Sephora + Pantone Universe Color of the Year Lipgloss Set Review & Swatches

I got brave and walked out of the house today and last night with tangerine lipgloss from the Sephora + Pantone Universe Color of the Year Lipgloss Set.

You ever have those days where you tried something completely wrong for you but proceed to pose in front of the mirror and tell yourself how bloody brilliant it looks on you.

I had that moment this morning with tangerine lipgloss but I walked into my office and my sister quickly me brought back to down to earth when she said it looked like the Joker met the Wet and Wild Lipstick display.

Damn her! She’s right.

I seriously can’t do oranges.

But I tried, I failed, but it was fun none the less and it doesn’t take away from the fact I’m so slapping a Muse Approval on the new Sephora + Pantone Universe Color of the Year Lipgloss Set.

Jump!

Darker skin girls you can rock this like a hurricane. These color pop like nobody’s business and if you like and worked orange in the past you’re in for a real treat.

First off, Sephora has done an incredible job with the Pantone Universe Collection. It’s fairly inexpensive but it packs heat and quality. The presentation, packaging, quality, and overall price are just some of the things to rave about here.

The lipgloss collection comes in a weighty slide out box. The packaging alone really speaks for the overall quality. They went all out here and the box the glosses come in won’t easily be tossed aside. It’s something you’ll want to keep the glosses in. Gorgeous really.

Inside you’ll find four shades of graduating shades of tangerine/orange gloss. Again, nice presentation here. Each gloss comes in slick tubes with a white cap. The simplicity of the white packaging off sets the loud, bold shade inside each tube. Each gloss sports a flat sponge applicator which saturates beautifully with color and builds it up perfectly.

My hand automatically navigated to the shade with the most shimmer at first which was Tangerine Tango Glaze. This happens to be the sheerest of the lot with virtually no color pay off. It was disappointing at first but I was feeling good about this as I knew it would look great with a little lip stain underneath.

However, be aware, do not judge the entire set by this single shade as things get increasingly brilliant when you venture into trying the three remaining shades.

Tangerine Tango Vivid (tangerine), Tangerine Tango Luminous (tangerine with shimmer), and Tangerine Tango Opal (tangerine pink with gold shimmer) are a huge surprise. These are extremely pigmented AND act out their awesomeness with a hybrid formula that’s part gloss and part lip lacquer/lip cream. What you see in the tubes is exactly what you’ll get on your lips. The colors are richly saturated with pigment and come across incredibly on lips (if you can sport such bold shades of orange/tangerine on your lips that is).

The formula is thick with a nice smooth glide but be sure to apply a little balm underneath for the best application as sometimes things get patchy on drier lips. The color has a lovely shine factor as well with a moisturizing feel that isn’t tacky or sticky. They wear nicely for about three hours in but you might find color migrates a little bit around hour four, I found the color started creeping into my upper lip line so I needed to pay special attention to a touch up less it end up everywhere else on my face.

The colors do all look very similiar in the box and during a swatch but they have subtle little differences that are noticeable when applied. I find each shade has a different degree of depth.

Overall, I might not be a winner when it comes to wearing orange, but I can’t deny, this set really proves incredible and earns a spot on the Muse Approval list. The formula and quality of each gloss, the presentation and packaging, and the fairly inexpensive price tag gets a huge yay from me. Sephora done well. This is unique, exciting, and possibly one of the best makeup purchases I’ve made in a while. Sephora + Pantone Universe proves a collection you won’t want to miss this season. Right on trend and oh such a fun little purchase.

    • the Muse

  • JenJ

goooorrgis!!! i want the other set that you recently posted and maybe the nail polishes.

  • JoElla

I am loving these colors! But can only wear them well with a tan, a real tan not those fake tans.

Hopefully some will be left after my week at the beach! (yes I do pile on the SPF, I just tan no matter what I slap on my face)

Hopefully some drugstore dupes will pop up, that way I can play and not be out lots of simoleons!

  • Asuka

Muse, that looks very pretty on you! Why not orange? You paired it with nice makeup overall.

  • kiwikiwidragon

I agree that it looks good on you. I think you should rock it! No matter what!

  • Lulubelle

I’m very drawn to orange, so I love these. I thought you loved wearing coral, are these just too vibrant or does coral have more pink in it?

    • the Muse

these aren’t coral lulu, they are tangerine orange shades hun! I love wearing coral but can’t do orange ;-D

  • Laci

I got the set at my Sephora this weekend, but I had to take it back. The only one that looked good on me was the lightest one. I was so sad because I’m obsessed with oranges this year.

    • the Muse

laci I can’t wear them either girl, don’t feel bad, they are BOLD ;-D

  • Christina

The color looks great on you, you should wear orange with pride! I’m thinking of springing for the collector’s edition set, so I can’t wait to see swatches from that. I have an olive complexion, so I’m hoping the colors won’t be too bright for me.

    • the Muse

christina I think you’ll look fab in ’em! and thank you, you’re too kind chica ;D!

  • Nikki

I think it looks so pretty on you!! I think you can totally rock orange!

  • Ruth

wow! that’s pretty harsh, even from a sister.

on a different note, the tracking from Journey’s hit my mailbox and Wonder Woman chucks will be out for delivery tomorrow!

    • the Muse

      OMG mine too ruth!

Aw na ;-D my sis is cool! I appreciate the honesty completely! ;-D

      • Ruth

I have a brother who teased me unmercilessly as a kid, so my thinking that a sister had to be nicer than an older brother. he used to call me bubble butt, tell me that mom loved him more, i was adopted and the monsters were going to get me in my sleep. so in my mind, if i had a sister instead, she would be super nice and everthing would be awesome! good to know that even though we love each other to pieces, all siblings are the same: honest and will say crazy stuff to each other. It doesn’t end; my brother is living with us and we still torment each other.

        • the Muse

oh gosh nothing like that with my sis ;-D we have a great relationship and are the best of friends ;-D the best thing about my sister is I feel like a comedian with her, she laughs at ALL my stupidity and it feels so great lol ;-D My sis always told me my mom loved her more, that the milk man was my father, etc..etc..LOL it was all in jest though, never intentionally hurtful. I think your brother was prob acting the way all brothers act lol! My sis is older than I am by 12 years but we still get on famously 😀

          • Ruth

of course he was teasing! he’s 6yrs older and still torments me; it’s ongoing but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

did you see the new trailor for s7 of Doctor Who? I swear in one of the flashes they have the first Doctor. I must’ve watched it 5 times trying to figure it ou.

          • the Muse

lol aww ruth too cute! I have indeed and still trying to wrap my head around it ;D!

  • Michelle

I for one would NOT rock orange and I would look awful in these products. It’s a shame because I agree with Muse that the color payoff is amazing and I love that in a gloss. I was so disappointed when Sephora chose their signature color to be orange this year–any other color theme and I would be breaking down their door! 🙁

    • the Muse

the glosses are def tangerine orange michelle but the blushes/shadow lean towards more peach ;-D so if you can do peach, they def bring that shade to the table.

  • Tammie

I wish Pantone started out with pink this year, can’t be helped though I suppose…but I can’t wear orange at all. Saves me money at least 😉

  • Courtney

I’m known by most of my friends as being brutally honest and I really think that lipgloss looks fine on you. I might stay away from the vivid but as for the others, rock them out! You pull it off.

      • Courtney

Exactly! I had a friend who dyed her hair red but it turned out more purple than red. Everyone lied and told her it looked good and I told her flat out it was purple. My rule is, if it is something that can be fixed in a few hours or less, tell them!

        • the Muse

i want you as my friend court ;-D that’s exactly how friendship should work!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Stelladiva

I think it looks great. Sometimes you have to try something outside your comfort zone.

  • Bethy

I am going to buy the $68 set as I have no orange blushes. And an orange lippie makes me giddy with excitement. And you look good in that gloss, Ms Muse! Believe me, I’m way too lazy to post a lie, I really do think it looks good. 🙂

    • the Muse

awwwwwww thanks bethy <3!!!!!!!!!!!! do get the set, well worth it imho!

  • isabella

I was at Sephora first thing to get the gloss set they are beautiful. the picture above of you looks nice. Nail polish set and the lipstick. Cant wait to wear them.

  • aquahartz

wow, orange pop! this one looks really gorgeous on u, muse! i think u can actually do oranges =)

  • Quinctia

I like the concept of the set, but I don’t like this color of the year. Never have been an orange fan. I hope orange lovers buy this enough so there’s one of these when, I don’t know, purple rolls around. I just got a purple lipstick today and it looked pretty good on me.

  • Mally

I was at Sephora today and I can’t tell you how many time I walked by the Patone stuff and came right back. I wanted to get the set thing for $68 but I wanted the individual packaging too! I’ll probably end up going tomorrow to buy it during the 15% off sale.

  • yelena

muse, i wanted to get the blush but opted for tarte amazonian clay 12 hour blush in tipsy instead becuz i was afraid the wear time wouldn’t be as good. can u comment on the wear time of the pantone blush?

    • the Muse

I haven’t tried the set yet yelena so can’t really comment. I have a review in the works shortly! 🙂

  • Stephanie C.

So so so pretty on you! I’m thinking of going out to get the set tonight. The price point is great and the color is so pretty 🙂 I love how they have a sheer version in the glaze as well!

  • MissTat
