NYX Shine Killer Review & Swatches

Ok, Urban Decay De-Slick in a Tube, absolutely essential for oily skin. Such a life saver for Summer wearin’ and tearin’ as well.

I was thinking the new NYX Shine Killer might prove a dupe but…mmm formula is different but still for mattifying none the less.

Take a look!

I’m actually sorta kinda not finding much of a huge difference between the new NYX Pore Filler and Shine Killer. If you already own Pore Filler you might not need to indulge in Shine Killer or if you’re trying to figure out if you need both or which one you’d want more over the other, well there isn’t a ton of differences between the products so one or the other is a perfectly great purchase but not sure you’ll need both.

Shine Killer is a soft clear gel which has a soft, velvety finish and a silicone base. If you like silicone primers, well it is debatable if you need it. It does have that velvety, powdery feel and dries down to a matte finish however on the plus sound it isn’t itchy nor does it pill. It’s really debatable if this is for you or not, I personally prefer hydrating primers due to my drier skin but I find I migrate towards silicone primers occasionally when I want a super smooth canvas to apply makeup as hydrating ones don’t exactly excel at creating such a surface.

The differences between Pore Filler and Shine Killer are pretty slim pickings. Pore Filler runs a bit thicker where as Shine Killer seems to be a tiny bit thinner but you’d really have to be paying attention to notice this. Pore Filler is a fleshy peach shade where as Shine Killer is a clear gel. Both work great at blurring imperfections and mattifying skin.

Overall, Shine Killer is a solid pick for those with oily skin that need a good base that lays the ground work for foundation. This will easily keep shine at bay and allow your foundation to wear an extra hour or two longer. The cheaper price tag also makes it highly appealing as silicone primers on the mid and higher end aren’t exactly cheap.

Ewww. I’m cone free all the way when it comes to my mattifiers! If you like Urban Decay Deslick, check out Smashbox Anti-Shine — they’re pretty much the exact same product but Anti-Shine is cheaper and bigger! 😀

Thank you for the in-depth comparison of the two Nyx products, Muse. As my skin isn’t quite oily, I’ll opt for the Pore Filler tube. I’m glad some brands are putting out cheaper tags. Pore fillers get pricy.

they really do don’t they? I’ve seen some for $44-$50…eep! the smashbox one I’m loving at the moment is $45! ouchie! Do let me know if you try it, would love to hear your thoughts Fey!

Thanks for the review! My skin’s super oily and I definitely need to start thinking about what I’m going to do this summer once it starts getting really humid. Which unfortunately will probably start in about a month or so 🙁

hey elizabeth aw! I hear ya. I get a bit oily myself in the summer :-/

  • GR

Ooo tempting! I work outdoors so I gave up trying to keep myself looking matte, but I still want a bit of coverage to even things out. Considering mixing revlon colorstay with my moisturizer because I ran out of the discontinued colorstay “active” that I mixed with for the past year! 🙁

hey thanks for the review, its the only one I found!!! I am trying to decide if I should buy the UD D-slick or save money with NYX, my skin is VERY oily, would say Shine Killer works as well as the UD? Even if the formula is different

Hey Muse, I’m going to do sugar skull makeup (I’m great at drawing them so new challenge! makeup!) and I need to keep my white base and black nose in place. My nose doesn’t get super oily during the day (combo skin and all) but I don’t want to reapply the face paint frequently. Would you recommend this? I don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for De-Slick or any other primers! Thanks!

    • the Muse

try revlon photoready primer Danielle, it’s excellent for holding foundation in place!
