Musings of a Muse: Has Your Skincare Regime Changed with Age?

(This photo is over ten years old shhhh don’t tell anyone k?)

I never thought I’d run into the day when I noticed myself obsessing over anti-aging skincare. It’s just not something you think of in your early teen years or early twenties.

I think around mid-twenties you start really concentrating on the issue but sometimes you get lazy, you’re concentrating on your life too much, and you’re just not really paying attention even than.

It really depends what sort of skincare person you are. As I’ve run into many people that are quite young and already putting energy into developing the best regime for their skin even now to prevent aging in the future.

Has your regime changed with age?

Have you taken preventative measures in your youth to prevent aging in your future?

My regime has definitely changed…

I never spent a ton of time on anti-aging creams in my teens or early twenties. It just wasn’t something I felt I needed into my skincare life although I do wish I had started way earlier than my mid-twenties with anti-aging potions and lotions…!

Over the past 3-4 years, I’d say that I under went a massive change with my skincare.

Almost everything I purchase now seems to be some quick fix for some aging issue or another. Thankfully, I don’t have finer lines on my face as of yet but I do suffer from puffy eyes in the AM, finer lines under my eyes, and dryness under my eyes.

All this has influenced my skincare purchases…!

Lord, I don’t every remember having issues with dry under eyes in my teens or twenties. What happened?

How about you?

What issues do you currently face and how have you changed your skincare to “fix” those issues?

Do share!

What a lovely woman you are! Gorgeous hair!

My skincare has always been pretty basic, but I’m using a Clarisonic these days to get my moisturizer to really sink in better. I’ve always avoided the sun (and took much teasing for this, still do) but I can honestly say my skin does not look its almost 43 years. The biggest complaint I have about aging is the crepey eyelids. It is such a pain!! Eyeliner never used to be a problem, but I’m finding that gels are much easier to apply and go on better.

I bought so many really expensive products that ended up not working that I just stick to regular old Olay and some Boots No. 7 products that I really l like.

    • the Muse

      you’re too kind missy! <3!

same here, def use clarisonic daily although I've been a little crap using it the past month or so...! I typically take it in the shower in the AM with me but been having lazy mornings, not good, because it really does do wonderful things for my skin! no issues with that yet but puff is a major prob...! 🙁 sigh. I can't seem to rid myself of it. I stopped blaming aging and started blaming staring at a computer monitor for too many hours a day!

I feel your pain! noticing changes in my skin of the way it was and the way it is just sucks sometimes..! particularly when I want to wear aqua eyeshadow and realize it just doesn't work for me anymore :-/

      • Missy

UGH I hear ya! Soo many of my favorite shades I can’t wear anymore 🙁 I started going away from shimmers to just strictly matte, but then realized a little shimmer is a good thing 😉 I love a really dark smokey eye but don’t want to look like a crazy lady. I’ve been trying to tone it down, but it’s so hard!! Ah well LOL

Does your Clarisonic irritate your skin at all? I can only use mine once a day, usually at night because it makes my skin sore, esp around the cheek area. And I’ve got the sensitive skin thingy.

        • the Muse

oh gosh I think it’ll break my heart when I finally can’t use sparkle/shimmer. I agree a little is ok ;-D Same here, I used to love black on my lids with a little gray or silver highlight for a smoked look but can’t do it anymore, it ages me and makes my dark circles worst 🙁

no…at first it made me oily which is odd, I’m very dry…but after several weeks of use things calmed down. I hear there is an adjustment period…are you new to it? I’m not sensitive but maybe change your brush head?

          • MandyB

Hi Missy and Muse! I used the sensitive brush head on mine for almost a year, then it just started irritating my cheeks. I switched it up to the deep pore brush and it feels much better. I’ve been using the deep pore one for almost two months now with no issues. It feels a bit softer to me, even though it’s not specifically aimed for sensitive skin.

  • Michelle

First of all, love love love the pic! I remember somewhere on the blog your sharing that you were Portuguese (I am too) and I can totally see it! 🙂

Well, at 43 (this July) it is time for me to stop being lazy. I had a bad period of acne in my teens and 20’s, then relatively calm skin in my 30’s, now I’m finally beginning to see fine lines and other signs of aging that I just can’t ignore anymore. The most annoying one of all is that all of my lipsticks/glosses are beginning to bleed from fine lip lines and I have to use ELF’s Lip Lock pencil to stop that from happening.

I still suffer from hyper pigmentation and clogged pores though, so right now I’m using a 2% BHA lotion to keep my skin clear and then a serum over top of that to address the anti aging issues. I’m trying to keep things as simple as I can for the time being. Hope my face can hold out for a while longer!

    • the Muse

ah cheers michelle I didn’t know you were Portuguese! full? or half? Your name didn’t give it away…! I don’t know a lot of portuguese michelle’s ;D I’m half. My mum’s Italian ;-D awww no! 🙁 I noticed when my lips are dry this happens to me! hyper pigmentation here too! Just recently maybe…three years? four? right on my jaw line, very weird. My main issue is dry dry dry dry dry…it ages my skin terribly if I am not RIGHT on top of it. I keep it as moist as possible otherwise it flakes all crazy 🙁

Same here! same here…! I’m curious how it’ll react in my 40’s!

      • Michelle

I’m half Portuguese and half Italian also! 🙂 I see that you’re not far from Newark NJ which is where my family is originally from, there is a great Portuguese neighborhood there called The Ironbound that has a ton of cool markets and restaurants. It is def. worth a trip if you’re ever in the area. No makeup stores at all, however! 🙂

        • the Muse

omg! ha so much in common! ;-D where are you located now? I’ve been to “little Portugal” 😀 elizabeth nj has quite a few Portuguese supermarkets, rest., etc…do you read Carla? Product Girl? She’s Portuguese too! ;D Haha I can do without the makeup so long as they have good food hehehe! It’s hard to find good Portuguese food!

          • Tiffany C.

pbi, i’m portuguese too!!!! i’m only half though. My father was born in the azores on the isle of san miguel.

          • the Muse

ahhhhh! awesome tiffany! my dad was born in Arcos de Valdez, I’ve never been to sao miguel island but have had it on my bucket list for ages. Have you gone?

  • Sarah

The main thing I try to focus on is not being in the sun too much and wearing sunscreen. But sometimes it gets sunny and I’m caught bare skinned. I get sunburned really easily or I get freckles easily. I’ve been thinking about keeping a sunblock lotion in the car on those days when the sun starts creeping up on me.

    • the Muse

I make sure I slather it on heavily ;-D I hear ya…! sometimes I am on holiday and jeepers how do you keep out of the sun if you’re on an island somewhere? but damn straight I find a way lol!!!!!!!!

  • Cj

Yeah I’m too young to take part in this post, but I just had to say…

    Ooh la la <3 😛

    • the Muse

LOL is that you JC? ;-D hahaha! <3! you're never too young for anti-aging ;-D listen up young blood, you'll learn a thing or two hehehehe!

  • sataa

You are looking absolutely gorgeous in this pic .i have turned 24 this year my skin regime has changed a little bit I have started using an anti aging night cream because I believe prevention is better then cure I have recently started using hydrating skin masksd too and I use sunscreen in both winter and summer

    • the Muse

aw thanks sataa, I look like a dork hehe ;-D but thanks! GOOD for you! SPF is so important ;-D and great on the anti-aging moisturizer, it really is never too early to start!

  • Sarah S.

You could’ve told me this picture is new! Muse, you have such pretty hair 🙂

    • the Muse

ha I wish! thanks sarah, it’s MUCH longer now EEP! :-/

  • diane

Such a beautiful picture! How long is your hair now? I want to see!

I can relate to this post so much. I feel like once I turned 25 (26 now) my face started to bug out. I still break out like a teen but now it’s like wrinkles, uneven texture- who the eff invited you to my face party???

I always had good skincare routine- using eye creme since I was 14 (thanks mom!) and never ever sleeping in makeup…always washed my face and used some kind of creme as far back as i remember..

but throughout my teens and earlier 20s I was a tanning junkie. Loved the beds, loved the sun- so I know deep down in my skin is past evil waiting to come out (sigh). I am so obsessed with anti aging now to erase as much of that as I can and prevent any more from happening!!

    • the Muse

hey d, straight down the back, a little past my butt ;-D a little too long……..! ;-D I feel like cutting it all off, but I always say that, never do. lol! I hear ya…mine started when I hit 29, just seemed like my skin was completely different, it was like I had to relearn my own face…! puffy eyes, fine lines under them, WTF?! where did you come from? ;-D

my sister is a sun goddess…tanning beds, direct sun in the Summer, really low SPF, she doesn’t take care of her skin at all in this aspect…! but funny, she looks amazing for a woman of her age…!

      • diane

wow lucky sister! i think you guys have genetics on your side =)

wow down to your butt?? oh i’m so envious. i’m trying to grow mine to my waist!

do you have any good growing hair and keeping it healthy and long tips or product recs??

thanks my friend..and i’m still waiting for our hang out! lol

        • the Muse

I WISH! I feel like I’m falling apart sometimes lol! it’s the end of the world, my eyes are puffy AHHHHHHHHHHHH! yup! I just had a trim too! I was thinking I’d go to my shoulders again soon but it grows like a weed!

Mmm…not really any good growing ones but I tend to keep away from silicone when possible! that seems to keep my hair from getting weighted down! Oh gosh yes, I’m so so sorry I’ve been a little nutty ;-D when is good for you next month? I was just talkin’ to another reader about you as she lives in NY too so I said we could all meet up together ;D!

          • diane

i wish my hair grew like a weed! i was using wen almost a year but lately my scalp has been very itchy and i think i’m shedding more so i switched to ojon. i have to quit silicones, all i hear is bad things about them.

june i’m pretty open- a weds or thurs works best i’m still only working part time right now so those are my off days =( ..oh a muse meet up would be fun!!!

  • Tina

I don’t think I’ve ever seen your hair in your blog Muse. It’s always pulled back with the headband. Me likes!

    • the Muse

yeah I typically do my face in the AM when I’m getting ready for work so I don’t leave it down in my fotd photos…you might run into one or two really old blog posts where it is down ;-D

  • jenna

yay we hardly ever get to see your gorgeous hair! and you haven’t aged a bit i’m hesitant to even believe that photo is ten years old!
i’m in my early twenties right now and i don’t purchase anti aging products for my face yet although i’ve grown to become diligent with my clarisonic. i do however use anti aging eye cream and undereye concealer as i suspect that will be the first place wrinkles will appear!

    • the Muse

older than ten Jenna hehe…! and thanks! I dunno if a lot has changed but my eyes def have, I feel like they aren’t as great as they were :-/ eye cream def important! you have time to worry about the rest.

  • vj

u look stunningly pretty. I m jus 19 bt d use of retinoids has dried up my skin n flaked it. I hav fine lines Around eyes and dark circles as heredity. my super oily skin seems like it has turned kinda combo. V cnfusd abt wat my skincare regime should b.

    • the Muse

aw thanks vj! sorry to hear about your flaky skin issues le sigh 🙁 I hope you find something that works for you hun 🙁

  • JoElla

I just had a birthday, and it is really nice to see a bunch of 40 somethings posting here <3

My skincare has really changed. I used to buy those jumbo kits from HSN (serious skin care) I liked the products, but started to swim in them.. I changed to Olay, and liked a few, but not loved them.. tried a few lumene, but after my 3rd bottle of serum my skin got wonky..

I have decided to step back and just do easy stuff. Currently I am using a sample of argan oil for under my eyes and I bought a little bottle of Seabuckhorn oil. I do throw an origins spf cream for the day, that is it. I have done this for about a week and my skin is loving this combo!

No more dry skin, it looks brighter and now if I could just find somthing for my jowels area.

I also switched cleansers, I am loving the Biore one for combo skin. It doesn't strip it and I don't feel tight or have a 'film' after using it.

Like I said, this is working for me now.. who knows what will happen next week

  • Ruth

heh, i used to use soap and water, that’s all. Now there’s lush’s angel’s on bare skin, dark angels, coal soap, tea tree water and all sorts of different moisturizesr dependant upon the season.don’t forget sun screen. I still have an oily t-zone and get a crap-ton of pimples on my chin. what’s really squicked me out that i’m getting older are these black hairs that keep popping out on my chin. the hell?? who on god’s green earth said that was ok by me?? i def didn’t authorize those little buggers entrance upon my face.

  • Suzanne

    Your hair is so pretty!

My regime has changed. My moistureizer with spf has always stayed the same over the years, but Im reaching for more under eye help, moisture and treatments. I think as we age our skin gets more needy than in our younger days. I just turned 40, and lot of ppl said I dont look it (yay for sunscreen) but Im always on the hunt for the best eye cream possible.

    • the Muse

aw thanks suzanne but not one of my better features, it’s a PITA! me too! I’m ALWAYS seeking the best eye cream…!

  • Icequeen81

Nice Pic, love the curls I have also curly hair as you, Is not long anymore I did cut my hair 2 months ago cause it was falling very much.
My routine hasn’t changed very much but Im thinking to get anti wrinkle cream.
my make up has also changed a lil bit nothing with glittery shadows etc

    • the Muse

ugh wish I could cut them all off icequeen! I hate them 🙁 I TRY and FAIL to avoid glitter ;-D

      • Icequeen81

my curls are soft are kind of wavy , but short is not the best option. cant find a nice product to make them shiny. he he I avoid glitter itsy bitsy but have a fine eyeliner pencil that one is allowed hehe. Have also the NXW pallets the bronze one that one is subtle.
any suggestion for wavy/curly ? I saw u use the Got to be but they don’t have it here 🙁

  • Amanda

Well, I just turned 27 last week and I’ve been using Retina Micro for a few years now. I get it from my dermatologist for “acne issues” but really use to it help prevent wrinkles! It isn’t a miracle though- I still have wrinkles developing around my eyes and on my forehead. They aren’t deep-set or anything, but noticeable enough to me if I examine my skin.

I always wear sunscreen of course. Gotta do it while you use RAM!

  • Winni

OMG you’re so pretty! Gorgeous hair! You look like the Mona Lisa in a good way 🙂

  • Winni

Oh yeah, about the skincare. Yes mine has changed a bit. I currently am using Paula’s Choice products and my adult acne has gone bye bye. My skin has never looked better! I just bought a clarisonic to help me exfoliate away my hyperpigmentation from pregnancy.

    • the Muse

I’ve been wanting to try her stuff! I hear so many raves about it. jeepers so it’s true hyper pigmentation does come along with pregnancy? :-/

      • Tammie

Oh yes Muse, my son is 3 and I am struggling with it still..my skin is forever changed I think! Now every little blemish gets a dark mark afterwards :(.

Pregnancy really messes with your body chemistry, that’s not the only thing.

      • Winni

Yeah, some of us get hyper pigmentation. And the baby is awesome! I need to update my photo, she is growing so fast! I finally just started doing my makeup again. 🙂

  • batul fazal

Muse You look lovely <3 I am 20 years old and finally have started in buying good skincare products.
    xx

    • the Muse

aw thanks batul you’re very kind…! good for you! you’re never too young to start!

  • sylvia

I’m 28 and I’ve started using the Clarisonic and Retin-A —it’s working quite well
I also do the occasional lactic acid peel too

  • Tigress

It actually hasn’t changed that much, as I still use acne related products. I’m very fair with oily skin and can be prone to breakouts, which sucks, especially since I’m left with post acne marks. I’ve been using the Alba Botanica acne line for a few days and I like it so far. Fingers crossed!

  • Lululbelle

Um, I’m 48 and still dealing with oily skin and blemishes. Add the hyperpigmentation that comes with age and massive sun exposure over the years and I’m surprised I don’t look like the crypt keeper. Fortunately, genetics are on my side, as my mom is 69 and still has minimal wrinkles.

However, I’ve heard that you are either a wrinkler or a sagger, and I’m noticing some sagging around my jowls. I’m more aware of how my neck and chest look, and those areas were sadly neglected. I’ve been using a peptide lotion from DHC for my neck and making sure to spread whatever I use on my face on my neck.

I wish I had paid more attention to my neck, chest, and hands, cause that’s where the age issues are more apparent.

    • the Muse

gosh maybe that’ll be me lulu! I noticed a little bit of sagging and smile lines around the sides of my nose/cheek area. I thought I was imaging it but it’s def there…! I smile, laugh, etc..a lot so I imagine that doesn’t help the issue LOL but how can you go through life without smiling big ;-D I don’t have fine lines so maybe I’ll be a sagger too….jeez I dunno which is worst though…sagging or wrinkles!

  • Sondra

Well as I mentioned earlier on FB. I’m almost 40 (NOV) have had very oily skin my whole life no pimples ever (knock on wood) only a few whiteheads and blackheads. Nothing I can’t handle. The only concern is the tiny forehead lines creeping in. I still have hyperpigmentation on my chin which only started a year ago. I can’t shake it. I have freckles which I love and never cover. I’m also starting to get the undereye wrinkles(yuck) but, no crows feet. (yay) No smile lines yet another yay. I have always had dark circles so oh well. But, with the mega-oily skin I still look like i’m in my 20’s. My mom is 73 and she looks 50. We’re of Spanish (Spain) decent. So good genes are helpful. Well as for products they were clinique (20’s) Philosophy (30’s) and now Clarins. It has been hard to find a good combo as of late for my skin. But, the Clarins seems to be working out great. Well sorry for rambling on. Your picture looks super fine.

  • Littlecreek

I’m taking an “aging by the decades” approach. In my twenties I stuck to a good moisturizer and sunscreen. The day I hit 30 (last summer) I strted looking at anti aging products as I was getting some fine lines. Murad’s Anti Acne Anti Wrinkle stuff erased them within a week. It’s my only HG skincare product. I’m still on the search for something that will keep me from breaking out (hormones are evil). I figure once I’m closer to 40 I’ll start looking into Retinol products to crank it up a notch.

  • Jayme

I think the biggest change, was for me realizing that acne cleansers were to harsh for my skin (and actually causing more harm than good).

So for the most part I have switched over to sensative skin stuff… I also have gotten better at following a routine on a regular basis.

  • dina

ahhhhh Muse in her youth!!!!! lady you look like that could’ve been last year, seriously!
so i just turned 33 a few weeks ago and truth be told my skincare routine is a little half as*. and only since maybe this past dec. have i started using a moisturizer with spf [mostly] daily after you gave me a wt…talking to in another skincare post! and my kinda sensitive skin has gotten drier with age and post pregnancy. other than that i do cleanse my face but then again sometimes i just splash with water. and exfoliation and treatments are on the here and there side despite my stockpile. i suppose the fact that i don’t wear make up regularly [GASP, am i in the right place??] makes it less of an issue in my mind? i still want to wear the brighter eye shadows when i do wear it but i do think twice sometimes, same with brighter lip. oh well 🙁
you may have singehandedly saved my skin from premature aging my friend 🙂 you and the way likeable texture of origins a perfect world spf 25

and yes that is me in the car next to you plucking my grays with a little miss sunshine shirt on and my offspring in the back seat listening to 90s on 9 😛 denial much?!

  • Therese

Your hair is so lovley down, you should do it more often = )

    • the Muse

aw thanks very much therese…typically wear it down in the PM but not the AM, need it out of my face when I’m working otherwise it drives me nuts!

  • Quinctia

I…use moisturizer now? My skin’s actually what I would call “normal,” and I hadn’t realized that I wasn’t overproducing oil anymore. I had a couple places on my face that were just a wee dry, probably just from the routine of putting on product and scrubbing it off daily. So I moisturize in the evening now.

I rarely need lotion for the rest of my skin, either, so I’m a moisturize once a day person now.

I’m just shy of thirty and I don’t feel that my face has really shown any aging…fortunate genetics. I’m skeptical of most anti-aging products’ claims, to be honest…

  • christine

I remember sending you a letter via musings of a muse. I believe i said something about seeing your beautiful face, and perhaps your hair! OH MY you’re BEAUTIFUL! <3

    • the Muse

oh gosh christine sorry, did I get back to you? I get millions of emails daily so sometimes they get misplaced ;-D and un-replied too, thank you for the e-mail! I do appreciate it! apologies if I failed to reply! awwwwwwwwww wow lol you’re WAY too kind ;-D thank you hun made my day!

  • Becca @ The Beauty Sample

Goodness, girl! Still gorgeous as ever!! I feel ya on the dry undereyes thing. I have oily skin so having an area on my face that is dry is very unnerving, to say the least. I am also starting to notice the beginnings of some fine lines under my eyes, as well. I’ve been using retinols and serums since I was about 23–so it’s not too bad, but I definitely wish I had started at 21 or 22 now! (but we always think it could have been earlier, I guess). My biggest change has been incorporating sun screen EVERYDAY and using a heavier eye cream

  • susan

Oh dear, I’m the oldest! Turned 50 last month and definitely getting the sagging and age spots. On the bright side, most people say I look a lot younger and so years of spending a lot of time and money on my skin (particularly high SPF’s from teens) have paid off. Despite all the hype (and I enjoy using lots of different skin care regimes), experience and observation tells me that a) smoking and sun do the worst damage to the skin – I have never smoked and without exception all my friends who do, have significantly worse looking skin. From the mid to late 30’s you can really tell the difference. Ditto for sun worshippers. b) the next best beautifier is sleep. Period. Rub in all the nice creams you like before you go to bed but the quality of sleep you have will make the most difference to skin appearance and c) sorry to say, but the treatments you get from a well qualified Dr do a lot more than any over the counter cream. Botox (properly used), fillers and IPL can significantly alleviate signs of skin ageing.

  • Tiffany C.

sadly i have not gone. my dad’s sister goes all the time though and i think she’s the only one that goes to visit. my grandmother is up there in age and can’t travel and my uncle is a police officer and is working all the time. they live in massachusetts and we live in texas.

    • the Muse

I haven’t been in a while tiffany..have you ever gone? I use to go entire summer’s in my teens and twenties but it’s been a while since I actually went. My family used to have a beach house in Viana do Castelo and we’d go from June to first week of Sept. was lovely ;D

  • Laura

    Has it changed??? OH YEAH!
I NEVER used lotions at all or moisturizers until I hit about age 32 – my whole teens and 20s never saw ANY of it!

And the hardest thing right now – is that I’ve been following you for years and years, and Makeupby Tiffany D and Beauty Broadcast, and although I’m 39 now, none of you guys have had the “change” in your skin yet.

Something happens around age 37 I’d say – and the wrinkles are everywhere. I need a Beauty Broadcast-er that is 40 so they understand my skin issues.

So many concealors that work great on anyone under 33, look hideous on a 39 year old.

    • the Muse

aw laura I hear ya I hear ya! I’m waiting…;-D other than the under eye issues I really haven’t seen a TON of change on my face…but I imagine at some point it’ll go :-/ I do not relish the day!

  • Stephanie

You look AMAZING with your hair down like that! You should do that more often on your blog!!!!! I LOVE your picture!!!!

  • Wendy A.

It’s not as harsh as it used to be I don’t scrub my face till it feels tight anymore and I use gentler products.
The other thing is I tend to stick to products that I have tried and know work I’m not that keen on switching to new products every time I finish them.
I still however use acne free every summer and only because I have to because it’s super hot in mexico in the summer it’s 72 degrees today for crying out loud.
    Hugs-Wendy.

  • Larie

Gorgeous, doll! So gorgeous! We should see your hair more often!

  • Lydia

I’m so bad at skin habits. Through my teen years I’ve bought and wasted so many cleansers, toners, moisturizers, etc.

I’m 23 now and starting to really look at the redness my high school acne caused and the fine lines under my eyes. I use a facial scrub in the shower and in the morning I use a moisturizer with both retinol and sunscreen. My strategy was to cut down all the skincare steps that made me quit so many times before. Using my scrub in the shower instead of at the sink is less of a chore, and combining my moisturizer, anti-age treatment and sunscreen saves a lot of time. Plus, I use my moisturizer to lubricate any leftover, smudged eye makeup that I missed in the shower so I can wipe it off easily and skip the eye makeup remover (shhh, don’t tell).
