Charlotte Ronson Starry Eyes Liquid Eyeshadow Review & Swatches

This was provided to me by a brand for review but all opinions expressed are my own

Being the big cream shadow h0r that I am I was quite tempted to try Charlotte Ronson Starry Eyes Liquid Eyeshadow ($18). Available in four shades these recently launched liquid eyeshadows offer a shimmering wash of color to eyes.

They might just remind you of Chanel’s Ombre D’Eau Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow, I know that’s why I was keen on giving them a try as I love the Chanel version.

Take a look!

Mmm well, the formula doesn’t quite translate as nicely as Ombre D’Eau Fluid Iridescent Eyeshadow. I’d call it more of an eye gloss than an eye wash since the formula is terribly sheer.

My review is based on a single shade, Sky, which is one of the lighter shades offered. I didn’t like it but I am keen to try more shades to see if they perform better. The sheer pink just didn’t work out so well and I suspect all the shades will have the same performance issues but I still want to try a darker shade just to prove that fact.

These come housed in a very elegant glass tube just like Chanel’s version. Visually they are a very luxe looking product with a decent price tag at under $20 dollars. The formula is a bi-phase one of sorts which features a pigment suspended in an oily watery base. You’ll have to shake it up very well prior to application to combine the base and color. A sponge applicator is provided for application.

Although they swatch nice enough with a metallic-like finish they don’t apply quite as nicely. At first application you’ll find they yield ok color but as you blend the color will disappear. You can try building the color up but still blending out results in the same issue where color just disappears completely. I’m unsure how many people would be quite happy with a sheer wash of color that they can’t properly blend out. You could try to rely on the sponge to blend properly and get the best color build up but I find this creates a bit of a mess particularly because the product takes a hot minute to set.

Overall, these are quite nice to look at, fun to play with and swatch, but the application is a real issue. They just don’t want to stick around on my lid if I try to blend them out. Mmmm unfortunately, I didn’t like them. Nice idea, decent price, but the formula needs a lot of work!

Tried ’em?

I bought this shadow in “Alison,” and I too was disappointed with the application and staying power. I’m also a huge fan of liquid and cream shadows (why won’t Urban Decay bring back their Cream Shadows?!?) and have tried just about all of them. I was intrigued that this looked lighter and more sheer and glossy than other liquids, a combination that’s hard to find in a single product. But the problems are too big, so I will be returning it. First of all, it takes too long to dry, making an even application nearly impossible. Second, even if you’re patient and steady-handed enough to accomplish a nice, even look, it fades and creases within hours.

jen ’bout the same problems here with it le sigh! not a great product at all! If you liked UD’s cream shadows you should try the NYX version!

I tried Shiri (I think — the greenish gold one) and it went back to Sephora the next day. The color was super gorgeous — it just creased like mad on me, even over primer.

that leaves that out laci as I was going to try the green next! I suspected they would all perform the same but was holding hope out!

That’s so pretty. I’m on a nude eye kick, though, so that is really speaking to me. Nice!

Haven’t tried them, and after reading this review, I won’t. But I do like the color. Nice and shimmery.

I agree! I bought the shade Alison too and loved it on the back of my hand. It took way too long to dry and creased right away. It went back!

jess yeah, the dry down is awesome and you can’t get the color consistency on lids that you do on swatch! how sad!

I got the green shade and am very happy with it! It creased a little bit but held up pretty well on sweltering hot 4th of July! I was also happy with the color/pigment. It was enough for me.

I have Shiri and ADORE it! I’m sad these didn’t work for you because I’m actually tempted to go back and buy the three other colors! I think you have to let them set for a looooong time. I just put it on and then get up and brush my teeth (2 minutes!) or put on my clothes or whatever. Then they’re good to go! I like to pat a little UD Mildew around the edges, too.

I wish I could say the same 🙁 it just came across too sheer as I blended le sigh! I’ll try again ;D!

Maybe I’m heavy handed with mine! Lol. Also, maybe it’s because you have one of the lighter shades… Anyway, glad to see you review these!

I have three of the four colors. I passed on the green one. I love Kelly. It’s really pretty and was easy to work with. I tried another (not sure of the name but it was sort of purple/burg) and it did not play nicely and also it (for me) would be better in the crease. I have yet to try the one reviewed here. I like them.
