Maybelline Dream Nude Airfoam Air Infused Foundation Review & Swatches

I wanna tell you that Maybelline Dream Nude Airfoam Foundation changed my life. That it’s the most amazing foundation I’ve ever used, that it’s HG (holy grail)….

But that’s sadly not the case. The concept and idea are unique and interesting but it has quirks, lots of ’em.

Maybelline Dream Nude Airfoam is an air infused mousse foundation. Maybelline proclaims how light, airy, and soft this is and on many levels indeed it is all those things. The concept is unique and new to the foundation world here in the Western Market (Korea and Japan have plenty of these mousse style foundations and even BB Creams in this format). Revlon also has a similar product available at the moment. Surprisingly this trend hit the drugstores first as you can’t find mousse (perhaps spray ones) at your favorite high end counters.

This comes in a can with a pump applicator. Shake it well. You’ve been warned. First use you need to shake it up well less you pump out what looks like a hair mousse. It seems that the tinted pigments end up towards the bottom of the foundation can and separate from the “mousse” therefore producing a white puffy cloud of mousse should you fail to shake the can enough. I find the pump a bit unforgiving in terms of the amount of product it distributes so there is a little waste here. Sorry blurry picture below, technical issues.

As with most drugstore foundations the main issue for me is the shade selection. Either they run too light, too beige, or too orange. All four cans I tried just seemed too orange-y beige and just unwearable on a whole.

I love the feel of the product, the idea of it, and the application. You merely have to dab your fingers into the small puff of mousse and smooth it onto your face (don’t try to smear an entire gob of this on, go slowly and build it up). I think the worst part of the product is the oily feel of it. I didn’t expect that at all. It has a very dewy finish and it builds very nastily. In contrast to the light as air formula it looks very mask-like once in place and gives dewy, unfinished results. I find it oxidizes quickly enough if it sticks around long enough on your face that is since it tends to migrate onto clothes or your collar during the wear time. Yak! The waster based formula is hydrating but the more you apply the oilier it becomes.

I have to say I really wanted to like this but the product leans more on selling you an innovating idea of a mousse foundation but sadly it lacks any quality to back up that interesting concept. The poor color selection, oily feel, and very poor wear time are just some of the negative aspects that make it a total skip.

Sadly, this one is meant for the rubbish bin.

Love the idea but the quality isn’t there to support it.

Tried it?

Loved it?

Not so much?

That’s good to know. I might have been tempted to get this otherwise.

I absolutely hated this product! I was so looking forward to it because I swear by dream matte mousse as well as the cream to powder version. So, I assumed I would like this as well, I was especially intrigued by in the interesting foam concept. So wrong. I got the lightest shade and shook as instructed and right out of the can the color just looked dirty, so on my skin it was orange. I couldnt believe it, I though I bought a defective can! So like an idiot I purchased another, same thing. I let the foam sit on my kitchen sink to see what it looked like after a couple hours and it turned dark brown! Horrible, I cant see this product lasting long for Maybelline. Definitely not worthy of the Dream line!

I am VERY disappointed with this product. I agree with all comments.
The container gives out too much as careful as I try to be. It is hard to get an even coverage and yes the colour does go darker. I also do NOT like it, So! I join the “disappointed group” I would much rather have said how lovely it is.

I AM SO GLAD I WAITED FOR YOUR REVIEW!!! This stuff just looks and sounds nasty! Thanks for posting and saving me money!

  • Deb

Bought it, tried it, no love from me. The shade I selected was a good match but that’s about it. I shook it well and got the right amount of product ok. It was the formula; it had the opposite effect of dewy on me. It dried too quickly and I couldn’t get it to blend properly. Tried fingers, tried several different types of foundation brushes, tried a sponge….need I say any more? Fail. In true Muse fashion “do not want” 🙂

    • the Muse

hells yes deb ;-D do not WANT at all. great idea but works poorly :-/

  • Sarah

Nasty. I don’t wear drugstore foundation due to the orange-ness, but I distinctly remember in my teens the feel of the Maybelline mousse foundation on my skin, it was akin to smearing pigmented lard on my face. I see the word “mousse” or “foam” and run for the hills these days.

  • Jeri

elizabeth arden first came out with mousse foundation about 20 yrs ago.

  • aquahartz

    glad u reviewed this, muse.
in asia recently, maybelline released Pure BB Mineral BB Mousse in foam form. do u think this is similar to this dream nude airfoam foundation or is it another asia vs europe/us market product?

i purchased the Pure BB Mineral BB Mousse a few months ago in M’sia.
it gives me initially a nice glow but slightly pale on my medium fair skin, then oxidizes after 2,3 hours of wear in a good dry condition in Melbourne (not humid, hot–it will oxidize even quicker).
i dont really like it though.

    • the Muse

same concept aqua but the formula is a bit different. I have the bb mineral mousse, reviewed it before, but found it too pale as well.

  • Lucy

I detest this stuff. I tried it in my closest drugstore and it expanded and went everywhere after using a drop. It was greasy and overall just didnt seem like foundation.

  • Cori

I actually thought this would be good for me. Since you said it was hydrating, and I have very dry skin; as most foundations dry up my skin. But my skin doesn’t hold oily very well. 🙁 I guess I have to keep looking!

  • SJG

Elizabeth Arden had a mousse foundation 20some years ago. I am assuming there were issues similar to the ones you experienced with it, or EA being EA, they would still have it.

  • Izzybell

At first I bought this on the internet and i got it in ivory, which was too dark, then wore it without realising. Very traumatic! But then i got it in cameo and it was perfect. Light coverage but built up it is fine. I find it perfect for winter and at 6.99 on sale I was pleased. I have to put cream on everyday so this foundation blends better for me than powder. Will deffo buy this again.

  • Quinctia

This actually works for me. I use dream matte mousse regularly, which is a little finicky, so I was able to easily come up with a routine for this product.

    a) PRIMER FIRST – Preferably something thinner than a gloopy pore-filling one.
    b) Apply with small amounts on a brush and blend, blend, blend. I use a deceptively small brush for this, too. I prefer the “blush brush” which came with a travel set I’ve got, it’s small enough so I can blend well around my nose and some smaller spots.
    c) Buy a lighter color than you think you need.

Assuming you’re patient enough to blend it out well, and a good primer will help with that, it’s a cheap enough medium to slightly heavier foundation. I don’t think there are quite enough colors in the range, though.

  • ruthless

I got the Revlon in “rich ginger’ which makes me laugh, but it’s too dark for me. The next shade lighter is WAY too light, there is no in between. I liked the revlon so I thought this would be good and have my shade, but so far I haven’t been able to find testers and I REFUSE to buy foundation unswatched.

  • Valery

The worst make up ever! not only doesn’t cover anything is very hard on my skin, I felt like jalapeno chili on my face, burn, etc. Horrible! don’t waste your money!

  • Andrea

I got this foundation yesterday. I love a lot of things about it. First off, I don’t even feel like I am wearing it! It like blends in with my skin and doesn’t weigh me down. I feel like it does a good job covering but it’s hard to blend. I honestly give it a really good review! I really like it.

    • Cathy Dillon

I do too. Love it and I hate they stop making it. People would tell me how smooth my skin was .

  • Jennifer

I wish I had read these reviews before I purchased this product today at Target. I was so excited to use it, I opened it up as soon as I got home. I HATE IT!!!! This product is complete crap and a waste of nearly $8.

    • the Muse

i’m so sorry jennifer 🙁 and target is crummy with beauty returns

  • Jessica

I bought this about a month ago and I am already out, normally foundation lasts me at least 3 months. This product did have a light airy feel but the color was just too orange as previously mentioned. If I got it the slightest bit wet it left me with a noticeable streak😲. It was way too easily rubbed off/ smeared, even with a loose powder on top. The coverage was good though…. Unfortunately it covers everything when you apply it( mirror, countertop, your clothes) . I would not recommend.

  • kat

Omg I bought it because first time I used it really loved it then I went out
Side not even an hour and I was sweating a lot every time I apply this makeup I sweat so much
    It sucks not worth buying

  • yadira

can’t believe it, it sounded like it was made in heaven with all the commercials and adds. I sell AVON and we have a mousse like foundation as well, I think I’ll stick to the AVON mousse foundation instead. Maybelline’s sounds like crap

I purchased this product over the weekend. I am an African American female with toffee/light cocoa colored skin, so I opted for the light cocoa pigment. I also struggle with extremely oily skin, but reading the reviews my experience was completely opposite of a majority of the reviewers.

First I would like to say I do agree that it is an initial shock looking at the consistency of the product once its dispensed from the bottle but although some have complained about the oily consistency within the product I found that the water base of the product countered that very nicely.

It is key to use small amounts at a time, because over applying may result in issues some people seemed to have had. This is a nice buildable product so after the first application of blending the product well, a second application applied evenly, will help with the amount of coverage you are trying to achieve.

For those who wear makeup regularly and have mastered the tricks of the trade you probably already know this but it is important to do the following:

    1. Start application with a fresh clean face
    2. If you have oily skin use any non-oil based moisturizer
    3. Follow moisturizing with some type of primer, for me I use a oil reducing primer.
    4. Apply foundation evenly and blend well
    5. REMEMBER LADIES as with any foundation, drug store or department store counters; it is important to set your foundation with a powder, the powder gives your face a finished matte look and keeps the foundation in place. I paired the foundation with a light dusting of MAC super blendable pressed powder and it set the foundation so nicely!

Its crazy how this product had so many negative reviews however, I have it on right now, and it looks and feels amazing, not heavy or goopy at all.

I would suggest that those who had a bad experience try it again, possibly using the steps I provided, or using another approach to application, and I almost can promise you, you will have an entirely different outlook on this product!

    Good luck Beauty Queens!

Was terrible burnt my skin and gave me a terrible rash was not worth the money at all.

  • Grecia

I was looking for foundation in powder, because I really hate the cakey heavy coverage normal foundations have. Since powder foundations are light in coverage, I wanted something similar. I bought this at target in nude and I was pleasantly surprised when I tried it on. It matches my skin quite nicely, and best of all it’s so lightweight. It was really easy to apply, and I just use my fingers then i go over my face with a sponge to even it out. I am in love with this foundation, because it works for me. I feel so naturally beautiful with this.

  • Ryan

I actually liked this foundation, I found it worked a lot better when I applied it with a brush rather than my finger or a sponge

  • Jasmine Jade

    I really like this –
It covers well, I think, for moderate to light acne. And Yeah, the tint is a little orange on some colors, but I use 200 Creamy Natural, and it’s not orange at all. It is really light, and I can’t even feel it on my skin! I don’t break out near as much compaired to liquid foundation. Not near as much at all. Pores are no problem, all I do is take a triangle sponge, take the short side end, and dab on the makeup. DON’T put on a whole lot at once! Take your time and build up. You won’t need a ton until you know how this product works on you. DON’T get near water. This is the worst downfall of the foam – it wil wash away in an instant. Even if your eyes get watery, a streak with be left on your face because it just washes away on contact with liquid. This DOES however make it really easy to wash off. The makeup doesn’t come off too easy otherwise. DON’T swipe on – remember – DAB.

I bought this a few days ago and am surprised by all the bad reviews. The issues other ppl are having with it are nonexistang for me. I have a red blotchy acne ridden face. Always have and usually have an awful time covering it. I was out pf my usual foundation that I use after 2 other products go on my face to cover the red and acne, but couldn’t find it at two local stores in my color, I decided to buy the airfoam because of the price. I have now applied it two mornings. I shake it up and apply it just like the directions say. Was a perfect match, lightweight, covers the redness, not oily or sticky, and wears well all day. I love the way it feels on and the way it looks. I am tempted to go and buy a couple more cans so I can wear it for a long time because with all the negative reviews I am terrifies I wont be able to find it anymore.anymore.

  • Laney Gayler

I hated it. I put it on. It made me look like a cake. I got porcelain ivory like I do in dream smooth mousse which is what I normally get but they’ve been out of. So I tried this product and as soon as I put I on my face started burning. But I have weird skin so I ignored it. I stopped using the product though. And two days later I continue to have a horrible rash from this. I mean it’s red and bumpy. I would rather walk around with no makeup with my ugly ass face than wear this product. My face is burning and itching and it looks gross. I don’t recommend it for anyone.

  • Lauren

Recently purchased this foundation and I would not recommend!! First of all its a waste as it comes out in silly amounts and falls everywhere.

Secondly it made my skin burn all over and my eyes sting and water very severley! My eyes are currently blood shock and will not stop wtinging and watering and I applied it at 10:00am and washed it off an hour later, it’s now 14:15 and my eyes are not Gettin any better, nor is the burning of my face!
    Awful!!!

  • Shanice

To make this foundation work, you have to apply little amounts one step at a time with a blending brush. I actually mix two tones together to stop the orangy-ness it love to give off. COCOA & LIGHT COCOA. Light Cocoa is usually applied where I high light.. Cocoa is used to help blend it all together. Being a makeup beginner and an artist, I just worked with it and my makeup routine give me a beautiful glow followed up with MAC Pro Long Concealer. Now that I’m getting better, I’ma switch my foundation eventually. But I love it. I barely have acne, and it covers up my dark spots under my eyes so I won’t have to fluid my face with concealer afterwards. lol

  • Brenda

I’ve been using this foundation in rotation with others, and I do like it and will repurchase, I have 360-Light Cocoa. I do agree with others to apply a little at a time with a brush and follow with powder.

  • Alicja Skorupski

Contrary to most of you I actually really love this product!

I have olive skin with yellow undertones and it is seriously difficult to find shades that don’t have rosy pink tones that tend to wash me out a lot.

The application was difficult at first but once i started using a stippling brush to blend it came up a dream (basically impossible with other tools).

It has a medium coverage that hide all my redness and even darkness under my eyes(thanks to those yellow tones)! The finish is dewy and fresh (actually delivers on the no make up look). Stays all day even through long sweaty bar shifts and feels like you’re wearing nothing at all. Didnt make me oily or irritate my skin at all.

Would a hundred percent recommend to anyone with really warm skin tones like me 🙂
