Too Faced Summer Eye Palette Review & Swatches

Oh excitement, the Too Faced Summer Collection 2012 is appearing at www.toofaced.com today! I was reading on Twitter that the sale was for Glam members only, I’m not a Glam member but I was able to tuck a palette into my cart without any issues, so long as you log it, it seems to allow the purchase!

Kewl!

Did anyone grab anything up yet?

For me, upon first seeing the collection, the new Summer Eye Palette pretty much had me at hello, how are ya! I own pretty much all of the Too Faced Eyeshadow Boxes and was eager to add this to my stash as well. Visually, it’s pretty darn stunning. There’s a bit of a sparkle in there, some playful colors, and the palette just gives off a Summer-y vibe. It also happens to house some fairly bright shades compared to the other palettes with pops of pink, aqua, and coral.

Let’s take a look!

Too Faced Shadow Collection Palette have always been a fond favorite of mine not only because they are a great value but also because they are simple to apply.

They newer shadow palettes are a little smaller than the originals as the originals had a drawer that hid away a sponge applicator. Each of the palettes also feature a little pocket located in the top half that houses three small how to cards that offer three simple steps to “get the look”. Instructions are super easy to follow as it’s merely a matter of highlighting eyes and contrasting with the lighter and darker shades on lid and within crease. One of the most appealing aspects of the Too Faced Eyeshadow Palette is the fact they offer an easy way to get the look as not everyone is a super star when it comes to eyeshadow application.

The Summer Palette is a complicated one so this review might prove a little long. Visually, it’s really beautiful. The colors really call to me. Some of the shades like Peach Fuzz and Sunbeam have a lovely little twinkle and just seems terribly unique and special. It’s the application and the formula that gets a little tricky though for me. I had a difficult time getting the eye looks down correctly as some of the pair ups here, like chocolate and a bright pink, end up going muddy as you blend. I had a hard time defining the colors as well and they ended up looking a little washed out at the end of my look so what started out vibrant got a little messy as I blended out.

Formula, texture, and finish are all different in the shades but one thing I will say is this particularly palette isn’t as lovely as some of the others I already own. Typically Too Faced has a great color pay off and a lovely soft, velvety formula. I found the Summer Eye Palette was a mix of different formulas.

Two of my favorite shades, Peach Fuzz and Sunbeam, are semi-matte formulas with a sheer finish and a good dose of glitter. These had a bit of fall out joy to deal with. Sugar Sand proved the most true to Too Faced’s original formula with a soft, velvety finish that feels part cream, part powder. Cocoa Beach, Chocolate Sun, and Coral Crush are also all semi-matte formulas with a hint of sparkle. Plumeria and Mermaid have a soft, velvet formula but Plumeria applies a little chalky. And finally Toasted Coconut is a matte.

(Swatched Left to Right: Toasted Coconut, Mermaid, Sunbeam)

(Swatched Left to Right: Chocolate Sun, Coral Crush, Peach Fuzz)

(Swatched Left to Right: Cocoa Beach, Plumeria, Sugar Sand)

Overall, I think visually the colors seem to look amazing together but they are challenging to apply and contrast with. The shades went a little muddy for me when I was blending out sadly.

The Too Faced Summer Eye Shadow Collection is a nice selection of colors. I think I’ll make the most use out of the colors here by applying them individually versus combining them. I’m a little disappointed as the formula didn’t quite feel like what I’m used to from Too Faced. I’m a little bit at a loss what went wrong for me here but I guess it’s a combination of the odd color pair ups and the formula on some of these shades that led me astray.

I do suggest checking it out for yourself as you might have better success with it than I did. I’m actually feeling a little confused about it, I normally just love or leave it but this one has me puzzling!

Did you haul it?

I’d love to hear your thoughts if and when you do snatch it up!

    • the Muse

not yet but love that one ;-D great selection of nude/natural browns! I purchased it a few months ago when it released (December I think) and proceeded to put it on the side, def need to get a review up.

  • yelena

the blue is very pretty on u muse. and is it just me or are TF shadows just not easy to blend? i’ve tried different brushes and nothing. :S different primers too. i probably won’t be buying any more TF E/S. i do love their lip gloss and bronzers however. 🙂

    • the Muse

hi yelena, I never really had issues with TF shadows, they always have a lovely application but this one I had a few hiccups with unfortunately 🙁

  • Tish

Coral crush will make a lovely blush!

It’s a lovely palette that I won’t make use of unfortunately… Or fortunately for my wallet :p

  • Laura

I can see hitting the pan on the sunbeam first – it looks like a go to highlighter for me for any eye.

  • Phyrra

That’s so disappointing that the formula isn’t up to snuff for this palette. The colors are definitely visually appealing.

    • the Muse

my pleasure chels. don’t write it off completely ;-D you might wanna swatchie!

  • Melissa

i’m feeling confuzzled after reading your review. part of me says i must have it for my collection and part of me says swatch first. I will wait til it shows up at ulta or sephora and let ya know what i think later. Thanks for the honest review.

    • the Muse

Hey Missy! I think a swatch is safe. I’m a little confused myself lol! I both like and dislike it ;-D

  • Noelle

I always look forward to your reviews Muse!

I had this in my “cart” yesterday, but decided to wait. =o)

Do you know if this will be at Sephora as well? I want to see and play with it in person.

    • the Muse

it will indeed hun! end of march beginning of April I’m hearing! I think it has to be swatched first prior to a blindfolded purchase online ;-D!

  • Monica

Hey Muse! I would love to know your thoughts on the Naked at night palette, I got it a couple of weeks ago and so far it isnt love…Im kindda dissapointed…..those glittery eyeshadows look gorgeous on the pan but the fallout is sooo uncomfortable! and the colour goes somewhat sheer….

  • Jamie

I think I might get this and just use one or two of the colors at a time together…they’re so pretty! That Coral is awesome.

  • Pam

Thanks so much for the review. I usually LOVE Too Faced shadows & palettes (their Naked Palette is def a HG, as I lean toward cool to neutral shades), but I’m not into the glitter and fallout.

  • Ally

My only hesitation with these Too Faced palettes is that the main shadow in the “fashion” row always (with the exception of their one matte option) has SO much glitter!! I have the Natural Eye palette, and I haven’t even touched that glittery mess, except to swatch it (it was a gift) and see that it was a hot mess waiting to happen! The colours in this palette are SO pretty, that I might just have to give it a go.

  • Majick

Ok, I think these colors look amazing. If thats you having a problem with them, sign me up. 😉

  • Michelle

I’ve been applying these over Shadow Insurance and haven’t had any troubles with the formula. I would say a couple of the color match-ups (particularly Plumeria + Cocoa Beach) need a much lighter hand when blending than is usually required with the Too Faced palettes.

I wish I could buy a massive pot of Coral Crush. It’s so beautiful and is the perfect coral for my skin tone.

I just had a Too Faced make-over at Ulta on Saturday (4/14). Let me tell you, I was lucky to get the last two palettes they had left and I was the first person there for the event. I gave one to a friend of mine for her birthday (and was lucky enough to score them for 20% off).

It’s funny, I usually shy away from glitter but didn’t even think twice about it in this palette, I’m not even sure why. the MA did such an amazing job with my eyes that I’m glad there were two palettes left. I was only going to get it as a b-day present but when I saw how nice my eyes looked I was sold.

I have to agree the coral is one of the nicest colors. It looks like it’s going to be orange in the pan but swatched it’s a beautiful pinky coral. THe MA used the huge middle color and packed it in a T shape on my eyelid. Then she took the huge pink and put that on the inner corner of the lid. Next up was the coral in the crease, followed by the top cocoa one and the middle dark brown on the crease blending with the coral but leaving part of it to show.
Follow this with Black Orchid eye liner tightlined on top and bottom and some of the top row cocoa lining the bottom lashes under the liner pencil. And a ton of mascara – VIOLA – Sexy eyes PLUS!!!

  • Chelyan

The second look is soo beautiful! I’ve been lusting after this palette but I hardly go for colorful eye makeup so I’m still unsure! P.S. I just discovered your site and I love it!! xx

    • the Muse

aw thanks chelyan! you’re sweet to say so! awww so glad you’re loving Musings ;-D Sure you can! why not? ;-D color is fun sometimes 😀
