Musings of the Day: Hair Chalkin’ is a Trendin’ for Summer, Will You Be Checking It Out?

I’ve used Bloody Mary eyeshadow as hair chalk in the past because it’s fun for weekends but I can’t come into my office and see clients with a hot pink or orange streaks in my hair.

Sometimes I have to remember I’m a grown up.

Also, hair dye can damage hair terribly…so hair chalkin’ is such a great way to embrace the trend without killing your hair.

Good news if you like embracing funky fun trends with your hair, hair chalk is trending for your Summer looks!

Chalk (purchased at craft stores) is extremely easy to use as you simply wet it and swipe it across a strip or several strips of hair. It’ll dye your hair an outrageous shade temporarily without damaging anything and washes out in a snap.

Last year, feathers and beads were something that popped up at Sephora as the Summer approached so I have a feeling you’ll see some sort of kit or brand introducing hair chalk to you soon.

It’s a fun, easy, inexpensive way to embrace color temporarily and return to the land of grown ups on Monday morning without committing too much.

Me, being a commit-phobe, it proves the perfect way to get my color fix without having to live with it forever.

Would you try it?

I likey! I like the cut too! I can’t commit to pink sadly…one it wouldn’t go over big when I’m at my office lol and two I like variety so I know I’d be tired of it in a day…chalking is an easy way to get a few streaks in and wash it out for Monday ;-D

I envy you for having it that long!

It was only the roots 😛 I don’t think I could/would ever have like fully pink hair rofl. It actually looked pretty natural when I got it (well no natural lol but no over the top ya know), but then when my regular roots started coming in it just looked weird.

oh no I know…! was blond with a bit of graduating pink, which I think looks incredible but totes know what you mean about it growing out 🙁

  • Jessica Allison

My four-year-old has been begging for some pink and purple in her hair, this seems like a good option provided it doesn’t rub off on everything!

    • the Muse

it won’t jessica, you can use heat to keep it long wearing without transferring on clothes and such!

      • jen

when you say heat…how do you mean? blow dry it out? flat/curling iron it? and does this work on Black hair?

        • the Muse

flat iron works great or a curling iron if you want…black hair is fine, just saturate your hair well with the color to get the best vibrancy.

I’ve seen hair chalking demonstrated on youtube and my hair salon sells it (it’s called hair bug or something like that). I didn’t realize you could just use colored chalk! That’s so much cheaper than the salon kits. Does it work well on dark brown hair?

I once tried the Kool-Aid dye as a tween and it did not show up at all on my hair but looked fantastic on my cousin’s blond hair.

    • the Muse

hey kim lots of people use chalk, youtube has tons of tuts using it ;-D I’ve never used it, I have a bunch of bloody mary eyeshadows (depotted) that I use to chalk my hair with. They are SUPER pigmented so they work a nifty treat on my darker brown hair. I did kool aid as a freshman in high school ;-D my hair was lighter back than so I def got a nice effect from it ;-D

Kandee Johnson on youtube has a tutorial for hair chalking *they even showed it on good morning america* it’s simple, quick, and cute! *She says to use hairspray to set the color and keep it from getting all over you and making a mess.*

  • Iren

Just a tiny fact: hair chalking is in fact more damaging that most hair dyes, so be careful with it.

    • the Muse

Mmmm really? With all the chemicals in hair dye would think it would be less damaging! Learn something new everyday ;D

      • Michelle

To me it looks like a great way to dry out your hair, although it doesn’t from what I’ve heard. Also the application looks really messy! I can only imagine what my bathroom would like if I tried to do this (shudders)

        • the Muse

my hair is pretty dry already but I didn’t notice it getting any drier after using…but I didn’t use actual colored chalk to do it…It’s actually not as messy as you’d think. gloves are a necessary evil!

I have already put real pink streaks in my hair with a bit of bleach and manic panic for the past few months, now I’m sick of it. I’m gonna dye my hair my natural brown color and go back to regular highlights. It was fun while it lasted.

    • the Muse

i’m that way Angela, I get tired of stuff really fast so I never commit to something like manic panic plus I really need to wash it out after the weekend ;-D

  • Courtney

Has anyone with light blonde hair tried it? I have really light hair and I’m afraid the dye won’t wash out but I really want to try it. It looks like fun!

  • Jessica

I already dye my hair fun colors, although I only color the underside of my bangs because I am way too lazy to bleach all my Asian hair 😛 I don’t know that I would try chalk on my hair though, like I said, I’m lazy and it seems like a lot of effort for something that doesn’t last long hahaha

  • Sarah

I’m almost 40 (38 to be exact) and while I feel that you’re never too young or old to give stuff like this a whirl (I mean what does it hurt since it washes out, y’know?) this gal won’t be trying it out! Ha

I have very dark brown hair, plus a lot of grey these days, & I’ve never really colored my hair. I have used Ardell Light & Brights or Manic Panic, in shades of red or plum to add something to my hair color, but I’ve never bleached it or used any crazy colors. I’m 39 & I’ve decided that I want to do something crazy with my hair before I turn 40. So, this Summer I’m going to try something light & bright with my short & spiky hair, but I don’t know what color yet. I have it narrowed down to a few shades, like the greyish lavender that’s been popular, shades of pink, perhaps the right shade of aqua or sea green. Also, most likely it’ll be a blend of a few shades instead of one solid color.

Love hair chalk! Part of the reason I went blonde was so it would show up better lol. I am also an adult but my current job is cool with color so I’m lucky. Just ordered a 36 color set of cosmetic grade….but what brand is the normal chalk is in the pic?? The colors are amazing 🙂
