, originally (I suspected heavy creasing immediately and flaking). It’s good to know that it is possible to make them look really good, as you’ve shown us here. 🙂

    • the Muse

ashley I def had creasing action but thankfully no flaking although someone did mention they experienced it. I made sure to prep prior with UDPP and powdered my lid as well prior to application dunno if this helped the wear ;D!

  • cdev

That pinky beige looks great on you .
You’re eyelashes look fab!!! What mascara are you wearing ?
    It is stunning!

    • the Muse

aw thanks cdev you’re too kind. Believe it was beaute de kose fantist.

  • Cait

I’m definitely getting chocolate once I locate these. I would have never thought to get a color like chestnut but it looks so fabulous on you I might pick it up in the hopes that it looks half as good on me, lol

  • Joanna

I am going to get me a few…I see some colors that I am interested in trying. Thank you for the review and swatches.

  • cupcake

What is that lip gloss you’re wearing?Looks so pretty!Pink looks good!:)!

    • the Muse

hi cupcake aw thanks it’s actually several different glosses. can’t remember all the ones I used, one is a Clinique Almost Lipstick in Tender Honey I believe, can’t recall the others 🙂 Sorry!

  • Sandra JT

Oooohhhhh this is the first I’ve heard of these! Can’t wait to try them after seeing your swatches! They look great on you!

I totally agree with you regarding the UD cream shadows. Thankfully I got mine as freebies as an apology for a botched Amazon order. I still have them – freebies are freebies – but rarely touch them. My nails are far too long to be poking my fingers around my eyes to blend. I didn’t find it any easier using a variety of my brushes either, unfortunately. The tubes also seem like they have very little product in them, especially for the $$ UD products go for. Disappointing 🙁

Have you ever tried the Hard Candy cream shadows? I’ve got a couple & find them very easy to work with. The formula is nice, they have a doefoot applicator, they really go a long way & have a lot of product in each tube, they’re not at all gritty or patchy, they don’t crease on me, they can be blended down more sheerly or built up & have a really nice opalescent sheen to them. Pretty! I like them a lot more than the UD ones. They also work just fine under my pressed powder shadows, low to high end. I found loose shadows somewhat more difficult to apply over top, though. Now I’m curious whether the NYX & Hard Candy ones are similar to each other. These look more frosty to me, rather than having a opalescent sheen. But my god, they’re gorgeous! And from the comments others have made, it sounds like the shades they came up with are quite the variety!

Definitely going to order some of these ASAP! I’m glad you actually apply products you test as well. It’s nearly impossible to tell how a swatched product translates to actually being worn. Thanks so much for the info & photos! 🙂 I’m drooling just imagining these in nice deep shades of green! *ggaaaahhhh*

  • Zee

I can’t fight the eager to say that you are beautiful.. ^__^
also, chestnut works very well on your eyes!

  • Lorelei

This sound so interesting…where is this product made?
    Taiwan? China?

Just wanted to update my last comment. I recently got a couple of Avon cream shadows very similar to this. Yes, Avon, believe it or not. They are actually amazingly great & work really nicely under powder shadows of all types. No primer needed. Just use them as a base and get no creasing, smudging or fading. And the formula is incredibly easy to work with. The only unfortunate thing is they only have about 6 shades or so. The two I got look nearly exactly like the above swatches of Pinky Beige & Chocolate. If you wait for a sale you can pick them up for only $3.99. And Avon Mark eyeshadows are really really good! Use them on top of these cream shadows and you get an amazing look that lasts well over 12 hours. That’s the longest I’ve ever tested them. Really great products. I never wouldve expected that from Avon!

I got one of these and it totally just peels of my eyelids! Great color but terrible product!
