Butter London Lippy Review & Swatches

I match.

Yup, I do.

I match my eyeshadow to my shirts and blouses, my chucks to my t-shirts, etc…etc…I’m a matcher. Some folks think this should be outlawed but it’s all about personal style isn’t it?

I guess that’s why I’m completely in lust with the idea of the new Butter London Lippy Lipgloss Collection. I’m not a nail girl but this selection of five nail polishes are exact spot on matches for some of Butter London’s most popular nail polish shades. Pretty nifty matching up your tips and lips eh?

Take a look!

They got just about everything right with this formula. These are loud, vibrant shades of color that have incredible pigmentation. I’d avoid tossing around the word lipgloss in their presence as that’s just an insult, these are more of a lacquer-like product due to their excellent color pay off. The glosses have the texture of a nail lacquer in the fact they are rich and thick.

These have a sponge tip applicator for application but I was thinking a brush would have probably proved best for a formula such as this. The sponge does a good enough job but a few applications are necessary to get the color on just right as it applies a tad patchy at first until you stroke over it a few times. Take a little time and patience during application to get the smoothest finish. They run a little sticky but not nearly as tacky as a MAC Lipglass plus the formula is fairly lightweight for a lip product with this much pigment.

The wear time rocks it as you can easily get a five hour period or longer from these without a touch up as they have a knack for adhering very well to lips. Do be aware if your lips are on the drier side as you want a smooth working surface for application since these can accentuate dryness or flaking.

I think the formula is really rather awesome but they have one thing wrong with them that could break the deal. They taste awful. They have a super strong melon-y perfume scent that has a crisp, freshness to it. I’m not sensitive to fragrance or flavor in my gloss so I thought this was lovely. However, after application, I smacked my lips together, proceeded to get some of that taste in my mouth and ouch. It’s really a very, very strong perfume taste. I couldn’t stand it and had to wipe my mouth and rinse with water (the taste still remains after that, I was sitting here with a tissue wiping my tongue).

Sadly, the deal breaker is the taste for me. I’ve never met a flavored lip product I didn’t like but these are a tad too strong for me. I’m a chronic lip licker when I have gloss on but if you’re disciplined enough NOT to lick your lips, the formula is ace….!

Anyone try them?

… Why would someone make a lip gloss that tasted nasty? That’s like making contact lenses that make you blind lol

      • Becky

The taste goes away in a minute or two. Then I enjoy no taste or smell…I purchased Snog.

        • the Muse

you’re lucky becky I can’t get past the god awful taste. It just lingers and if you get it in your mouth it literally makes you gaggy :-/

  • Candy

    Awww 🙁
This makes me so upset! I was seriously lemming for these HARD. I constantly lick my lips and smack them together, so I don’t think I could handle this much perfume/taste in a lippy.
    Sad face

candy I have the same problem, I’m a chronic lip licker so it’s hard to not lick my lips when I have gloss on 🙁 but the taste proved too much for me 🙁

  • Nunu

Meh, I am matchy matchy too. In fact right now I am wearing a hot fuchsia lipstick that matches with my hot fuchsia bag and blue shoes that match my blue jacket xD
Ugh, I don’t understand why they’d make awful tasting lipglosses, I once bought a lipgloss that smelt like licorice T.T

I purchased trout pout on a whim and I never had a light pink gloss look this good on me. I’m addicted. I’m not a fan of the 17 dollar price tag (I was quite shocked at check out) and the taste is not that good. BUT I do love this color on me.

  • Deb

Muse, did you try Trout Pout? I’ve been wearing it for a few days and have not noticed a taste at all. I agree with everything else you said about these, really love the long wear time 🙂

    • the Muse

whoa deb how could you not notice the taste?!?! it’s VERY strong. wowwwwwwwwww! ;-D haha you have some weird taste buds. 😀 I tried all the shades, including trout pout 🙂 I have swatches in the post.

Unrelated to this review, but I definitely had a dream that you were getting closed down because some companies were angry that you give honest reviews even if they’ve sent you their products for free…haha I was sooo upset you were stopping, but then I woke up and was happy to realize it was just a dream!

    • the Muse

hey jo, gosh that would be a weird one ;-D haha….I think brands are cool with positive and negative reviews as at least with some negativity they can learn from mistakes, find out what we, the consumer, really want, and how they can improve overall.

  • peixuan

hiya muse! if you dont likey the taste much, could you send Trout Pout over? 🙂 they look awesome!!

  • christmas

I really liked the color of trout pout because it looked like I could wear it with either pink blush or coral blush and it looked like it was perfectly in the middle of those two… I went to two Ultas trying to find it but they both had one in stock, open… I finally picked it up at Nordstroms ($3 more pfft) but the color doesn’t look as good on me as I had hoped… it looks too creamy :< I like the texture though.
The smell I thought was supposed to replicate nail polish because they are a polish brand lmao

  • Tina

I just tried on the Yummy Mummy lippy and I am absolutely gobsmacked…by just how awful the smell is. Awful would not be adequate to describe it. It is literally giving me a headache. So I thought I would do the next best thing and search for reviews on this lippy and found your review. I love your reviews and am so glad to see that I am not the only one that is not loving it. Such a pity though, now I dare not try their other new colours which all look so amazing. They should spend more money on focus groups. How in the world did they get it so wrong?

    • the Muse

tina agreed the smell really kills the entire experience such a shame! I THINK they might have changed the fragrance on some of the newer glosses to mint thankfully!

  • Zovesta

    I need these! =) I don’t think I’ll mind the smell/taste too much… I hope!

I am matchy matchy, too. I think it look so much better than not matching!
