Stila Smudge Crayon Waterproof Eye Primer + Shadow + Liner Review & Swatches
I’m loving all these cream eyeshadow color sticks that are releasing lately. They make such a fine multitasking tool for shading, lining, defining, and acting as a base for loose minerals and powder shadows.
Let’s take a look at the Stila Smudge Crayon Waterproof Eye Primer + Shadow + Liner.
These are a swivel up chubby pencil with a gel base that can be act as a primer for loose pigments or eyeshadows as well as an all over eyeshadow stick and a liner. Dontcha just love multitasking goodness?
They come in a plastic tubing with a swivel up design that features a stealthy sharpener hidden in the top of the barrel. It deserves mentioning they swivel up and down flawlessly. I come across so many pencils that swivel up but won’t swivel down and it drives me bonkers. This packaging is well thought out and without flaw in the fact you can swivel it all the way up and all the way down without a hiccup.
Available in eight shades for $22 each these are a form of the long gone MAC Greasepaint Sticks released a bit ago. They are an oz bigger than MAC’s version weighting in at 0.04 per tube. It’s a good deal of product here considering how very pigmented the shades are. They have a rich, deep color pay off with a single swipe.
The formula blends and builds easily with a quite a nice strong, long hold. I have drier lids and they wore, without primer, for an eight hour period without creasing, fading, or migrating around my eye. They have a creamy texture but not an emollient one but still have an easy glide across lids without tugging on the delicate area of the eye lid.
As a liner they’ll create a rather bolder, bigger line since you won’t be working with a precision point but more of a chubby tipped pencil. I used them on my waterline, I’m not sure if that’s safe or not, and experienced no issues. I actually like the bigger size of the point for the waterline since it applies a little easier for me with a better color pay off.

As a cream shadow they pop and sizzle. I’m wearing Umber in my images below and as you can see it’s a really rich, warm shade. If you want you can pile a powder shadow on top or a pigment. Using loose pigments with this as a base will minimize fall out and create a richer more vibrant color pay off. Using shadows produces the same effect. When I used something on top of them I had a nice wear, no fading, no creasing…shadows seem to adhere very well to the surface so in a sense they do act as a primer of sorts.
Overall, I like these a lot. There are a ton of different cream shadow sticks to try out on the market at the moment but very few have such great pigmentation, excellent hold, and ease of use. You can easily create a very elegant eye look in seconds using one of these.
Worth picking up a shade or two.
I’d only change one thing and that would be more variety. Eight shades isn’t enough for color hungry beauty junkies like us.
