Neutrogena Shine Control Makeup Collection

Funny story…I went to the Chanel counter recently and my regular MA was sadly not there so I struck up a conversation with the manager at the counter and she tried to sell me some snow in Summer. Kiddin’. She tried to convince me to try some skincare and proceeded to tell me my skin was a combination. Eh? News to me! I thought I was terribly dehydrated. Was she trying to sell me something or am I really a combination skin type? What? Have I gone through life thinking I’m dry and all this time I’m a combo?

You’re definitely very right Shelly! However, that style of container is used by a lot of brands (Revlon, Givenchy, Neutrogena, Smashbox, etc) so the packaging is probably made in the same place!

  • K.B.

I will definitely check out this line to see if there are any drugstore dupes for my current department store shine control primer, foundation, & setting powder.

Oh, and obviously I’m oily. I use a mattifying moisturizer in the a.m., follow it up with a matte primer, set my (non-mattifying but lighter for the summer) foundation with a mattifying powder, and set my makeup with a shine control makeup spray, and I start getting noticeably oily 3ish hours after my makeup sets. So either mattifying products are full of lies, and/or I’m an oil slick. I keep trying mattifying products, though.

(This post was brought to you by the word “mattifying” lol)

    • the Muse

lol kb! LAUGHED so hard…at “this post was brought to your by the word “mattifying” can you tell me how to get how to get to makeup street!

    • amber

I totally relate to K.B.’s search for the mattifying holy grail. I have tried a ton of stuff too. Bare Minerals worked ok for awhile but I get shiny about 2-3 hours in. A few others that seemed to work for a few days then failed me-hourglass mineral veil primer and lola’s anti shine gel. The x out anti shine stuff from the myglam sample worked pretty well too. I carry blot paper with me but am starting to feel like no matter what I do I will always be shiny. At least I look young from all the oil and lack of wrinkles. I will try these out just in case though.

      • Kaitlin

I’m the same way. My face is an oil slick and I hate it. I wish I could bottle all that oil and somehow hygienically save it for 20 years from now when I might could use some of it!

I think us oily ladies could make millions selling it. 😛

      • Alanna

I’m not generally a huge fan of skin food’s peach sake line, but I got some samples of the pore serum with my last ebay order and I’m really really liking it as a primer! I usually get about 2 hours without shine with my normal primer, and this stuff is stretching me to 3 or 4. After that I’m pretty much an oil slick environmental hazard, though. 🙁

  • Cj

The healthy skin primer might be something to look into, their healthy skin range is supposedly pretty good. I hate when SA’s try to sell you stuff you don’t need or want, when they try to do that with me I tell them flat out no lol. I have slightly dry skin but not dry enough that I need heavier moisturizers.

  • Hoang

I wasn’t even aware of these products! Thank you for blogging about them. I want to try the Healthy Skin Primer. 🙂

  • Tammie

Very interested in the powder, but I am scared to use it since some Neutrogena stuff broke me out before…but that was a lotion, so maybe the powder would be alright?

    • Avalith

I tried their powder before, and it is amazing. I just didn’t like the packaging because the metal hinge part that held the makeup lid broke off and the entire thing fell apart… lol.. it was the gray one, I forgot what it was called.

  • Cindy

Just a few days ago I popped into my local CVS and they had a display with the foundations set up with samples of 3 Different shades of the foundation (On a card). I tried it out, but the darkest shade was just a few shades to0 light for my skin tone.

    • the Muse

cindy I NEVER find the right shade at the drugstore le sigh!

  • kimkats

Hmmm…. I’m dry skinned *just like you* Muse, and I”m interested in the Healthy Skin primer…. Gotta find out what the broad spectrum spf is tho… My skin hates avobenzene…

Hon, you live with your skin – if it responds well to you treating it like its dry, then by cracky, it’s DRY. I hate how these SAs take one look at you and think they’ve got your skin pegged. I know my skin- I’ve lived with it for a looooong time(and fought with it for most of that time…) and I know what it likes and what it doesn’t like.

You know your skin, so keep treating it the way it likes!

    • the Muse

aw cheers kim words of wisdom if ever I did hear ’em girl!

  • Becca @ The Beauty Sample

ooh yes! Definitely trying the primer and maybe the mattifying powder too. Fingers crossed this will be it!

  • Hillarie

The whole line is calling for me! I have normal to oily skin most of the year, and then it gets slightly dry in the winter

  • Charlotte

I’ve read several reviews by confirmed “oily girls” and the general consensus is these are terrible. LOL, sorry. The primer does very little to control oil, and the foundation is gritty, very poor coverage, and wears off in a few hours.

Black Radiance complexion perfection primer(sold at Walmart, and various drugstores for about $6) is my HG, give it a try. It is a brand aimed at darker skin tones, but the product is clear and can be used even if you are fair (like me).

Milk of Magnesia is amazing stuff. I find it actually improves my oil production over time, not just a quick fix for the day. I’ve gotten to the point now where I can use it a few times a week instead of everyday. I cannot begin to tell you how much of a miracle that is for my insanely oily skin.

I also found that a lot of super oily/blackhead and acne prone skin is actually dehydrated/irritated and producing even more oil to compensate. Stop stripping it with harsh cleansers and toners, burning it with acids, and give it some good oil (extra virgin olive oil is cheap, and fantastic for your skin), and you may be surprised at the results- and no, putting evoo on your skin will not make you more oily or break you out. My routine is EVOO every night to hydrate/remove makeup, removed with a baby wipe (I use Huggies naturals, beat any cosmetic wipe I have ever tried), followed with Garnier Moisture rescue gel. For several months I used EVOO alone, as my only moisturizer, until my skin balanced, now I can use the lighter moisturizer. I use a mild cleanser and exfoliate about 3x a week. My skin has improved so much it’s like it belongs to someone else, I only wish I had figured all this out years ago.

    • Cas

That is serious good advice for oily skin (like me) I used to try and fight the oil and strip my skin with harsh products, and I would get even more oil in a couple hours. Now I use just a gentle wash once a day and a light moisturizer that doesn’t leave me greasy and my oil production has toned down so much! Even in the summer. I also use baby wipes, but I use the costco ones cause that’s what my toddlers get :). I wish I would have known that during my teenage years! Hahah

    • TwirlyGirly

Ditto on the Huggies Naturals baby wipes as makeup remover! LOVE ’em and a LOT cheaper than the wipes sold as makeup remover towelettes. (PS – I carry them in my purse because they’re also good to remove stains on clothing, believe it or not!)

    • Angel

Totally agree on what you said about oily/acneic skinned girls over stripping our skin. I’ve had oily skin forever, and had bad acne as well. A year ago I started using JM oil cleanser, plus argan or Maracuja oil at night. My skin has never looked better. I’m convinced my skin was a dehydrated mess due to the salicylic cleanser, glycolic treatments, acne products. It was too much! Now I only use JM cleanser, La Roche Posay Effaclar duo and an oil patted on top. That’s it! Totally simplified my routine. I have WAY less acne, at least an 80% improvement. Plus, my skin doesn’t get as oily during the day under my makeup. I think the oils are really doing the trick to balance my skin. I highly recommend oily girls giving oil a chance. Try it for a couple of weeks. I was scared to death trying it for the first time, but it has really helped my skin.

  • Michelle D

I have oily skin and I tried the Shine Control Primer and I was not impressed. I didn’t find that it mattified very well, and I was quite shiny a couple of hours after applying. I much prefer Smashbox Anti-Shine, or Milk of Magnesia.

  • Avalith

I tried some of the foundation at Target today, but I can’t say that I like the way it smells and the way it feels when I applied it to the back of my hand… the smell alone would keep me away from wearing it! I’d like to see more reviews on the primer and powder though! 🙂

  • Jayme

I am normal skin, but i treat it as sensitive. I really want the healthy skin primer. I use the healthy skin foundation (it is actually my holy grail), it will definately be the next primer I purchase

  • TwirlyGirly

Does it HAVE to be EVOO, or will just plain olive oil do as a moisturizer? If not, what is different about Extra-Virgin that makes it a better moisturizer? BTW, olive oil is the BEST cleanser for removing foundation from sponges and brushes. It breaks it down immediately and removes it completely. Then wash brush/sponge thoroughly with baby shampoo to remove the olive oil. Cheaper and works much better than brush cleaners!

  • Regeena Lane

I have had oily skin all my life, prone to break outs and black heads, acne scarring…you name it. I’ve tried SO many different primers to keep me from going oily and honestly, every single one I’ve tried (DS and HE) have made oil worse. So, I stopped using them. The one thing that I have found that has REALLY helped control my oil is Coal Face from Lush. I’m sure it won’t work for everyone but it worked for me. NOW, my skin is sorta combo instead of very oily. I also agree with the Milk of Magnesia, it works wonders on skin. I’ve learned that the less I add to my face, the better my makeup stays on. A light moisturizer, foundation, powder and that’s it. I’ve tried Model in a Bottle to help keep my makeup from breaking down and it just made me oily. I would definitely try changing your skin care routine before spending more money on mattifying products. The more oil you strip from your face, the more oil your body will produce to keep it hydrated. EVOO and solid coconut oil are great moisturizers.

I was kinda psyched to try the oily skin primer, but after what others have said, I think I’ll skip.

You guys give such good advice for things to try out!
